Teddy Offered Assistant Role While Sherwood Dawdles

Tuesday, 28 October 08, 10:03 AM · Comments (132)

News just in from several eyes and ears around The Lane this morning now that erstwhile Tottingham Hotspur darling Teddy Sheringham has been spotted... being courted for a position in 'Arry's coaching cartel.

If he were to to oblige and mutter the immortal words, 'Yes 'Arry.' he would join ex Fratton Park man Kevin Bond who joined us yesterday.

The situation as I understand it is that universally unpopular Tim Sherwood is still 'considering' initial overtures from our new band leader, Redschnapps.

"It has been very flattering to be linked with the club," said Sherwood. And we'd be flattered if you said no, Timmy.

Difficult to know what to think. Presumably Teddy has been accumulating the required badges. Experience? Only with some great managers and some exotic birds - this won't guarantee he's a great coach, however it would probably edge Sir Les out the frame.

:D It would be fantastic to see Teddy back at the lane, he was one of the most clever players I have
seen.Good luck to Harry and the boys, onwards and upwards.COYS

playing under clough, graham, venables, redknapp and ferguson he MUST have picked up something, surely?!!

would be more than welcome if you ask me.....all ferguson's ex-players/now managers have had some degree of success with coaching....add the considerable weight of experience of some of the best managers this country has ever seen....and if you had to put your money on any ex-player to succeed, surely it'd be teddy

Yes please to teddy! i think the english boys in the side will have the same respect for him as all of us, some with memories of his best days. I cant see him being unsuccessful, after all he was great tactically, a very clever player who I believe will make an excellent coach! Tim fucking sherwood on the other hand is so negative, i cant possibly see him being a good influence, and he was hardly a great player. Maybe a job at blackburn is more his cup of tea. some people actually may have liked him there!

hi guys, was just wondering if you think this little gem of a player will finally get the chance he deserves to become the player he has the potential to be? yes sometimes he is a little bit greedy, but i would much rather see that then a player like jenas, who never takes responsibility and always palms the ball off onto someone else so he doesnt have to create, even if that person is in a tighter, less beneficial position. Adel has a little bit of a Joe Cole look to him, and i think Harry will be licking his lips at the prospect of letting him express himself. could be our answer for the left wing or even playing slightly off of a striker. had a gut feeling that harry would like him and low and behold, 1 day into the job he gives him a squad number. n e thoughts on this?

I like the thought of ex-players coming into the management team, but in all honesty I don't care overly. For me if they do a good job I'll appreciate them (ex-goons included).

I think Teddy and Sherwood would both be good for spurs.I liked Sherwood when he was at the lane and hope he may be able give Jenas,Thudd a bit of bite it is an area what really needs sorting at spurs. As for Teddy what can you say yes please Teddy come back.

I agree 100%, I (and I think the majority of us fans) don't mind it when a player gives away possession by trying to beat a man or create a chance out of nothing because sooner or later it will come off and I think Taarabt has that ability.

Teddy? No thanks. He may have been a 'visionary' footballer and great for us in his day, but he's as articulate as a tree and thus wouldn't be able to get his point across. Thick as shite too.

Finally, we are awake again! The difference of having 'Arry on the bench was obvious for all to see. I hope Teddy gets the nod over Sherwood, but the most important point is, we are at last playing football! Tomorrow is a game we are all relishing. As long as we remember there is still work in progress! COYS!!!

Sherwood - no
Teddy - never
Jamiespurs - he would upset too many with his bad language

The man we need is Nutty Naylor, the finest full-back to ever wear the Spurs shirt despite having no talent whatsoever.

Have to agree with Denboy, and totally disagree with Darren and Jay. Despite his ridiculous handball against Pompey, Jenas has been our outstanding player all season. Why do so many coaches rate him? Because he's a f**kin good footballer. Try watching more than the MOTD highlights and look at this workrate and quality through unbiased eyes.

