Smash & Zagreb Job - Player Ratings & HIGHLIGHTS

Friday, 07 November 08, 04:13 AM · Comments (115)

Please don't get me wrong, four - nil against anybody is a good thing. And here's the 'but'. But be under no illusions this game needs to be filed along with the pre season friendlies in terms of form value.

Zagreb didn't really show up. Dinamo's fans turned up alright. They were the bare chested mentalists letting off flares and singing Wagnerian choral verses to the tune of Yellow Submarine.

And a small group of Spurs fans will meet with the North London Sanity Commission today to explain why they felt the need to sing about Jermain Defoe when ...they had Darren Bent in front of them scoring repeatedly.

Oh how we chuckled when the issue of player confidence was raised...

Morale wise this game won on two fronts. 'Arry showed he could box clever and find the balance between Europe and the Premiership commitments. And for the squad, another cohesive performance and another game moving on from the Ramos quagmire.

And here's a torrent for the whole game CLICKY

Gomes 6  Untroubled for once - so no 'Clinger Drops Clanger' headlines this morning.
Woodgate 6  Swept as he cleaned, it was a  very calm shift but he was every bit a Captain.
Hutton 5.5  Is he fit? Alan are you fully fit? Alan? Alan, you alright, dear? Can he hear me?
Dawson 6  Anonymous but in a good way. That doesn't scan well but he just did his job without any fuss. Which was welcome.
Bale 6  Much came from him. Far more suited going forward. Final ball was a bit 'thingy' though. I would never doubt his enthusiasim, so I have to ask about his fitness.
Gunter 6  Poor old Chris. Not on for long. Didn't see much enemy fire. Nor did we.
Zokora 5  With more space than Space 1999 this was a game he could have expolited. He didn't. He's a likable character but as a player eminently replaceable.
Huddlestone 8  Man of Match. Ball winning, assist giving, play making, goal scorer. A joy.
Bentley 6.5  Sleepy first half but some useful balls in. Coming on nicely.
Lennon 7  Footwork so fancy Michael Flatley is rumoured to be in for him come January.
Modric  7.5  Showed pace, determination and flair. Blessed are the trouble makers.
Bent 8.5  Hatrick. Carbon copies of the pre season. Not knocking, just saying. So you know.
Campbell 6.5  Came on and caused them grief immeadiately. What are we feedng him on?
The Boss 6.5  In the immortal words of Bruce Castle, 'Bring Out The Bostock!' He looks terrific.

You non-believers: Laugh all you want, but last night Hudd reminded med of a certain Steven Gerrard. If he only could reproduce that form in the league. If he only...There is always so many "if he only..." regarding Tom.

Just have one small comment.
If you feel Bent deserved a 8.5, and Huddlestone only a 8, how come Bent is not MoM?...

Besides that, I agree on most of this :)

That's well summed up, Harry. Zagreb were as soft as a grape. Unless they were coming in late on tackles. Then you discovered the prickles.

Can't take anything away from Huddlestone's daisy cutter to the bottom corner. I'd like to think goals like this and Bentley's Beauty as well as Modric starting to strafe at will is giving opponents some concern about our long-range shooting potential. Which may well just open some space in behind for Bent and Pavlyuchenko and nippy twerps like Lennon to do some real damage within.

Bostock look the business, too. More please.

Thanks for the highlights Harry, we had no coverage whatsoever down under, even bloody setanta had some obscure tie which I think would have been seen by more at the game than on TV.
I think Huddlestone should go to Wieght Watchers, lose about 15 kgs and then get Linford Christie in as we have done with Sir Les, to help him with his speed.
Lampard, Gerard, Huddlestone that would give Mr Cappello a headache.

Thanks again Harry for the highlghts, in times of need you always come through.

If Bent keeps going I will take back what I said of him, his third was pure class.

bent 8.5 and modric an 8

as for harry saying that zagreb didnt turn up i think that in many ways we didnt give them a chance to play, we closed fast and tackled well, now to hope we can take this form into the league COYS!!!!

It did remind me of the pre-season games, Hudd to Bent to goal, rinse, repeat, celebrate.

But thats no bad thing, build the confidence, get on a run, when did we last lose? Udinese?

