Spurs Spank Spalletti : Here's Highlights

'Roma Therapy

What a day for daydream. Except wasn't. Tottenham for once, achieved the achievable and actually equalled the sum of their parts.

Now it's easy to say the Roman's were a fortnight behind on their preseason. But don't let the facts get in the way of a good beating. This wasn't their youth squad and it wasn't some pub team. AS Roma are Champions League gear. Maybe not top draw, but nothing to be sniffed at.

Bentley makes me grin. The housewives were out in force as his transaction dragged on.

*In whiney League of Gentlemen female voice* "I wouldn't pay £4.69 for a bottle of Bentley but I might go to £3.99." Footballer algebra isn't straightforward and does require the suspension of disbelief. But if a Jermain Defoe who couldn't reliably score and rarely assist is worth £9 odd million, what IS a David Bentley worth? You take my point.

Johnny Two Saints is surreal. If he can whizz past top four defenders as he has skinned these lesser types preseason, we're in for a bit of a campaign.

At which point I'll take Nine_Thirty-Seven's council and keep it real. Boro will indeed offer greater urgency. Few will offer less.

Here's a heap o'highlights. Enjoy.

(For those who ignored it on a previous thread ;) )

Listen. Day 1 of the premiership, 20 clubs start equal. The season is fought over 38 games. Score 1 more goal than them every game and we win the league. Simple. Don't know about breaking top 4, we should be aiming higher. Why not Champions? Someone's gotta win it. If we get a good start.......who knows? I'll tell you one thing; a lot of clubs ain't gonna look forward to playing us this season. Today was like watching the great push and run sides (from what I've seen on video!) Awesome at times today. Bring on the Boro.
Question - where would Keane have fitted in today? Do we miss him? Like fuck we do.

What a spectacle. Bentley's rocket shot and J2S' fancy footwork a sheer delight. We're on to something here folks. There's more than a turtle wax veneer at that start of this campaign. Serious.
Let the games begin.

I'm sorry to say this, as a life long fan and - for the last few (for me at least) unforgettable months - employee, MCFC as we know it is finished. Here are the FACTS, for those who really want to know. Thaksin is, as of midlnight 10th August, 2008, an international fugitive. He now has to be found guilty of corruption in Thailand in his absense, offering no defence. Extradition requests will surely follow. The PL will then have to find him short of the fit and proper ownership rules (and believe me, the pressure for that from fellow 'members' has been growing since June). Thaksin is trying to palm off City onto whoever will now take it, an insolvent mess of a business, completely incapable of sustaining itself. The truth is that the only interested party (until recently) - Wardle - is not now able to bail City out now , he cant come close on his own and no partners have been found. The wage bioll and committments due on the last 2 years' transfers have spiralled out of control. The Corluka affair is the last straw - I personally worked on the deal and can assure anyone interested that he has already been transferred to Spurs. Spurs have this evening started legal action, and he will be barred from playing for City following an injunction in the courts tomorrow. Personally I expect Hughes to then resign on principal (he has no choice now, he is on record as saying that he wilol have final say on all transfers). Many wont believe any of this, but a few will. I am very close to this situation (readers will never know who I am or how close - a few would know my name but it isnt appropriate to for me to come 'out') - trust me, I am close enough to know what has happeneded in the last fortnight, I am pissed off with it (as a fan, and as someone who has worked hard for the club durinig the ast 18 months or so)...
what do you think of that then, their club is well and truelly fucked!

I don't doubt there'll be setbacks. Like a crowd pushing agaisnt a defensive line. The impact bends the line, the line is pushed back; it adapts, flexes, holds firm and moves forward.

Optimism doesn't ignore these setbacks, nor is it unrealistic. I think it was John Lennon who said it's our duty in this world to be optimistic, and to shun the luxury of pessimism. There is too much to do, and too much progress to be made.

Take the risk. Aim high.

who knows, what we do know is that tonight hughes has said that he is delighted that carluka has decided to stay, and about 1/2 hour later his agent said he is pissed because everything has been agreed and he still wants to go to spurs. no doubt the truth will come out in the tabloids in the next couple of days.

Crazy Horse gone for £6m? Add that to a tidy £25m for Berbatov.. and our net outlay for a pair of rushing Russians would be all of, what, £4m? Do it, just do it.

1 thing i'v notived in the ramos revolution is the amount of time the ball spends on the floor. no more robbo or dawson style of smashin it 80 yards up field and losin the ball shit. simple possession football, takin our time to look for the final ball whether it be an inch perfect cross from bently when necessary or a clever throughball from modric gio and co. also it wears down and tires the opposition.if u watch gomes, who looked very comfortable today, he rarely boots it long. he throws it or plays it out to the cb's and fb's wenever possible and it just helps us stay in control. cant wait for nxt weekend

Boys, highlight of my day has to be Mexes... He already gave us in the Park Lane "the finger" halfway through the first half, so when we got on his back he got a bit stressed, so he decided to take his eye off the game to give us a "wanker" sign and before he's stopped to turn around, Bentley has picked the ball up and smashed it in the back of the net, Priceless. Woodgate was a fecking mountain today. And Gomes who I will openly admit I was sceptical of, is proving me totally wrong. Comes for everything he should celebrates goals and joins in chants as well, love it.

this is a message for HH or anyone who can help me understand this situation with Corluka.

if we have signed the papers and they have gone to the FA, doesnt that mean that Citeh would also have signed too?

From what i know, papers dont go to FA unless both parties have signed. if thats the case then how in lords name can hughes go to his clubs website and say that Corluka is going to stay a Citeh player?

It baffles me that he can think that. I understand he didnt want to sell him but hughesy my friend once paperwork has been signed by all 3 parties its a bit late to try to gazump the deal then...

im actually quite amazed about this situation and is typical of that blue lot. although saying that it wasnt too many years ago that we would have been subject to some shenanigans like that.

As one poster said previously, makes you happier and happier that ramos, levy and Big Joe are at the helm.

Onwards and upwards for the lilywhites i say - come on you spurs!!!

Major plusses from yesterday - woody looks so solid (finally cut his hair too), ledley played at all, bentley was hugely motivated, zokora was quality (didier aggro!), gio and darren are clearly enjoying themselves, gomes can rescue us if we do slip up, we can contemplate life without Berba. Didnt know what the Mexes thing was about - I thought you were just booing his pony tail. It was a great day but letsjust take it as that - Roma were poor and most of them looked a bit heavy/slow.

9_37. Nicely put. Lets hope we can achieve the breakthrough to the upper echelons of glory this season.

Ref. Team spirit: Smells lovely, but I would still like a splash of good old fashioned Brut LINK mixed in. Imagine a Dave Mac or Roberts in the squad. 8O We'd then be able to free up one of the 2 DMF's and stick on another AMF/Striker

The future is very bright, but lets look at this victory in the same way as our General Ramos "It was a friendly and the result was not the most important thing - the most important thing is the preparation for the new season". There are much bigger games to come which will hopefully include at least 2 finals and some stern character testing when those around us will start their mind games and physical studs-up assault in ernest to try and put us off our 'silky smooth game'. Er, I believe the in-thing to say these days is Bring It On - You Fallacious Competitors.
