Sunderland Indoors The PreMatch Prattle

"They... go. They vanish. People. Civilizations. Languages. Philosophies. Works of art disappear, species are extinguished, books are lost, sities drown, things once thought immortal suddenly aren't there at all. Train compartments, snuff, galoshes, paintings, dreams and innocence, music. A glossary of the missing. A cabinet of absent curiosties."

Lost Worlds - Michael Bywater

Today will be fun. Unless you're Tottenham of course. It turned out that the fella who'd been down the gym all summer working out was still a seven stone weakling after all. On his first trip to the beach he got Egyptian sand kicked in his face and his 99 stuck on top of his head for good measure by some fat bloke and his northern mates.

Wendy has called for calm. I do like him. A call for something was in order and calm is as good as any successful Russian transfer in book right now. The 'might' of Sunderland is equal to that of Boro so it is in our hands now to readdress the 90 minutes wasted last week. Ramos knows that which we don't and that is the likelihood of more inbound transfers to The Lane is now slight.

The Russian deals have progressed on a par with invading their motherland in Winter and the speculative conversations with all the others in the rest of the world have generated little or nothing beyond what was established in conversations had before the Euros. My fear is the usual backlash borne out of frustration and an awful lot of 'newer' fans who signed up for rather more than what you and I would call 'the usual nonsense'. Spending another £30 million on players unproven in this league would guarantee nothing anyway.

Brian Glanville's Immutable Law Of The Ex hovers over this match like no other. The potential unmitigated disaster of defeat would be compounded beyond all belief if Roy Keane and our 'so called' also rans were to beat us. I don't want to dwell on that.

All we can hope and indeed demand is that every man gives it his upmost. Teemu is rumoured to be out, but perhaps some of our lot will remember his spirit come Saturday...  and with the singular exception of the Bulgarian Rat... no one from our lot - gets lost.

Dont BOO! Berba. The Berbatov shirt signing was clearly a setup. The away strip of Bulgaria is RED and if you look closely at the MAN UTD shirt you can see whichever moron who is getting it signed is actually covering most of it with a second WHITE shirt! Could this even be the Bulgaria HOME shirt????
I think this whole thing stinks of malicious underhand dealings, either by the SUN or by MAN utd themselves.
Honestly how convenient that the man was there with two shirts, covering most of the MAN utd shirt and had identifying marks visible only from behind, where as luck would have it a camera was. Now this is no professional camera, because that may make it too easy to prove it was a setup!

I just can't see us losing this game. Sunderland have brought in another 4 players this week, all of whom will meet for the first time at 3pm on the pitch at WHL. At least our new boys have been introduced, albeit in passing, at Middlesbrough. I'm going 3-1 Spurs. Bent, Bentley and Berbatov.

As for the transfer lull, I am naively assuming we have irons in fires elsewhere. Corluka should happen and even if we end there, it's progress. I have faith. COYS!

Gomes
Zokora Woody King Bale
Bentley Jenas Modric J2S
Bent Berbatov

Similar to the Roma game, if things need freshening up 2nd half, Lennon on for Berbs (if hes sulkin) and switch to a 4-5-1 come 4-3-3, Lennon and J2S in behind Bent. I do not want to see BAE or Dawson figure unless completely unavoidable.

Same Shit different year. The Greeks had a word for the way we were feeling before last weeks game, Hueborous, forgive the spelling. I hear it means the smell of victory followed by the taste of defeat. Ah the highs and the lows only 30 odd to go 8O :\ :P

Hello everyone-love this site-first post for me-I'm trying really hard not to get carried away with all the fear mongering but I'm on WHL everyday for work and I think its in the air, because of what happenned last season.. Even so, I'm banishing my concerns and predicting a very classy win indeed. Its got to be on the cards, I mean surely? Its Juande innit?

