Today will be fun. Unless you're Tottenham of course. It turned out that the fella who'd been down the gym all summer working out was still a seven stone weakling after all. On his first trip to the beach he got Egyptian sand kicked in his face and his 99 stuck on top of his head for good measure by some fat bloke and his northern mates.
Wendy has called for calm. I do like him. A call for something was in order and calm is as good as any successful Russian transfer in book right now. The 'might' of Sunderland is equal to that of Boro so it is in our hands now to readdress the 90 minutes wasted last week. Ramos knows that which we don't and that is the likelihood of more inbound transfers to The Lane is now slight.
The Russian deals have progressed on a par with invading their motherland in Winter and the speculative conversations with all the others in the rest of the world have generated little or nothing beyond what was established in conversations had before the Euros. My fear is the usual backlash borne out of frustration and an awful lot of 'newer' fans who signed up for rather more than what you and I would call 'the usual nonsense'. Spending another £30 million on players unproven in this league would guarantee nothing anyway.
Brian Glanville's Immutable Law Of The Ex hovers over this match like no other. The potential unmitigated disaster of defeat would be compounded beyond all belief if Roy Keane and our 'so called' also rans were to beat us. I don't want to dwell on that.
All we can hope and indeed demand is that every man gives it his upmost. Teemu is rumoured to be out, but perhaps some of our lot will remember his spirit come Saturday... and with the singular exception of the Bulgarian Rat... no one from our lot - gets lost.
Dont BOO! Berba. The Berbatov shirt signing was clearly a setup. The away strip of Bulgaria is RED and if you look closely at the MAN UTD shirt you can see whichever moron who is getting it signed is actually covering most of it with a second WHITE shirt! Could this even be the Bulgaria HOME shirt????
I think this whole thing stinks of malicious underhand dealings, either by the SUN or by MAN utd themselves.
Honestly how convenient that the man was there with two shirts, covering most of the MAN utd shirt and had identifying marks visible only from behind, where as luck would have it a camera was. Now this is no professional camera, because that may make it too easy to prove it was a setup!
I just can't see us losing this game. Sunderland have brought in another 4 players this week, all of whom will meet for the first time at 3pm on the pitch at WHL. At least our new boys have been introduced, albeit in passing, at Middlesbrough. I'm going 3-1 Spurs. Bent, Bentley and Berbatov.
As for the transfer lull, I am naively assuming we have irons in fires elsewhere. Corluka should happen and even if we end there, it's progress. I have faith. COYS!
I will be distraught if I see anything other than the following appear on the jumbotron at 2:30 tomorrow.
Gomes
Zokora Woody King Bale
Bentley Jenas Modric J2S
Bent Berbatov
Similar to the Roma game, if things need freshening up 2nd half, Lennon on for Berbs (if hes sulkin) and switch to a 4-5-1 come 4-3-3, Lennon and J2S in behind Bent. I do not want to see BAE or Dawson figure unless completely unavoidable.
bloody hell, it all sounds abit dismal don't it, can't help but say ditto, well said, just have to wait and see. Can't quite believe, actually I can believe here we go again. Same Shit different year. The Greeks had a word for the way we were feeling before last weeks game, Hueborous, forgive the spelling. I hear it means the smell of victory followed by the taste of defeat. Ah the highs and the lows only 30 odd to go
Hello everyone-love this site-first post for me-I'm trying really hard not to get carried away with all the fear mongering but I'm on WHL everyday for work and I think its in the air, because of what happenned last season.. Even so, I'm banishing my concerns and predicting a very classy win indeed. Its got to be on the cards, I mean surely? Its Juande innit?
I think we'll win. Please Ramos put zokora in defensive centre mid. When he's put right back it takes too much from the centre. Gunter to play right back. Also when are we going to let go of some more players? YPL, KPB, Stalteri, Rocha, Ghaly?
Harry could you please wipe the Omelette from my brow!lets hope not my friend
spot on stephen. i don't want BAE or Dawson anywhere near the back for and I certainly don't want to see bentley on the left. we should be playing them off the park with the players we have. lets hope we see some flowing football like in pre-season eh?
I'm sick of people saying that Boro was just one game and that we can't just forecast a season of doom and gloom from it. I was one of these people this time last year and was forced to eat my words like a anorexic person eating a kfc bargain bucket. I'm not making the same mistake again, we clearly have huge gaping holes in our line up and until they are filled properly and not wallpapered over I will not get my hopes up. We have some real quality at the lane right now but it's just not being exploited anywhere near enough.
I for one am looking forward to tomorrow but much like a 4-0 home win over Derby early last season, it won't mean anything unless we can kick on. Ever the optimist, I am expecting 3 points but would like to see some genuine cohesion. I would rather 1-0 and see some genuine understanding and improvement on last year, than 4-2 and just banging it upfield waiting for the lucky knockdowns (stand up Mickey D).
On berba, I certainly won't be booing him but he won't get a cheer when his name is announced. The shirt thing was a load of rubbish. Had I been walking down the road in my Spurs shirt and seen Ronaldo/Messi/Ronaldinho, I doubt their supporters would have a problem with them signing my shirt..., actually, that f**ker cost £40. Wouldn't have anyone writing on it... but you see the point i'm making, it was all inflamitory garbage, churned out by the nations favourite bog roll fodder, The Sun.
Diarra please! Thanks Wendy. COYS
Stephen, I am in complete and utter agreement with your team and ideas.
If Berba's chat with Ramos does not go well I think we'll see a revertion to the 4-5-1 and in fairness if Berba is to leave are we not better off trying to learn to play without him??
We need to get a result tomoro so that we have points on the board and morale in the camp for the Chavski game next week. A resounding victory would not only banish the dismal memories of Boro but also get the lads bang up for playing the bastards in blue.
Hopefully by this time next week a few new faces should be at the club and that should give everyone a boost.
if he picks same midfield who says we wont be muscled out again

