Smoothbum To Sign In Days

So you wanna buy striker or no buy?

The war of attrition has, as we speak, been won. Quite who by remains to be seen.

The deal between Zenit St Petersburg and THFC has reached some class of conclusion and the player heralded as Pointy Shouty Bloke's replacement is on his way to The Lane.

Zenit were adamant that he was worth €25 million and Spurs were convinced he wasn't. Quite where they met is anyones's guess. My hope is it was nearer what the man with a first from Cambridge had in mind originally, rather than the thought of either Benty or Johnny Two Saints getting injured forcing his hand to a fuller figure.

This deal may yet collapse. For reasons well documented before this piece. The devil has been in the detail and if ever there was a precedent set for transfer tomfoolery then it was this one.

I have to admit a slight sense of sowhatness about this transfer. Don't get me wrong, he may well still cause the havoc required but as an effective replacement for both Bob & Berba it is, to quote that hairless Hogmanay Herbert off Sky Sports, 'a big ask.'

There's no doubt that Tottenham suddenly have a real array of creativity across the park. Suddenly so many proven providers. The doom mongering Bulgarian's form dipped and he looked for someone to blame. As per his insular wants I am convinced he looked to himself first and longest. (The pondering artiste in him would have curiously enjoyed that.) And then didn't have to look much farther. The squad of last season was full of people who didn't quite service him. Didn't quite do him justice.

Apart from Bob, of course.

And if if there was ever a key to this three lock box then the departure of that prize fight knacker was it. Keane's agenda was straightforward as that of a suicide bomber. And as a result, equally impossible to guard against. Bob acted alone, focused and probably motivated by little more than a desire to die for something... money, fame or the conclusion of a row he had with someone who dared to substitute him.

Keane going made things much much easier for the troubled Mitka. The springboard for all his own indulgencies, flights of fantasy, call them what you will was handed to him. Bob's bunk to Barryland is the justification he can use to cloak his own naked ambition.

The irony will not be lost on Berbatov that now Wendy has rearranged the entire team to accommodate both coherant defending and attacking... the tortured artist is doing the off.

But now he won't want to dwell on that too much. Afterall, the boy has much dwelling to do and little time in which to do it. As his team mates were shrieking and making merry after the Carling Cup win, Berbatov's interpretation of a random urine test in an antichamber at Wembley was that this somehow emphasised his isolation. Not for him the simple joys that the other labourers enjoyed. His destiny was detachment.

You or I would have served them their glass of widdle as fast as and got back to the party. Our hero was soul searching.

Quite how this fuzz of melancholia will cope with Shrek bawling 'Get yer fooking foot round the c*nting thing yer fooking half dead c*nt yer' is anyone's guess.

Berbatov is in for one hell of a culture shock. His moping won't be tolerated in the 'can do culture' of Old Trafford where he will be expected by his colleagues and a capacity crowd to excell immeadiately and consistently if he is to survive.

The consequences?

The old alice band won't have much to do if he goes from Squirrel Nutkins to Terry Nutkin.

David Bentley was spotted in Ikea Croydon buying a 50p hotdog and told an onlooker he is due to sign for Tottenham this Friday.

DON'T FORGET YOUR FANTASY FOOTBALL ENTRY!

Harry, you amaze me - such prose.
He'll be missed and I'm not convince that Arsh is an / the answer. I think we need someone more robust or we could look like Ardilles 11 mark2.

Im not so sure Arshavin is the right answer to the squad at the moment. We could currently chalenge Cheski in a who´s got the most midfielders´top trump type competition.
We need a point Man. Bent is looking at getting there, but remains to be shown in the league. Proof is in the Pudding as they say.
To be honest I couldnt see Bob the Knob fitting into this new formation. And with Wantaway mitka, its looking more like clever business. Hopefully we get that cut throat centre forward before Friday. Arshavin should not be the last man in.

Great news on 'smoothbum' HH. Really think that lad will do well in the premiership. So are you saying that the Berba off to Manure is correct then? This story originated from the Daily Mail and whereas they write a story moving every possible to every possible team, all the tabloids seem to have picked up on this one. If true it just shows the Henry bid was as we all thought another transparent Fergie mind game to unsettle Vlad Tepes from our rank.
Do you have word from the inside regarding berba's departure then HH?
(great read as always - thanks!)

Well if he signs that is good. Another threat is what's needed.