I think we'll win. Please Ramos put zokora in defensive centre mid. When he's put right back it takes too much from the centre. Gunter to play right back. Also when are we going to let go of some more players? YPL, KPB, Stalteri, Rocha, Ghaly?

I'm sick of people saying that Boro was just one game and that we can't just forecast a season of doom and gloom from it. I was one of these people this time last year and was forced to eat my words like a anorexic person eating a kfc bargain bucket. I'm not making the same mistake again, we clearly have huge gaping holes in our line up and until they are filled properly and not wallpapered over I will not get my hopes up. We have some real quality at the lane right now but it's just not being exploited anywhere near enough.

I for one am looking forward to tomorrow but much like a 4-0 home win over Derby early last season, it won't mean anything unless we can kick on. Ever the optimist, I am expecting 3 points but would like to see some genuine cohesion. I would rather 1-0 and see some genuine understanding and improvement on last year, than 4-2 and just banging it upfield waiting for the lucky knockdowns (stand up Mickey D).

On berba, I certainly won't be booing him but he won't get a cheer when his name is announced. The shirt thing was a load of rubbish. Had I been walking down the road in my Spurs shirt and seen Ronaldo/Messi/Ronaldinho, I doubt their supporters would have a problem with them signing my shirt..., actually, that f**ker cost £40. Wouldn't have anyone writing on it... but you see the point i'm making, it was all inflamitory garbage, churned out by the nations favourite bog roll fodder, The Sun.

Diarra please! Thanks Wendy. COYS

Stephen, I am in complete and utter agreement with your team and ideas.

If Berba's chat with Ramos does not go well I think we'll see a revertion to the 4-5-1 and in fairness if Berba is to leave are we not better off trying to learn to play without him??

We need to get a result tomoro so that we have points on the board and morale in the camp for the Chavski game next week. A resounding victory would not only banish the dismal memories of Boro but also get the lads bang up for playing the bastards in blue.

Hopefully by this time next week a few new faces should be at the club and that should give everyone a boost.

If Berba is in indecision as it looks a little like Man U have cooled off (Huntaleer rumours?) then why not make him feel right at home on Saturday - give the man a cheer & even sing his name why not?!? - Ramos has recently said that Berbatov is 100% a Spurs player & a proffesional in training etc.
After reading some of the comments above this one there are plenty of us fans who are doubting success this season, so why critisize Berba for thinking the same if he has Champions League ambitions, it's a short career and he has the ability - If he could get CL football at our beloved Spurs (I know it's coming!) then he'd be happy as Larry!

Anyway, that's my 5 pence worth.
COYS, 3-0 on Saturday. Bent twice & Bale why not ;)

Well, the pre match chat, has begun.

There is bound to be a mix of views, some optimistic, some not so, but I tell you one thing, without meaning to put on pressure, but we've got to win this one, Sunderland at home, any talk of the top four is way off if we can't beat the geordies.

Sky Sports news are reporting that we turned down the opportunity to sign Arshavin due to the fee. According to them he is due to be offered a new deal. Great...If he doesn't come to Spurs, I for one will be very disappointed.

These bloody Russians, Jesus... why can't anything be straight forward. I suppose their Arshavin is our Berbatov and likewise they want the best fee possible, probably thinking well we've got until Sept 1st, might as well carry on haggling and see if Spurs finally pay whats required. I'm convinced if we sold Berbatov, then the signings would flood in the door, well maybe trickle in!

IMHO Ramos got it wrong last week. Of our opening two fixtures this is the one I'd have rested players for??? King would have been much more useful away, & why no bale, with Ekoto (forgive the spelling) in the starting line up, how many times were we caught out down the left last week? Personally I think we can stay positive, I'd have thought one striker before the season's properly underway, & I wouldn't complain if it was Kanoute either, technically I recon he'd fit in well with the new signings. Still need defensive mid & another defender but I think we'll bag Corluka now. Reaon I'm positive is that you don't spank serie A's runners up & champions league side with bad players. No messin Mr Ramos, full strength side & lets see how we do. COYS!!! 3-1 sounds good to me too.

