Some Tip Top Transfer Tattle To Keep You Going...

Wednesday, 07 January 09, 12:12 PM · Comments (282)

VT suppled by Terry ...Thank you!

Two pieces of information from The Lane, neither of which will lead to standby bottles of vintage slurp being interferred with, but certainly worth sharing.

Chimbonda. His agent makes Paris Hilton look discreet, but nevertheless, his client's name is absolutely in the frame.

Hold tight on the upper deck, next stop Finsbury Park, see the lion tamers....

Kenwyn Jones. I kid thee not, dear reader...

The possibility of a man who can actually cope with the long balls from hell is on the cards.

Money? No and object are two words to be avoided as both deals would be perceived as flattering to the players despite our current league standing. The word of the day is Renaisance and the the enquiries are all being augmented by a man some call the boy Levy.

Man, these names are hardly whetting my appetite! We should be going for world beaters, not shitty UK based average players! So this window we could sign Defoe, Downing, Chimbonda and Jones!! 2 of them we owned up until a season ago and are average at best, whilst the other 2 are just shit!!! Is Appiah (fingers crossed) going to be our only 'world beater'? I know we have poor squad depth but we deserve better than these average players!

No thanks for chimbonda, would rather eat a kidney stone. From what I've seen Gunter seems like a tidy little unit, he needs more games if he's going to take the right back slot in a few years down the line.

I like Jones, but if we get him Bent we be off come summer no doubt, he made it clear last year that sitting on the bench was not enough for him, so I can't see why he'd feel any different.

I WANT GIO TO PLAY! Last night was a great opportunity to get him on the pitch, I fear if Harry lets him slip to another team we've missed out on a superstar. Let's not forget he joined us with the premise that he would be in the team every week. He's probably wondering why he left Barca...

ah James Bonda.. i always rated him... we didn't really need to sell him but wasn't too sad to see him go.. if he comes back... so be it.. but Hutton and Charlie are way better..

Saw Kenwyn Jones last year at one of my all too infrequent visits to the Lane for the Sunderland match..
he seems to be an absolute monster of a man.. an i remember getting very worried every time the ball went towards him..

but no thanks..

next..

...also, I presume everyone who is excited about Appiah has actually seen him play before? Let's hope we're not all just jumping on the bandwagon because someone else said he's "world class". I'd never heard of him prior to our links with him from newsnow in the past few months.

Chimbonda can do a job till Hutton is fit and free up Corluka for CB or DM. I wonder if we'll ever see Hutton back in a Spurs shirt - apart from being injury prone (and unimpressive when he played this season, although perhaps not fit) Hutton didnt really want to come in the first place. If we are looking for someone to give defenders a hard tim/physical battle and hold up/knock down the ball for Defoe or Pav Jones can probably do that as well as most - there's certainly more future/mileage in Jones than Heskey and its not as if Heskey's prolific. We are looking at solid players who will do a job, they dont set the pulde racing but silky skilled superstars arent going to join two points off relegation.

Chimdonda can do a stand up job anywhere across the back four. He also played very well for us and looks uninterested in staying up North after the end of this season. I say he is worth a loan at least until the end of the season.

Jones? Well looking at his stats (19 goals in 71 apps for Soton and 11 goals in 44 apps for Sunderland) he must bring something to the table other than a high goals:games ratio. Potential perhaps?

IIRC a few seasons ago they no longer placed the Carling Cup runners up in Europe if the winners Qualify for Europe via the League. The precenet for this would be Wigan back in 2005-06, when they lost out to man United in the final.

I'm a little worried that Appiah's knee injury may be more of a problem than we would like. I saw on Fox sports that after his injury and subsequent fall out with the Turks, he was going to go to the MLS. He was a prospect for both DC United and the LA Galaxy.

I live in the states, I've seen a few MLS games. I have it in my head that the MLS is where has-been greats go to die. Maybe one or two exceptions. Any thoughts?

Jones and Appiah are exactly the sort of players that will add a bit of muscle to our lightweight squad.

However both have had bad injury problems.

I also saw Jones play against us and he was fucking scary.

The Appiah I remember from years ago was a big old brute in the Essien mold.

Sign them both double our chances of getting one that still works.