Cant believe we missed out on Kompany! IMO we could of got him and Corluka for around £15m for the pair!
If Berba is in indecision as it looks a little like Man U have cooled off (Huntaleer rumours?) then why not make him feel right at home on Saturday - give the man a cheer & even sing his name why not?!? - Ramos has recently said that Berbatov is 100% a Spurs player & a proffesional in training etc.
After reading some of the comments above this one there are plenty of us fans who are doubting success this season, so why critisize Berba for thinking the same if he has Champions League ambitions, it's a short career and he has the ability - If he could get CL football at our beloved Spurs (I know it's coming!) then he'd be happy as Larry!
Anyway, that's my 5 pence worth.
COYS, 3-0 on Saturday. Bent twice & Bale why not
The Berbatov saga is hijacking our season. The sooner he goes, the better for everyone.
If we play 4-4-2 with Jenas and Modic in the centre, I'll be very nervous.
Well, the pre match chat, has begun.
There is bound to be a mix of views, some optimistic, some not so, but I tell you one thing, without meaning to put on pressure, but we've got to win this one, Sunderland at home, any talk of the top four is way off if we can't beat the geordies.
Sky Sports news are reporting that we turned down the opportunity to sign Arshavin due to the fee. According to them he is due to be offered a new deal. Great...If he doesn't come to Spurs, I for one will be very disappointed.

I was thinking the same when I heard Silverstre had joined the Arse. That sort of experience would be very valuable to our youn team, why didn't we make an approach?
It's only his agent who is saying he thinks a new contract is on the cards.
Probably a last ditch effort to get Levy to pay up and get his grubby little mitts on his 10%.

These bloody Russians, Jesus... why can't anything be straight forward. I suppose their Arshavin is our Berbatov and likewise they want the best fee possible, probably thinking well we've got until Sept 1st, might as well carry on haggling and see if Spurs finally pay whats required. I'm convinced if we sold Berbatov, then the signings would flood in the door, well maybe trickle in!

not a bd shout but in YPL (if fit) haven't we got a perfectly good right footed left back?
could we not play him out of position as a right footed right back?
As I understand it, the club have been trying to ship YPL out for a while, looked like a deal would be struck with PSV but this hasnt materialised. Maybe now that Martin Jol is short of one full back he might head to the Hamburgers (hopefully along with KPB)
IMHO Ramos got it wrong last week. Of our opening two fixtures this is the one I'd have rested players for??? King would have been much more useful away, & why no bale, with Ekoto (forgive the spelling) in the starting line up, how many times were we caught out down the left last week? Personally I think we can stay positive, I'd have thought one striker before the season's properly underway, & I wouldn't complain if it was Kanoute either, technically I recon he'd fit in well with the new signings. Still need defensive mid & another defender but I think we'll bag Corluka now. Reaon I'm positive is that you don't spank serie A's runners up & champions league side with bad players. No messin Mr Ramos, full strength side & lets see how we do. COYS!!! 3-1 sounds good to me too.
Anyone seen this massively contradictory story?
LINK
Seems Advocaat and Lachter are eager for this to go through (probably for financial reasons), and its just their board being stubborn. Surely it is up to Advocaat whether or not he wants a new contract given to Arshavin? This whole thing is starting to confuse me. I'm going for a lie down
cant believe some of us are actually gonna cheer berba on sat and make him feel "at home". the wa***r is making mugs out of us and you still wanna cheer him??? do you actually think that if we give him a big cheer and round of applause he is gonna stay? more chance of us resigning campbell!!! you say he wants champions league football but he had that choice 2 years ago when he turned them down for us, whats changed?...his f**king ego. for the record I AM gonna boo him and cant wait for him to f**k off. slumping around a football pitch sulking to the team and fans that adore you is disrespectful. He has disrespected us. He can go!

Contrary to what that shady bunch of shisters at Zenit's head office are saying...... Advocaat has come out and said we are to expect to have a bit of Arshavin before the window shuts!

I for one will only be happy if the price is right. I think Zenit have show themselves to be a bunch of jokers on this transfer and as such have been slimpickings for someone like Daniel Levy.
Mind you we are talking about the same Zenit board that sent a fax to Barca explaining that; "if you want Arshavin for £12m then sell us Messi for £20m" What a bunch of professional businessmen!
Personally I think IF he signs we should recoup some of the money spent on Arshavin by signing him up as the face of Gillette.
"Gillette, the best your Arsh can get"
i thought that Barca thing was quite funny personally.

I thought so too but when your in charge of a multi million pound business you cant be acting like a bunch of ten year olds!!
Personally I think we should have done something like that to ManUre, but Levy is far too grown up to start playing silly buggers!!
I never noticed it before but, when we play Sunderland, I'll be looking at Chimbonda, Malbranque and Tainio (if he plays) to see if they bear (on the back of their necks, maybe) the instructions 'Not to be sold separately'.