My concern is not so much Corluka (will he won't he) but Veloso. He plays in the position where we have been weak for so long and if he was to sit in front of the back 3 (or 4) we would be strong at the back, craetive in the middle and moderate up front. Any news?

Arshavin and Gio for second striker role or left midfield but we need another Centre Forward as cover for Bent!

And we still need a CDM and CB!

I want to post something constructive, or at least titillating. But the hijinx and shenanigans various this transfer window have left me feeling drained and apathetic, where I should otherwise be delighted and optimistic at the impending arrival of Arshavin. I might get a rise out of Veloso though, but I doubt that will happen given the controversial grooming of that Jenas fellow.

I return to my corner to voyeuristically skulk at this board, gorging myself every once in a while on the prose of HH and 23 to 10.

It might be my hormones are playing up. I miss Jose Dominguez. I wonder what he's up to these days.

He signed for FC Kaiserslautern in 1999 for £250,000, before playing his final seasons in the Qatari league. He is the shortest player to have ever played in the Premier League. 'Arshavin to stay at St Pete
Premier league champions Zenit Saint Petersburg claim their star man Andrey Arshavin will stay at the club until the end of his contract.

In a statement posted on the club's website, Zenit say they had set a deadline of july 15th for any potential move for Arshavin.

They added that they haven't received any "satisfactory offers" for the forward.

It means Russia’s Euro-2008 hero will stay and make his Champions League debut with Zenit in September.

Earlier this month, the Saint Petersburg club rejected a $US 24 million bid for Arshavin from Spanish super-club Barcelona'.

Also Zenit crashed out of Cup to lower devision club 1-0 so how good is he?

GOOD LUCK TO THE BOYS FOR SAURDAY

Berbatov off - Yes please! He will hold our new look young attacking team back with his slow hold up play and moods. He's world class, but not what we need now. A committed Berbatov yes, but not the sort we seen most of last year. Minus his goals against Reading (6 was it in all) his scoring return was average... poor actually. He will not be dearly missed.
I'd love us to Sign Corluka, Veloso and Arshavin this week, but even stil we'd need another striker I think. Maybe if Blackburn land Zigic Santa Cruz will be available??? I'd have him.

Assuming Berba is off (and i too will believe it when i see it), then we need a top class striker..

Arshavin is not the answer.. i'd be quite happy for him to come in but we still need a striker..

the thought of relying on Darren Bent for the whole season has me waking up in cold sweats..

I'd be slightly sceptical about signing Arsh but i'd still like to bring him in and who knows we might be on to a winner.. same goes for Bent i guess..

the way our squad is shaping up we really ought to be hammering Boro at the weekend..

I know its only been pre season Bimi but i think Bent has shown how confident he is in front of goal. He looks far deadlier than Keane ever did in front of goal and he's twice as fast as Berba. He suits the lone striker role to perfection!

I too think AA could be a risk and whilst he's adequate replacement for Keane he's no lone wolf, but agree if he comes we could be onto a winner. Lets just hope as HH said that his valuation is closer to the one that Mr Levy envisaged IMO anything over £16m sees us being ripped off.

I think with Berba seeming to be leaving that we will need to sign a striker. Who it will be I do not know. The list in reality is quite short due to player fees and availablilty. Huntelaar IMO would be a good signing but he'll cost us £18m!

Combined fee for AA and Huntelaar could be around £35m (AA £17m & KJH £18m) not a bad reinvestement of Berba's fee!

The last time we got to transfer deadline day without a striker on board, we went out and bought Rasiak!

The good news is that Spurs now act as they have a specific list of targets and act with military precision to get our men. While Levy was bringing in Modric, Gomes, Gio & Bentley, and shipping out those who are surplus or wanted pastures new, our rivals appeared to be just hanging around waiting to see what names the agents come up with. Moyes and O'Neill have been complaining all summer that they need more faces, and have finally responded by buying journeymen a couple of weeks before the season starts.

If we fail to bring in a proper replacement for Berba, I will never lay the blame at the door of the man with the Cambridge First.

I remember Teddy going off against The Barcodes a few years back and all we had to bring on was Gary Docherty (they nicked it at the end too....effing JJ!!). That was just after the window had closed and Goddle had failed to get in cover (to be fair he WAS after Michael Ricketts).

The moral of this tale is that if Berba goes, cover must be found if we are to prosper. JR clearly doesn't trust Pekhart quite enouh just yet

For those of you who are put out by us selling our star strikers, please be reassured by the huge wedge we are getting back in return.

