Wendy says that his hopes and aspirations are still intact which is terrific news as we're only one game in. And whilst some of us thought that Mitka was merely contemplating if his 'chewing gum lost it's flavour on the bedpost over night' it emerged he too was eyeing the future. Really!
Hofmeister encouraged us to follow our dreams if our dreams were yellow tins of low rent lager and follow the bear. Dimitar has at last revealed his sights are set on following a man who at the very least looks like a bear these days, Eric Cantona. I churlishly look forward to seeing you in a decade's time then with three chins and a beard desperately trying to get acting roles that Gerard Depardieu has turned down.
I predict more days like these of uncertainty, navel gazing and boredom. We need more than one or two of these prospective signings to materialise. We need to get our house in order and now. Sunderland is a must win game. Chelsea Away and Villa indoors are just up the road and the outcome of those two games could, unbearably shape our season.
This is brief friends, but I see no point in us chasing our tails here.
Prematch Prattle is a coming.
I dream of Jeannie.
Nice one HH, I too am getting a little sceptical as to just what the hell is going on.
Smoothbum is, now isn't. Was he the answer anyway? I'm not so sure. Time is running out, and as Rednose said, Man Utd have time on their side.
Who is Jeannie?
frankly i'm not so concerned. we have started on the road for the last four seasons and haven't really done that well in any of the first matches. two of those seasons we were 5th and i really don't think ramos would let his squad come unstuck after such hard work in the summer.
berbatov should go, it'd be a relief for everyone. i wish he'd stay and be the one to score 25 for us but i think we all know that's just not going to happen. at least they saw the need for defensive reinforcements though, we're gonna face a lot better this season than middlesbrough's frontline.
Please stop asking him what he knows...!!! He gets his information from other spurs message boards and portals. Sign up to on of them and you can have your own little blog just like Harry. Stop with the pseudo intellectual shit mate it dosen't suit a pretty little girl like you...
The whole berba thing has become nauseating,In truth I don't think anyone truly cares whether he gets his wish to fulfil his dream or stays with us. We just want it resolved!!
Also anton 'rude bwoy' ferdinand is not the answer JR !! we do need to draft in a CB sharpish but lets not make any hasty descions.
corluka is by far the ideal signing but other than that what happened to jarque ??
The season has started, we're up to 3 players short and the window is soon to slam shut on grubby little fingers....nice to know we've got things in order. HH, how about a quick run down on who we are gonna get in the next 2 weeks....
I am beginning to get the feeling that Levy hasn't got the money that we all think he has. If he did surely he would just pay the extra £2m and get on with the other signings (if there are to be any). It almost looks like he has to sell berba to fund the other deals.
Also with regards to the Arshavin transfer surely Levy can understand Zenits position with not lowering there price as that is exactly what we are doing with Berba and Man U.
Is there any truth in the Veloso story as we are in deperate need of a holding midfielder.
Thanks HH.
I'm going on Saturday and am a little worried. We always seem to concede goals from ex-spurs players. Harry you like to see Berba play from the start? (If he is still here)
Berbatov must start v Sunderland.
Without him we have no link up play in the middle as we saw on Saturday.
While he is a Spurs player he gets my support and he should stay unless Manure match our valuation.
Would prefer we buy a DM but OHara has at least some of the bite we missed at Boro and all last season too.
Playing him provides cover to the defence and gives Gio/Modric more freedom to play creatively.
COYS!
The weekend fixtures saw:
70% home wins
20% away wins
10% draw
Who's to say that, had we been at home, we wouldn't have been among the 70%? Worth bearing in mind, before we allow doubt to take a hold.
Gentlemen .. its a great day in history. The 19th of August. It also means that we have a good bit of time left until the end of the transfer window .. this team is too good on paper not to make something happen .. optimism, as ever, as only us yids know ..
Although i'm enjoying holding off Man U for Berba (it's about time someone stood up to their transfer bullying), it would surely be best for everyone if we just got rid of him now. It must be taking it's toll in the dressing room.
I'm very worried about Saturday. Mido scores against us at the weekend and we have Steed, Pascal and Teemo all coming back to WHL with a point to make to JR!!!
Jeannie - magic!
A fox, not in a box, but in a bottle. Well to start off with at least - or was she always in the lamp thing. Either way, I would what was wrong with Capt. Hagman anyway - is it because it was PG rated? I mean she was gagging!
What I'd like is a bit of magic, not Paul Daniels style, a bit of proper Jeanie blinking, or Samantha Stevens nose twitching. HH can you magic up all the ITK's in one room and make them tell us WTF is going in. No news is supposed to be good news, but no news is just driving me nuts.
Without harping on about the bloody Boro game, I think Hansen sumed it up best, he said a lot of very talented players, but a definate lack of balance and steel, I think the midfield looked very small and hardly combative, jesus, whats happened to us, Ramos must know what areas need attention, why have we not signed the players we need. Surley they can't flog Keane and Berbatov and be happy with Bent and a 19 year old mexican lad.
To give us a decent chance of getting into the top four, I believe we need a decent centre back (Dawson, lovely guy, but turning into the ginger pele) a strong experienced defensive midfielder and two top quality strikers (assuming Berb has gone)
Will it happen, who knows, but everyday, I, like many Spurs fans scour the net for info, in the hope than one day, we will be greated with "Spurs clinch sensational double signing of Arshavin and Pavlyuchenko in 35 million pound deal" Indeed Harry, sweet dreams!

We would of had some link up play in the middle if Ramos hadn't lost the plot and decided to change the whole formation around and play a different system to the one that saw us play so well in pre-season. Why move J2S out to left wing when all summer he's done so well in behind Bent? Why play Bentley out of his favoured wide right position?? why keep Bale on the bench and play BAE instead?? Why play Les Dawson at CB when a cardboard cut-out of King would of done a better job??
I think the Boro game was a lesson for Ramos in why he should pick his strongest side every game and play players where they are most effective.
More bad news for Citeh fans...... If this doesnt smack of desperation than what does??

Corluka, pack your bags. Your taxi to WHL awaits!
Harry I know that you don't have all the answers so I'm not going to ask any dumb questions. However I and many others do like your entertaining blog so Pops entering the blog chart at no. 6 above should introspect and excommunicate.

Can you confirm if Anton Ferdinand and Veloso deals are just paper talk Harry?
of course he cant. he just nicks his news and 'inside info' off of coys. hey dont forget to click his sponsors.
We're all passing the day talking boring shit, because nothing is fuckin happening, someone must know, ITK's are shit.
I wish Berby would just start crying instead of sulking. Then that would be okay and noone would mind and we could be happy in the knowledge he was just emulating the actions of another Spurs legend.
KEEP BERBATOV (who cares if he doesn't smile. He is brilliant and this isn't a Miss World competition).
BUY CORLUKA (or another top defender)
BUY MIDFIELD ENFORCER (ideas welcome)
I'm not sure how much more dissecting we can aim at the wknds loss; we all knew it'd take a few games for the new signings to bed in properly. What we didn't know was that we'd start with a makeshift defense that really only served to highlight the deficiencies in our summers spending so far. In fact, for several seasons we've been crying out for a Defensive Mid and a top notch centre back (not to mention an out and out left winger!), so while Woodgate is a signing in the right mold, his tendency towards injury means its unlikely we'll survive without someone else coming in there too. How we play at home next underlies it all for me. thats the start we should be looking for.
These are the words of Diego Capel when he found out Barca were interested in him "The fact such huge teams are interested in you fills you with pride, but I’m relaxed and happy to play for Sevilla, who are a big club,”
That to me is a fantastic display of loyalty and exactly what Berbatov should be saying, instead of saying I dream of Manure, FUCKING MERCENARY
Sorry, I'll shut up about Berbatov, I'm boring myself
There's some real bitter boys about today. To be fair lads, keep your opinions to yourself, we use this blog to chat as fellow spurs supporters, HH hasn't claimed to know things others don't so take your pointless whining elsewhere... It's ashame that some supporters of our beloved club don't seem to possess the manners and grace that others do.
Supporting Spurs is like living in an episode of Dad's Army.
I can hear Private Frazer intoning, 'We're doomed.'
Then there's Lance Corporal Jones yelling, 'Don't panic!'
What I want to hear is the spiv, Private Walker - the man who can get you anything, including a couple of CBs, a DM and some decent strikers. "Mind you, as it's war-time it will cost you, 'cos you can't get 'em."
I've never thought of Levy as a spiv before.
I can't stop thinking of Dawson as Private Pike.
Why is it the world and his dog can see the glaring holes in our squad and yet we haven't made the required signings. I am also a little bemused as to why we haven't signed one Spanish player.
Any team wishing to perform well in the EPL or in any other league for that matter need to do so from a base of a strong defence, i see our defence as one of the weakest in the league.
Unless this is addressed in the remaining 10 days or so it will another season of us Spurs fans scratching our heads wondering wtf is going on

Hey waccy, remember the grapes?
Do you honestly think Berb will play Saturday? I don't, and I think it will be sorted by then. He and his Alice would need appease the Spurs faithful, or the club would need to make some statement. I for one won't boo, but won't applaud either.
Trouble with all these other rumours is that we're all building ourselves up with talk of stars and all we'll get is meteorites.
Manure had the Neville brothers, and now have the Da Silva brothers in the their ranks. We're crying out for help at the back, why not add one more and go for the Dawson brothers. They won't have the excuse of not knowing each others game
Seriously though, I can't help but wonder what two x Two (four?) Saints would be like in lilywhite....(with a solid defence behind them of naturally).

