The war of attrition has, as we speak, been won. Quite who by remains to be seen.
The deal between Zenit St Petersburg and THFC has reached some class of conclusion and the player heralded as Pointy Shouty Bloke's replacement is on his way to The Lane.
Zenit were adamant that he was worth €25 million and Spurs were convinced he wasn't. Quite where they met is anyones's guess. My hope is it was nearer what the man with a first from Cambridge had in mind originally, rather than the thought of either Benty or Johnny Two Saints getting injured forcing his hand to a fuller figure.
This deal may yet collapse. For reasons well documented before this piece. The devil has been in the detail and if ever there was a precedent set for transfer tomfoolery then it was this one.
I have to admit a slight sense of sowhatness about this transfer. Don't get me wrong, he may well still cause the havoc required but as an effective replacement for both Bob & Berba it is, to quote that hairless Hogmanay Herbert off Sky Sports, 'a big ask.'
There's no doubt that Tottenham suddenly have a real array of creativity across the park. Suddenly so many proven providers. The doom mongering Bulgarian's form dipped and he looked for someone to blame. As per his insular wants I am convinced he looked to himself first and longest. (The pondering artiste in him would have curiously enjoyed that.) And then didn't have to look much farther. The squad of last season was full of people who didn't quite service him. Didn't quite do him justice.
Apart from Bob, of course.
And if if there was ever a key to this three lock box then the departure of that prize fight knacker was it. Keane's agenda was straightforward as that of a suicide bomber. And as a result, equally impossible to guard against. Bob acted alone, focused and probably motivated by little more than a desire to die for something... money, fame or the conclusion of a row he had with someone who dared to substitute him.
Keane going made things much much easier for the troubled Mitka. The springboard for all his own indulgencies, flights of fantasy, call them what you will was handed to him. Bob's bunk to Barryland is the justification he can use to cloak his own naked ambition.
The irony will not be lost on Berbatov that now Wendy has rearranged the entire team to accommodate both coherant defending and attacking... the tortured artist is doing the off.
But now he won't want to dwell on that too much. Afterall, the boy has much dwelling to do and little time in which to do it. As his team mates were shrieking and making merry after the Carling Cup win, Berbatov's interpretation of a random urine test in an antichamber at Wembley was that this somehow emphasised his isolation. Not for him the simple joys that the other labourers enjoyed. His destiny was detachment.
You or I would have served them their glass of widdle as fast as and got back to the party. Our hero was soul searching.
Quite how this fuzz of melancholia will cope with Shrek bawling 'Get yer fooking foot round the c*nting thing yer fooking half dead c*nt yer' is anyone's guess.
Berbatov is in for one hell of a culture shock. His moping won't be tolerated in the 'can do culture' of Old Trafford where he will be expected by his colleagues and a capacity crowd to excell immeadiately and consistently if he is to survive.
The consequences?
The old alice band won't have much to do if he goes from Squirrel Nutkins to Terry Nutkin.
David Bentley was spotted in Ikea Croydon buying a 50p hotdog and told an onlooker he is due to sign for Tottenham this Friday.
DON'T FORGET YOUR FANTASY FOOTBALL ENTRY!

Im not so sure Arshavin is the right answer to the squad at the moment. We could currently chalenge Cheski in a who´s got the most midfielders´top trump type competition.
We need a point Man. Bent is looking at getting there, but remains to be shown in the league. Proof is in the Pudding as they say.
To be honest I couldnt see Bob the Knob fitting into this new formation. And with Wantaway mitka, its looking more like clever business. Hopefully we get that cut throat centre forward before Friday. Arshavin should not be the last man in.
Great news on 'smoothbum' HH. Really think that lad will do well in the premiership. So are you saying that the Berba off to Manure is correct then? This story originated from the Daily Mail and whereas they write a story moving every possible to every possible team, all the tabloids seem to have picked up on this one. If true it just shows the Henry bid was as we all thought another transparent Fergie mind game to unsettle Vlad Tepes from our rank.
Do you have word from the inside regarding berba's departure then HH?
(great read as always - thanks!)
Well if he signs that is good. Another threat is what's needed.
My concern is not so much Corluka (will he won't he) but Veloso. He plays in the position where we have been weak for so long and if he was to sit in front of the back 3 (or 4) we would be strong at the back, craetive in the middle and moderate up front. Any news?

agreed
I would like to see Arshavin and Corluka before the Boro game. HH I showed Marcos Alvarez a new home property yetserday and tried tapping him for Berba news or Arshavin news but I couldn't understand his response. He kept saying I cannot say in a heavily foreign accent.
Great article as always HH. As for the bit in bold at the bottom I think that Bentley has already come to Spurs. I think I'm right seeing as I distinctly remember him celebrating quite emphatically infront of me during the Roma game. But hey I could be delusional!
Im off on my lunch. Anyone want anything from the shop?????
I want to post something constructive, or at least titillating. But the hijinx and shenanigans various this transfer window have left me feeling drained and apathetic, where I should otherwise be delighted and optimistic at the impending arrival of Arshavin. I might get a rise out of Veloso though, but I doubt that will happen given the controversial grooming of that Jenas fellow.
I return to my corner to voyeuristically skulk at this board, gorging myself every once in a while on the prose of HH and 23 to 10.
It might be my hormones are playing up. I miss Jose Dominguez. I wonder what he's up to these days.

Mr Bentley will never sign for Spurs. I am absolutely sure of that. Harry simply got it wrong. What you saw at the Roma match will not stand up in the court of public opinion. There are some very clever people weighing in on this blog. They said the Bentley deal did not go down. Please show some respect. Don't rock the boat mate.