I for one will only be happy if the price is right. I think Zenit have show themselves to be a bunch of jokers on this transfer and as such have been slimpickings for someone like Daniel Levy.

Mind you we are talking about the same Zenit board that sent a fax to Barca explaining that; "if you want Arshavin for £12m then sell us Messi for £20m" What a bunch of professional businessmen!

Steed was a worker, he put more effort into last season that nearly every other Spurs player. Every team needs workers like him. Especially now we have such a flamboyant midfield, we'll need the grit that Steed gave us and he chips in with his fair share of goals.
Besides his versatility was a real filip for the side. The very fact that we could play him at LM / CAM / RM would of benefitted us this season. I'm not saying he would be an automatic starter but if who else is there in the squad that can give us that variety and effort??

I cant think of too many players amongst our 7 subs that could offer us that can you?

Same Shit different year. The Greeks had a word for the way we were feeling before last weeks game, Hueborous, forgive the...

The Greek word is Hubris, and it's an easy by-product of wishful thinking in an atmosphere of media hype. Personally, I think it's best spread on toast before being rammed up one's arse.

From Wikipedia:
Hubris, sometimes spelled hybris (ancient Greek ὕβρις), is a term used in modern English to indicate overweening pride, self-confidence, superciliousness, or arrogance, often resulting in fatal retribution. In ancient Greece, hubris referred to actions which, intentionally or not, shamed and humiliated the victim, and frequently the perpetrator as well. It was most evident in the public and private actions of the powerful and rich. The word was also used to describe actions of those who challenged the gods or their laws, especially in Greek tragedy, resulting in the protagonist's downfall.

Basically the ancient Greek equivalent of an own goal.

I'd dispute that JJ can play "anywhere" I cant remember him having a stormer on the Right or Left of midfield. Having said that I cant remember the last time JJ had a stormer at all ;)

TBH i cant understand why Ramos used Steed in every game he was in charge of last year but then sold him first chance he got.

But I stand by my statement, "how many players amongst our substitutes offer us the versatility that Steed did?"

Expectations are making us a bit fickle, no? Ramos is working quite a few new players into the squad, many of whom are playing in the the league for the first time. Lets be patient, or at least act as if we're trying to be patient. What has bothered us through one game, BEA over Bale at left back, 101 wingers starting in our midfield, and a homeless man that asked me for money just the other day in San Francisco playing a shite right back, will all come to pass. This is still far from a finished product... And will this Smooth-bum talk ever end? Not until he's wearing white or the window shuts I suppose.

We sold Steed so we could afford Bentley - which i don't think i'm being controversial in saying is a significant upgrade!

Steed's a decent enough all round midfielder but for where we want to be neither good enough going forward or as a DM and Juande has decided to go with O'Hara for the reliable all rounder midfield sub role. Also Steed was a player in demand that we could get good money for and so short of someone offering us our money back for KPB, Rocha and the like we have to balance the books somewhere.

As for JJ, Ramos obviously rates him highly and thinks with the quality we all know he can produce will rise to the challenge of doing so consistently by playing amongst better company - and i'm sure we all hope he will!

I don't like it, but I can accept that Berba wants to play for a club playing in the Champions league. Supposedly he has submitted a transfer request to support the fact he wants to play for Man Utd. At least by doing that, we dont have to pay him a loyalty bonus. We would have to pay him if he hadn't submitted the transfer request.

While he is still on the pitch, wearing a Spurs shirt, I will get behind him and want him to play well for us.

I don't think he has sulked any more on the pitch recently to that when he first joined us. That is his way. Possibly it's because he knows that he is better than anyone else out on the pitch and they cant do what he can. He wouldn't be far wrong.

He is the best player we have had since Ginola and I am grateful that he has given much to our team in the last 2 years.