BUT chimbonda???? fuck. right . oofff.

The ITK are all fuckwits anyway, just pass on what they read in the Sun as their own 'inside' info. Probably a less than 5% correct prediction rate.

For the record priority now MUST be a left footed attacking midfielder as Harry (Redknapp, not Hotspur) will be playing two up front from now on. O' Hara didn't make the difference last night, the balance to the side did and with all due respect to young Jamie, he's only making the side as he's the only player we have in the squad who can give that balance apart from Bale, who's confidence seems to have deserted him. Bale (like Bentley) got some serious abuse last night from some so called fans... wasn't sure if I was in the right end!
Hope GDS gets a run out as I think he would be a great outlet on the left. Taraabt too... along with young Bostock we have some interesting talent to come to the fore.
Appiah is the mutts nuts by the way... an Essien style all rounder with a good eye for goal.

Appiah is being thoroughly checked out, you can count on it.

He's rubbished the story about going to the MLS....tho' maybe it was an option he considered when things were looking bleak after his treatment by Fenerbahce.

I live here, too. The MLS is finding it hard to build a reputation among fans eleswhere, but MLS teams get treated with respect when foreign teams come visiting pre-season. The USA has slipped in the international rankings but have been ranked higher then England in recent years....
But that's immaterial - thing is Appiah -if proven fit- would be a great acquisition for us even if only for the rest of the season.

Doubters can check him out on the web.

Live in the states as well. There may have been rumors of him going to MLS, especially since Beckham, every aging star or fallen star is "rumored" to go the MLS.

It is not like he went to the MLS and stunk (as Denilson did), and the Spurs are taking a look at him now. He's an unknown commodity.

Zero risk involved anyway.

It isn't like we are going to be able to a world class DM during this window anyway. And I don't see how we are banking on him for depth either, since Ohara and Corluka I think can play DM if Zokora is injured or goes into the tank.

I think buying players with a history of injury problems is obviously part of the master plan.

Let's be honest no other club has as much experience of dealing with injured players as us so they know they'll get the best medical care and their team mates can share injury advise and surgeons. This all helps them to settle in quickly and the obvious empathy with the other lads is great for team spirit.

And another thing

they're cheaper to buy.

I think that we “much tried” supporters need to get away from the idea that big names bring success.

If we can all keep the faith, stick together, build a solid unit and get behind the team rather than boo like a bunch of Asbo’s, we WILL get through this.

IF Arry can pull together a squad that has cohesion and can play for 90 minutes week in week out, then we have a good chance to push on and pick up the pieces of what is becoming a desperate season.

I don't need to "stat you up" because your whole point seems to be based on the fact that you probably once scored a half decent goal over the Marshes!! ;)

Whatever you choose to believe, he consistantly performed at Blackburn and for whatever reason, he just has not hit that form YET for us :\

Maybe he has started to believe his own ballshit, maybe he thought he would have the crownd behind him because he is a yid first and a Arse trainne 2nd..

But for what ever reason, I think he needs time and our Support (probably lost you there ;) )

But as you said, you are probably mustard premiership material, what do we know!...

"O'Hara didn't make the difference last night, the balance to the side did"

And how did the side become balanced? By bringing on Jamie O'Hara. How can you separate the two?

Or are you suggesting that any left-footed person would have balanced the side?

My uncle John, for instance. He's left-footed, 64 and smokes about that many a day. Oh, and he hates football. Would he have balanced the team?

It's like saying "it wasn't Mike Tyson that won the fight, it's just the other guy kept getting punched in the face."

Er, well yeah, one causes the other.

Jamie came on, got 1 goal, 2 assists, passed the ball well, doubled-up with his full back when needed, got stuck in and generally worked his Mansion.com sponsored socks off!

In fact, you might even go so far as saying he was Man of the Freakin' Match!!

Credit where it's due for Jamie pleeeeeease, thank you...

Agree with positive O'Hara comments, big fan of his. It's that desire to play your heart out for Spurs that really stands out with O'Hara (and for Defoe too). It's definitely about more than simply talent - having that desire is just what's needed to buck the rest of the team up, that positive psychological, gutsy be-winners attitude - not something Spurs are currently famed for at present, sadly.

