Spurs Trust Chairman Quits Over Abuse

Thursday, 04 September 08, 06:22 AM · Comments (119)

This just in then. From the Chairman of The Spurs Supporters Trust, no less.

I don't know if he was remotely corrupt in any way and if his detractors were actually on to something, but either way, a man's family ought be left out it.

I am writing to you today to let you know that at the Trust Board meeting on June 3rd 2008, I told my Board colleagues that I will be standing down as chairman of the Trust at the next AGM after almost 6 years.

Having been involved from the very start of the Trust, as a member of the original steering committee, it has been a genuine privilege to have been chairman. I have met some wonderful people across the country and indeed internationally that follow this great Club of ours and I look forward to staying in touch with as many of them as possible.

There are three main reasons behind my decision to stand down. Firstly, my responsibilities at work mean it is becoming increasingly difficult to dedicate the amount of time that is needed to the Trust at certain key times. Secondly, the time has come for someone else to take over and thirdly, with the chairmanship comes a level of exposure that sometimes results in a very high level of abuse, insinuation and accusation from some quarters. On a personal level, being fairly thick skinned I have managed and accepted that. However, when the mark is overstepped and my family are subjected to the same, I need to draw the line and I am doing so now.
In making this announcement ahead of the AGM, it will hopefully allow other Trust members to step forward and consider standing for election to the Board of the Trust, details of that process will be sent in due course by our Secretary. In the meantime, please note the date of the AGM in your diary - 30th October and full details will be confirmed shortly. As a reminder, it is the Trust Board that elects the Chairman from the Board after the AGM.

I will be staying on the Board and my role as Trustee of the Tottenham Tribute Trust is not affected by this announcement.

In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Trust members, and indeed many other supporters who are not members of the Trust for their support and encouragement during my time as Chairman.

Yours in Spurs

Daniel

That is sad. The fact that other Spurs fans can throw abuse at a Spurs fan simply because he has a job at the supporters trust.

They aren't real fans and thats a sad indictment on a section of Spurs fans that give the rest of us a bad name.

Who'd want that position after that statement?

Please someone tell me this...

What must Pekhart be thinking, having been at spurs for a considerable amount of time, we ship him out yet again, only to borrow somebody elses prospect. I think its shameful and I'd be off if I were him.

Harry, from where did the corrupt suggestion come? It is a statement that shows that the Trust were advised back in June; the Trust must answer why they did not nake it public and explain why they did not make an issue over the abuse that is being directed to both him and his family. The diversity of opinion over the performance of the Chairman & the club during the transfer window, illustrate the differing levels of IQ within our fan base. If someone is having his family abused because of his work for the club, then it shows we have an element of fan that must have come to us from another club. Criticism is the right of all fans but there has to come a point where some supporters detail their right to criticize. "Always followed them as a boy from my armchair" has the same vocal input as a 40 year season ticket holder? I would not think so.

I know the man personally. A more class act there is not. You only have to read comments on blogs to understand how much abuse you can get being in a high profile position. There are a lot of narrow minded, obscene morons amongst our midst and it makes me cringe to know that many of them are Spurs fans.

Critism when in a high profile position is common but nothing can excuse bringing someones family into it. Its completely unacceptable and these people should be ashamed of themselves. I love my club but there is more to life than how our clubs trust is run. These people need to get a life!

They think of everything, eh?

Regarding the Frazier deal, I always thought his brother, Niles, was the more gifted. But I would have accepted Daphne on loan any day.

I think, now that Their Nibs Keane and Berbatov have gone, we might see a more relaxed and potent Mr Bent. Frankly, he has no choice but to deliver; otherwise we'll have to ask Gomes, using his pitch-long throw-outs, as an additional striker.

But, now that our erstwhile first-choice strikers are gone, Mr £16.5 mil won't feel that every failure is being over-scrutinised with a view to dropping him. Of course, the reverse could happen, and he might start taking his place for granted and chilling during matches.

But I can't see him doing that. Unless he wants to get sold to Manure.