I recall the time when the Woolwich Arsenal started to pull ahead of us, and become one of the "top 4" while we floundered in mediocrity.

An investigation by Metropolitan Police identified two causes of the grwoing disparity:

1. At the time when we really needed to start buying some top class international players, the Woolwich bought Bergkamp, a move which Sir Alan said would bankrupt them, while I seem to recall we bought Chris Armstrong.

2. As it started to become apparent that we were falling behind and needed to catch up quick, we discovered that our exisiting players were worth bugger all. While our mate Arse was selling Le Grand Sulk for a profit of 22 million, we couldn't get 2 bob for any of our lot. Therefore, our transfer budget was always restricted to new cash while those other folks were able to add their profits to their budget.

I now celebrate the fact that we can sell players and get large amounts of wedge in as I can remember the time when we couldn't give away our players. It shows that Levy is getting it right by signing these players in the first place.

I know many of us will remember Freddie as the poor mans henry but you have to admit since moving to spain and playing under Juande Ramos, Kanoute seems to have improved vastly, to top it all off, he's used to playing in the lone striker role for Sevilla and was hugely successful playin under Ramos' system in both La Liga and the UEFA cup aswell as having past premier league experience

Quite how we'll convince Sevilla and Mr Del Nido to part with Freddie is whole other story.

I have to admit i completely forgot about him as an option but one that I think would work.

I for one would love to sign Arshavin, i dont think anyone else would be a bigger statement. Everything about it excites me from the value, the negotiations, the fact that it would soften the blow of Berba leaving and make him feel a bit less self important, the fact that its a massive gamble.

Its like your long term bird leaving you on the thursday and by friday night youre jumping into bed with an underwear model!

Ive got absolutely no idea if he'll turn out to be any good but what i do think that hes worth the gamble. Exactly the same question marks were raised when we signed Berba from Leverkusen, im no student of the European game but id certainly never heard of him, and like JGM, what little ive seen of AA would make me have him over Keane.

Also, i believe the fee is largely irrelavent, let the main men deal with that, im sure they wont spend what we cant afford. i also believe that the figures quoted are more often than not inclusive of wages and fees etc - not just the transfer fee. So its likely that any publicised fee is inflated anyway.

If he is deported theres no doubt he'll be convicted of the charges against him and no doubt that he'll fail the fit and proper person test that the FA are due to carry out on him. This will leave Man Citeh without an owner and leave Thaksin without the reported £800m he has to fund the citeh revolution. I think that Hughes will have to sell players to make sure the wages are paid until a new owner comes in.

Its sad for football and the FA should be shot for allowing people like thaksin to buy football clubs. HOWEVER.... It will mean 6 points for us and hopefully a few choice picks from their squad!

Personally, I take encouragement from it, especially bearing in mind his reported eagerness to test himself in the English game. The guy is up for it, which is more than we can say of Berbatov. Add that to his abundant skills and intelligence, and we have a player.

Remember what he said about Spurs being the only club who had dared to continue negotiations? There's something old-school about that. It tells of a man who appreciates being valued, respects bravery and determination, and who will return those qualities in equal measure.

Maybe I'm being romantic. But I love Spurs, and romance is in my blood.

You say Romance is dead? Then I say, Long live Romance.

According to many bio's and descriptions of Andriy, by all accounts he is a simple man. He does his job like a model professional. He shuns the limelight, so much so that you can see him squint at the merest hint of a camera. He is married and settled with kids, and is more likely after a match, to go home to the family, to curl up in bed with a cup of Horlicks (so much better for than Nourishment for the wind factor) and write his next book, than be dragged out of a side door of Faeces nightclub to be snapped by a daily rag with his trousers droopily flashing his grey undergarments.

It could be just what we need. A level head, still bursting with an ambition to achieve things (cups, championships, perhaps another degree?) which will help settle the side.

I think he could give Mills and Boon a run for their money when he arrives, such is the potential level of romance in the chapter that he can write with Tottenham Hotspur.

I hope Levy has done the ruskies out of some wedge! we all know what a double hard bastard of a negotiator he is and it really wouldnt surprise me if Levy gets him for the right price. Just read on TPC that AA will be followed into the club by another striker and a CB. Apparently Ramos has persuaded Levy and Comolli to back in for Kanoute and I assume the CB will be Corluka

As for Baler. Why not until 2013? What's so special about 2012? Are we worried he might hurt himself at the Olympics playing for the GB team? ;) The boys that good - sign him for life!