He signed for FC Kaiserslautern in 1999 for £250,000, before playing his final seasons in the Qatari league. He is the shortest player to have ever played in the Premier League. The now-retired Dominguez recently played in the Beach soccer all-star game in the Algarve, Portugal. It is not known what he is currently doing work wise
Re Arshavin has anyone else seen this from Russian website?
'Arshavin to stay at St Pete
Premier league champions Zenit Saint Petersburg claim their star man Andrey Arshavin will stay at the club until the end of his contract.
In a statement posted on the club's website, Zenit say they had set a deadline of july 15th for any potential move for Arshavin.
They added that they haven't received any "satisfactory offers" for the forward.
It means Russia’s Euro-2008 hero will stay and make his Champions League debut with Zenit in September.
Earlier this month, the Saint Petersburg club rejected a $US 24 million bid for Arshavin from Spanish super-club Barcelona'.
Also Zenit crashed out of Cup to lower devision club 1-0 so how good is he?
GOOD LUCK TO THE BOYS FOR SAURDAY

You don't get much for your money these days.
Wagon wheels used to be twice as big, and you could get a nearly in his prime Gazza for £2m.
Berbatov off - Yes please! He will hold our new look young attacking team back with his slow hold up play and moods. He's world class, but not what we need now. A committed Berbatov yes, but not the sort we seen most of last year. Minus his goals against Reading (6 was it in all) his scoring return was average... poor actually. He will not be dearly missed.
I'd love us to Sign Corluka, Veloso and Arshavin this week, but even stil we'd need another striker I think. Maybe if Blackburn land Zigic Santa Cruz will be available??? I'd have him.
hi to all .will he go or will he stay. am totally sick of it. love the player but could really do without the drama queen stuff .nice info mr hh. i thank you kindly for the itk, fist post on this site so i guess you got another cherry hh lol
Assuming Berba is off (and i too will believe it when i see it), then we need a top class striker..
Arshavin is not the answer.. i'd be quite happy for him to come in but we still need a striker..
the thought of relying on Darren Bent for the whole season has me waking up in cold sweats..
I'd be slightly sceptical about signing Arsh but i'd still like to bring him in and who knows we might be on to a winner.. same goes for Bent i guess..
the way our squad is shaping up we really ought to be hammering Boro at the weekend..

Er...how can any one say anything negative on the subject of signing Arshavin??! He was the best player in a very good Russian team in the summer and is coveted by half of Europe. If he comes, it will be our best signing of the summer, mark my words.

That was from a statement on the official Zenit on 21/7. Things would appear to have moved on somewhat since then.
I know its only been pre season Bimi but i think Bent has shown how confident he is in front of goal. He looks far deadlier than Keane ever did in front of goal and he's twice as fast as Berba. He suits the lone striker role to perfection!
I too think AA could be a risk and whilst he's adequate replacement for Keane he's no lone wolf, but agree if he comes we could be onto a winner. Lets just hope as HH said that his valuation is closer to the one that Mr Levy envisaged IMO anything over £16m sees us being ripped off.
I think with Berba seeming to be leaving that we will need to sign a striker. Who it will be I do not know. The list in reality is quite short due to player fees and availablilty. Huntelaar IMO would be a good signing but he'll cost us £18m!
Combined fee for AA and Huntelaar could be around £35m (AA £17m & KJH £18m) not a bad reinvestement of Berba's fee!

Grazza, between you and I, amongst friends and all that, do you not find Chocolate Nurishment a demon for flatulence?
The average daily rectal windy pop emission for a male adult is 13.4 emissions a day. (That's a little fact you can all keep for free). Nurishment seems to triple or even quadruple this average. Your thoughts, please.
The last time we got to transfer deadline day without a striker on board, we went out and bought Rasiak!
The good news is that Spurs now act as they have a specific list of targets and act with military precision to get our men. While Levy was bringing in Modric, Gomes, Gio & Bentley, and shipping out those who are surplus or wanted pastures new, our rivals appeared to be just hanging around waiting to see what names the agents come up with. Moyes and O'Neill have been complaining all summer that they need more faces, and have finally responded by buying journeymen a couple of weeks before the season starts.
If we fail to bring in a proper replacement for Berba, I will never lay the blame at the door of the man with the Cambridge First.
I remember Teddy going off against The Barcodes a few years back and all we had to bring on was Gary Docherty (they nicked it at the end too....effing JJ!!). That was just after the window had closed and Goddle had failed to get in cover (to be fair he WAS after Michael Ricketts).
The moral of this tale is that if Berba goes, cover must be found if we are to prosper. JR clearly doesn't trust Pekhart quite enouh just yet
Good Afternoon Nunchucks....
From one true connoisseur to another i must admit i have never noticed these same, gusty side effects as yourself.
What i can promise you though is that i will enjoy a tin tonight and report my findings tomorrow.
What is a good read though is the Nutritional Values on one of those bad boys!!
For those of you who are put out by us selling our star strikers, please be reassured by the huge wedge we are getting back in return.
I recall the time when the Woolwich Arsenal started to pull ahead of us, and become one of the "top 4" while we floundered in mediocrity.
An investigation by Metropolitan Police identified two causes of the grwoing disparity:
1. At the time when we really needed to start buying some top class international players, the Woolwich bought Bergkamp, a move which Sir Alan said would bankrupt them, while I seem to recall we bought Chris Armstrong.
2. As it started to become apparent that we were falling behind and needed to catch up quick, we discovered that our exisiting players were worth bugger all. While our mate Arse was selling Le Grand Sulk for a profit of 22 million, we couldn't get 2 bob for any of our lot. Therefore, our transfer budget was always restricted to new cash while those other folks were able to add their profits to their budget.
I now celebrate the fact that we can sell players and get large amounts of wedge in as I can remember the time when we couldn't give away our players. It shows that Levy is getting it right by signing these players in the first place.
harry there's a lot of forum-worthy material being posted on here..