I thought The Boss looked good when he came on, lively and not afraid to take on a shot from range. Great to see him promoted to the first team on the website as well.

My first game at the lane for a while. Thouh Lennon & Bale did very well down the left in the first half, virtually everything went through them. Both quieter in the second when Hudd & Modric took over but I think you are being really harsh on Zokora. He had one of his best games for us, he was really energetic. In a good way.

Only Hutton was below par in my view, and didn't really help Bentley out on the flank at all after the first few minutes. Nice to see Dawson not f**k up too.

Thank god! Or Harry Redders! Or Both! Or are they one and the same? 8O

Anyhoo I have been banging on since the start of the season about our midfielders needing to shoot more often which will occasionally result in a direct goal or get a deflected goal, rebound for a tap in, chaos for a penalty etc! We are now seeing the benefits of our midfielders banging in the shots (on the pitch rather than in Faces nightclub).

And to all those that have been slating Bent ..... a large slice of humble pie is required! Lets face it we all knew he wasn't a Ronaldinho type who will dance round 7 players and curl on in from 35 yards. He's the finisher, a Linekeresque type, who relies heavily on the supply and Thudds suppy into him was sublime as was Bentys finishing! I stuck 20 quid on him being top English goalscorer in the Prem this season because the boy is class. It just remains to be seen if he will get enough games this season in the Prem to earn that title!

Thanks for the Highlights Harry.

Small number of fans? There were bloody loads fore some obscure reason, then of course there's the Adebayor song which was knocking about before the game. Then the chants of "England, England, England...", not too bad actually! But lets start singing some songs about the actual players on the pitch for a change...

Enough of that moaning, what a game though - I'm still trying to convince myself that Zagreb were stern opposition, we were simply formidable!

Firstly, why sing for Defoe? I joined in last night with the name darren bent instead! It didn't have the same ring but he deserves it more than anyone right now Quality!
Secondly, I have a second favorite team after last night. The Bad Boy Blues sang and sang and sang. I was sat real close to them and although it reports trouble, the only thing I saw them do against the rules was the flares. They created a FANTASTIC atmosphere in very high spirits. I didn't leave the ground until about half an hour after full time because we were still singing to eachother. That is what european nights are all about. Thank you Dinamo.

totally agree with mid field shooting from outside the box, at last the follow up play comes in to its own, where Bent is a shark. Keep smacking it at them, scare the fuk out of them, Modric & Bentley in the last couple of weeks have been great, putting it in, creating stuff. By the way NO Jenas & look at the result, After the bindipper game we allsaid he was missed..... Didn't seem to be this time, but have to agree they made Zokora look good, He's pants, Bostock looked GREAT, BRING HIM ON U CUNTS

Looking forward to the weekend now, a win on Sunday, our expecation levels are going to exceedingly high.

Then Carling Cup action, im excited, i think we can make the final again, ill be at the lane for this match and im excited, Ryanair return from belfast 10 quid taxes and all included!!!!!!!!

Was at the game last night and the most comfortable evening there in a long while. Zagreb did not look at all interested and weren't very good (apart from their left back who was tidy). Any team that makes Huddlestone look mobile should have a serious look at themselves. Take nothing away, he done a very good job, now lets see it in the prem. Quality from Bent. 4 touches, 4 goals, one ruled out for offside. Clinical stuff.

Hutton looks well off it but good game for him last night, bearing in mind this is pretty much his pre-season.

Those Zagreb fans were pretty entertaining for the first half hour... before we got our goals.

Harry, I can only agree with what you've said. I did feel like a pre-season friendly. Credit to Bent though - when given a chance, he took it - and Huddlestone was sensational. The only part I'd disagree with is your rating for Zokora. He always looks better in Europe and I thought he did well. It's a shame Hutton is in such poor form. He was so good last season so I can only assume that he's injured or his new kid is giving him sleepless nights.

Oh, and if anyone wants to know why the Dinamo Zagreb fans are such nutters, I heartily recommend Behind The Curtain by Jonathan Wilson. It's a great read about eastern European football.

Great highlights. Nice to see all of them as well, not just the goals.