I'll be gutted to see Steed at WHL in another clubs kit. I still dont know why we sold him.
Call me paranoid but, in response to my undiminished optimism that Arshavin will eventually sign for Spurs, I thought - when I saw first the headline pop up - that Setanta was calling me names. LINK

What are the chances of Ledley being wheeled out, or are we saving him for Chavs? Was he on the bench as a punishment for getting caught outside Faeces?
I can see Dawson getting selected, because it'll restore his confidence to get straight back on that horse he fell off. Not sure if it will restore mine, but dismantling him piece by piece won't help.

Steed was a worker, he put more effort into last season that nearly every other Spurs player. Every team needs workers like him. Especially now we have such a flamboyant midfield, we'll need the grit that Steed gave us and he chips in with his fair share of goals.
Besides his versatility was a real filip for the side. The very fact that we could play him at LM / CAM / RM would of benefitted us this season. I'm not saying he would be an automatic starter but if who else is there in the squad that can give us that variety and effort??
I cant think of too many players amongst our 7 subs that could offer us that can you?
You have no idea how distraught I'll be if we give that pasty bastard another second chance!! I dont care if its about rebuilding his confidence, we need results and by playing struggling error prone players we wont get them.
If he needs his confidence building them put him in the ressies where I'm sure he'll boss a few 18yo kids.
Steed was a good and likeable team member, but he was the playing equivalent of a carbohydrate. He gave us lots of energy but, in the end, left us feeling unsatisfied and wanting more.
Like most of our midfield last season. JJ became vice-captain and Steed got sold. Justice??
(and I'm a JJ supporter!)

The Greek word is Hubris, and it's an easy by-product of wishful thinking in an atmosphere of media hype. Personally, I think it's best spread on toast before being rammed up one's arse.
From Wikipedia:
Hubris, sometimes spelled hybris (ancient Greek ὕβρις), is a term used in modern English to indicate overweening pride, self-confidence, superciliousness, or arrogance, often resulting in fatal retribution. In ancient Greece, hubris referred to actions which, intentionally or not, shamed and humiliated the victim, and frequently the perpetrator as well. It was most evident in the public and private actions of the powerful and rich. The word was also used to describe actions of those who challenged the gods or their laws, especially in Greek tragedy, resulting in the protagonist's downfall.
Basically the ancient Greek equivalent of an own goal.
I'd dispute that JJ can play "anywhere" I cant remember him having a stormer on the Right or Left of midfield. Having said that I cant remember the last time JJ had a stormer at all
TBH i cant understand why Ramos used Steed in every game he was in charge of last year but then sold him first chance he got.

Expectations are making us a bit fickle, no? Ramos is working quite a few new players into the squad, many of whom are playing in the the league for the first time. Lets be patient, or at least act as if we're trying to be patient. What has bothered us through one game, BEA over Bale at left back, 101 wingers starting in our midfield, and a homeless man that asked me for money just the other day in San Francisco playing a shite right back, will all come to pass. This is still far from a finished product... And will this Smooth-bum talk ever end? Not until he's wearing white or the window shuts I suppose.

We sold Steed so we could afford Bentley - which i don't think i'm being controversial in saying is a significant upgrade!
Steed's a decent enough all round midfielder but for where we want to be neither good enough going forward or as a DM and Juande has decided to go with O'Hara for the reliable all rounder midfield sub role. Also Steed was a player in demand that we could get good money for and so short of someone offering us our money back for KPB, Rocha and the like we have to balance the books somewhere.
As for JJ, Ramos obviously rates him highly and thinks with the quality we all know he can produce will rise to the challenge of doing so consistently by playing amongst better company - and i'm sure we all hope he will!

I don't like it, but I can accept that Berba wants to play for a club playing in the Champions league. Supposedly he has submitted a transfer request to support the fact he wants to play for Man Utd. At least by doing that, we dont have to pay him a loyalty bonus. We would have to pay him if he hadn't submitted the transfer request.
While he is still on the pitch, wearing a Spurs shirt, I will get behind him and want him to play well for us.
I don't think he has sulked any more on the pitch recently to that when he first joined us. That is his way. Possibly it's because he knows that he is better than anyone else out on the pitch and they cant do what he can. He wouldn't be far wrong.
He is the best player we have had since Ginola and I am grateful that he has given much to our team in the last 2 years.
Perhaps I am misguided but I feel the only loyalty shown in football is by the fans. I wish that wasn't the case, but with the amount of money in the game now, players have become and will continue to be mercanaries (with one or two notable exceptions).
Steed is versatile, no doubt; but he never showed the off-the-cuff subtlety of this specialist. LINK

Hudd & Lennon to cover the whole midfield?? Hudd as much as I think he's got the potential to be great is IMMOBILE and Lennon is fine as an impact sub but who covers for him? the point I'm getting at is if we have more than one injury to one of our wingers then we dont have the options. Steed as you say was limited but was more effective than alot of people give him credit for.
And if your judgement of Chimbo is anything to go on then I dont suppose you noticed Steeds workrate much last year.

Here, here!
Berba joined us two years ago ahead of other clubs (possibly CL clubs) and was probably sold on Spurs' plan to get in the CL under BMJ. Two years on we've pretty much started again new manager and most of the old regime gone. In his late 20's Berba's entitled to think he hasn't got time left to wait another two years to see if this new regime will or will not work. The sulking is just his way, he is more responsible than most for the two 5th places we had. Once he goes we no longer have a truly bona fide superstar, just potential. These players don't come around very often so why hound him out. He wasn't born a Spurs fan he's an employee sold on a plan that hasn't materialised. I for one woun't blame him and to boo one of your own players is pointless and the only team it will effect is us (the others will hear it and I can't see it making anyone in a white shirt any better if I was playing against a team where the fans were booing their own team, even one member it would give me a boost! Think on, your not helping.