Its bad enough having one of the useless bastards in the side. Let alone having two!!

J2S has done no wrong in my eyes yet. And Johnny's brother Johnny would be welcome at the lane also. However, I reckon theres a few people at Barca wondering why they sold J2S. Still, their loss.
BAE and Dawson's only relationships are the fact they play for Spurs and that they are both shite. Unfortunately for us they decide to unite and both conspire to be shocking against Boro. In fairness to BAE his mistakes did not lead directly to a goal. Whereas Les Dawson's mistakes lead to ALL 3 goals!
Can we sign a CB that knows how to mark?
Ramos knew that Jol spent his money on attackers like Bent instead of a decent CB.
Even with Woodgate and Hutton, if Dawson is more than a sub, we have to win games 4-3.
What about signing someone like Giourkas Seitaridis or any CB with over 50 international caps and CL experience.
Jamie. I'm just annoyed that I put forward a team selection with BAE at left back. If he learned to defend (or could be coached to defend) then I'd be happy to keep him behind Baler in LMF. I'm thinking long and hard about what line up I would put forward for Sunderland. Its unlikely that any buys before Friday would slot straight into to the the starting line up.
Wasn't serious about the Dawsons. Only mentioned it because I saw a replay of Hull v Fulham. How good is Nicky Barmby still? We could have done with him a bit more over the years. Shame he suffered from northern 'homesickness'.
The OS says:
'And defender ‘Daws' is refusing to dwell too much on what happened at the Riverside - a game he feels could have gone either way.'
'Either way'? What - bad, or very bad?
Am I wrong in thinking there's merit to be had in dwelling on mistakes? You can learn from them.
3 positions we need to cover, CB, DM, Striker.
3 players who are all playing in the prem, for "lesser" teams that we could get.
Upson - I dont care that he played for the scum
Diarra - I dont care that he played for the scum
Santa Cruz - may have to buy his little brother as well as he has just signed for Blackburn
We could get the 3 for around the £35m mark.

Barmby was fine at WHL. It was his wife who couldn't hack the big smoke of North London!! She whined and whined until he left & lets face it he's never been as good since he left Spurs.
I know you were joking about the Dawsons but i'm so very annoyed with him still that the mere mention of his name sees me punch the nearest object. I have not rated him for over 18months now ans yet somehow we offer him a new contract!!
BAE has shown complete ineptitude at defending since he joined almost 3years ago. Not once have i seen him play in a PL game and defend well. If we want to keep him then play him in the cups so that he learns how to defend. Bale chose us over UTD because he wanted to play LB and Fergie wanted him to play LW so in order to keep Baler happy I want to see him played alt LB, at least he knows how to track back and defend & his athleticism and pace help him work his way up and down the flank with ease.
I think if King isn't fit to play against Sunderland & Hutton is still injured our back 4 should be:
Gunter - - - Woody - - Zokora - - - Bale
Dawson has had enough chances to show he's got what it takes. We cant afford to keep giving him the opportunity to fu*k things up for us!

We'd need more than £35m but they are players i'd like to see in the side. Apart from Upson (another injury prone CB!) Pompey wont let Diarra go on the cheap. and Rovers will wan to keep Santa Cruz after he battered Everton on saturday.
really dont know why everyone is shitiing themselves after 1 f**king game. if we were unbeaten in the first 10 and then lost to boro knowone would of cared. but because its the first day of the season everyone gets prang! its also pissing me off that people are questioning Levy's decisions with who to get in. The man is the Chairman of, not only spurs, but one of the biggest firms in the land and we are lucky enough to have someone like him genuinely care about the club where as most chaiman sit on their arses and count their money. I trust Levy and Ramos 100% and personally think they have a couple of tricks up their sleeve before the window shuts. i rekon their will be 3 new players there by the end of next week.
so come on boys lets stop getting so negative and trust the powers that be. things could be a lot worse.....we could be man city!!!

Well said, I am in agreement. Whether we can get 3 in before the deadline, not so sure. A new quality DM right now could really get us going. Fingers crossed. It's gone very quiet from any ITK's at WHL
Well said johnnyg. No need to panic. I remember how shocking Berba looked on his league debut away at Bolton 2 years ago, and how bad the whole team were. Much worse that saturday. Boro are very similar to the Bolton side of 2 years ago, tough to break down, especially in front of a rejuvinated home crowd, the players wanting to put on a good show after reducing ticket prices in an effort to get more fans into their ground. We finished 5th that season and Berba showed his class.
This is about the only Spurs blog I enjoy reading as most of the others are full of stultifyingly ill-informed cretins. This one seems to attract the more discerning Spurs fan. Let's turn those frowns upside down. Can't wait to stroll down Park Lane on Saturday and watch our boys put on a good show.

Exactly, well said Gazza. If Berbatov plays like he did at Boro that is fine by me. It is how he kicks a ball that counts not some smile-a-thon.
We just need to fix the defensive part of the side, in central midfield and central defence.
Do that and keep Berbatov then we got a shot at a great season.

Anton is looking likely. A typically over rated Englisg defender. An unlikable Dawson.
The desire for an average young CB begs the question of why sell Kaboul?

JGM - what names have we actually officially chased that are average?
Paper talk is just that. Talk - hot air - guff. None of us expected Modric or Dos Santos. We only found out about Gomes and Bentley because they were drawn out affairs. Until its correctly reported that we've officially lodged a bid for Anton Ferdinand, I'd hold off from slitting the wrists just yet.

Captain and JohnnyG
I dont think everyone is pancicking after one game. Its more frustration as it appears that the same problems that hindered us last season are still occuring despite us going out and overhauling the entire squad.
I hate to bang on about it but Dawson should not be at the club let alone the proud owner of a shiney new contract. He's just not good enough and he showed that last season but we kept him, played him and once again he proved to be our downfall.
BAE hasn't played a proper competitive game for over a year yet we throw him in on opening day of the season. He has a stinker and we lose the game.
All the noises coming out of the club and all us fans agreed that a good start was vital. So instead of doing what every other club did on opening day by fielding their strongest side, Ramos changes the squad, style and positions around after a very promising pre-season. Resulting in us failing to hit any rythym whatsoever and meaning that come the 71st minute the game was a stalemate and Boro had the upper hand.
It was almost a mistake made out of the Martin Jol handbook. Ramos needs to learn that tinkering dramatically with the side rarely works in the premier league. We need to field our strongest side EVERY game.
Headline from The Sofia Echo:
'More babies means more future Berbatovs'
The article goes on to talk about the birth-rate in Bulgaria blah blah blah. Doesn't mention our national hero once. Wonder how many male babies will be called 'Dimitar'? His destiny is not his own.
Meantime, parents in England are scrambling to called their boys 'Daws'. Imagine the stick they'll get at school.
I feel for all the kids out there called 'Daws' I think its actually slang for imbecile in some parts of north london!
Let's be honest, Daws was ok once. A series of unfortunate Robinsons and Kabouls put paid to that. Now, Daws may yet become ok again. But we need ok now. Actually, we don't just need ok - we need very ok. Can we wait? No. Can our blood pressure cope? Well, maybe the younger ones amongst us.
If Ferdinand came I'd want WHL fumigated when he eventually left.
Jamie - You've got to admit that some of the posts since Saturday have been manic depressive, bordering on clinical. Everyone has a right to an opinion, and perhaps there's an element of bandwagonism, or mob-like behaviour, but i would suggest that some people check this out just in case LINK the mental feckers
On the OS, Spurs celebrate Woodgate's 200th league appearance of his career, made last Saturday against Boro.
They make the unfortunate decision to entitle the article - 200-up for Woody.
When I first saw the headline, I wondered if it referred to the speed he was allegedly doing.
I was at the airport on Sunday, checking in using one of those self service machines. A girl using the machine next me asked for assistance and it turned out she was a Bulgarian flying to Sofia. With my current annoyance at a certain countryman of hers, I refused to help.
Sad, but true.
Turned out she'd missed the plane anyway.