Would love to see new signings have a similar attitude as well as decent feet and heads...

I was surprised how often I seemed to hear of Premier League players going to Germany for hernia operations. Obafemi Martins is the latest name mentioned. Michael Owen is a recent other.

So I thought, 'Hernia? Germany? Surely we have surgeons here in the UK who know how to respond when faced with malfunctioning groinage?'

So I wondered at the mysterious connection between abdominal muscle pathologies and the Fatherland. Was it cover for EU intelligence-gathering? Did it involve some football-orientated Masonic network, and a Germany-based Head Temple? Or was it a euphemismistic reference to gratuitous visits to a high-class, groin-focused 'House of Fun'?

It turns out there's a specialist in Germany called Dr. Ulrike Muschaweck who attends to this notorious sporting injury. 250,000 hernias occur each year in Germany, apparently (not all to footballers, mind you). It's nice to know that the groins of the world are in safe hands. For example, Martins should be back in action in about two weeks, probably right as rain.

Talking of action, Bale hasn't been the same since his foot injury. He returned early from that, only for the injury to recur and a further, longer period of recovery to ensue. Just like Hutton, really. And I can imagine that, just like Bale, Hutton won't quite be the same player he was, either, when he finally recovers.

Which got me thinking - foot or groin? Foot seems the simple answer. But I can't help feeling that, for Spurs, groin would have been preferable.

Evenin' all (well, morning now). Don't you just love our sensationalist tabloid hack, er, scumbags?

Given recent form I'm sure Harry will be tempted to start with O'Hara left and Lennon right on Sunday versus the Wiggers.

Especially with the early kickoff -- I can't see Bentley getting the barnet done in time.

So that looks like a fairly straightforward selection decision at this point, based on current form. But of course, according to the tabloids that will mean that Bentley has been AXED!! and that his Spurs career lay in TATTERS!!

Well, no... it just means he's currently in bad form but could easily still come good in the future. It's early days, surely?

Having said that, if Man City were to send down an enormous leather-look suitcase stuffed with necklaces, goblets and other assorted looty (say ÂŁ15m?) I wonder if Redders (er, that's Redknapp, don't know where Redders came from) would be tempted to take it and reinvest elsewhere?

Would be a poser, wouldn't it? Not unlike the man himself ;)

I couldn't help noticing from the cover of 'hotspur' that 'arry bears a passing resemblance to actor Ian McShane. LINK
You'll recall that McShane played a character called 'Lovejoy' (in the eponymous BBC series) who traded in antiques.

Lovejoy was a charming, opportunistic wheeler-dealer with an unerring eye for spotting the genuine, valuable article.

I trust this augurs well for our man's forays into the buying and selling market. But, with one or two chipped or crocked knees already at the club, I'm anxious to know there isn't at least some crackleglaze on Stephen Appiah's knee.

I'd really like to see this guy in a Spurs shirt.

Ha ha thanks, bronchial hyperreactivity. Apparently!

That's what you get for playing 5-a-side outside when it's -7 although the missus says it's what you get when you're 37 and playing in a league where everybody is 17-21.

Nearly feigned illness to stay home and watch the match, I know better next time.

I'd prefer Jones than Heskey I think. More and more Right Said (Fred) rumour, never seen the guys in action although hasn't had a great 18 months. I'm a big fan of Pav, I think he'll come good. I've been suprised with the turn of pace he's shown on a few occasions recently, didn't think he had that in his locker.

Reports linking us to Inler now, do we need him if we are taking Appiah on? Oh, my Aunty Gill is signing a 4 year contract too according to the Daily Mail.

Yeah I second that, I'd choose Heskey. He's not prolific but Defoe may well be, with Heskey as his partner.

Heskey and Owen had a blinding little spell for England a while back if I remember? Maybe Heskey / Defoe can work in a similar vein.

Harry's always talked about preferring a little and large combo up front so I suppose we shouldn't surprised.

Yeah it might seem a bit harsh on Pav who looks like he's really finding his feet now. Hopefully he will be, but I'm not sure he's going to the long-term answer.

The Darren Bent situation is bizarre when you think about it. He was so full of running and enthusiasm at Charlton. He looked he was absolutely loving it, ripping defences apart almost single handedly.