in response to Denboy

any individual person can have a good one off game but i like to look at the bigger picture mate, and dont rate jenas in the slightest. all he seems to do is pass backwards and sideways and one the rare occasion that he does pass foward, its into a player with his back to goal, with a defender up his arse. jenas has always been a player touted as having 'potential' but for me never warrants his starting place, week in week out when players who gave us so much more like malbranque, were subbed at the drop of a hat for not performing. jenas is overrated and having a run, every other game is mediocre for a player playig for my beloved tottenham. he should be an attacking midfielder, but far too often runs when running isnt needed and gets spotted trotting on the halfway line when we r needing him having a late, into the box surge like poyet used to. hes a fake who points to 'opta' stats of passes completed in my eyes. taarabt should get nurtured into using his skills efficiently and in my opinion should have been encouraged as opposed to banished without a squad number

mabbsy mate, the lack of wanting is what bothers me about jenas, he struts around like hes cantona, but performs like a can of tuna!!! when ramos first came in he was surging into the box, showing initiative and guile and popping up with attacking midfield runs. once he was comfortable under ramos, he reverted back to the same lacklustre jenas who never ever warranted that armband. sadly, i think the only way jenas is ever going 2 reach his full potential is if u have a top class sub waiting in the wings, keeping him on his toes. very similar to how robbie keane finally became consistent knowing defoe was on the bench ready to take his starting place. jenas is a prima donna and i'd take a centre midfield of modric and diarra n e day of the week. jenas kinda reminds me of nigel reo cocker, thought he was good enough for the big 4 but ended up a basic villa player, not a key one

I am not meaning Taabart to replace Jenas and not knocking Jenas at all for me the whole team has let the fans down not one individual.I am trying to say that he was very good on Sunday but does tend to not follow it up in the next game.At the minute he is in the side as their is no real competitionfor him no one to challenge to keep him playing at that level.

I have to whole heartedly agree with you. It will probably only be this once. But Naylor was a maniac. Great to have on your side and a nightmare to play against. I'm surprised a decent upstanding pillar like yourself would advocate such a nut job as Nutty Naylor, but good on you for drawing on a terrace legend.

Did you see Maxi Miller interview before the Bolton game? Another very average player who would run through brick walls for Spurs. Put him next to Robberts and it was carnage. A legend.

Can't believe we're having the age old Jenas debate but I brought it on so here goes...

Point taken. I've watched him throughout his Spurs career at close quarters and agree his form can be infuriating at times blah blah blah. My opinions are based on this season alone, let bygones be bygones. Who has he had moving in front of him all season? Bent (who I like) was running down blind alleys and no one from the mid was prepared to gamble through fear of f**kin up and getting the crowd on their back (Bentley and Modric most noteably), so is it any surprise that he looks to always be passing sideways? He's not a Tardbat (sp) who will beat 4 people, but i've seen him get so frustrated by the lack of forward movement this year that he's had a go, and got barracked when it didn't work. Pav only came alive on sunday so i'll leave him out of it. Jenas is however the sole reason we didn't have 0 points from 8 games. His drive and guile was the only thing that kept the Villa score respectable, he offered incredible stability across the middle at Chelsea, and the only reason we kept a clean sheet against wigan. I do wish he'd stop rallying the troops in the press (it gets embarrasing after a while) but he has been the only player who gave it his all this season, no matter how hopeless everyone else was.

He has been proud to play in a Spurs shirt every time he's taken to the pitch and exactly the kind of player and person who will always get my support. He definitely hasn't ever looked like he thinks he's cantona, he's just got on with what he's paid to do and (dare I say it) fulfilled his captains role.

Now where is that link to the JJ fanclub...

Anyone know what the GK coach situation is? I cant remember names, but didnt we sign someone in the summer? No word of him going in teh management clear out.
Not sure about all the abuse being aimed at Sherwood. He's been negative about us on Setanta, but can you blame him? we've been pure shit, he's telling it like it is, not speaking through SPurs tinted glasses and trying to cover up our uselessness. If Harry Redknapp thinks Sherwood would be a plus due to his extensive knowledge of football, then who are we to argue?
Now, Teddy having striker coaching, Sherwood midfield. Is Joe Jordan a fitness coach? Can he look after the defenders, or can we expect to see Gary Mabbutt brought in in this capacity? I hope explayers is the way to go, could be risky!

so, you raise my Nutty Naylor with a Maxi Miller in our game of Spurs Legends who were all heart but with limited talent. Not sure if I can trump you on this one but how about John Pratt. I remember Keith the Burk being on a radio phone-in and one of the callers asking why the hell he kept picking the Pratt. The Burk said the Pratt was 100% committed, could head, could shoot, and could tackle, but alas had to admit that he couldn't pass a ball to save his life - sounds a bit like a poor man's Jenas.

Don't agree. My point - Modric was playing further up front and Janas was doing the work behind him. So he lost the ball on occasions, but he damn well worked to get it back!

No, surprisingly, I'm not an international coach which is a mystery to me. But my eyesight is quite good and I have seen most of Spurs matches this season.

He was closing down and running around in the first half but his passing was pretty poor. In the second half he vanished and Bolton came on to us more.