Dawson WAS ok ONCE! Ok, last season Robbo scared the life out of everyone, as did Kaboul. BUT now theres Woody and King playing next to Dawson and he's still crap. Scratch that, VERY CRAP. He seems to be unable to do the most routine pieces of defending and its cost so many times. I reckon we should bench him, give him a spell in the reserves and make him work for his place. IMO he's far too comfprtable at the club, I think he's stop striving to become a better player now that he's got his feet under the table and a nice new contract. Make the fuc*er work for his place & until he improves don't let him back into the side. Then we'll see what he's made of!
May sound harsh but IMO its very very fair. We need players who are fully committed and playing to the limits of their capability. He's not one of them!

But, Trembly, it's all there in black and white:
'What causes bipolar affective disorder?
Differences in people's footballing preferences can make them more vulnerable to develop bipolar affective disorder. First-day-of-the-season defeats, raised and then dashed expectations, or lack of cover in vital areas of the team can trigger individual episodes of illness.

Agree some people wanting to top themselves is bit excessive but in reality its only because they've seen another shit performance.
It is only one game in and no doubt we will get better and I still expect us to finish top 4/5. But Ramos needs to start playing the right players in the right positions and playing the best players from the start.
I'm not saying we should get rid of Ramos NEVER WOULD I SAY THAT! i'm just perplexed by what he did on saturday. And through the haze of my Dawson induced anger I'm trying to be realistic.
To be honest, Trembly, I was mightily pissed off myself on Saturday. It's the swing backwards of the pendulum after all the emotional investment post-last season and pre-this season.
It's a credit to Spurs fans that we're so passionate about the side, but we can't give ammunition to the finger-poiting 'You're fickle' brigade.
We may not get all the playing-staff we need. I'm optimistic we will. But, even if we don't, we still have a talented squad and some top staff.
Bar Dawson, of course.
Bless Mr Dawson.. He seems to be completely oblivious to the fact he was majorly responsible for the defeat on saturday
"It was a bad day for us," Michael said.
"Credit to Boro, they worked hard and did their job well, but if we'd have got that first goal they might have come out at us and we might have got another one"
I think that should be translated to "If i hadn't of let Wheater walk past me for the first goal and if i'd done my job and cleared the ball for the second goal then we may of won"
May I suggest that for all the Dawson-Bashing thats going on, no-one has questioned our attacking players. Yes Dawson didn't do his job, but the fact we didn't score suggests to me that our array of attacking talent didn't either.
Jamie - Say you were out in Glazgee on Saturday night. And you just so happened to bump into Daws (who made a quick trip up from Mackem land to say visit some friends or munch on something local, having just played like he did last week. Would you:
1. Give him a piece of your mind
2. Seriously verbally abuse him
3. Pour a pint at him
4. As for his autograph and say better luck next time eh?
5. Lace him in the nads?
I'm guessing you're not very happy with the man and would currently go for option #5?
PS. If I even hear a hint of calls for Ramos out this early in the season, mental is the way I shall be going.
I would have loved to see us go all out for Diarra this summer. Remember when the Chelscum came to us in the FA Cup replay a couple of years back and Mourinho put him at right back. Joley chucked Lennon on the left to run at him as he was playing out of his usual DM slot (when Lennon was pretty much at the height of his popularity... so far) and he was outstanding, not only at keeping Lennon quiet but breaking everything up. He was MOM that night and has grown ever since.
We have indeed got a great management structure in place and I have faith that i'll be getting value for money again this season. Would like to see Pavlyuchenko at the Lane. Bit Rawer than you'd ideally want a 26 year old striker to be but has a touch of the Berba about him before he joined the Blue & White army.
I REALLY hope Dawson re-discovers his form. He seems like a great lad and I want to be happy to see him in the starting 11 again... And his bird is FIT!

May I suggest that for all the Dawson-Bashing thats going on, no-one has questioned our attacking players. Yes Dawson didn't do his job, but the fact we didn't score suggests to me that our array of attacking talent didn't either.
Our array of attacking talents weren't marking the 2 goalscorers. Even after we had a lucky escape and Wheaters 1st goal was disallowed Dawson still neglected to mark him sufficiently for the second, forgetting to stick to his man even after the initial cross had been cleared. The 2nd official goal was again Dawsons fault.
Ok we didnt score but if dawson was sufficiently switched on we wouldnt of conceded either. Turning a defeat into a draw.
I'm hoping that Ramos will revert back to the side and formation that hammered Roma (incl. Bale & King starting) against Sunderland on saturday. I'm confident the goals will come but unfortunately we need to stop conceding to give us a chance of winning games.

I'd probably go for a good 1 then a 2 then hit him with a 5 when he least expected it then 3 then just to make sure there's no hard feelings i'd go for number 4
But seriously.... he shouldn't be near the starting 11. He's our weak link and everyone knows it. Until he improves or pulls his head out of his arse then he should be in the stiffs.
You fail at reading, I acknowledged Dawson's failure to do his job. If the attackers had done their's we would have drawn too. 2-2. Swings and roundabouts I'm afraid. You can try to find a scapegoat all you want, but you wont turn football into an individual sport, it's a team game. Our team wasn't good enough on the day. Deal with it.

Similar thing happened to me a couple of months back to your hypothetical daws situation. Was down in Portsmouth, drinkin with mates in tiger tiger in gunwharf, when who should i turn to see standing next to me at the bar... Judas himself, having just played in some pompey charity match. btw, it was student night (cheapskate/pervert!)I was stood there open mouthed, and he was then swarmed by people before i had the chance to even contemplate throwing my double vodka red bull on him! Mate I've dealt with it. I'm in the post mortem stages at this moment in time. A team sport it may be however.... every team is only as strong as its weakest member. Unfortunately on Saturday DAWSON was our weakest member.
I could understand your point at trying to apportion some blame onto our attacking players if they had wasted a miriad of chances, constantly construing to miss the unmissable, hitting shots high wide and handsome at gay abandon and generally being unable to hit the proverbial cows arse with a banjo. However, they didnt do this. The generally didn't create chances and therefore only a small part of the blame can be apportioned their way.
In times when the strikers aren't scoring we'll need our defence to do their job and stop us from conceding goals. Even BAE's shocking performance was not responsible for us conceding a goal on saturday but from the obscene amounts of times i've seen Boro's goals on saturday I can say hand on my heart that Dawson could be blamed for every goal.
Go figure. Football is not an individual sport but you only takes one turd to spoil the swimming pool.
It's a charming anecdote you suggest, but if both teams are in the pool then I say shit away, may put them off. I'm trying to give a balance to all the Anti-Dawson stuff, thats it.

I agree maybe I am taking it all out on poor pasty Dawson. But you have to admit its obvious to everyone that saw the goals go in on saturday that the only thing they have in common is that Dawson could of stopped every single one of them.
Teams know he's our weak link and until he stops being a defensive jellyfish they'll keep targeting him. When he has a stormer i'll be the first to congratulate him. Until then I still think 95% of the blame for saturdays defeat lies at his feet.
Roma were pretty ropey, jamiespurs, really; and we all knew the first game of the PL would be a stiffer, sterner test. The first two goals against Roma were gifts, too, remember. Had they not been so gracious, maybe we would have huffed and puffed without blowing their hose down all match.
Dawson will leave next season and mature into a great centre-back elsewhere, if we're not careful. I do believe in pointing the blame when people are culpable. It serves no one if everyone shares the blame when individuals are at fault, because the true origin of errors won't be addressed. There's also a difference between criticism and critique. One is negative, the other positive. On Saturday everyone was pretty low-key. Dawson was just key to major setbacks.
Behind the public expressions of calm and 'all's well' on OS, I'm sure Dawson was made aware of any shortcomings - as were the others. Assou-Ekotto had a bad day, but I wouldn't have anticipated it from his pre-season form, in which he was excellent.
Bent got a bit of stick, too, for not scoring. Comparisions are still made between him and Berbatov, they are different types of player. It's like comparing a grenade to a sniper's rifle. Bent is but one of the munitions in the armoury. I wish we could hang on to them both; I wish Berbatov loved the club like I love it; and I wish money grew on trees.
All player and financial donations will be gratefully received.
Did Roma have a 'hose'? Maybe a few players were wearing them... I meant 'house', of course.
Nine_thirty-seven
I know what you mean and where your coming from but I would also like Daws to come out and say "ok. I wasn't good enough. I am frustrates with my performance and I have assured the management and my teammates that I will be running and tackling my bollocks off against sunderland in order to show that I am better than my boro performance suggests"
I'd be much happier seeing something like that! lol
Anyways. I'm off for the evening.