AA will love it here: the pitches, the crowds, the training, the discipline, the work ethic. Not to mention the goals he'll score against the so-called 'top four'. Yes, creative visualisation.... I can see the top four disintegrating... I can see us top one. We create our own reality (with a little help from ENIC's millions).

Despite inevitable settling in and gelling hiccups, all these new players are superior grade. Weigh that against initial anxieties and you still have a team that is fitter, faster, more creative and dynamic, and more qualitative.

And minus the albatros.

I think you're being a bit harsh on Bent. Theres no doubt in my mind the guy deserves a run in the side. I believed all along that it was the system and not the player that hindered his progress last year. And as I've said before he's put the graft in over the summer, not let the doubters get to him and he's got his head down and concentrated on doing what he does best. Who can argue with how he has taken his goals in pre-season? Left foot, right foot, headers, he's done the lot. His first against Roma, the goal against Dotrmund and the goal against Celtic, all finishes of a supremely confident striker. With him as our main man and a return for Freddie I'm sure we wont be missing Berba or Keane at all.

Just seen the pictures of the lads training. two things stuck out! 1) How good did Berba look? Pirouetting in mid air, clearly sending Luka the wrong way (i will miss bits like that) 2) Gunter is a big boy no? never noticed his height or how broad he is, surely a quality CB in a years time??

Cheddar - the bias will turn around. The redtop hacks will soon swap sides once the Spurs bandwagon gets rolling in force, and we might start to get even billing at last. Although I expect when we're 10 points ahead of the Ar5e come March, Charlie Nicholas and the like will still say they'll make up the points.

Just goes to perpetuate my theory that SKY are biased towards the top four! I wonder on what Basis Nicholas can say that Arsenal, despite being even weaker than last year can win the title? Man Utd (if they sign Berba) Chelsea (Big Phil in charge) & Spurs (strengthened more than anyone) Even Liverpool to an extent have far better squads than the scummers.

I'm sure they will all but match, but I put this down to the fact that The Great Bear isn't exactly famous for ethnic integration on mass.

If what you say is true, this is reminiscent of a Le Pen interview in 98 or 00. When asked what he thought of the French National Squad, he replied: "It's good, except there are too many blacks in it." And then there was a moments silence. Like when somebody dies.

Nunchucks, in my mind I can still feel under my hands the sand that ran the length of that log's interior; and hear my plimsolled feet echoing as I scampered from one opening to the other.

Oh, yes. I used to scamper long, long before Lennon, the scamp, scamped.

I like the romanticism of your descriptive prose. Nay, poetry. It's like, I'm there already.

"Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has again insisted Vedran Corluka and Stephen Ireland will not be leaving the club, and that he remains in the market for new players."

Expect Corluka to be with us any day now then, swiftly follwed out the Eastlands exit door by a very angry, bemused Mark Hughes screming "what have i done!!"

Word on the grapevine from my mate Marvin:
Levy is apparently under the stadium, escape to victory style, to whip Andrex Softest-bum-in-Russia Arshavin, out at half time.

If Arshavin is playing for Zenit, then that's because he must still be an employee. Fair enough. Just because he might be leaving they wouldn't tell him, 'Ok, son, take it easy. Put your feet up.'

Personally, I won't believe he's signed till I see his wife in one of Harry's chain of nail extension bars or internet cafes.

It was the former, or so he claimed, but I am sure it still depresses him.

Or the latter...the damage has been done. He'd have better off with that log than his wife Diedre, who makes a bag of spanners look like a bottox patient.

I pity the poor fcuker looking through the other side of the knot.

I recall... large knots; and small knots; and knots you could barely squeeze your finger in.

Let us not forget that a log also lost it's virginity that day. We do not know if it was consensual.

Whoa Jamie, lets try and not p*ss orf the rainbow brigade now as well ;) 8O :D

I wonder what Mnsr Le Pen's up to these days? Possibly flogging off the Russian version of the Cross of St. George on his website?

Anyway, is there something you can take for getting your hopes up and then dashed several times a day? First berbas off, then he isn't. Then Andriy's supposed to be checking out Chingford and then he only appears at work!

Last time I get the future read by someone that 'reads' potnoodles.

There's some brief footage from today's training on the normally worthless SpursTVonline. About halfway through, Berba bundles in a goal after great work from Modric (a one-two with Bent in the build-up). King clearly taking part, too.
If this is the club telling the Mail and Fergie to shove it, then it's pretty subtle. On the other hand ...