Perhaps I am misguided but I feel the only loyalty shown in football is by the fans. I wish that wasn't the case, but with the amount of money in the game now, players have become and will continue to be mercanaries (with one or two notable exceptions).

Hudd & Lennon to cover the whole midfield?? Hudd as much as I think he's got the potential to be great is IMMOBILE and Lennon is fine as an impact sub but who covers for him? the point I'm getting at is if we have more than one injury to one of our wingers then we dont have the options. Steed as you say was limited but was more effective than alot of people give him credit for.

And if your judgement of Chimbo is anything to go on then I dont suppose you noticed Steeds workrate much last year.

I agree, I dont see what we stand to gain by seeing Berbatov booed tomoro afternoon. IMO if we boo then what do we prove?? NOTHING. We drive him into the hands of Fergie and the red scum. It shows his position at the club has become untenable and weakens our hand in the transfer saga.

I say dont go throwing him flowers and blowing him kisses but dont go booing and jeering either. While he wears the lilywhite shirt he's a tottenham player and as such should be treated as one of us.

Here, here!
Berba joined us two years ago ahead of other clubs (possibly CL clubs) and was probably sold on Spurs' plan to get in the CL under BMJ. Two years on we've pretty much started again new manager and most of the old regime gone. In his late 20's Berba's entitled to think he hasn't got time left to wait another two years to see if this new regime will or will not work. The sulking is just his way, he is more responsible than most for the two 5th places we had. Once he goes we no longer have a truly bona fide superstar, just potential. These players don't come around very often so why hound him out. He wasn't born a Spurs fan he's an employee sold on a plan that hasn't materialised. I for one woun't blame him and to boo one of your own players is pointless and the only team it will effect is us (the others will hear it and I can't see it making anyone in a white shirt any better if I was playing against a team where the fans were booing their own team, even one member it would give me a boost! Think on, your not helping.

You misunderstood. Our first team does not look weaker but our bench & squad does. Now we have seven subs who's on the Bench come matchdays??

Sanchez, Dawson , Gunter, Zokora, O'Hara, Huddleston, Lennon, Gilberto, Pekhart, BAE. Did I miss anyone out??

That Bench has: 1 terrible CB, 2 terrible LB's, 1 CDM, 2 inexperienced CM's, 1 inconsistent RW/LW, 1 promising CB/RB and 1 young inexperienced ST.

Where in there were we to get injuries to Bentley & J2S (god forbid it happens) do we have sufficient attacking back up?? We don't.

Thats where Steed would come in handy. You see every club has players who don't seem to be world class, or are workmanlike, I mean look at Fletcher at ManUre, they would of been done for had it not been for him on sunday. Its all well and good buying fancy fleet footed midfielder but every club needs their footsoldiers.

Agree with you on that one. I still think we will need an attacking midfielder in the mix as I dont think we have enough in that area (could it be AA). Although i'd be overjoyed with 2 defenders and a striker.

But its looking increasingly likely that Arshavin is on the move. Especially now that he's been dropped from Zenits side for the weekend. I really hope the 2 defender manage to push Dawson down the ladder. ;)

Yes he should he's our best player! Even if he's not giving 100% he's still our best player. We're paying his wages for christ sake! Look at the Boro game he came off the bench and we actually started causing them problems! He must play.
As for Chimbo he was gash! I lost count of the number of goals we conceeded from set pieces from his man (he even lost Kevin Kilbane) For someone who was fairly good attacking the ball from attacking set pieces, so to lose his man on EVERY set piece that came into our box shows either a lack of concentration or lack of effort. In fact I wonder if it is a disease that someone at the club must have (like a curse) and now Chimbo's gone he's passed it to Daws!

Jamiespurs, I'm shocked to see anyone wanting a midfielder in defence(Zokora at centreback). For me that's a team distress signal. I think we should have kept chimbomba for cover right across the back line. He was by far the most competent utility defender we had.