I know it comes from the Daily Mail but this story did grab my attention:
LINK
I know many of us will remember Freddie as the poor mans henry but you have to admit since moving to spain and playing under Juande Ramos, Kanoute seems to have improved vastly, to top it all off, he's used to playing in the lone striker role for Sevilla and was hugely successful playin under Ramos' system in both La Liga and the UEFA cup aswell as having past premier league experience
Quite how we'll convince Sevilla and Mr Del Nido to part with Freddie is whole other story.
I have to admit i completely forgot about him as an option but one that I think would work.
... and back to football
I DEMAND TO KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING REGARDS "EL VELOSO"
please
I for one would love to sign Arshavin, i dont think anyone else would be a bigger statement. Everything about it excites me from the value, the negotiations, the fact that it would soften the blow of Berba leaving and make him feel a bit less self important, the fact that its a massive gamble.
Its like your long term bird leaving you on the thursday and by friday night youre jumping into bed with an underwear model!
Ive got absolutely no idea if he'll turn out to be any good but what i do think that hes worth the gamble. Exactly the same question marks were raised when we signed Berba from Leverkusen, im no student of the European game but id certainly never heard of him, and like JGM, what little ive seen of AA would make me have him over Keane.
Also, i believe the fee is largely irrelavent, let the main men deal with that, im sure they wont spend what we cant afford. i also believe that the figures quoted are more often than not inclusive of wages and fees etc - not just the transfer fee. So its likely that any publicised fee is inflated anyway.
OK, so nutirtion drinks increase the daily fart ratio - but do they add anything in regard to flavour of smell?
Someone other that AA needs to replace Berbs if he goes. AA is to replace Keano right? Let get this sorted Ramos
Harry - your writings are the bible to spurs faithfull.....
Looks like things could be getting a whole lot worse for Thaksin Shinawatra and Man Citeh fans
LINK
If he is deported theres no doubt he'll be convicted of the charges against him and no doubt that he'll fail the fit and proper person test that the FA are due to carry out on him. This will leave Man Citeh without an owner and leave Thaksin without the reported £800m he has to fund the citeh revolution. I think that Hughes will have to sell players to make sure the wages are paid until a new owner comes in.
Its sad for football and the FA should be shot for allowing people like thaksin to buy football clubs. HOWEVER.... It will mean 6 points for us and hopefully a few choice picks from their squad!
Taxi, for Mr Berbatov!
LINK
Some people seem to base their misgivings about Arshavin on his absence of Premier League experience. Personally, I take encouragement from it, especially bearing in mind his reported eagerness to test himself in the English game. The guy is up for it, which is more than we can say of Berbatov. Add that to his abundant skills and intelligence, and we have a player.
Remember what he said about Spurs being the only club who had dared to continue negotiations? There's something old-school about that. It tells of a man who appreciates being valued, respects bravery and determination, and who will return those qualities in equal measure.
Maybe I'm being romantic. But I love Spurs, and romance is in my blood.

ARSHAVIN IS COMPLETE!
So we can rest easy.

JUst seen this Thiago Neves score 2 Serious goals for Brazil in the Olympics, we need to buy this guy! I heard we were watchin him a few weeks ago, but we need to act.
kwakspur - maybe the message was meant to red 'Arshavin is complete... waste of money'.
Just kidding.
Great news if true. The drinks are on Harry.
You say Romance is dead? Then I say, Long live Romance.
According to many bio's and descriptions of Andriy, by all accounts he is a simple man. He does his job like a model professional. He shuns the limelight, so much so that you can see him squint at the merest hint of a camera. He is married and settled with kids, and is more likely after a match, to go home to the family, to curl up in bed with a cup of Horlicks (so much better for than Nourishment for the wind factor) and write his next book, than be dragged out of a side door of Faeces nightclub to be snapped by a daily rag with his trousers droopily flashing his grey undergarments.
It could be just what we need. A level head, still bursting with an ambition to achieve things (cups, championships, perhaps another degree?) which will help settle the side.
I think he could give Mills and Boon a run for their money when he arrives, such is the potential level of romance in the chapter that he can write with Tottenham Hotspur.
Best bit of news I've heard since eh Bently bought that hotdog .. Bale has signed until 2012 .. this kid is going to be immense for us.
Nine_Thirty-Seven
We dont know how much he cost yet!
I hope Levy has done the ruskies out of some wedge! we all know what a double hard bastard of a negotiator he is and it really wouldnt surprise me if Levy gets him for the right price. Just read on TPC that AA will be followed into the club by another striker and a CB. Apparently Ramos has persuaded Levy and Comolli to back in for Kanoute and I assume the CB will be Corluka
"And I see Noodles has said the same. So I trust it is a definate."
Can we trust the word of a man who divines meaning in messages from his PotNoodle?
Well said, Trembly. Romance is not dead. Romance is very much alive and living in N17.

gotta say an absolute stonker (which is good) regarding AA, and just to change subject yet equally reassure everyone, in the lasagne season which regardless to that 'incident' in the end,was a great season ,we had an equally new team in regard to new faces, take your tainios, davids , mido, lennon, jenas,LYP,stalteri etc and so as a result i am convinced we can succeed and gel, fuck the skeptics! Razors at the ready.. A one, a two, a three...
AA will love it here: the pitches, the crowds, the training, the discipline, the work ethic. Not to mention the goals he'll score against the so-called 'top four'. Yes, creative visualisation.... I can see the top four disintegrating... I can see us top one. We create our own reality (with a little help from ENIC's millions).
Despite inevitable settling in and gelling hiccups, all these new players are superior grade. Weigh that against initial anxieties and you still have a team that is fitter, faster, more creative and dynamic, and more qualitative.
And minus the albatros.
BimitarDerbatov
I think you're being a bit harsh on Bent. Theres no doubt in my mind the guy deserves a run in the side. I believed all along that it was the system and not the player that hindered his progress last year. And as I've said before he's put the graft in over the summer, not let the doubters get to him and he's got his head down and concentrated on doing what he does best. Who can argue with how he has taken his goals in pre-season? Left foot, right foot, headers, he's done the lot. His first against Roma, the goal against Dotrmund and the goal against Celtic, all finishes of a supremely confident striker. With him as our main man and a return for Freddie I'm sure we wont be missing Berba or Keane at all.
Just seen the pictures of the lads training. two things stuck out! 1) How good did Berba look? Pirouetting in mid air, clearly sending Luka the wrong way (i will miss bits like that) 2) Gunter is a big boy no? never noticed his height or how broad he is, surely a quality CB in a years time??
Cheddar - the bias will turn around. The redtop hacks will soon swap sides once the Spurs bandwagon gets rolling in force, and we might start to get even billing at last. Although I expect when we're 10 points ahead of the Ar5e come March, Charlie Nicholas and the like will still say they'll make up the points.
Charlie Nicholas couldn't be any more blinkered!
So much so that when asked about the teams to finish 5th, Spurs were not mentioned, but apparently Villa have bought well this summer so he's tippipng them for 5th.....Hmmmm....TWAT!