But it's true, I tell you. It's all true. I believe the treatment is to support Queen's Park Rangers, in order to prevent over-excitement and regularise the emotions.
I think the moral of my little anecdote is that football (especially supporting Spurs) can make nearly all of us behave in an irrational manner. Be it ranting on an internet blog or refusing to help an innocent tourist.
9.37 rightly points out that this shows how passionate Spurs fans are towards the club. In my experience the more passionate the fan, the more irrational they're likely to behave.
We all have our opinions, some more valid than others, but to start questioning poster's allegiance to the club (as one or two have done) if you don't like what they write, will only prove divisive.
Call me a cunt, no problem, but I'm definitely nothing other than a Spur.
A brain and two turds go into a pub. The Barman says to the brain, "I'm not serving you, get out!"
The brain asks why and so the Barman replies, "Because you're out of your head and your two mates are steaming!"
why is this post preceded by a pic of Joe Cole holding a tiny woman?
Why do our assistant managers feel the need to patronise our intelligence after every shit performance?
Why do we see the same recycled Jenas quotes after every loss?
Why Dawson? Why? Dawson? why?
TMWNN, yes - we're all Spurs. And here's another - Gus Poyet - providing balance:
"Taking away the positives, we can say that the new boys, especially Gio and Luka, would have learnt a lot from that game. They are quality players so I am sure they will get to grips with the English style of football very quickly.
"We were not the best team in the world after beating Roma 5-0, and we are certainly not the worst now. It's just a football game that didn't go our way, so we need to stay calm and keep believing in ourselves.
"There are always positives and we need to address the negatives, but that's one game and we've got another one now to bounce back."
Cheers, Gus. That'll be a win against Sunderland, then.
'Gus says 'We were rubbish'' wouldn't get past the editing board.
Anyway, if he creates an expectation, then he's expected to meet it. If we don't win I'll be checking myself in for biploar assessment.

Latest ITK drivel just in:
'Been told that Fergie is fuming with the yanks who own the Manure because they wont meet our valuation of Berba and he believes he is being made to look like a ****.pissing myself' (SC/FTL)
Earlier today: 'Again I say that mancs have not increased their bid and show no signs, plus installment terms not applicable, and bonuses building upto extra five million if win this, if win that not to our liking. Barca not in financial position to buy at mo, even at comp fee, and we have excellent relationship with them. My opinion strictly speaking, I don't think he will end up a mancs player for at least a year, that's what inner circles believe. Let's see if they come up with money. "Spurs’ Michael Dawson’s all-round display against Boro made recently departed Younes Kabul look like the reincarnation of Franco Baresi"
Not sure why Daws has struggled to regain the form he showed after first joining Spurs. He has, of course, not had a steady defensive partner, but he has also suffered from a series of injuries ... including a hamstring, ankle and two head injuries. Perhaps the once-reliable aerial wizard has had his brains scrambled?
I know I am going to get shot down in flames.. But.. Dawson in MY opinion can get back to being a good Centre Back, just needs to be on the bench for a while. To say Dawson should not be at Spurs, I think is harsh. Ramos is not a fool and if he thought he was that bad, he wouldn't of been given a new contract.
I agree CB. We need more experienced cover (perhaps something a little younger and more nimble than Naybet this time), but Daws is Spurs. He even captained once in the absence of King and P-S-B. Perhaps he'd benefit from a loan spell?

I dont think everyone is pancicking after one game. Its more frustration as it appears that the same problems that hindered us last season are still occuring despite us going out and overhauling the entire squad.
I hate to bang on about it but...
Totally agree with this!!! We are not panic, just so frustrated!!! The Boro game is the continue of later stage of last season, disjoined, no rhythem, no creativity, no defence. Just speed (and direct run of Jenas then lost the ball).

Get your flame retardant suit on CB.
They signed Les Dawson on to an extended contract, because they know King Ledders has knackered knee. It was desperate and stupid move. Lazy.
I'll admit Dawson looked like he could play well when King was playing consitently beside him, two seasons ago.
One his own, as I gave said many times before on this blog, he is a fucking liability.
We need a solid replacement for King and we need a another CB, are you availble CB?, to cover for the very able but frail/injury prone Woodgate. Dawes will not do. Ship him out.
Ramos, or camolli or Levy or whoever makes the deals these days needs to spend the next week and a half purchasing, at least one centre back like King, a Defensive midfielder like Mascherano and a forward like Carlos Tevez. Then we will be sorted. They have the money. Spend it.
JGM, it's true what you say about the platitudes. I just see it as a kind of bargain: my part of the bargain is to be patronised, and Gus' part is to deliver the winning team he promises.
I'm content to be patronised all season in exchange for great performances, rather than get sub-standard football followed by frank appraisals.
As the season progresses, the less Gus meets his side of the bargain, the more my gripes become legitimate. I hope I don't soon have a bunch of gripes.

The hyperbole surrounding the aftermath of the Boro game has been staggering. Yeah the defence played badly and King and Bale should have played but you can bet that Ramos could see that too.
The reason we played badly is clearly that lack of a holding player. Modric and JJ are not defensive let's face it. Hudd should have played but we need to strengthen there beofer August is out.
Surprising to hear nobody really mentioning Stephen Appiah - available on a free after quitting Fenerbahce and still a good 4-5 years left in him. The guy would provide the perfect balance behind the likes of modric, j2s, Bentley and Lennon (not necessarily all at the same time Juande!)
Cheers for a cracking site Harry.

Be positive
The thing about being a Spurs fan, is we really believe through out the summer we are going make that divide between the top four, challenge for the title and gain entry to the champions league. Every new signing is greated as the best in their position or at least with the potential to be the best. We wind ourselves up into a frenzy, about to take on the world and all of a sudden bloody ugly boy weater and ex yid Mido bring us down to earth.
I mean don't get me wrong, I wouldn't have it any other way, the expectation and anticipation of a new exciting season, I suppose this what makes being a Spurs fan so exciting. However on the down side, we always were going to end up disappointed unless we thrashed the boys on teeside.
I think we all thought a win was going to happen, since we didn't experience that losing feeling in preseason and the way we dispatched Roma was fantastic. Buts lets not lose sight of the positives, the true quality in our team, a bloody good manager and the likelyhood of at least two exciting signings in the next couple of weeks.
The future is bright, the future is liiywhite

In truth we weren't that bad against Boro. But I think the reality of the Premier League hit some of the team hard.
The team selection seemed a bit odd to me but I was actually excited by the prospect of seeing GDS, Bentley & Lennon swapping around and causing havoc in the Boro defence, but it didn't come off.
As for our defence, I think that may have been more of a political selection, intended to prompt Levy to splash the cash in a game that maybe Ramos felt we could afford to lose. What better way to let Levy know that DM and CB are needed than to play a team that leaves gaping holes at the back. Bet he doesn't play the same team against Chelsea.

We would of had some link up play in the middle if Ramos hadn't lost the plot and decided to change the whole formation around and play a different system to the one that saw us play so well in pre-season. Why move J2S out to left wing when all summer he's done so well in behind...
Ted your spot on mate, i think Ramos will look back on that game like jol did when he blew it against chelski and think i f**ked up, lets hope this was a one off but in my humble oppinion the way Ramos let us fall away last season and with him making Jenas captain when he shouldn't even be playing in the premiership is kinda making me wonder if he is that good after all?

There is a problem that no-one has mentioned ie our less than satisfactory transfer performance.
Though we are within 2 weeks of the end of the transfer window it would appear we are still trying to buy players and are short of a central defender a striker and a defensive midfielder. Also, we seem to pay top dollar for almost every player and seem incapable of unearthing any bargains like Santa Cruz and half the Man City players Sven bought.
It's disappointing to say the least that neither, Ramos, Gus or Commolli have unearthed any unknown gems from their own countries.
None of this suggests much planning.
While I sit here gazing vacantly at the screen with nothing between my brain and fingertips except the stultifying fear of what yet another exorbitantly priced assemblage of wannabe's might concoct with the next 37 matches worth of my life's greatest distraction, would somebody mind explaining how 'links' are put in posts.