Hudd as much as I think he's got the potential to be great is IMMOBILE and Lennon is fine as an impact sub but who covers for him? the point I'm getting at is if we have more than one injury to one of our wingers then we dont have the options. Steed as you...
whats wrong with my judgement on chimbo? i said it like it was...he was a tw*t but he done a job for us. ok so he acted like a p*ick in the CCF but i iant gonna hold that against him for ever. the fact is chimbo never really meant that much to me so he cant upset me. and i questioned steeds work rate, i questioned his quality. if you want we can go and sign a few players from the conference with just as much work rate as steed. but if they havnt got the quality we need it will be pointless. steed was one of our best players last year i have no doubt. but he is gone now and do we look weaker???....No.

TBH i cant understand why Ramos used Steed in every game he was in charge of last year but then...maybe there isnt 1 player but we have the whole midfield covered with lennon and big tom. they will be squad players this year and both are better than steed. and so i stand by my comment that steed had to move on if we are to push on!

Berbatov shouldn't even be in the squad until this mess is sorted out one way or the other. It's turned into a circus.

You misunderstood. Our first team does not look weaker but our bench & squad does. Now we have seven subs who's on the Bench come matchdays??
Sanchez, Dawson
, Gunter, Zokora, O'Hara, Huddleston, Lennon, Gilberto, Pekhart, BAE. Did I miss anyone out??
That Bench has: 1 terrible CB, 2 terrible LB's, 1 CDM, 2 inexperienced CM's, 1 inconsistent RW/LW, 1 promising CB/RB and 1 young inexperienced ST.
Where in there were we to get injuries to Bentley & J2S (god forbid it happens) do we have sufficient attacking back up?? We don't.
Thats where Steed would come in handy. You see every club has players who don't seem to be world class, or are workmanlike, I mean look at Fletcher at ManUre, they would of been done for had it not been for him on sunday. Its all well and good buying fancy fleet footed midfielder but every club needs their footsoldiers.

ok ok i will let you have that point but i wont exactly feel sick to the stomach to see him in a sunderland shirt. if we get 3 more players in this week, which i think we will, then our bench will look much stronger anyway because of players dropping out of the starting 11.

Agree with you on that one. I still think we will need an attacking midfielder in the mix as I dont think we have enough in that area (could it be AA). Although i'd be overjoyed with 2 defenders and a striker.
But its looking increasingly likely that Arshavin is on the move. Especially now that he's been dropped from Zenits side for the weekend. I really hope the 2 defender manage to push Dawson down the ladder.

Yes he should he's our best player! Even if he's not giving 100% he's still our best player. We're paying his wages for christ sake! Look at the Boro game he came off the bench and we actually started causing them problems! He must play.
As for Chimbo he was gash! I lost count of the number of goals we conceeded from set pieces from his man (he even lost Kevin Kilbane) For someone who was fairly good attacking the ball from attacking set pieces, so to lose his man on EVERY set piece that came into our box shows either a lack of concentration or lack of effort. In fact I wonder if it is a disease that someone at the club must have (like a curse) and now Chimbo's gone he's passed it to Daws!
Funniest thing I've read in a while>>>>>

Do i feel sorry for the whinging red nosed twatbag??? NO I DON'T! On the basis of that Newcastle game, ManUre could be buggered if they don't sign another striker.
Fergies tried to outmuscle Daniel Levy and the Karate Yid has crane kicked his arse!

Anyway, my thoughts are that this dropping is in response to the "new contract talks with Zenit" leakage by Arsh's agent. Zenit have shown themselves to be quite the stubborn bunch, and I'm sure they weren't too please to have Arsh use this entire saga in the end to get an improved deal.

really hope so, the boy is class!
I'm indifferent on him. I've been through it before but he only had one good game against any credible opposition at the Euro's and he is 28. But I do think that if we can get him for the right price then we should get him becuase our attacking midfield options are looking weak.
I think above all we need a striker and 2 defenders

Jamiespurs, I'm shocked to see anyone wanting a midfielder in defence(Zokora at centreback). For me that's a team distress signal. I think we should have kept chimbomba for cover right across the back line. He was by far the most competent utility defender we had.

Ruthless sarcastic soft spoken bastard; kick a club while they're down whydontchya.
advocaat drops babybum whilst claiming his probable move to Spurs; man citeh buy a cheaper version of corluka; Wendy states we're working our nuts off for the right men for the right positions. My guess - I'm SO not in the know - is that levy is out playing hardball with all and sundry to make some stonking last minute captures. Please god.
A convincing win against sunderSpurs'B'teamland plus a few real deal eleventh hour surprises and I may even forget the opening game ever happened.

, i felt in the opening match he didnt do his duties, he seemed very quiet and non emotional. I feel the tenacity of the captain can reverberate through the entire squad. For 18 minutes after the kickoff, no one seemed to be doing anything but standing and roaring 'Martin Jol's Blue/White Army!!'
And didn't the lads do everyone proud with a fine second half performance?
Bring that level of support on Saturday - regardless of all the bullshit and bafflegab that goes on this time of year - and you'll see Spurs rise to the occasion.