I dont care who it was we were playing Bents form was quality last night, all the goals, even the offside was done in two touches, a control & shot. It was fantastic forward play.

Hudd was my MoM too, his passing was world-class as was the goal.

On that, watch Bentley take the corner for Hudds goal. I dont think you can see it on those highlights but when he hits the ball he's still looking at Dawson in the six-yard area then he puts it on Huddlestones foot. Absolutely amazing.

Modric's just getting better and better too.

Long may it continue COYS

I don't know if any of u guys have read this, but it just shows how much of a gentleman our former coach is .....

Dear Friend,

Part of the greatness of football means accepting the rules of a sporting event that is quite simply a game.

After almost 20 years in this profession, I know all the unwritten rules of football, which is why I accept the decision made by the bosses at Tottenham Hotspur. Now it is simply time to say goodbye and thank you.

Coincidently, it is exactly one year ago today that I first entered the world of English football, and it is today that I say goodbye and thank you to you all.

We joined the team, filled with enthusiasm, when they were in the relegation zone, in a similar situation to the one they are in at the moment. We had a good start and got to the middle of the League table. As well as this, we also qualified for Europe, which had seemed like an almost impossible task. It took great a effort on behalf of the whole team but we achieved out goal despite the difficulties.

We also managed to win a Cup after nine years without success, which brought immense joy to the team and the fans. For this reason we can say that the season was a tremendously successful one.

During the summer we had quite a difficult pre-season due to the changes in the team, which meant that we couldn’t work as calmly as a pre-season requires. Some of the new players were very young, and despite their quality they needed time to adapt and mature, which unfortunately the intensity of the competition hasn’t allowed them to do yet.

When Robbie Keane and Berbatov left the club, it had a huge effect on the team as they were key players with regard to tactics, goal scoring abilities and also as team mates they had an important influence. All this has led to a situation which I hope will change as soon as possible because the Club and the fans deserve success.

First of all, I want to tell the Spurs fans how grateful I am for the way they have treated me. Thank you for your support, respect and kindness, and even for your constructive criticism. You have made me feel very happy for many months and I am only sorry not to have been able to offer you more magical evenings like the one at Wembley last February. You have always been with the team and I thank you for unconditional support.

I would also like to send a special message to all the people who work at the Club. The family that is Tottenham Hotspur; you are the people who make it all possible. You have treated me excellently, both on a professional and personal level, I send you my eternal gratitude and affection.

Lastly, I want to thank Tottenham and the Directors for giving me this opportunity to fulfil my dream. I had always wanted to coach a Club in England - the home of football – to feel the emotion and live the experience of the Premier League.

Thank you all, goodbye, and TO DARE IS TO DO…COME ON YOU SPURS!

I think he may be referring to Adebayor and Bendtner. They should their desire for biting and scraching each other during their 5-1 Carling Cup semi-final second leg DEFEAT to the Tottenham.

"Cry like babies" might be a more fitting description of Willy Gallas'own tendencies however.

In all the excitement of winning against nearly everyone last week (even if the ar$e result felt like a win) I nearly forgot how pissed off I was with the Ramos/Comolli debacle. TBH I've now drawn a line under it and any mention now of ramos, baby food, comolli has been cast into the abyss of unwanted annoyances (bar the winning CC run).

Time to look forward and not back, a history to be proud of wasn't made by constantly reminiscing, but by striving for the future and focussing on the present.

An immediate retraction may be required Summer. The HH article regarding Rebrov's ill-aimed remarks was just one example of how many might get upset by such posts. The fallen fought for our freedom and our right to enjoy peace in our time and to enjoy the luxury of football. To even start equating the two is edging on disrespect or ignorance. Too much of our modern day culture is ruined by the loss of manners that we as a country was built on.

It never left in my eyes. 6 pack in the fridge soon to be tackled.

As for the new shirt sponsor, this is the last season, is it not, for the gambling company? I think I read that they weren't renewing. Hopefully we get someone (Holsten?) that might be able to give us near what the casino did. Unfortunately, tough financial times may mean that we'll take whats available.

On the bright side, look at the poor spammers who had to sellotape a4 pieces of paper over their shirts because their sponsors went down the pan, as did their owners (nearly).

although I wouldn't want to give Puma any ideas for the design of next season"s shorts.