At Spurs, he looks kinda depressed, like he's going through the motions. He certainly doesn't look 'part of things' if you know what I mean. I think Harry (Hotspur) mentioned this before. Strange situation, maybe it's purely a personal problem.

Nearly all the goals illustrate Bent's ability to link to and exploit forward-flowing play, but there's no example of hold-up skill or fleet-of-foot tricksiness. We know he's not incapable of scoring prolificly, but he hasn't been aided by our system.

I always felt he bore his bench-life with dignity last season, so he deserves credit. If he's ultimately surplus to requirements at Spurs, I'd like to see us give him that credit to spend (although not against us) at another club.

Yes.

He has been an outstanding casualty of our inability to feed him correctly.

His technique is exactly as you describe. And his finishing is a remarkable combi of power and accuracy. Many of his goals go in through legs opposed to into the 'spaces' if you follow me.

The very moment in our attacks he is forced to hold the ball or is forced out wide you know that he will NOT score in that attack.

He always does his best to continue a move, but that is not what he's paid for.

The goals in that tape are largely as you described and until we give him a similar supply we won't see much like them from him.

We did preseason. And he rattled them in. It wasn't all down to the opposition.

That's a great point 9__37. He's more in the Defoe 'through ball' mould than the 'strong hold up' type mould.

With so many competitions, injuries and suspensions these days you need two sets of strikers.

So on any given day, maybe it's one of Defoe and Bent with one of Pav and (other 'hold up' type striker ~ eg. Heskey).

Thanks, James147. :P

It contains the classic lines:

'"I thought I was going to die and could not even run. I thought I'd have to come off at half-time, but in the second half I started to feel better.

"I had to go home and cook more sausages just to prove I could do it right."'

Classy.

My best mates brothers girlfriends dad just saw Harry Redknapp & Dean Ashton having a fry up in the cafe across the road from white hart lane! know anything about this harry??

Would you be genuinely offended if that comment was greeted with less than constructive responses?

Im being serious harry I just wondered if you knew if Ashton went for the ketchup on his fry up or the brown sauce

He went for the brown sauce cos he wanted it to match the colour of the shite dribbling out of your maaaaf, son :)

Well put.

I just had a mental image of Luke as that guy in Layer Cake getting a tea urn over his head in the cafe.

Watched him a couple of times and he looks like a modestly gifted Championship player.

Not very fast, technically alright ish and maybe a lot of heart.

Jones cant be on our list, he hasnt played for us before - rasiak might suit us and I'm sure he's free

I think Jones is a quality player and i can see great potential in him. Hes big strong and awqward for defenders. John Terry said last season that playing against Kenwyn was the toughest game he has played in. I wouldnt want to payvr the odds for him but i would rather see us spend 8 million on someone like him rather than buy Owen, Podolski or any of the othe names that we constantly linked with. Cant see much truth in it as i recall Chimbonda didnt leave under the best of circumstances and although i dont think he is a bad player (last season aside he was solid)i wouldnt be jumping up with excitment if we did sign him again. Bit of a reunion nostalgia about the lane possibly.

Yes.

He has been an outstanding casualty of our inability to feed him correctly.

His technique is exactly as you describe. And his finishing is a remarkable combi of power and accuracy. Many of his goals go in through legs opposed to into the 'spaces' if you follow me....

A bit like a car with no reverse gear. Or a shark - can only swin forwards.

Maybe Dean Ashton likes his fry-ups the Tyrone Mears way:

Good shout on Gio. I couldn't believe our luck when we signed him, not often we don't get our pants pulled down over signing players let alone get a bargain. If Harry wants a talented, quick target man who can score goals then he should look to loan or buy Jozy Altidore of Villareal. He's a mere 19, and has the pace and power to do well in the premier league. Villareal were originally looking to loan him out but he has recently broke into the first team there. On top of that, we could get him for very little money since he is American. Everton know this and are looking at him to lead their front line.

I think you are spot on with this and would love to see O'Hara as a regular Left-Back. He gives everything when he plays for us and we've all been whinging on about how Bale can't defend, well alright his confidence has been knocked a bit- but he's still good going forward, so I hope 'arry sees him as an option for left-mid. With Johnny 2 Saints as back-up, we don't surely require Downing do we?