Also, to comment on Jamiespurs on post 86 above, AA was top quality during the UEFA cup run for ZSP last season. I saw at least 5 of their games, best player on the park. I think he is a class player and will be perfect for us if he signs.

oh and why do you want Berba to get sore?!?!?
Evening. In a quick reference to our old Pascal.
BMJ really must've pampered his players if this is anything to go by LINK
Chimbo was a good player, not as good as he and others possibly led himself to believe, but with a bit of self control and that ounce or so of humility could have achieved great things with Spurs.
Instead his act of petulance at the CCF, which I now believe to be just part and parcel of his character, put him in Ramos' bad books and he just didn't have the self awareness to see that he was acting as a spoilt brat. Perhaps that's why he wasn't molly coddled. He wasn't Ramos' man, as he was Jols, and hence didn't have to put up with that crap.
Lets just hope the lesson of selling him on, doesn't provide him with that self awareness and maturity that can hurt us tomorrow. Ramos knows what makes a team tick and I suspect he spotted something in Chimbonda that he didn't like, and would hinder the team that he was building.
Ref Steeeed. I also believe that Ramos rated him, however as there was good money on the table, he was merely an unfortunate casualty of business. Steeeed - do your old fans a favour and don't turn it on tomorrow.
Genus, Genas, Jenus, Jenas....LINK Janus, that would be some performance

I heard that Chimbonda was a bit truculent at the training-ground - along with the Prince. I think you're right, Trembly - the player subtracted rather than added to the team spirit.
I always found him frustratingly one-footed. He often spent several touches manouvering the ball into a more favourable position before using it. By which time, of course, momentum, would be lost. I'm pleased for him he managed to flog his old hair-style to David James, with added ornamentation.
fatfish, that link to Ledley was misleading. I thought the headline 'RAMOS LOVES HAVING KING LUXURY' was a euphemistic reference to Juande's high-life.

Whatever you say Berba has serious talent. Fergie wants him cos he's one of those players who scores when nothing is on like Mark Hughes and Cantona. He also brings other players in to the game and it's no coincidence that PSB had the best two seasons of his career playing alongside Mitko.
If he stays I think he'll knuckle down and give us an even better season.
Then we can go through all this again next summer

perfect to play where???
If Berbatov stays and puts in effort then of course he'll be loved. If he stays, does nothing on the field, huffs, puffs and fucks everyone off, then I hope to fuck he breaks his leg and is medically retired . . . how the fans feel about him is entirely up to him.
Lets hope he stays, falls in love with our free flowing football, admires our water tight defence and leads us to more trophies . . . but i doubt it. He'll be gone. Its all mind games just like is happening with Arshavin

The Roller's rocky and won't go the distance I am afraid. It may come out for a short spin near the end but it won't be firing on all cylinders.
I hope someone can cut off Cisse. That might mean Thud afflicting some old fashioned damage early on.
COYS!
We can go through it again, but haggle over less money than we're haggling over now.
I'd love him to have a change of heart and say, 'Look, comrades, I made a bit of a gaffe. I want to stay now, as I really like it here, and I hope that's ok with you. If it is, I'll be like a new man. Promise.'.
But a lot of work is needed to close the gulf opening between him and the fans. And I sense that he has begun to feel vitriol for the club. Hope I'm wrong; hope he stays; and we all fall in love over again.
But I'd be more surprised at that than I'd be if I discovered Boo Radley had been my neighbour for the last 10 years.
Latest news coming out relating to Ledley seems to authenticate rumours about his minimal participation for the rest of his career.
Shame, but most of us mentally adjusted to that expectation a long time ago. I'm just amazed that the Spurs hierarchy actually seems to plan a campaign without an adequate defence.
It's good that sentiment still exists in football, but not if it risks the ambitions of the team and fans. Unless there's more to it than sentiment.

I also remember Chimbonda was linked with Chavscum not long after he signed for us, until they signed Belletti. That may have been his agent (Willie Mackay I think) or even the papers making stories up, but I bet he would have gone if there was an offer.

Don't know if Lawro predicting a win is a good thing or not.
Do you think if we shout Steeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed loud enough he might switch sides ?
Fergie is reportedly less optimistic about making a signing before the end of the transfer window. Presumably, he refers to Berbatov.
He also reveals that the Winker is progressing nicely after his surgery, thank you very much, and is returning to fitness sooner than expected.
So, are Fergie's hopes of signing Berbatov declining similarly to our hopes of signing Arshavin - hopes that have today been ascending again. Is it all just games and PR?
Or is the announcment of the Winker's recovery a way of preparing the Manure faithful for the bad news about Berbatov by weighing it against the good of their talisman?
Or even a way of pressing Levy by implying, 'I'm not that bothered any more about spending £25 mil on your striker, so take it or leave it. Your move.'?
The pendulum has swung in favour of Smoothbum coming to Spurs again. And Levy appears to be holding a winning hand. Maybe I'm misreading the situation, but I'm beginning to feel optimistic again.

ODM, I think Steed found a home of sorts at Spurs. I can't imagine he seized the opportunity with open arms to leave for Sunderland. He seems an asset as a player and a person but suffered in the end from being expendable, and Ramos cashed him in.
I feel uncomfortable about us selling him and Tainio from an emotional perspective; but, from a footballing and financial perspective, the sales make sense.
toddspur - yes, retain Berbatov and get Arshavin on top (well, not on top, but you know what I mean).
The tidbits of info we get regarding the future status of players tax the powers of interpretation. There are so many contradictions, and it's in the nature of being a fan to seize on what sounds positive and multiply it tenfold. It's almost impossible to be balanced and objective.
I know I'm filtering news and rumours through the skewed lenses of a fan's eyes, and I honestly couldn't see Berbatov staying until today. Reason should still tell me he won't. But I'm mindful that even hard-nosed businessmen such as Levy are capable of making emotional decisions. Sometimes that's probably part of the fun. And if he's sufficiently pissed off by Fergie's approach to one of his employees, I can see him doing his utmost to scupper an opponents plans.
So, yes - Berbatov and Arshavin. But I have a pinch of salt ready for each, and a bigger pinch for both.