People forget that Keane and Berbatov played almost as much in midfield as up front.
Berba played in the hole and in midfield at Boro and brought class, compusure, and link up play where it was lacking.
Aside from King (when fit) Berbatov is our only world class player and he performs so many functions that his absence is very damaging to us.
Glad to see Levy sticking to his guns over the transfer fee - we would need a fortune to offset the loss of Berba.

how about J2S?
You have a point though. Juande supposedly wanted his squad fully assembled by the start of pre-season. Although this was difficult due to the euros, he is leaving it bloody late. Maybe he wasn't planning on letting PSB and the sulk go, but he has not addressed the weakness at the back.
One out and 4 in with 13 days to go is a big ask.
Unless Wendy is twice the manager I thought, I'd say that unless we grab a CB & DM with muscle and attitude by the last day in august, we'll be lucky to make top 8. A couple of end of contract oldies but goldies with one or two years left in 'em 'll do.
Pretty please.
The answer is simple. If Man u want berbatov....pay the asking price £30 million pounds. If not they are complete idiots and are making a fool of themselves. That related back to the ronaldo saga. Saying we are not selling him when he did want to leave. Wanting £70 million for him etc. We need a nice new centre half. Corluka is a brilliant singing if we do get him. Sell kevin prince boateng and the other rejects and with some of the money sign Corluka. Our defence is just terrible! Dawson needs to improve. AND IN THAT SUNDERLAND GAME..WHY DIDNT RAMOS JUST FUCKING START BERBATOV! Who cares if he wants to leave..or is that just papers? Theres alot of speculation just like the january transfer window over him. But what happend in january! HE CAME OUT INFRONT OF THE TABLOID AND STATED HE IS A TOTTENHAM PLAYER AND WANTS TO STAY! Either they pay £30 million or piss off! SIMPLE AS!
We will need this startin line up if we would like to win vs sunderland!
Gomes
Zokora/ hutton Huddlestone Woodgate/king Bale
Bentley Modric Jenas Dos santos
Berbatov Bent
As we all do know. Woodgate is excellent and holding the strikers off and huddlestone can clear easily and easily do a long ball to dos santos who can prove width feedin berbatov or bent easily!

Great...Thanks you Russian shit, after reading that its put me off arshavin, would he really be that delighted to join us, I mean the salary would be nice, but would he really burst with pride if he was to walk out at White Hart Lane with the mighty Cockrel on his chest. I don't think he would, but then I suppose that is the way football has gone over the years.
Anyway, lets hope for some genuine transfer news today, wether its us signing someone or confirmation the Bulgarian is fucking off.

Jesus says of Diego Forlan "really, he is not for sale". Praise be!
For £16m maybe worth another go in the EPL, but for £30 as some are reporting...Feck-o Right-o Off-o. Rocky Santa as part of a double swoop? The paper names are getting better than the Ashtons and Ferdinands, but are the press even more stumped than we are when coming up with DMF's and CD's?
Still don't forget Calum Davenport and That's Zamora to add to that list BC.
I'm starting to believe that Daniel 'Different' Levy's and Alex 'Rudolph' Ferguson's stubbornness in the Berbatov fiasco has turned into a personal war of attrition and is holding us back in the transfer market. Not good.
El, cut and paste the web page address into the comments box. It will appear as LINK when submitted.
"Spurs’ Michael Dawson’s all-round display against Boro made recently departed Younes Kabul look like the reincarnation of Franco Baresi"
I think that sufficiently sums up Dawson's performance on saturday! The boy was shit, say no more. I'm moving on from that now.
I like most of other spurs fans are hoping for some transfer action today! I feel that Ramos, Poyet & Levy must have a list of potential targets and after watching saturdays peformance they must see that we need a CB & CDM rather badly. Now, who those lucky 2 men shall be is another story.
I'm hoping that Citeh face up to the fact they're going down the tubes and sell us Corluka and I would like us to go for Johnson of Citeh too. Appiah is available for nothing and I think he is most definitely aviable option. I think we should give up on AA and go back and sign him on the cheap in January once Zenit's position is very weak in this particular transfer saga.
The club need to come out and say to the press and Berbatov, its £30m not a penny less. Make him stay and hopefully call Fergie's bluff.
A cheeky bid for Santa Cruz would IMO help strengthen the side considerably.
Those are my thoughts this very very wet, miserable, despicable morning in sunny glasgow!

Kingyid - although us fans would (as I will again once my new 3rd kit arrives) be bursting out with pride to wear the mighty Spurs Cockerel on our chests, I really doubt that many of todays international signings would.
For some reason, our main foreign fanbase over the years has been Scandinavia (....a quick break to imagine lots of scandi totty wearing spurs shirts....
). These days you can see from all the other pages/blogs that most of africa/asia/middle-east etc like to wear the red of the mancs/arse/pool or support real/barca/milan etc.
Spurs have got a huge fanbase worldwide, and I think you'll find that those that do support spurs whether they have funny Chinese, Danish, or other accents, are the more discerning and loyal, and do so not just because that's who their friends support - but because they feel an affinity for the club, be it for the daring motto, the push and run ethos, the great history, or the potential glory to come.
If Arshavin comes and does great things in the lilywhite, then we'll have lots of Russians growing up to support THFC. It doesn't matter to me whether the players we get in grew up supporting Spurs, or its always been their dream to join Spurs. What does matter is how they perform and that they do it with pride - whether for their own achievements, the teams achievements, or for the club.
Bring on the transfers!

Very true Trembly
Maybe I'm a romantic, who can't seperate his own feelings for Spurs from those lucky enough to play the wonderful game. I just think the whole Arshavin thing is becoming a long drawn out affair and the bloke might not even turn up.
However, there are plenty of players out there who would love to play for Spurs and I hope the ones who arrive?? will do so with determination and pride.
On a side note Gudjohnson (is that how you spell it!!) anybody, he would be bloody fantastic, alright, not blessed with pace, but he has experience and the ability to finish.
If Trappatoni sat next to you at WHL, would you:
1. Shake his hand, and say thanks for the £20.3m?
2. Tell him to Vaffanculo?
3. Welcome him with open arms and ask about PSB?
4. Try and get tickets for Eire v Italy?
5. Ask him politely to let the boys do a job on that moody git in March, by which time he's already left?
Anyone - got any news, please?
Kingyid. At this moment in time, I would say 'I do' to 'Eidur', not that I see him proposing
I feel sorry for Woodgate. He must be gagging to play next to King. If only we could keep those two fit we'd have a brilliant back two IMO only bettered by Vidic and Ferdinand at ManUre.
Unfortunately so far in his spurs career he's been paired with such masters of disaster as Les Dawson, Youmiss Kaball, Didier "the footballing antichrist" Zokora and Tom "ketchup tanker" huddlestone. Woody's frustration is obviously starting to show >>>>
LINK
Now I know I was probably a bit harsh to Hudd and Zokora in my previous paragraph but you have to admit they are not CB's. Hudd if he could put the effort in could be one of the best CM midfielders we've seen at the lane for years, while Zokora's versatility and misplaced desire are very admirable and make him a useful member of the squad (he's kind of like an excitable puppy - he chases everything but is often prone to shitting on the floor or chewing your shoes to bits - if you get my drift?)
Hopefully Ramos, Poyet & Levy are working bllod hard on getting a good quality CB in to ensure that when King or Woody are injured that we have top class cover.
We are obviously a few players sort. If you exclude those unlikely to get any look in this season - Lee, Stalteri, Rocha, Ghaly, Boateng & the 4th choice keeper - we have a squad of only 21 players + youth. That just is not enough and we MUST be buying players to fill the squad, SURELY!!!
What was of equal importance in determining our result at the weekend was the tactics. BAE was poor but he had no cover infront of him. Modric did not help him and neither did Gio. He was exposed and was often over loaded with 2 sometimes 3 attackers. So a bit harsh to criticsie him too much but he also gave the ball away too much.
If we are going to play a narrow three in the middle, we need to have a DM holding behind becuase JJ, Bentley & Modric did little in the way of tackling. No one held properly. I was utterly confused as to why Zak did not hold with Gunter at RB. For an away game vs a powerful and well organised team like Boro, we needed greater steel. To have the players we had in front of the defence we had was just wrong. All of those 7 players are attack minded, in front of a make shift defence, including the hapless Dawson. I blame JR as much as I blame the players for that defeat, for a Master tactician he got that badly wrong.
With Dawson as the only real cover for our CBs, we could be in big trouble. Why did Robbo's very poor performances see him get the boot while Dawson's continual mistakes are rewarded with a new contract. He has ceased to improve, has in fact got worse and needs more coaching/spell in the reserves and we need a quality replacement ASAP.
Article from Sky sports this morning.
Now this is really interesting, the headline states "Roman happy in Russia"
But reading on makes me think he is awaiting an offer before deciding?
"Spartak Moscow striker Roman Pavlyuchenko admits a move to the Premier League would be 'a big problem'.
Pavlyuchenko impressed during Russia's Euro 2008 campaign and has subsequently been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur.
Reports have also suggested other English clubs have shown an interest, but for the time being appears happy to stay in Russia.
"I can't say anything concrete, since I don't really know myself [the situation]," Pavlyuchenko told Sport Express.
"Everything is still being discussed. Maybe Spartak have already made a decision, but I haven't decided one way or the other.
"Moreover, the transfer to England which everyone is talking about, would be a big problem for my family, as we have a young child. So we need to discuss it properly."
Arshavin help
Andrei Arshavin has also been linked with Spurs, but Pavlyuchenko admits his compatriot's presence in England would not necessarily persuade him to change his viewpoint.
He added: "I don't know, because I have never been at a foreign club. You need to try something first in order to know.
"On the one hand, it's easier as a pair, but on the other, alone the situation forces you to get used to new conditions quicker - both language and life.
"Everything will depend on what kind of offer will be made to the club and to me. My move to a top club definitely would reflect well on the image of Spartak.
"I will see what the offer is first, and then bring the whole process to a conclusion."