Just goes to perpetuate my theory that SKY are biased towards the top four! I wonder on what Basis Nicholas can say that Arsenal, despite being even weaker than last year can win the title? Man Utd (if they sign Berba) Chelsea (Big Phil in charge) & Spurs (strengthened more than anyone) Even Liverpool to an extent have far better squads than the scummers.

Careful, Casanova. Similar words are still reverberating in my ears from some clown who was playing in Germany at the time, mumbling something about only wanting to come to Spurs because they showed commitment to him and significant long term interest.

Harry, when I first heard you I had a Messrs Corbett and Barker moment, and ythought you said 'Smoothbum to sign in daze'.
Must admit, much as I'd like to see AA at the club, I had misgivings about him being drugged and forcibly brought to WHL. It would have validated what that idiot, Sepp Blather, said about slaves.
I'm so glad it's all worked out nicely.

2 things about Bales new contract
1) He was the one player Fergie really wanted last summer and he joined US over them!!
2) Does his contract have a hairclip clause? He must be provided with fresh hairclips before every game.

Nunchucks, I'd already begun to blank him from my mind. Even the Carling Cup win has become bitter-sweet. But you're right.
Is it rash to believe Spurs have realised that, if they keep doing what they do, they'll keep getting what they get?
Hope not. This time the mix, the approach, the vision will work. There I go again. Be patient, my beating heart.
If i'd have been in charge of the official statement re: Baler's contract extension then the next paragraph would have read.

Reports just coming in that Eric Sykes & Tommy Cooper, wearing brown dust coats were spotted delivering a length of rolled carpet at the GOOD INWARDS at The Lane.

Think how much it costs Trevor Francis. I've heard he pays through the nose for his congestion charge!
The cosmopolitan surroundings of White Hart Lane! Will remind AA of growing up in the soviet union!
I reckon we should use £20m to get Richards from Man City to replace King (till dont think he will play more than 20% of games this season and we have enough goal scoring ability in the midfield, and use £8m on a robust strong striker to hold up the ball if we want to play that way occasionally.

Actually, I don't know whether he'll have seen so many different coloured people in all his life, not that he'll be walking from WHL to seven sisters tube mind.
Firstly Zenit has an 'interesting recruitment policy' and secondly St. Petersburg is really quite affluent in comparison to other parts of Russia, not that we don't live the highlife in N17 of course. Just wait til next summers Carnival!
St Petersburg is not so different to Tottenham, in that it's home to more than 200 museums - most notably the Hermitage Museum, with its interiors of the former imperial residence and huge art collection.
In many ways, the Hermitage is similar to Bruce Castle Museum in Tottenham, except (unlike Bruce Castle) its grounds were never witness to me playing as a nipper - most notably on and in the hollow log, formally at the centre of its green sward and near the great oak.

I believe it had something to do with alot of their fans wanting their team to match. I could be wrong of course, and I can't remember the source of my info, but a quick check on their team photo's will either back me up or put me in front of a KGB shooting squad.

"So many different coloured people in his life" Classic! Are you saying that the abundance of colour, flora and fawna, kebabs, to creole, to jefrk chicken, oil drum BBQs will blow Mr Arshavins mind??
I remember driving upto WHL for a boxing day game once, got there very very early, WHL & Seven Sisters had an air of nuclear holocaust about it! Only the freaks were out and all the shops were boarded up! May remind Andrei of Chernobyl.

Greetings from Manhattan where I just got out of Arshavin's twin brother's taxi. I am sure it was him, either that or the poor bald chap from Leningrad just had severe halitosis.
With AA is playing for Zenit right now is there someting wrong with Mr. Noodles tale today? He seems to have jumped ze gun, non?
So are you all still confident he will sign in a couple of day's even tho he is playing for Zenit at the moment?
He might well still sign but it prob wont be this week, if a deal had been struck then there is no way he would be playing for Zenit now!

I'm sure they will all but match, but I put this down to the fact that The Great Bear isn't exactly famous for ethnic integration on mass.
If what you say is true, this is reminiscent of a Le Pen interview in 98 or 00. When asked what he thought of the French National Squad, he replied: "It's good, except there are too many blacks in it." And then there was a moments silence. Like when somebody dies.
Nunchucks, in my mind I can still feel under my hands the sand that ran the length of that log's interior; and hear my plimsolled feet echoing as I scampered from one opening to the other.

Expect Corluka to be with us any day now then, swiftly follwed out the Eastlands exit door by a very angry, bemused Mark Hughes screming "what have i done!!"
Word on the grapevine from my mate Marvin:
Levy is apparently under the stadium, escape to victory style, to whip Andrex Softest-bum-in-Russia Arshavin, out at half time.
If Arshavin is playing for Zenit, then that's because he must still be an employee. Fair enough. Just because he might be leaving they wouldn't tell him, 'Ok, son, take it easy. Put your feet up.'
Personally, I won't believe he's signed till I see his wife in one of Harry's chain of nail extension bars or internet cafes.