AA is more of a replacement for Pointy Bob.
I'm happy to see him play just behind Benty if Berba goes, but would like to see the addition of someone like Radamel Garcia or Salvador Cabañas

Of course, neither are a direct replacement for Berba but we haven't got a bad record with South American players. And with Gus's connections, may be a lot easier than the well trodden path to ZSP.

You: "The pendulum has swung in favour of Smoothbum coming to Spurs again. And Levy appears to be holding a winning hand. Maybe I'm misreading the situation, but I'm beginning to feel optimistic again."
The Arshavin "saga" is beginning to remind me of that saying recently revived in "The Wire" (but I think was first used in an old late 70s Gene Hackman movie, "Night Moves"):
"Ain't nobody winning; just one side's losing slower than the other".
Maybe it should be the new club motto
Good point, BillNicksGhost. It's like a war of attrition, and the protagonists just slug it out until they both fall down.
It even exhausts the fans - and the more optimism I feel the more I risk plunging to abject disappointment at the first whisper of bad news.
Maybe the solution is to put a tin helmet on and just wait till the transfer window blitz is over.

Yeah, "Night Moves" is worth a butchers. Directed by Arthur Penn (Bonnie & Clyde) - a sort of 70s Raymond Chandler type detective flick with added cynicism.
Didn't realise it was a ton up for Tull. A genuine hero. Always thought Northampton did better by him than us.
incidentally, just to get on piste, I'd rather Verbatob stayed if manure was the only club in for him, especially if the stories of our having a two year extension option are true. If the money from his sale make quality incomers more likely however, then pack him off. Anywhere.

Do we need a replacement as good as him? He's world class and it would be a tall order to get someone in of the same quality.
As long as we get someone who can finish, link up fairly well and play as a lone striker we'll be fine. We'll be playing a different brand of football this year going forward cos, unlike last year, we have a midfield that can create. Meaning Berba (or his replacement) will not have to drop back to get the ball and make something nearly as often.

ODM - Since we're being sycophantic about pics, I've gotta say Peter Cook is a great choice. I remember him being interviewed on Parky years ago - and the professional Yorkshireman mentioned that Cook had recently been beaten up by a bunch of Man Yoo "hooligans". Typically, Cook, rather than playing for sympathy, replied that it was his own fault as he was standing on a platform at Crewe station wearing a Spurs' scarf. Like the team he supported, self-destructive, but a class act.

Cooky was for me the wittiest of them all.
I was fortunate enough to meet up with him a couple of times and he was charming, very funny and of course as mad about Spurs as the rest of us.
As Arthur Penn directed "Night Moves' I must see it. Thanks.
Things I'd have wanted, had I been good enough and lucky enough to have been a footballer:
1. Have a decent career with decent pay and few injuries
2. Play for the club I've supported since I was a kid (Spurs)
3. Play for some of the best and most famous teams in Europe, Real Madrid, Juventus, Barca, Milan
4. Play for my country (England)
5. Win stuff (fuck fair play trophies) proper stuff like the FA cup, premier league, champions league, world cup etc
6. Be remembered as an honest footballer who gave his all, made magic happen on the pitch and was adored by fans of all the clubs I've have played for.
Berba has so far achieved: 1 and 4(Bulgaria) and a bit of 6. Time's running out on what he can achieve in the rest of his career. Does he believe that Ramos knows what he's doing? I would say so. Does he believe that Spurs are going to help him achieve 5? To be honest, probably not. He knows that he'll never win anything with Bulgaria and so has to make up for that in his club career. Even if he did win the league and Champions league with Spurs, would he still jump at the opportunity of 3? Undoubtedly - as I would have. It's all about memories and although winning the league/champions league with Spurs would have been fulfilling my greatest dream - that still wouldn't complete the to-do list I set out with.
There is still a chance that we can help Berba fulfill some of his dreams, and likewise he - ours, but we have to realise that we will not be able to fulfill all of them. If there is still a chance that he can help us fulfill our dreams (automatic champions league qualification, more cups) then we should back him to do so.
In light of this, I think Levy and Ramos are perfectly playing good cop/ bad cop. Whether its decent money for him or another season of good performances, I can only thank him for his efforts in wearing the lilywhite. If as the pessimist in me points out, the sum of his influence is negative, then we won't see him for long anyway.

I couldn't remember your name either, and el's suggestion was the only way I could track it back. yes I could've scrolled through the whole blog, but I've already did enough of that last night, but didn't have a chance to reply.
Just wanted to ask GPStateside, what made you suddenly start supporting spurs 4 years ago? Was it the massive impact of Santini's arrival? The much anticipated signing of Wayne Routledge? Seriously, I'm interested especially as we weren't even really 'proper contenders' at that stage. Some would argue that we still aren't ('proper' that is, I'm sure we're always contenders for something or another). Have you had a chance yet to see THFC in the flesh? If not book your ticket across the pond and visit WHL particularly on a fa cup/european night. Euphoric as a description, seems to fall some way short.
“I think there is a very loose term about what is ‘fit and proper.’ It is almost a tongue-in-cheek term that you would use for Premier League football over the last 10 years. There are plenty of unfit and improper individuals." Man Sh*tty executive chairman Gary Cook.
Yes Gary, and Sh*tteh have contributed massively - now feckin get on and let Corluka come to Spurs already.