Great article on the downfall of Manchester Citeh. I think we should forget about Arshavin and go bargain bin shopping at Citeh. Corluka, Onouha, Johnson, Sturridge & maybe Gelson Fernandes would be my choices

JS, I think saying Hudd could be a top CM if he put the effort in is akin to saying Zokora could be one too if he learnt to shoot or Lennon could be a top winger if he learnt to cross.
Someone said on here that top DMs don't really develop until their late 20s, after taking a good few years of bruising that turns them into real hard men.
Maybe that will be the case with Hudd, but in the meantime he just hasn't got that anger/determination in him.
King Yid, reading between the lines, I thought the same thing too.

We appear to be singing from the same hymn sheet!! How and more importantly WHO decided to offer Dawson a new improved contract?? I hope its only so that when we come to sell him that we can command more money.
Dawson has been given too many chances. He didn't even look good in pre-season games! In fact against Norwich we looked better defensively when he went off injured. If King isn't fit for Saturday I would rather see Zokora at CB and Ramos IMO must give Gunter a chance at RB. He looked very good there in pre-season and I'm sure he can make the step up.

I dont think its just the effort Hudd has to show. Players such as Makalele and Alonso are brilliant holding midfielders and they don't hammer it round the midfield like an essien or a roy keane.
Hudd needs to learn about where to best position himself, read the game from that CDM position and be in the right place at the right time to stop attacks. I'm sure he can do that seeing as he reads the attacking part of the game so well.
If he could learn to become more defensive in his mindset and allied that to his wonderful passing skills he could become the fulcrum of the side. Snuffing out attacks and then hitting a defence splitting pass. He's got it in his locker he just needs someone to help him apply it.
Against Sunderland I would like to see O'Hara get a game. His hustle and bustle style, snapping into the oppo's faces will unsettle Sunderland and I don't think anyone can fault his desire. I think he could be the shot in the arm that spurs need.

totally agree BUT i think the best way for him to learn would be for us to get in a old experienced DM for Hudds to learn from over the next season or 2. I saw Albeda mentioned earlier in the summer, this is the sort of player i am thinking about. we need more experience throughout the team, especially in the midfield where there is very little. Our approach of buying young potenital is commendable but if we do not replace the lost experience (Keane/davids/lee etc) then we will never progress

My preference would be for Appiah. Especially as he's available on a free. I think Appiah's experience or talent cannot be faltered and he also has an air of leadership about him (Ghana actually gave up a place on their ANC squad so that an injured Appiah could be on the bench for the tournament!)I'm sure Hudd could learn immeasurably from him.
On another note.... saw these on the bbcsport website and thought a) what a bitter delusional wa*ker Wenger is & b) what a wan*er wenger is!! >>
We won the trophy for the most unlucky team last year. Is it a trophy to finish 12th and win the Carling Cup? The real quality of a big club is to fight for the championship."
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is confident his team will challenge for the title and even manages a dig at north London rivals Tottenham in the process.
"We finished with 83 points, anywhere else we would have won the championship."
Wenger on last season's campaign. Yes, Arsene, Arsenal would have won the title anywhere else - apart from Serie A (Inter Milan, 85 points) and La Liga (Real Madrid, 85 points).
I just want to know why that stiff in midfield we call jenas is fcuking captain ffs!!! get the plum out and get in a decent defensive midfielder so modric and weave his magic further up the bloody pitch. oh and while we are at it, why don't we play gunter at rb till hutton is back? bale and king on the bench and whats with bentley on the left ffs.!!!! major fcuk ups against bro, hope we sort it out for sunderland!!!
don't worry about wen*er i'm suprised he has time to talk about other teams, i thought he was too busy grooming his kids into proper players!!! with the emphisis on grooming!!!!
If, as is likely, we're going to play with two holding midfielders, I think one has to be the destroyer (O'Hara is the closest thing we have) sitting in front of the back four winning tackles with the other collecting the ball and play making.
We have Modric or Hudd, who could be the play maker half of that duo. Surely there must be an available player out there that can get stuck in to play the destroyer half.
What the fuck are the scouts doing?
If one doesn't come in before the window closes.........

I know Spurs Si sounds defeatist, however ask yourszelf this, do we look any more likely to keep clean sheets then we've done in the last 6 or so years (I would say no). We've improved the creativity in midfield but now have only two strikers, one of whom wants to leave. Are we any nearer to acheiving greatness?
The guy seems to give an honest appriasal.
On the other hand three quality signings in the next two weeks (CB, CDM & CF) and I'm sure we'll all be feeling a lot more confident.
I think if we'd have gone to Boro and lost to a bit of magic or a lucky goal then I wouldn't feel so downbeat. We were beaten by an average team who worked harder, we gave goals away from poor defending (very avoidable and very Spurs 2007!) and the lucky goal was ours as we barely created a chance to write home about!
3 new players, please, please, please (& no more lightweight, creative types for midfield we need some grit!)
I just read back my post. Disgusting is a bit of a strong word. its like if you call someone a fecker thats not as bad as if you call someone a cnut. In no way and I qualified to question the level of support that someone had for the club and so I, cap in hand, apologise for the inference and my use of the D word.
However I do maintain that defeatism leaves a stink unlike other negative emotions such as sorrow and anger. Defeatism gives up even when there is still a fight on. This is why deserters, who ran away rather than fight for the greater good, were summarily shot when caught.
Worse/not any better than 6 years ago are we? I'm sorry, but although we haven't come off the blocks like Linford Christie on steroids, there is no way that we can be compared with 'six years ago'.
It was just over 6 years ago when I bumped into Chris Armstrong in a barbers in Hampstead. I didn't berate his lack of goals, nor did I volley him with abuse. the reason? Its because I was realistic enough to know that at the time, we didn't have a team capable of achieving much - expectations weren't high. But over the past six years, through the Hoddle, Santini, Jol era's you've got to admit we've gotten better. More tv money, more sponsorship money, bigger kit deals, tastier names being linked and realistically attainable.
I've not lost my grasp of reality, and I may err towards optimism until such time tells me quite categorically that we're out of the races, but there is no way I can just stand by when uncalled for defeatism rears its head. Hand me my gun, I'm a shooting deserters.
Otherwise, Im in agreement. Call in the cavalry! Or just 3 feckin hard mofos.
I might cause a little controversy with the next few sentences so apologies in advance.
I don't think we need to sign anyone!
Please let me explain....
1.Modric and Dos Santos, both very new to the Premier league and will take a moment to get used to the pace. I n flashes I thought both looked very good against Boro.
2.All the attacks that created chances against us came from hitting us on the break(or when we chased the game) or set pieces.
3. There wasn't enough urgency about our play.
Number 1 says to me it will take a couple of games to get the best out of our new players. Buying further new players would simply make it take longer. Berba was pretty shite until an away goal in Europe started to bring him to life.
2. BAE got caught out by balls over the top of him all day. Also when we pushed up as a team, their turkish lad dropped into the hole ( again usually against BAE) and claimed the ball. One on one he is obviously gonna be a handful and caused us problems all afternoon. Zokora didn't always track back. Players need to man mark better or in the case of BAE not get caught out by simple over the top balls. Most of these if not all occurred on our left side.
3.We seemed far too casual. This meant Boro had the chance to up the pace when in attack and our boys were not mentally ready for that. This is purely down to the management and I think we may have been a little nervous and felt the pressure. Remember we have quite a young midfield.. average age 22... Jenas is the old man. Zokora would play well behind modric and jenas.
All in all I see our problems as something the management can sort with the players we have already. We need to employ Zokora more often as a defensive midfielder, especially away from home. Bale really does need to play left back. We need to up our tempo. finally we need to allow our players to settle to the pace.
Further more possession was dominated by us.
supposed to be "in no way am I qualified". oops. PS this will be my last rallying call - expect no more calls for "chin up" from me. I'm worried that gramophone has worn itself out.
PPS I think I've got a thing for defeatism like Jamiespurs has for Dawson!