Is the louis garcia option closed? He could fit the bill as an auxiliary
May I be the flame for all the dubious minded moths on this site by saying that not only do I wish I was the bloke who put £1000 on Bent to finish as this season's top scorer at 40/1 before the odds were slashed but that I will be placing a similar though far less attractive bet sometime tomorrow, so as to back my mouth with what little spare spondoolies I have.
With or without the little farley's ruski, I don't believe scoring will be any more of an issue than it was last season; it's the 'goals against' column which worries me. Has Wendy transformed Zokora into the player we supposedly paid for or JJ into a top 6 midfield sweeper? I suspect not is my answer to both those questions. How long will Woody & King last before one of them is injured. And has Daws been injected with enough Nous & Steel(remember their tv show in the 70s)to step successfully into the breach? Again I have my doubts.
With the sort of midfield we've been waiting a good few years for finally here, the 'goals for' column seems fairly taken care of, I only hope the last 2 weeks of this window sees us ensuring no replays of last season's 'goals against' debacle.
Superb work during the break Harry.
Go on the Spurs!
I am concerned on a couple of counts with the Russian deal. The first is that a lot of the hype on this guy is based upon performances as part of a partnership with Pavlyuchenko; the last time we took one of a pair, we got Rebrov (and not Shevchenko). Secondly if we bought the pair would they a) be succesful and settle into the EPL and b) be successful but in turn limit the team options that Ramos clearly wants as part of his vision for the team.
Are we strong enough financially to get them both? Isn't their combined fee (as DL would reasonably estimate it) about what we are reported to have offered for Villa....co-incidence? If we were to have a "pair" as an option that might be considered excessive by some but genius by others.
On the topic of Berbatov, it would seem only right and proper for him to pay back the pay increase he got last year on the proviso of honouring his contract, wouldn't it???

Mayeb with the midfield we now booast we will create a plethora of chances for our strikers, or striker, but what if he cant put the ball in the net? What if we suffer from the Gooners fear of shooting in front of goal? Carving teams apart with our marvellous midfield, then imploding infront of the goals . . . surely not!!!
No idea about the Garcia deal, seems to be dead in the water, maybe never an actual option. I know we shouldnt doubt Ramos & Levy as to date their signings have been tremendous, but i'm getting ever increasingly worried about our Defensive cover, our need for a quality DM and obviously our need to 2 new strikers.

FAT FRANK has signed a new contract with the chelscum . . .
Speaking of which, what do you think our chances would be of getting Mikel Jon Obi? With Ballack, Essien, LAmpard, Deco, Cole, Malouda, SWP etc all vying for midfield births, Mikel could be a realistic target. And, in my opinion, has the ability to be an absolutely fantastic player. Exactly the type of player we are looking for in DM/CM role. Opinions please!!!
Re: Finn
There's a degree of risk with any player. The fact that Wendy want's him tells me all I need to know about whether he's a risk worth taking. Do you remember how kanoute played for us and how he played for seville? Whoever Ramos wants IS the right player.
As for B/berbatov, he HAS to go. I reckon all that "would love him to stay" guff in the press was designed to tickle manure's wallet or take the edge off him staying should they not come in for him.

Re: RJ1882
I suspect our chances of aquiring any chelski players is limited by not only price but any player of that level accepting to leave a CL environment for a Uefa one. Then again, maybe last years league cup final was fairly persuasive with regards to where Wendy's boys are headed.
I suppose the most frequently left out players at chelski offer the best chance though.

If Mikel were available, surely the price would be in and around the £15m bracket? I think this guy could be awesome, and with Essien ahead of him for that role at Chelsea he isn’t going to get much of a look in. How many champions League minutes is Mikel going to play? A move across London, where expectations are high and an excellent manager lies in waiting could appeal to someone like Mikel, who is in danger of becoming a forgotten man at Chelsea.
Mikel or Diarra for DM role for me. Both experienced premiership players, excellent holding midfielders who like a tackle and have good distribution of the ball.

here's what i don't get: Manure are clearly in crisis re their striking situation. they are one of four teams we need to outpoint in order to get to the promised land. and yet we are here to do them a big fucking favor right before the season starts? it seems to me (and perhaps my americanness is showing here) that the smart strategy is to lead them on as close to the season as possible and then tell them to fuck off, leaving a rival with fewer options. sun tzu and all that. and while i get wanting to get rid of those what want getting rid, as it were, a strong start by us would probably bring mr. berbs around. a bad start and we sell him in january. it's just so weird to help out someone whom one should want to hurt. to me anyway. and modric arsh berbs lennon bentley jenas/hudd seems like a hell of a mid/front line to me. what do i know?

Couldn't agree more. It's aiding the enemy that defies belief. I remember watching some war movie and as the army pulled out of a town/village they blew the guts out of it. Rendered it useless to the 'on their heels' enemy.
What we will be doing is the equivilent of hoovering, making sure the central heating is on and leaving freshly baked bread on the kitchen table.
Mind you, maybe we have blown the guts out of Mitka. And when he goes he'll continue to mope, stare skyward, mope, not scoring.