He has for many years been rated an excellent prospect by all and sundry, he is very athletic, skilful has a decent shot on him and is not lacking in pace, I seem to remember him absolutely skinning Ashley Cole last season. People like Bobby Robson will tell you the boy has got it all. In the 5-1 against the goons he was awesome the trouble is he only produces that every now and then.

He also never steps up when we are up against it, he's no man in a crisis.

It's time he became a consistent performer instead of a consistent enigma.

I just think it's hard for anyone of us to know whether someone like Teddy even though a terrific player who used his head will make a good coach.

But one 'Arry's strengths is being a good judge of players and coaches so I think we are safe in leaving that to him.

Strange he's not tempted to have any continental coaches.

Maybe he will if he has a player like Modric in front of him.
Should both play in their favourite positions we may have the makings.
I worry we will miss his mobility if he is dropped - tho' some wish he was. We lost Steed and Tainio and gained Jaimie, Modric and Hudd as the middle options. All different paced players. Jenas is the man who has to set the tempo. Perhaps now it will be him and Modric. Not Jamie or Hudd. With only one outlet down the middle - Bent - Jenas has had a ridiculouly hard job. Hopefully, with two running wide and Modric playing behind Pav/Bent he will have more options.
I'll eat my words if he doesn't play well under Harry. Promise.

I worry we will miss his mobility if he is dropped - tho' some wish he was. We lost Steed and Tainio and gained Jaimie, Modric and Hudd as the middle...

The problem is that JJ is not a defensive midfielder (so far !) and Modric plays in JJ's best position which is playing high up the field linking with the forwards. So Jermain needs to become more of the all round midfielder he sometimes threatens to be.

The main question is how long do we wait ?

Harry. I love the synchronicity of you both being Harolds.

That's a good omen if you ask me.

And if it doesn't pan out, you can hand us both over to some Borneo Headhunters and get us crafted into a set of unpleasant looking earings :D

I could do with a new pair

How many coaches does Harry want?
What with Bond, Sherwood, Sheringham, Ferdinand, 7 subs and the physios...we are gonna need a bigger bench!

He was feeding Modric. Leave Jenas alone. You single players out for criticism and won't budge week in, week out!
You an international coach or something?
How come so many like him to do the unpopular job in midfield - running, closing down - often looking lost because...

No, surprisingly, I'm not an international coach which is a mystery to me. But my eyesight is quite good and I have seen most of Spurs matches this season.

He was closing down and running around in the first half but his passing was pretty poor. In the second half he vanished and Bolton...

Until we get a decent Defensive M/F to play alongside. Diarra?

I would like to see a two man strike force employed with Modric and Taarabt featured in the in the middle of an attacking midfield.

I would also like a Mojito and Cohiba.

bring it on BC...that would make for one hell of a spectacle at the emirates...where i also here they do a good cocktail... ;)

Jenus has got an engine, Sandbank Arry just has to coach the guy, once jenus is told sort it out or someone else will come in then we'll see him do the business or be a squad player.
Remember we havent replaced Carrick, Jenus has been stuck trying to do 2 jobs, attacking and deffending as our real problem is no deffensive midfielder thats why the one player we should steal from Pompey is DIARRA, and him alone.
I'd like to see Arry actualy coach the footballers, we let far to many come and go, whatever happened to coaching the players, giving them confidence.
if we can sign Diarra and a striker in january id be happy, then we can add players in the summer, but not a total overhall, our midfield will come good when we add cutting edge strikers that we had last year, along with Diarra we will come good again.

Don't know what everyone else things but there seems to be a lot of Defoe in vibes. Personally I thought he was young enough to become a legend and possibly break Chiv or Greaves scoring record, not to be. His first few months he was immense. After which we signed him to a big money deal and he was fairly gash from there on in. Every time I watch him for England I think, very average. As such he can stay at Pompey for me - there's better out there.

Welcome. Don't lend anyone any money.

I think the problem with Roberts may be perception. He's seen as this mighty figure and so he could be a force for good. However, some would be wary of anyone 'mighty' and feel he may cause problems.

'Arry is undoubtedly surrounding himself with men who he can trust. Not to say anyone that isn't selected is in anyway untrustworthy, rather he's assembling his generals and 'Arry knows whoever he picks... it's going to be all down to him.

I wish to protest in the strongest possible terms against one of your posters (a Mr Doublevision ) displaying a picture of my grand daughter as his motif.

As you well know from various conversations we have had together in the Mare Street Hackney Steam Rooms, photographs of my grandaughter Fifi Clitzobelle are not allowed on public display without explicit permission and a huge wad of fifties.