Not too sure on that one. Benty will probably start against Villa and Pav will probably get the second half.

Will be interested to see if Ramos plays the two of them up front seeing as Villa is a home game.

Makes sense to start with two strikers at home. That'll be Pavlova and Campbell, then. :P

What are the chances of us seducing Monchi to the club? I know Levy is persona non grata at Sevilla but, if the Dame is on thin ice, he'd need replacing. Plus, that might lead to Capel's signature.

Shame Capel didn't come this time round. I was looking forward to giving White Hart Lane the second name of Capel Manor.

He was released after having a massive fallout with the chairman. Not due to injury. What I've seen of him, I'm impressed with.

He is a leader, so much so that Ghana took up a squad place at the ACN to have him on the bench during matches, even though he was injured. He is the main man of the 'black stars' and thats going some considering Essien plays for them too.

IMO would be a tremendous signing, think Zokora with a footballing brain and the ability to pass and shoot.

(Tremendous is another word thats under-used and always gives the desired effect!)

Appiah is still available out of contract better option in m/f than Zak ? any takers ?

appiah's a big gamble.he was seriously injured 2 years ago and wrongly advised by fenerbache's medical staff that he was ready to play.first game back he aggravated the injury and was out for another year.only just finished his rehabilitation and was released by the turks.if he had no injury doubts...

He was released after having a massive fallout with the chairman. Not due to injury. What I've seen of him, I'm impressed with.

He is a leader, so much so that Ghana took up a squad place at the ACN to have him on the bench during matches, even though he was injured. He is the main...

I bet Wenger picks him up for a fiver.

A fiver? Bit pricey for the gooners!

Come on he's 27!! thats about 15yrs too old for Arsene!!

In reality, if Spurs aren't wooing him then I would love to know why?? If Comolli was doing his job he should be trying to sign Appiah now. The 2 areas we need quality are Up-Front and CDM. The striking dept will have to wait until January but when a player like Appiah is free and we need a CDM I cannot understand why he's not been signed.

I say if we got him on a "pay as you play" contract it might be worth a go.

Magoolio, I bet you're right.

Off-topic, but does anyone know if academies fulfil some kind of obligation to the FA? Some of them regularly produce a higher quality of product than others, and I wondered what benefits there are to maintaining those which are less successful, and which might otherwise appear to be going through the motions of industry.

It would make sense if, in order to be eligible for certain funds, clubs had an obligation to run academies, essentially as farms to develop the next generation of English footballers. But that would presuppose that a percentage contingent among academies had to be English - which I know isn't necessarily the case in all.

I only mention this because, some weeks back, someone suggested we dispense with our academy entirely and reinvest the money into purchasing players, rather than producing them. I don't agree with that notion but, hypothetically, I wondered if it would be possible.

'THE' Ronaldo 'el fenomeno' would be disaster to sign. For the following reasons:
1) His wages would be astronomical, let alone the signing on fee.
2) Have you seen the size of him? I saw him swimming by his yacht on his holiday pics and i thought it was a whale!
3) His knee is actually made of rice paper and liquorce (obviously not) but its very very very fragile. It must be waiting to go again, especially with the excess weight he carries!
4) Hernan Crespo could be on the 'free agent' list again in the near future. Mourinho left him out of Inter's Champs League squad and could be ready to cancel his contract, Crespo would be for me, a much more viable option.

I just think its about time we all started being a bit more positive. We are going to win nothing if the fans are not behind the side. I'm not saying we aren't but over the last few days alot of doom and gloom has been floating over the club. Lerts face it, it stems primarily from a)the transfer window and b) the stench that Berbatov has left behind.

Thats what we need to do. Leave the window behind us. Its happened, we have our squad now and IMO its stronger than at this point last year. Now in recent days we have had 3 of our hot prospects come out and state their desire to play for the club and see us do well, we have had PAV & Corluka come out and state how happy they are to be at Spurs and again they want success. Lets get behind the players & staff we have and ensure that we kick on.