Right on Mr. Bobby Green! I've been saying all along that we have to either screw them for proper cash or just screw their game plan. We can't be playing to their tune. For the most part, I don't think the big boys are. From earlier discussions, the board are being that much sneakier and street smart these days. No more are we going to get 'Carricked' - someone we didn't want to sell. Pointy - I have a feeling he was earmarked to be offed and £20m was too good to resist. I also believe he's not going to be as inspirational for the Pool as everyone makes out. Talk about hype.
Berba on the other hand really wants to go. You know it, I know it, everyone does. The only bluff we have is whether or not we need to sell him for the cash. If you've been card counting, its clear that we've hardly spent a penny that hasn't been recouped on sales. So that means we should still have at least a £30m warchest even without proceeds from a Berba sale.
Those that have been dominating the league in recent years have been buying, and then benching alot of good players. Now had they been available to the other teams, this would have meant that there would be more competition for them, and for the status quo.
We need to rock this boat, we need to disrupt the shady practice, and break the myth of an established top4. From the arse kissing redtop hacks, to the wankstain agents, and the rotten whisky breathing rednose tosser who taps so much he's in danger of falling in the sink, we say Feck Reet Orf.
sorry. 'we' should say 'i'. i don't presume to act on behalf of anyone other than my various personalities. so it probably should say 'we'? I think I could be right there. good point.

Should be easy to flush him out again then. I hear he's got a buy-in clause. He'd suit us too, really up the ante. Give him a free roll and there's no limit to what we could achieve as long as he's not become a soft player and flops etc.....etc.....

Looking at the other side of it.
We have to be realistic and I'm trying to be here. We are looking better now than we have in many years. We are in a position to challenge Ar5ena1 & Liverpool for 3rd / 4th place with an honourable mention to one or two other, albeit more distant contenders, Villa & Pompey. United & the blue scum are in a league of two.
If (when) Berba goes to United, I want him to succeed. I want him to score goals against those teams who challenging us for the Chapmions League places. I want United to beat those teams, that only helps us.
I want Keane to fail as he is playing for one of the teams challenging us.
I may be wrong in my assessment of the teams who I desperately hope we will be challenging, but I dont think I will be far wrong.
Am I wrong in wanting Berba to score goals for United?

All agreed in totality etc, everything been agreed, just meds, permit enquiries, one outgoing transfer to solidify the other two out of three kinda thing.(Jasper)
Don't shoot me if doesn't happen. There is a very strong air of confidence that deal will be finalised tonight, with Arshavin expected down aiming for Friday. I will hasten to add, plain outrageous, and something else always happens. I heard this from an associated source. 20-23 year old striker from (S America, Italy, Spain), 2 out of three. We are awaiting cleared advice from home office on a permit enquiry on striker.

Sorry Spur, but I don't regard 'Jasper' as remotely 'ITK' whatsoever. He has somehow pulled the wool over Mr Smith's eyes (must have been really difficult) on Odious and to date has said nothing that has either actually transpired or indeed that wasn't so vague as to be possible just by sheer chance. It is no coincidence he has chosen a 'private members board' from which to launch his guesswork. He'd be laughed out of town anywhere else.
This, by contrast comes from the real world....
"And what can yousay about the future of Andrei Arshavin?"

I wish Berba could have been transferred to Barca. Or, preferably, to somewhere in Khazakstan. Or anywhere he wouldn't be a direct antagonist of Spurs. Berba himself supposedly prefers a move to Catalunya. If that's the case, we would surely deliver him on a silver platter, if the money were right (and on the understanding that the silver platter be returned to us).
But Barca don't want him. Or they wanted him and couldn't afford him. I think they don't want him. And if Barca believe they can do ok without this particular top-class striker - a man who posseses such prodigious talent that he plays football for kicks (I'd kick you, Berba) - then I'm confident that Spurs can do ok without him, too.
Granted, Barca and Spurs are in different countries and competitions. In time, however, we might find ourselves pitted aginst each other (when our Champs League aspirations are realised). And then we'd face the same problem. But, before that time, at least we would have stopped Berba from preventing us getting there. So, yes, it sucks that he'll potentially continue to dog us.
But we aren't Tesco. We can't buy up players (like Tesco buys land) to set aside (effectively making redundant) just to prevent our competitors getting them. We can't disarm the enemy by buying all the armaments. We don't have the money; and we're a PLC.
It occurs, too, that, having recruited Dos Santos from Barca, I don't imagine Ramos would risk sabotaging (by mendaciously persuading Barca that Berba would be a team-playing asset, and that they ought to acquire him) what may become a fruitful relationship (between Barca and Spurs), that sees the Catalan club provide us, de temps en temps, with wonderkids.
I draw comfort knowing that gout has been rife at Spurs during the pre-season, and that it is possible - just possible - that, while other Spurs players recover, Berba may have caught it - from someone else's sock, or a toilet-seat - and become debilitated over the forthcoming weeks.
HH, I can't log onto your mini league me ol china! I've created my team and everything - feel like i've been left stranded with a bit of a throb on!

Perhaps the truth is that Berba was finally able to take the pebble from Master Kan's hand. Then, both he and Master Kan knew, it was time for him to go.
Just a (probably wildly optimistic) thought. Have the papers/websites have gone awfully quiet about David Villa?

In truth, once we're a few games into the season, I don't think we'll miss him much. Our midfield can more than make up for his twinkletoed link play and I'm prepared to bet that his 15 league goals in a season tally can be bettered by Bent and possibly matched by one or two midfielders.
That said, my stomach churns at the thought of last season's unbeaten build-up and first match defeat. I don't just want us to beat middlesberg, I want us to destroy them, to toy with them, to make them look less than ordinary. I want the memory of last season's opener to be buried under a concrete bridge support and send a ripple of apprehension through the division.
I don't want much, I want what's been coming for far too long.

No worries. It was kinda correct anyway. And I despise Manure, too. It's all cool.
Yes, trepidations for the first game, on account of that mare last time round. But we now have a new bunch of players and - maybe more importantly - a new mentality. Not just new bodies have been brought in, but new minds.
No precedents apply. The slate is clean.