Berba joined us two years ago ahead of other clubs (possibly CL clubs) and was probably sold on Spurs' plan to get in the CL under BMJ. Two years on we've pretty much started again new manager and most of the old regime gone. In his late 20's Berba's entitled to think he hasn't...

spot on ginge

Berbatov shouldn't even be in the squad until this mess is sorted out one way or the other. It's turned into a circus.

well said :)

opinions very divided on this one then; for the sake of the team winning a game and boosting confidence he HAS to play, simple as that, all other theories are just spurs fans thinking with their heart and not their heads....if he plays and he gets booed then we are effectively dissing the entire team, think about it chaps, it aint right

A clear indication that Levy has won another epic game of brinkmanship?? Or just proof that Arsh's head is well... up his arse??

First time posting here (live in the States, became a Spurs fan 4 years ago when I started to follow the league), but love reading this site and all the comments as well.

Anyway, my thoughts are that this dropping is in response to the "new contract talks with Zenit" leakage by Arsh's...

Im going to be watching jenas extra close on saturday, as our captain 8O , i felt in the opening match he didnt do his duties, he seemed very quiet and non emotional. I feel the tenacity of the captain can reverberate through the entire squad. I want a true leader and after the first game i dont feel jenas is fit for that role, at least not yet. i know he is young and still has a lot to learn, i do hope that one day he will be a captain not just by default

Jamiespurs, I'm shocked to see anyone wanting a midfielder in defence(Zokora at centreback). For me that's a team distress signal. I think we should have kept chimbomba for cover right across the back line. He was by far the most competent utility defender we had.

roy keane -...

el - strangely enough, I don't think Keano was being sarcastic. I remember at the time of the '91 Cup Final that both he and Des Walker were interviewed about how they felt playing for Forest against the team that they both supported as boys. Yep, Keano's a yiddo 8O

You lucky barstewards with tickets to the match tomorrow. Wish I was there.

Hope you are roaring for EVERY Spurs player. I'll always remember the incredible sight and sound of WHL as the second half began in that ill-fated UEFA Cup home match with Sevilla.

For 18 minutes after the kickoff, no one seemed to be doing anything but standing and roaring 'Martin Jol's Blue/White Army!!'

And didn't the lads do everyone proud with a fine second half performance?

Bring that level of support on Saturday - regardless of all the bullshit and bafflegab that goes on this time of year - and you'll see Spurs rise to the occasion.

Five time zones away, I'll spend Saturday morn in a canoe nibbling my nails down wondering, whilst trying to land some delicious bass. I wish you all the strength to cheer on Berbs, the patience to let Ramos work his magic and much success in the coming season.

Also, to comment on Jamiespurs on post 86 above, AA was top quality during the UEFA cup run for ZSP last season. I saw at least 5 of their games, best player on the park. I think he is a class player and will be perfect for us if he signs.

By the way, all those with the arse on Berba. What happens if he doesn't move in this window? How will you feel about him then?

Evening. In a quick reference to our old Pascal.

BMJ really must've pampered his players if this is anything to go by LINK

Chimbo was a good player, not as good as he and others possibly led himself to believe, but with a bit of self control and that ounce or so of humility could have achieved great things with Spurs.

Instead his act of petulance at the CCF, which I now believe to be just part and parcel of his character, put him in Ramos' bad books and he just didn't have the self awareness to see that he was acting as a spoilt brat. Perhaps that's why he wasn't molly coddled. He wasn't Ramos' man, as he was Jols, and hence didn't have to put up with that crap.

Lets just hope the lesson of selling him on, doesn't provide him with that self awareness and maturity that can hurt us tomorrow. Ramos knows what makes a team tick and I suspect he spotted something in Chimbonda that he didn't like, and would hinder the team that he was building.

Ref Steeeed. I also believe that Ramos rated him, however as there was good money on the table, he was merely an unfortunate casualty of business. Steeeed - do your old fans a favour and don't turn it on tomorrow.