The all white kit of last night should be our first kit in the league as well. Burn those stripey soxs (or give them to the Croatia fans to set alight in the stands).

Any ideas how Croatians smuggling firecrackers into the lane in their underpants has ended up with Spurs being investigated by UEFA? Idiots smuggle explosives in & set them off... we step in and put them out - Job done. Isn't any kind of action against us like doing the Fire Brigade for putting out a fire? I'm confused.

I thought the game was absolutely perfect from the perspective of giving THUD confidence, Modric more confidence, and Bent the most confidence. This will be needed when we are away to Man City. Even Gomes not being in the news has to be good.

Big question then is will we play 4-5-1 and switch to 4-4-2 at Man City in second half? Pav will start as he is rested I assume.... And will Hutton take on Robinho? *gulp* I'd stick Corluka there and keep Bale at left to deal with SWP. THUD and the Modfather (You gotta love that term!) in the middle and start with Lennon and Bentley. Mmmmmmmmm. Methinx Sunday is going to be entertaining. It will be like Darth Vader vs Saruman. Woever attacks more and gets lucky will run with it. What are the odds on 3-3?

Ref the matchups, both the Baler and SuperAl are a teeny bit wibbly at the min. Fitness issues or just the sudden post Ramos binge drinking that Arry's allowed? I know he's unpopular but I'd get the Zok to do a man marking job on that Robinho geezer - just foul him anywhere in their half.

the world gone mad, so how do we tackle this?

1. Get someone like julian clarey or Rsol, to checkout the away support as they come in... "Is that a rocket in you pants or are you just pleased to see me?"
2. Get bomb squad sniffer dogs in at the turnstiles.
3. Petition UEFA to get some common sense

sneaky meant to follow it up with a ;) welcome back. You've got to agree that the Dazzler is doing what he does best (thats how he scored at charlton) and his service last night was better than anything he's had in the last 15 months - opponents aside. If zagreb closed down a bit more and were a tighter unit, Bent wouldn't have got his chances and we'd be a bit sorrier because of it. IMO he still needs a solid point man to play off. Something like Peskey Hesky but who also scores goals.

I agree with you, although Bent hasn't shown himself to have enough muscle in the really physical games when he's on his own up front.

If its a question of guile over grit, then unless we can sort out our soft centres, we're still likely to have trouble against tight physical defence minded teams.

That reply I would have to place as comedy platinum.

[Ten times rarer than gold]

"What does he look like in disguise?" Absolute f***ing genius, sir.

You flatter me.

But I like it.............

Rubbish. Pure ODM in my book. Don't fight it.

Right. Just got back from Chicago.

Can someone tell me if the bloke who scored the hat trick last night is the same Darren Bent who has been missing Barn doors from 10 feet for last 15 months ?

are you Obama in disguise?

No of course I couldn't be he's a West Ham supporter.

Has anyone else notice how our form picked up as soon as Jamie's firm blocked the blog ?

Coincidence ?

Does tie in with a number of the squad having previously felt 'exiled'.... conclusive I'd say.

Gazza is and always will be a legend in Spurs history. That superb curling freekick against the Gooners was my favourite Spurs goal for long time. But I have to say that Bentley goal last week tops it.

Thanks for the highlights Harry, we had no coverage whatsoever down under, even bloody setanta had some obscure tie which I think would have been seen by more at the game than on TV.
I think Huddlestone should go to Wieght Watchers, lose about 15 kgs and then get Linford Christie in as we...

I've heard he's got knees like Ledley's.

He's been a free agent for while now, perhaps it's true.

Anyone noticed the arshavin quotes, inferring that zenit better let him leave or he'll cause trouble and refuse to play?

"the most important thing is a feeling of inner fulfilment, and I don't feel that at all"

For "feeling of inner fulfilment" read: This is my dream, and no-one must stand in my way.

Ring a bell? Does anyone want another berbastyle player at this club anytime soon. Given his club's current position vs our clubs current position, I can't help but suspect that he see's Spurs as a stepping stone to some other premiership club.

Anyway, didn't he sign a contract at St Petersburg?