'So, what's the plan for Saturday, then, boss? How do we beat Spurs?'
'I'm working on it, Emanuel. Not sure. Time was all you had to do was turn up. Times have changed. I've got Stewart on double punting-duty with his sweet left foot.'
'It's not gonna be enough, boss.'
'I know, I know. If only they didn't have so many talented players. Especially that moody yet brilliant, squirrel-fetishist bastard.'
'Who, the Bulgarian?'
'That's the one.'
'Boss, I've been reading the papers!'
'You didn't tell me you could read. We should re-negotiate your contract.'
'Sure, boss. But the papers... They say the sulky fcuker's off to Man Yoo.'
'Brilliant. Tell Stewie to stop punting with his sweet left foot. I have a plan. Get everyone inside. I'll break the news.'
'What news, boss?'
'With the Bulgarian gone, the plan is - there IS no plan! We just capitalise on him being gone!'
'Fantastic, boss!'
'But keep reading the papers, Emanuel. I want up-to-date reports on stubbed toes, thigh-strains, stomach-bugs. Anything from the enemy camp we can use against them.'
'Will do, boss. But, boss - the papers: what does 'relegation' mean? And 'sack-race'?
'Ha! Losing their talisman must've really spooked them!'
'Err, no, boss. They're talking about us.'
Fatfish - if a an ex spurs player that has shown up with good performances for the club, and unfortunately had to leave to a lesser club, albeit kicking and screaming "Nooooo. I don't want to go. I love it here...." a la Teemu, or Steed. Then I wish them well and hope that they do score one or two memorable goals (goals of the season contenders even) not against us of course but anyone else. The likelihood of them competing for the top 3 spots is small to impossible.
However, wishing Berba to score lots of goals for Manure is, in my humble opinion, ridiculous. What we should be wanting is any/all of our opponents finding it difficult to score, but us scoring like a virgin in a brothel with a BOGOF promotion. At the end, it may all depend on goal difference and we should aim to twat everyone in sight, a massacre of the highest proportions. Annihilation. And then for General Ramos just to say, 'de nada, that was just ok' like its obvious there's more to come. Goals are the currency in this game that turns an honest man into a King, and a 'Sir' into a pauper.
9_37. I keep forgetting it is a PLC and that unlike Chelscum which is the bastard child of russian blood money, that we have to operate as a company that delivers profits to our shareholders. In which case selling Berba for the right money is the best thing to do. Could he be worth more in 6 months/ 1 years time? Probably not seeing as he's got 3 years of prime left in him. So with my head, I concede defeat and dehands (down).

He was terrible and Liege really deserved to win that one!
The thing is, teams will have watched that game last night and they'll know how to stop liverpool from playing their game & I expect a team like Sunderland to go out and play exactly the same against the scousers on August 16th.
Liege had no big stars but were full of youthful tenacity and exuberance. The battled hard and closed Pool down and hit them early on the break. Thats how you beat Pool guys!
OH..... and Robbie.... was the Champions League what you thought it would be???? Thought not!!
I don't think that's the case. I think the hold up is the fact we dont have a replacement. Once that is sorted, he'll go, and good riddance. Give me a team of David Bentley's anyday, guy actually wants to wear the shirt and knows what it means to us.

its not often it happens but I completely agree with you!
Good riddance when he leaves. Lets not get it wrong the guy is pure class and oozes genius but he's bad for morale!
We all dream of a team of a team of Dave Bentleys! a team of Dave Bentleys!
PLN & JS
Even me as the devoutest supporter of Berbs skills and prowess can only agree that he aint no good for us as a team player, but tell you what I would rather he went for gut busting cash to manure or not at all. As one of our bloggers stated earleir we still have cash to spend on a striker and maybe a CB so we arent having to sell to buy. And he is still an asset at Xmas even he is sulking in the reserves....get my point?
Arshavin would not replace Keane. There isnt a replacement for Keane needed. But we do need a replacement for Berba. We need a back up to Bent or even better a challenger for his place. If Arshavin realy does arrive i will be very happy. We will have so many options in midfield so we wont have to worry if one or two players get injured in that department.
We'd all love to screw as much cash as possible out of Manure, but I think it could be a perilous game Levy is playing here.
None of us know the exact details of what has been offered, but if it's anywhere near the £30M that's been reported, I'd take it, get the replacements in and move on.
The danger of dragging this out too long could see Rudolph looking elsewhere, leaving us with a no where near committed striker who's value will diminish by the month and £30m ish short to reinvest.

Agree that he is an asset, but only when he wants to be. Who's to say if we dont sell him this window, he refuses to play for Ramos, starts infecting team morale and come January we'll only offload him for £18m??
I know we have money to spend but, at this moment in time we hold the aces in this transfer. WE have the player signed to a contract, WE dont need to sell & WE have the FA sniffing round Utd in a tapping up claim! Fergie NEEDS a striker, Fergie WANTS our striker & Fergie NEEDS to buy.
We are dictating this transfer and I think Levy is too shrewd to not take advantage of this one.
TMWNN
I think Levy is the king of brinkmanship and like i just said utd need Berba alot more than we think they do. Fergie has been after the guy for years and now they need a striker he's the player Fergie wants.
Levy will take full advantage of this one dont worry. Has he let us down yet??
I hope so JS, I'm just sick of the whole thing. If we keep him, it will just mean more of the same shit until the next window.
I believe we are in the driving seat in terms of our bargaining positioin with utd. They are in dire need of a top cf as they look surprisingly impotent,Berbatov HAS to accept that we won't budge on our valuation so if it isn't met he will be a spurs player. The proposed 'gentlemans agreement' scenario took place under jol's regime,Juande is a very shrewd and intelligent man he won't f*ck about with that sort of dialogue.Have faith we won't sell without a quality replacement signed.