Yes he should he's our best player! Even if he's not giving 100% he's still our best player. We're paying his wages for christ sake! Look at the Boro game he came off the bench and we actually started causing them problems! He must play.
As for Chimbo he was gash! I lost count of the number...I'm one of his biggest fans, the bloke is head and shoulders above the rest of the team.
I'm not having this fucker mug me off any longer. Toddspur, listen, the bloke doesn't want to play for our club. You want to force him to stay? Move him on.
Arshavin, yes. Berbatov and...My point was supposed to be to never say never. stranger things have happened and whilst I feel I've been mugged as well (more so by the media, itk's, and all the subterfuge) my attitude to the subject have been rollercoastering. I'm guilty as anyone of inferring meanings from the latest headlines,...

Just saw this on BBC
Tottenham (from): Gomes, Cesar, Zokora, Gunter, Bale, Assou-Ekotto, Gilberto, King, Woodgate, Dawson, Modric, Bentley, Jenas, Huddlestone, Taarabt, O'Hara, Lennon, Boateng, Dos Santos, Berbatov, Bent.
The 'ghetto kid' has made it back in the potential line up? What do they know that we don't? Or is it just more slack journalism - I expect more for my license fee!

I can't wait for another chance to get to Wembley. I could just take the tube, but it'd be pointless unless it was on cup final day with tickets in my pocket and 'ossies dream' ringing out all around.
Perhaps its the 3 double cappuccinos I had this morning, but I can't wait for the game to start already. First game of the season at whl - unfortunately only viewed on a TV screen, but buzzing nonetheless. C-O-Y-S!

Ok. I would LOVE to see this team trundle out at WHL today, playing 4-1-4-1.
Gomes
Guntner
Woodgate
King
Bale
GRAHAM ROBERTS

1. Have a decent career with decent pay and few injuries
2. Play for the club I've supported since I was a kid (Spurs)
3. Play for some of the best and most famous teams in Europe,...
Raised some good points there Trembly. If I could, I give you an extra fan point!
I think he's done a bit of 5 as well, as he was as ecstatic as we were at the CC Final result.

Berba's Mum: 'He's not allowed out to play today he's beeen a very naughty spoilt boy'
THFC: Speaking ahead of today's match against Sunderland, Juande Ramos commented on his reasons for omitting Dimitar Berbatov from today's squad:
"As I said on Thursday, I needed to wait and speak to the player when he returned from international duty and then make a decision about whether or not he was right to play in this game. I have not selected him as I do not think that he is focused enough and I do not feel that he will be good for the dressing room and the team effort.
"It doesn't matter how good a player is, if he is not in the right frame of mind, then he will not perform well. The only thing I concern myself with is picking the best team to try and win the game.
"I shall talk to the player tomorrow, he is our player and we shall work with him at training."
Thats it
Berbatov has got to go, sulky little shit, he is paid fucking good money by Spurs and he should play. I'm disgusted by it, horrible lanky bastard,I can't believe it, its dreadful
We need to sign the two russians and quickly.
Only good news is that Ledley starts.
well thats that then, thanks for the memories Berbs
LINK
Snap - this is a real bummer. Berba was my best hope for some goals and a win.
With this in mind, if King starts, it will be a 1-1 draw. If not, we lose 3-1, with Dawson at fault for 2 of the 3 goals.
Today is going to be huge for me to judge whether JR is another Jol, with no ability to adjust to his team's weaknesses, or whether he does make the changes needed to get us back on track (King in for Dawson, Bale up front left to cover for Ekotto and Bentley moving to the right center or RM position would be good starts)
Man Utd can have him, I'll walk him there myself. As a man he has done himself no favours.
Anyone know a link to todays game.
ok, I too have had it with Berbs now, i have stuck by him and dreamt he really might knuckle down and play for us.....now fuck off to wherever you fucking want to.
One other thing - watch how Keane uses Steed today. It's a much better system than Jol/JR where players stay in their assigned area, and is exactly the same way Capello uses Gerrard where he moves all over the midfield into gaps and is extremely effective.

Thanks for that Day tripper, thats helpful, as if we need more bad news
Fuck Berbatov, self obsessed Judas cunt. Hope he is having a fucking breakdown. wanker.
Roy Keane for Tottenham manager.
The last time I felt like this about a player was Sol Cuntball
I'm going for 3-1, Bentley on the score sheet. Anyone has a link for the game?
Question then guys - what if we don't find another striker before the deadline? Do you let Berbatov go and play all season with one mediocre striker?
Also, how else do you expect a world class player to react when he is left on the bench the first match behind two much lesser players?
ledders plays, the first bit of good news today. shame dos santos aint though....COYS and fuck Berba

dont think thats an option DT. Spurs will have someone lined up, they just hoped to change bers mind, that by all accounts will be decided tomorrow when Ramos has his heart to heart, expect his transfer to Munure or Barca and us to get either Villa, Molito or someone of that calibre, spurs will have to pay over the odds but hey fuckin ho, its gotta happen