It is partly true what you have said, but the reaction we are seeing is because we lost one bloody game away from home. I know you will say, its a lot deeper than that, but if we had beat Boro by two or three goals to nil, we would all be sitting crowing about how good we are and what we are going to achieve this season. I doubt we would be having a go at Dawson or desperatly going on about what positions need filling.

Hey Harry or anyone else for that matter... Do you know or have am approximate of the running cost of the Academy ?
The academy employs a large number of people both full and part time. The training ground is on prime land too. I ask because we dont seem to produce players that make the step up to the 1st team. Recent years have seen the most promising go on loan to toehr clubs and subsequently get sold on or let go.
My view is. Why not scrap the academy and just run an U18 and reserves side. Most if not the youngsters we do intend for the 1st team we buy in from elsewhere around the globe. The expense running the academy could potentially be used in the transfer market. Lets do what we do and allow other clubs to do the groundwork and then take them when the job of training is done....
You've got to be thinking that we will sign 1 if not 2 more key players before the window closes. Ramos said himself that he was working on 1 or 2 deals. I do think we need another striker in the form of a target man i.e a kanoute/crouch figure.

We're better than six years ago, agreed. What I was trying to convey was that apart from a few months under 'man in the raincoat' the last time I had confidence in keeping us clean sheets Richard Gough was playing for us!
The thing that frustrates me most is that for the last couple of years or so we've been able to score goals with regularity. Each transfer window passes and we buy attacking players (apart from in Jan). I had a real good feeling when we brought in Woodgate & Hutton because it appeared we finally had someone in charge who could see what is an age old Spurs problem of playing good football but who couldn't stop em.
What's happened this transfer window is that all the players we've brought in are all forward thinking players. We were pretty good going forward anyway, not to say we havn't improved in this area but in my opinion if we'd have kept the same squad as last year (apart from Robbo!) and spent the £40m we've spent on a pair of worldclass defenders and a quality destoryer type in midfield we could realisiticlly challenged the top teams. As it stands I think we'll do ok but we will still conced too many to get into the top tier of the EPL.
I woke up to news of us signing Modric (and J2S to a lesser extent) and was over the moon. It was almost like when I was on holiday a few years back and went to buy a newspaper everyday. I kept picking it up to find pics of Jurgen and Dumi wearing Spurs shirts, I was really excited for the season to start (in fact I almost creamed my pants). However in my heart of hearts I knew with our defence we'd never truly challenge. I have a feeling of Deja vu!
There's still time brothers, still time
There is still time and we know how we do our business best. Behind closed doors. Wouldn't suprise me if we sign someone like berba, an unknown gem.
f King had partnered Woody we still would have lost, COS THEY DON'T GET ANY PROTECTION FROM THE MIDFIELD. Les was not the worst player on the pitch, that accolade can go to Modric, however this was his first game and he is not a holding midfielder. The big picture is this, because of the protracted sale of Berbatov Ramos has been left in a state of limbo, he knows we need protection in midfield however his efforts will be consigned to signing a forward. As the funds can't be released yet this will leave limited time to sign a forward before the window closes and no time to sign a quality holding midfielder. The real culprit in all of this is Levy. He is similar to a NHS manger, given ample sums of money but wasted on pointless exercises. I believe that Levy does not want to harm the club, after all he has an investment in it. However he is another chairman without out a clear, solid, simple plan of how to achieve success, he acts on a whim without thinking of the consequences and therefore blights his own investment as no profitable investment from outside of the club will be made unless champions league football is assured.
Is anything happening on the transfer front, for christ sakes, where are the ITK's when you need them, somebody make something up, I need a fix.

If King had partnered Woody, who really knows what would have happened? Although Jamiespurs has been rather over zealous with his vendetta against Dawson, I have to agree with him that ultimately, for all 3 goals, it was Dawsons fault.
Having been lucky enough to 'enjoy' a second showing of the entire match, with slow-mo's of the main incidents, Dawsons errors and poor reading of the game was key. I never noticed it the first time, but after Jamies protests, I kept my eye on Daws, and he actually was guilty of ball-watching and wasn't aware enough of the people/area that he was marking.
I won't bother with your attack on Levy, I'll let his wallet do the talking over the next week.

Dawson didn't do his job. He let David Wheater past him and then grabbed his shirt on the first goal (which should not have been disallowed IMO). Wheater was also left open to hit the rebound on the first allowed goal. Dawson was then the last man who let Mido get open on the second goal.
I agree with you, however, he was not the worst man on the pitch. Ekotto was. He passed the ball to them at least twice. Watched as the ball sailed over his head and kept leaving the left open to attack. He was replaced by bale, but not soon enough.
Or was it O'Hara? I think Bale actually came on for lennon.

Let hope not eh!!!!
Shelfside, much as I like his work, do you not think it would be (potentially embarrassing) folly for us to pursue the (newly installed) captain of a Champions League regular, in Huntelaar's case Ajax; Particularly when the player in question has reportedly also described a move to Man United as 'a dream'? No doubt the Daily Mail would enjoy the 'Spurs snubbed' headlines though.
In any event Levy and Co. have surely already been working on alternatives (to Keane/Arshavin/Berbatov) and further summer (not January, please God) transfer window signings.
I read, however, that some ITKs are claiming Berbatov's un/likely transfer is causing Ferguson anxiety and frustration; Shame. His irritation, it has been mooted, is as much the result of a lack of currently available funds (courtesy of the Glaziers) as it is the clubs’ continued mutually brinks-man-like tactics.
Anyone else feel that despite Zenit's protestations the Arshavin deal is not dead, yet? Simply their chairman is as stubborn as ours and both are playing (an oh so boring) media game.
HH, are you enjoying your hols per chance?

What If we sign a striker who is not from S. America, Spain or Italy and who is younger than 21 or older than 23? If train A leaves Aberdeen traveling 100MPH and train B leaves Bristol traveling 150MPH and the distance between the two cites is 415 miles how far from Doncaster will it be when the two trains meet?

Talking of midfielders who have off-days - such as ours - Gerrard is off just as much as he's on. He's off tonight. He smells of eggs. Or maybe it's just those eggs Spurs put in the one basket I can smell. The ones that aren't going to hatch.

So gareth made is team play with loads of energy soak up the pressure give them the ball and hit them on the brake. i can hear you spurs fans saying yes but in the end class always tells and energy will run out surly they cant keep that up for 90 mins well they did and so will sunderland and wigan and blacburn and all of them are ex players. the answer is there harry in clas doesent tell anymore

Totally agree. The england side are a disgrace and by Capello making that dog Terry captain he's made it even worse!
I don't care if england win lose or draw. I had a good experience supporting Croatia throughout Euro2008 and to be honest I think I may just support them when they play england! Modric will once again make England' much vaulted midfield look shit.

If King had partnered Woody, who really knows what would have happened? Although Jamiespurs has been rather over zealous with his vendetta against Dawson, I have to agree with him that ultimately, for all 3 goals, it was Dawsons fault.
Having been lucky enough to...
Trembly,
I'm glad I have made someone see the light! I have watched the highlights 3 times now (i dont know why but sometimes SKY+ is a bastard) I think far too many spurs fans remember Dawson's promising early Tottenham career and still give him merit on those performances. Completely forgetting that the bloke cant mark, cant read the game, cant pass the ball over short distances and has the attention span of a goldfish!! In short he's a liability and a player who should be nowhere near the starting 11 of a club that aspires to champs league football.
He should be dropped to the reserves and told to sort himself out or forget playin for the spurs 1st team again!!
I was already pissed off with the Arshavin deal being (allegedly) off. I chose not to watch last night as I'm sick of the same old gash. Even we (Spurs) are good in friendlies.
Apart from looking like an expensively dressed Postman Pat, what exactly does Capello do to earn his £6 Million a year?