The threads gettin too long so many apologies for repeating what may well have been said...

Jones- Not gonna blow our minds granted BUT he is a prospect and most quality players plied their trade at less fashionable clubs before a bigger team comes in for them. Pav, Defoe, Bent, Jones in that order gives cover (and allows us to send FC back up north to grandpa.

J2S- not Downing- is worth a decent go at solving our left side problem. Or Bale. If he can't defend stick him out of the way. I've seen him (living in wales) many times as an attacking full back. World class, against Russia and Germany... man of the match in both games.

In Russia, it seems support is growing for Spurs. Pavlyuchenko has sparked an interest in the club - because they follow their man, Roman.

I like Pav. His slow start frustrated, but moving country is a challenge and a mitigating circumstance.

His touch and control dissembles, appearing lazy or poor, but proving deft. He has a nice turn of speed when he chooses to move through the gears. His goal against Burnley was elegant.

What 'arry makes of him only 'arry and his confidants know. I hope it works out, though. Like DV suggested, a little partnership between him and GDS could turn out quite tasty.

In addition to the play, Levy may be mindful that there's a potential wedge of money to be made from the groing Russian fan-base. Spurs have a higher profile now, on account of Pav raising it to the general view. A new market opens for merchandise.

I don't enjoy thinking about the money in football. I want to focus on the play, where the thrill and the beauty is; but the financial sustainability of clubs is hard to avoid, especially nowadays, and it nags at the back of the mind.

As long as Pav scores plenty of goals, we'll benefit from the gold in his boots. But, were we to sell him, we might be selling a goose that lays Faberge eggs.

As I say, I want football to be about the game and not the rubles, euros or sterling. But, with other clubs looking financially very shaky, Levy's insistence on running the club as a viable business - infuriating though it has been, at times - has given us the advantage of solvency.

This is an excellent point. A number of baseball teams in the US have increased their revenue streams by signing top talent from Japan and subsequently marketing loads of goodies to the accompanying, er, market. So if Russia represents a similar, largely untapped resource...I say get in. Get in for them swollen petro-rubles.

Yes - he's got a free bus pass but his agent says he's the next wonderkid.

Not to be confused with Charles Xavier of X-Men fame who can control other people's minds.

Charles N'Zogbia can't do that - to the best of my knowledge. Though if he can, at least he'll be guaranteed a game every week.

I'll never understand why players do that: "I might go to Club x but I'd rather go to Club y, their bitter rivals".

If you end up at club x, you're putting yourself under immediate pressure to hit the ground running or the fans are going to be straight on your case...

Me ? I love Pav. He looks top notch and 10 goals thus far ain't bad in his first season. Plus it's more than PSB, JD and a Bulgarian.

As to the dosh situation, I think in general terms Levy knows we need to stay in the black and has carried on from Sir Alan's under appreciated efforts.

I for one would be thrilled if this plays out. I think Downing is the worst starting forward playing in the Premier League. He can't defend, cross, or beat anybody off the dribble.

In Hunt, Spurs would get a left footed replica of Steed (I think he might be two footed actually) - somebody who is tireless, looks to pass through the middle before throwing up a cross, can beat players off the dribble, and most importantly is an extremely physical defender who is really tough to break down.

a bloke in the pub said to me that Edgar Davids is training with Spurs and will sign a pay-as-you-play contract with us. I told him it was bullshit to his face but he insisted, and a wager of one nights booze was made.

Anyone heard anything about Davids cos I haven't, and I'll be...

which pub was it JP....and if it's pay as you play.....no harm done to us...maybe you.....but i think your money is safe....

I'd be very surprised if we were looking to re-sign Edgar. As good as he was in his first season with us, in the second he looked past it. Appiah on the other hand has been brilliant for Ghana whenever I've seen them play and could prove a really good signing.

As far as Chimbo's concerned he's been a liability from the beginning - the type of player who unsettles a dressing room and while he's a handy player to have, if we can get a few duckets for him I say good riddance.

COYS!!

Don't want him back - Just sayin he's the kinda player that's never gonna make a big difference on the pitch, only disrupt things of it, so we did well to get a few quid for him and I hope any speculation about him comin back is just that.