I feel completely the same. I made my peace with him leaving after his first season and I was highly surprised he stayed! Now i just want rid of him. In fairness to Berba he's never come out and asked to leave or kicked up a storm in the papers but its the whole saga that has dragged on since he started playing well for us. "even if the new goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has a minor shocker it will be an improvement on last season's Paul Robinson/Radek Cerny show, although for £7.8m Spurs will expect a genuinely safe pair of hands."
"He has experience of gatecrashing an apparently exclusive club, when he almost led Sevilla to the title in Spain, and he has skilfully built not only for the present but also the future, & has a possible starting line up with an average age of 23"

Only one thing I disagree with. If King and Woodgate remain fit, they are easily better than all other English defenders including Rio Ferdinand.

Fair do's to Sir Tony of Gardner.
He never professed to being the best player on the park, never complained at being a squad player and to his merit seemed to be a nice bloke. OH... and he scored a "screamer" against Wet Spam!
Good luck Tony! Thankyou for the heartstopping, nail-biting, disaster courting situations you put yourself and every Spurs fan through!

I remember hearin from someone once that Gardners proposed move to Charlton a few years back was scrapped due to a medical that Tony did his best to fail. He loved bein at the club that much, prepared to take his 3/4 games a season and work his socks off (albeit to no avail more often than not) and yes that goal against the spammers will live long in the memory!
Robbie Williams at the Lodge. Defensive midfielder? Very hush-hush. Can't say more at this stage.
My contacts tell me (informants, that is, not lenses) that Ledley had a cup of coffee this morning. Make of that what you will.

Does anyone else think Sparky's 'bid' for Santa Cruz is a bit iffy? I mean, what better way to suggest to the fans and interested parties in general that everything is tickety-boo, than bid a few millions for a credible player?
I think this may be more a public relations strategy than a serious initiative to get the player. Either way, Roque would be dicing with danger, were he to go.
Come on, Spurs. Sign someone. Anyone.
I always used to enjoy his closing report to Orson...
Maybe we could get him to take it in turns with Gus with the post match interview.
See the squad that played in our behind closed doors friendly with that arab lot? No Tomas Pekhart to be seen....does that suggest he will be around teeside come the weekend?

Not only is Man Sh1tty's situation dire, it's in short supply.
I'm reminded of the joke about the two Jewish women eating in a restaurant. One looks up from her meal and says, 'You know, the food here is terrible.'
And the other says, 'I know - and such small portions.'
Two Jews walking down the street. one spies a wage packet on the ground. He picks it up examines it and starts tutting and shaking his head.
"Empty?"
"No, all there."
"So problem?"
"Meh.Look at the deductions."
Feels like a calm before the storm right now...any news on veloso? I don't trust this corluka deal to happen and therefore we must be after some more defensive back up...any whispers?... I hope arshavin is seeled soon I'm getting frustrated by it oh and berba can go, moral is high and he just dampens it all - he doesn't want to play for us so we shouldn't give him the honour any longer. sell him for a few bob though...
£2.5m for Bambi! Get in, I thought he'd be on loan get injured and then sent back!
Change of subject a bit but have you seen this interview with Steve McClaren for Dutch tv?
Hilarious! What a knober

Also, brilliant deall for tony, well done spurs. I feel like we are the business kings of the league these days. All legitimate and fantastically shrewd...
Farewell, Anthony Gardner. I liked that lad. As Ledley's star waxed, his waned. Now Ledley's star may be waning, too, but that wax will come in useful for Smoothbum.
I guess, in ultimately failing to make himself indispensible to Spurs, Gardner must have taken Homer Simpson's advice to heart: 'Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try.'
Lawro's prediction....!
Middlesbrough v Tottenham
Gareth Southgate has done a good job at Middlesbrough. He has been well backed by his chairman Steve Gibson and I think Afonso Alves, whom he signed in January, has got a real chance of scoring goals in the Premier League.
He has got Tuncay and Mido, and brought in the promising young Marvin Emnes from Holland in the summer, so he has covered the goals he lost when Yakubu and Mark Viduka left.
Spurs have lost Robbie Keane and look certain to lose Dimitar Berbatov, and while Darren Bent has had a brilliant pre-season, it's a bit different in the Premier League and I think Boro will nick this against a visiting side who will be bedding in new players of their own such as Luka Modric and David Bentley.
Behave yourself Lawro!
Prove that slug balancing tw@t wrong Benty, go on son!!!

Oh dear for citeh!
Well lets see.... £16m is owed. Spurs have offered around £9m for Corluka. By doing some simple maths, I calculate that IF Citeh sell us Vedran Corluka they will only owe £7m to their debtors.
Manchester Citeh you do the maths!! The Corluka deal seems to be playing into our hands, by the looks of it you're right, the Santa Cruz bid does seem to be nothing more than a PR exercise to reassure the Citeh faithful.
Fortunately for Spurs and Mr Corluka, in this game, money talks and we seem to have plenty of it. I expect to see Mr Corluka any day now.

The symbolic gold star (What's all that about?) above the citeh badge is going for 60p -- every penny counts in these situations.
I can't believe Gardner has become Hull's record signing!!! Talk about the have's and have not's. We should think ourselves lucky, they are in the same Division as us!

Ever see Supermarket Sweep?? Well.... I'm pretty sure that all of Dales Super Special Bargains used to have a gold star on them!

Don't know who he is but I like Ron Mael's tache. It looks like its perilously dangling on the edge of his top lip, defying gravity and amazing one and all with its slenderness.
I think i thought too much about that one!
It goes nicely with his glasses!
Lawro's has got to be the best tho and without it I feel he has lost his magical prediction powers, for surely he is wrong when he predicts we will lose......Toss Pot!

Cant view youtube on my works network! I will have to check later.
Just noticed that Bostock seems to be playing in the reserves and academy squads. I wonder if he'll get a look in with the senior squad on CC matches and early FA cup rounds. I think he's a definite talent and would love to see what he could do within our 1st xi midfield.

Harry, you amaze me - such prose.
He'll be missed and I'm not convince that Arsh is an / the answer. I think we need someone more robust or we could look like Ardilles 11 mark2.
ITK Ben says no deal done yet but hopefully tonight.