I have made a pact to not watch an England game while John Terry is captain, but I heard we were shit, everyone was played out of position and we could barely string 3 passes together. Same old England then. There is another reason that I wont be watching this current regime, Capello picked Heskey over Bent. What the f*ck is that all about?
PLN
I agree i think quite alot of england fans will not watch while that pleb is captain! What a terrible choice. Its almost like Capello wants everyone to dislike him!
Another reason I wont be watching England is team selection. I like Beckham I think he's been a terrific servant to the game but when will capello realise that Beckham isn't that good anymore!!! Bentley is sitting on the bench. Bentley is more dynamic than Beckham and his free kicks and delivery are starting to become as good as Beckhams. So why not give Bentley a go?? Especially seeing as Beckham will be long past it when the next world cup comes round! And the Heskey over Bent situation well...... that just about sums it up!
I'm not saying anymore on England. My mind is fully focused on saturday's game and the hope that Sunderland will be on the end of a good and thorough beating!!
I'm a bit gutted to be honest, I wanted to go, but I'm away this weekend. Shame Teemu is out, but I'm sure Steed will get a good reception, not sure about Chimbonkers though!
Rumours of Berbatov signing a Man U shirt today...... other rumours suggest it was actually the Red Bulgarian shirt.... Either way, I don't see to much of a problem with it to be honest, if someone wants a Man U shirt with his signature on it thats fine with me. I'm sure I'd have been the same had I seen Bentley during that ongoing transfer saga. Who by the way, is a bloody nice bloke who my nephew had a chat with after the Roma game.
haha, that 'sunsport world exclusive' about dimi signing a utd shirt did make me laugh this morning, as soon as i saw it i knew that it would have just been a bulgaria shirt, and on close inspection, it was!

Stephen - those pics can be easily photoshop'ed. I don't know enough about the difference between the two shirts to be able to say otherwise.
PLN - thesun.co.uk front page. they've even got a couple of close up pics, which again are simple enough for anyone with a home pc to do.
Regardless of whether he did it or not, he might end up staying if Rudolph doesn't cough up. Berbs, Sign whatever shirt you want - as long as its in exchange for £30m or thereabouts.
egg all over my face, it is actually a united shirt. was just looking for the link for PLN, found it on www.thesun.co.uk, and it is 100% a united shirt. woops
Ref England game. Personally, I couldn't care less that Bent and Bentley weren't playing for England last night. A meaningless friendly where the cream of Englands overpaid arrogance were made to look like donkeys.
I'm a big England fan and admit to getting slightly arsy when it comes to the World Cup and the Euros. However, I would rather that Spurs players stayed injury free during the whole season - and not playing useless internationals only helps them stay injury free, especially as we want a decent run this year.
For a laugh, I flicked over to Germany v Belgium. The second goal by the Karuts was sublime. A combination of Philip Lahm and some bloke called Marin. Both were just over 5 ft 6! Had me dreaming of Gio and Luka comibing to that effect for us.

You do get the opinion that Bentley is pleased as punch to be at Spurs. Its nice to see a player actually beaming with pride to be at a club. I think he's going to become a great player for us.
I hope so anyways as he's in all my fantasy football teams!!
Trembly
"Berbs, Sign whatever shirt you want - as long as its in exchange for £30m or thereabouts."
Completely agree. Admittedly If Berba did sign that shirt in the knowledge it was a Manure shirt then he's a disgrace. However, why should we care? He's signed a contract to play for Tottenham and unless someone stumps us £30m then he's staying put. It will be interesting to see if Ramos starts him on saturday and if Berba does play what reception he'll get. Personally I'm thinking we should give him a brilliant reception and make him think about what a prick he's been. Not that he cares probably!
Jamie - not sure that dropping Daws into the reserves would help. We do after all want him to:
a. regain the form he had 2 years ago, and
b. learn from better players like woody and king
Getting him hungry for a game could be done just by leaving him on the bench for a long while and just giving 5 mins here and there. It works for any players who want to play. The problem there is the danger of 'cutting ones nose off to spite the face' - unless we soon get an alternative starting centre half in, or a 3rd choice behind a fit King and Woody.
PS. Watched a bit again this morning, just before the first goal - he made a fantastic headed clearance when Gomes could have been stranded.
"we should give him a brilliant reception and make him think about what a prick he's been. Not that he cares probably!"
Jamie, It's all about performance on the pitch for me. We know we're not going to get the best out of him now his minds on manure. Until he does leave, we've just got to hope he's got enough pride in himself not to have a shit game. I doubt that anything us fans do from here on in will do anything to change his mind - great reception or not - but yours is a nice karma approach
Again about the signing. It's not as if he did a Joey Barton, or did a Judas. Play a stormer and all is forgiven - simple as.

I know the header your talking about but IMO Gomes would of had that cross. Gomes was coming out full pelt and he would of got there before Tuncay. Besides he was STILL AT FAULT FOR ALL 3 goals!!
Its kind of like me nearly breaking something one minute then when i eventually break it 5mins down the line turning round and saying "well i didnt break it the first time" It doesnt change that i broke it (if you get what i mean??)
Dawson doesnt strike me as the sort of player that will give up if we drop him to the bench or the reserves. I cant fault his attitude, its only his talent or defensive nous thats in question.
If we dropped him to the ressies then he would probably be quite upset, but imagine if during that upset someone like poyet came to him and explained why he had been dropped, where he needed to improve. Maybe he would see whats going wrong in his game and I'm sure he would come back stronger. IMO he still isn't good enough for a team with ambitions such as ours.
He's just too much of a liablility and as such I really hope Ramos has the balls and the nous to drop him to the bench on saturday. Play Gunter at RB and Zokora at CB (if king isn't fit!)
I cant believe I actually want to see kokozoks in CB! Have things really come to this???
Just seen this and I for one would be very pleased if we signed this guy. He's gone about his business in the prem very quietly and is a rather good footballer IMO!
LINK
This site has been bang on the money before when Spurs signed Chimbonda from wigan so i think this could have some legs. Palacios is a fine holding midfield player with a season of prem experience under his belt and I think he would improve our midfield without a shadow of a doubt. Think - Zokora with a footallers brain!

Don't get me wrong, he needs to buck his ideas up, but the manager picks him.
If a decent CB, DM and a striker isn't signed by the end of the transfer window, then will be the time to let rip.
I still think we'll sign at least three more players.

He's needed to buck his ideas up for the last 18months. Why do we constantly put up with players who are putting in shit performances?? Its all very well harking back to the good old days when Dawson actually looked good but when was the last time he played that well?? I can't remember that time actually!! (answers on a postcard!)
Dawson is the archetypal, pipe and slippers player. He tried his nuts off when he joined and almost made himself irreplacable. Once he'd done this he put his feet up, got cosy by the fire and BOOM pipe & slippers!! He needs some serious shock tactics to get him into shape so that we can sell him to the highest bidder next season!
Trembly - my karma approach comes from watching far too much "my name is earl" Lets hope Berba's a fan too! lol
Harry, how is the weather in St Petersburg? I've been looking for you here LINK but the action is about as slow as Robbo coming for a cross.
Give us a wave to let us know you've signed Andrey.
Cant take this any more, why does nothing appear to be happening in the transfer market? I know Levy and co work best behind closed doors, and usually when it goes this quiet they spring a surprise like Modric, but that does not help the fact that I am EXTREMELY BORED!!
To keep myself amused at work, I have been trying to think of a worst spurs XI in my living memory, starting circa 1993. Not only does this pass the time, but also makes me feel a lot better about our current situation and crop of players. anyone wanna chip in with a worst Spurs XI?
Stephen
theres been far too many terrible players over the last 15yrs to actually single out 11!!
I thought Les would've been first on the team sheet JS.
He's right about how quiet it's gone though. Come on Levy boy, do us proud.

What's available in the January transfer window that isn't available now? Woodgates aren't ten a penny.
Are Spurs keeping their cards so close to their chest because thwy have a weak hand? Does it contain jokers?
If, with sales balanced against purchases, our actual current outlay is approximately £1 mil, then there should be a hefty kitty to dip into still.
But two weeks is not much time to inititate and complete big-name signings. It's approaching bargain-basement time, when you buy something because it's cheap - even though it's not really what you're looking for, it doesn't quite fit and you'll probably never like it very much.
Can you confirm if Anton Ferdinand and Veloso deals are just paper talk Harry?