There's far too many doom & gloom merchants out there at present. If you want to be pessimistic and prophesise doom then go to Spurs Odious!

Harry, from where did the corrupt suggestion come? The diversity...

Yes and no.

I use the phrase remotely corrupt as a speculative gross generalisation (what???) to avoid slandering the guy but also to acknowledge there was smoke.

I have heard negative things about this lot and the very fact something is being done behind closed doors is not good.

Transparancy in peoples's activities tend to guard them against allegations.

But that's me. I don't like Private members' boards on the Internet, I'm a funny old stick. 'Cast out the money lenders mate!' might be a warcry.

Where you are absolutely and totally wrong is your 'some supporters needing to detail their right to critcise.'

As a noble reader suggested on here earlier, Paul Smith's neck must be a few inches longer today after him stretching to put his face in the frame.

If that happens, HH will go to the matresses.

Fine, if he wants Gus to be the media man then so be it, but when he is infront of the camers, surely he should be showing the fans the same respect he shows the players and speak in our native tongue.
Whats the c*nt Barbers email address til i drop him wee message. Thats one of many questions I have that need answering.

Good evening to you all. I am thinking this is a fine evening after just hearing ole 'Quitting Kev' formerly of carToon town has resigned leaving another competitor to fall into disarray following the Spammers.

The one slight annoyance is the charge that our Gus is listed as the numero uno target to work with the not so Wise weasel. I say slight, because we should laugh this off as wishful thinking on their part shouldn't we? After all he is a key element in our plans for success, adding balance to the stoic General Ramos, a ying to his yang so to say.

Hence RJ1882, in response to your question. I believe if we can surely without question keep this pairing together, the benefits of having the peoples Poyet and the rampaging Ramos together will be even more apparent. When Gus does the interview, he is positive and playful. When Juande uses the interpreter, it cleverly gives him time to work through the question to achieve the best possible answer - without scope for any misunderstanding. It gives him time -he may not directly address me, an English speaking fan, in his Spanish response interviews, but his attitude when he does (translated or not) speaks volumes. To me, where Mourinho sought the limelight, Ramos reverts to meditation, and is more interested in improving the performance than pandering to the press - that is the manager for me.

It seems as if he sings to his players, in the bastardised immortal words of Sting:
Every goal you make, every corner you take
Every attack you break, I'll be watching you

Every single day, every game you play
Every home or away, I'll be watching you

Harry's Loungr Bar is up, but very very much under construction.

I did try the 'OleOle offer forums' line... but to no avail.

Blogs by their very nature don't work as a chat device.

My aim and I hope it isn't too poncey is that the blog is impassioned paragraphs and the forum is everything else.If anything the blog should inspire threads.

If JGM wants Arabs in, let's discuss that splendid lunatic's views properly. No?

The stumbling block is the usual.

Trust me. I've been around for a while and if you build it they will come. Writing drivel will attract no one but then that is your fault not the forum's.

"Spurs Trust Chairman Quits Over Abuse"

It is a great shame, because Daniel Wynne is a nice guy, and he really raised our concerns to our club and achieved solutions when appropriate.

But, it possible that an unpublished reason could be that may have been "batting for the other side" i.e. working for Spurs at the same time** as being chairman of the Spurs Trust. Meaning that there was a conflict of interest.

** i.e. he was last season and this one seen on match days in the East Stand upper tier wearing an official Spurs blazer with the club crest on the breast pocket, and going into "not for the public" areas of the club.

If he stoppped the conflict of interest, then perhaps he could continue as chairman of the Trust.

Yes, there are one or two guys who seem to post every single thought that enters their head. But, in my experience, if I see a post from a systematic pap talker, then more often than not, I'll just keep the scroll bar moving. It's not exactly mucho problemo.

All this corruption nonsense reminds me of my time in Politics. Some jobs worth accused me of feathering my own nest just because I became a main board director of three companies I helped privitise.

Stuff and nonsense ! There's always some jealous bugger pointing a finger.

On reflection the companies may have been "privatised".