That link won't work any other ideas as i'm currently listening to commentry on Talksport!
Sounds gash, just like last year - what odds on a last minute Sunderland winner! Sounds like even Chunky Reid is playing 1 well!
By the way what is 1 striker in the entire match day squad all about! GASH!!!!!!! Not only do we struggle to stop em, we're now going to struggle to score with ONE option!
AAAAAHHHHHH
(Keep the faith Ginge, keep the faith.........In Juande we trust etc, etc!)
A midfield full of tricky pansy's!!!! AAAAHAAAHHH (I'm going for a smoke to calm the nerves!)
I know we werent much better on offense in the 1st half, but massive improvement on the D side. JR is covering Ekotto with Bale, which had to be done and King is awesome!
My best friend and I are struggling to understand why Jenas is starting over Gio? What are we missing?
Toddspur - I sure hope we dont sell him to Manure. Problem is Eto'o is playing great in preseason and with Bojan & Henry upfront too, they don't really need him. Perhaps we could swap Berba for Henry, who I think would be a good fit in our new system?
wat a droll 45mins of shite, good to see we ghave gone backwards by 3yrs
As I said before, I've made my peace - so I say to Berba."Thanks, but now kindly peace off for a big wad of wonga".
The first half has been frustrating. We're hardly:
1. Dominating in the air - nosworthy/bardsley is just pinging them away.
2. Dominating in midfield. We're getting stuck in, and risking damage to some of our dead ball specialists, Baler and Bentley both got big knocks.
3. Producing the killer pass to Bents. He's not once had it into space to his feet the way he likes it.
Worse still, the best player on the pitch has been Steeed! Luka is playing some nice touches that aren't quite coming off. Zoks doing plenty of nice runs, but no one is picking it up from him. Bentley seems to be playing the floating/linking role behind Bents (and not on the left as the commentator says).
We're not going to get anywhere trying to hoist it in to one target who's not that physical in the air, so I would suggest we stick Gio on to win some free kicks and let Baler and Bentley set-up/score from there, thats the only way I can see us winning it at the mo.
PS Baler's dive reminded me of a certain Jurgen of yesteryear - he perhaps needs to watch a few more vids to get it right.
PPS Our Roller is purring nicely. King Ledders is a man mountain and I wish he could play every game.
COYS. Big 2nd half coming.
No idea if this helps but try:
http//www.veetle.com/viewChannel.php?cid=488fda2b0fd7f
we really are in trouble, not because we haven't got ability, but our confidence after two games has gone, whats happening to Spurs
Juande needs to get a fucking decent defensive player with 2 fkin legs...And why the fuck are you going to leave Berba out squad...this manure business has been going on for 18months and hes saying hes not focused now?...
boooooooooobooooooobbbooooooooooooobbbbooooooobbbbbbbbbbbooooooooooooooowat shit
i hate this job..... lets face it guys we're either gonna win 5-0 or lose. i belive that sq
squad is the business but its another fekin settling in year aint it. bollox etc. gonna finish the business of getting drunk now

This result is down to Berbatov. If he'd have gone a month ago rather than sulking, hw wouldn't have had to be dropped, we'd have 30 mil in the bank (or 2 new players) and 3 points against the the mackems. Berbatov - fuck off; Bimi - fuck off. Is funny how he can play and score 2 goals for Bulgaria and not give a shit about his employers. Berbatov - fuck off you mopey dopey cunt.
"0" points!!!! and chelsea next week!!
Bent is simply not good enough, and continuesw to show very little. The team that sarted today looked lost, and had no cuttin edge.
What is the point of Lennon?? Pace but nothing else!!
We are playing the relegation game, and Ramos will be sacked very soon!!!
i thought we played well after sunderland scored their 1st goal there was some good link up play, we realy need a defensice midfielder or play hud from the start, feel depressed but feel the season could still be a success, we were unlucky more than anything today, out played sunderland most of the 2nd half, think we will get something nx week against cheski
ball to that. modric was'nt there yet,its messy but theres a side there. bobasulk can fuck off any time soon please. no idea really, i'm not ramos, but can we please defend sometime
and bale aint a striker.....still had two great chances

Berbatov was brilliant for Bulgaria in the week then refuses to play for us. DB and BD go fuck yourselves.
Dannyboy - some year you're going to have a decent post and I'm going to fall over. I think the end of Bimi's post applies perfectly to you too.
He wouldn't be here if JR could have signed a striker any time in the last 3 months - how the bleep is that Berbatov's fault?
How about blaming JR for letting one of the 5 best strikers in the EPL go without replacing him? Or for a strategy that relies on a mediocre, relegation-club quality striker in Bent to carry the club? How about JR for sitting his best midfielder on the bench for the start of this game? Or playing one striker up front at home? Or how about the players for showing no life until they were down a goal and new subs were brought on? Sure, lets blame Berbatov. Unbelievable.

agree with all your points. Berbatov not playing cant be attributed to 11 other players playing like a bunch of cunt.
however berbatov IS a complete scummy cunt, his fault or not.
Personally I think asnyone who has a hand in our transfer dealings this window needs to be hel accountable for the unbalanced and lightweight squad we are burdened with.
I'm sure the board have been working hard to get players in but the ones we've managed we're not the biggest weakness we had (hardworking DM and at least one new defender). Since then we've lost Pointy bob and we're now left with two forwards, one of whom wants to leave. The season is two weeks in and we have no forward line! Unprofessional simple as.
Mr Levy I think you've done a lot for the club but to leave us in this position is f'ckin sh1te!
and we have got one week to sort this shit out. we need at least 3 new players but preferably 4. we look like half a side at the moment, even after all the money we have spent!

still no bite in the midfield, still a real lack of quality at the back , three points is a must with chavscum away next, can the seven stone weaklings step up to the plate??