Jamie, he fell out with the Chairman over the treatment he received for his long term injury problems.

We are all aware of your oft repeated views of Appiah.

Reply to Graham:

He's a class act. Corresponded with him a few times back during darker times and he was an awesome guy. This is very sad news indeed and the corrupt insinuation with no facts makes a total mockery of this site.

This site was a mockery well before....

You rocked up.

He caused people to slander him.

Er.. that is all.

Can we move on to more new stadium talk, please? We're now being linked to a move into a new ground to be built where the 2012 Olympic Stadium will be completely torn down post-games.

Ground share with the hammerheads beginning to look more and more sensible all the time.

With us on the top bunk, natch. Especially once they get relegated again.

I certainly do not want Gus to head North and I agree that he's a very good number two to Ramos making a more palatable blend of the two. I reckon he's have the respect of the players too after a great career which saw him grace the shirt even in his twilight years.

I do feel a bit sorry for Keegan tho', unfortunately for him he's just too honest about what he thinks and believes then has to stand up and be counted, which in fairness he does albeit on the bus back to obscurity, (bless him).

But given the big noises we've been making over integrity and taking a stand over what you believe is right rather than taking the money, it's probably a bit harsh to dig at Keegan for doing just that. There's a rumour that Curbs did the same at the Spammers though the cynic in me thinks he might have taken a gamble on the Newcastle job being free soon too.

Meanwhile Ramos comes out with the company line despite I'd be guessing, him looking at Comolli in particular and wondering what the hell bunch of cowboys he's hitched his wagon to.

There are the choices chaps, stand on principle and resign/get sacked or spout the company mantra and stay employed.

Ramos of course, by telling us he's got a stronger squad and better players has now put himself on notice to do better! I'll be watching him too Trembly!

FrontWheel & Bum Steer

Ever so sorry if you feel that my posts encroach on your reading pleasure. Simple suggestion though, as nunchucks said, if you don't like it don't read it. Just scroll on by.

My problem is that due to being an exiled yid (living in a land where only the 'old firm' exists) I have very little chance to share my views and opinions on Tottenham Hotspur with anyone who knows what they are talking about.

And as for Frontwheel's "im in full time employment" nonsense, well so am I. I am fortunate that i can get on here during the day as due to BT & Wanadoo's poor service I cannot get on the internet at home (so you have a treat, no hearing from me all weekend eh wheely?)

I don't think I post too much inane drivel and 95% of my comments are related directly to what is going on at the club. So in closing, yes I know I may post too much, but its only because I love Spurs that i do. Apologies if that results in you getting sand in your fanny but there you go.

On the Poyet to 'car'Toon show at St James', I think he would be crazy to take it. They are a club with no money and no clear vision or structure. The chairman is too concerned with his personal image amongst the fans (his 'KING KEV' replica shirt is prime example) to care about how the football club is run. He admitted that no due diligence was carried out when he bough the club and this is showing itself in a woeful lack of funds, despite selling James Milner for around £11m. Poyet is at a club that is going places, has a a great manager and a great set of players along wiht a chairman (love him or loathe him) who cares about how the club is run first and foremost.

Personally I think Deschamps will take the post, an old team-mate of Wise's and he's available so Newcastle won't have to buy anyone out of a contract.

Unless they need a translator, Poyet won't be going anywhere near Newcastle. What the fuck has he done as a manager? Nonsense.

From where I'm standing it looks like that fat fuck Ashley is just messing about taking the piss.

Gus must stay, simple. A true football man, no mean player himself and a guy who raises the bar of eloquence in football almost single handedly, again, no mean feat for a man from South America - The nett result must surely, surely be that the guy is a great coach. What other credentials do you need?

Strong Rumours were that he turned down the Man Utd assistants role, at the very least he was lightning quick in playing it all down publicly.

So the question remains, which is more attractive? Newcastle's no. 1? or Man Utd's No. 2?

IMO if you can turn down one then there's no reason you would take the other.

Heres hoping anyway.