I trust this matter will be dealt with in your usual efficient and sympathetic manner.

Nothing to do with me. I have looked on Odious a few times but it's pretty dull.

As we didn't have a sending off against the trotters, i think we're due one. Hossam Ghastly in the 47th minute, after which he sets fire to his shirt and we win 3-1. 8O LINK

Jenas is a pile of pig spunk. I've never seen a more overrated player in all my days. He has no idea how to play his position. On Sunday was once again crap but actually DID 'cover every blade of grass', something he is often said to do (but has rarely) even though we have been cakewalk down the middle since Carrick and Davids left. Now, there were two real players. Zok and JJ are a bad joke. They are poor on the ball, can't read the game, switch off, do the wrong thing at the wrong time, have zero presence, neither can tackle, and neither have any impact on passing the ball, controlling the game and creating great build up. Jenas scores the odd goal but who gives a shit, do your real job first, that is only a bonus. The best two cms in the world don't have any great goal record to speak of, Xavi and Fabregas. It's only icing. The priority in January is getting some kind of central midfield. It's beyond me why O'Hara isn't playing, he's got ability, tries to do the right things and has heart. Maybe Harry can get Jenas playing but I doubt it will last even if he does. There's something wrong upstairs with the lad unfortunately, no brains or backbone what so ever. Please take the armband and give it to Woody or a fit King.

Dear Sir Harold.

I wish to protest in the strongest possible terms against one of your posters (a Mr Doublevision ) displaying a picture of my grand daughter as his motif.

As you well know from various conversations we have had together in the Mare Street Hackney Steam...

Sir,

Re your housebrick dated as above.

It is no exageration that the very sanctity of fatherhood is at peril here.

The barbaric manner in which Messers Double & Vision have feasted themselves 'pour gratis' on the celluloid delights of Frauline Clitzobelle have shaken a strict moral code to it's very foundations.

Please accept this fortnight in Edwina Currie by way of apology[Single supplement charges will be applied].

Yours in Adminstration,

H Hotspur.

Towards the end of his playing days Shiringham had developed one of the keenest footballing brains i've ever seen. his positioning was 2nd to none. it can only be a good thing to let him work with our forwards

I've never quite understood this universal dislike for tim sherwood. He put in some fantastic performances for us and was always willing to fight for hte team, something sadly lacking of late. I also remember him scoring the winner in a 2-1 victory against the scum and he also put vieira out of the game early in the 2nd half. that's good enough for cult status in my book. get off his back and learn your history you johnny come latelys.

Point taken leerocker. I don't think anyone's forgetting any good works of the past. But they for the majority still leave him well shy of any 'cult' status.

I didn't despise him as a player. But how many years ago was that? People change as they get older. Take Madame de Hotspur for example.

It's more a case of the helium quality of his routinely negative comments he's made about Spurs since getting his Setanta contract.

He doesn't or at least I haven't witnessed anything from him in the last 12 months to suggest he has a passion for this Club.

And I've got an A Level in History.

I don't see him Tim Sherwood that far off "cult status" Harry, in fact he's only one letter of that for me.
As for Teddy, I would rather him than the lovely but uninhibited by intelligence, Sir Lesley of Ferdinand.

I maintain that most of the ex-players who go on to have success in coaching/management are slower paced more dominant footballers. They generally have longer playing careers because they are forced to rely on other strengths. They have to read and understand the game better to be effective and as such have a greater '"footballing brain". The likes of Mark Hughes, Roy Keane, Gareth Southgate, Gus Poyet and I think Teddy Sheringham potentially could develop into a decent coach in the future. He isn't the most articulate but he doesn't need to be to get his point acrosss to the players on the training ground. Add to that he has a positive demeanour and is liked within the club and through footballing circles. He is also someone who knows the club very well and potentially someone Arry can rely on alongside Clive Allen to steer him through any potential mindfields within the Lane.

Tim sherwoods strengths on the other hand (although he too was very slow) are to be a bit of a hard ass and not a very convincing one at that. He rubs people up the wrong way and was delighted to kick the club while it was down over the past few seasons for his own personal reasons. No brains, no charisma, no thanks!

Sorry to go off message, but I can't see Sheringham being any good as a coach. He never struck me as being particularly astute tactically and was always more about himself than the team (great player though he was), you only have to examine his spat with Cole to see that. Often the best players don't make the grade managerially and it is the either the journeymen who do well or the ones whose careers were cut short, dare I cite Wenger as a prime example, also Scolari and Sir Alex (career was curtailed through injury) not to mention Clough who was a brilliant player who too finished early.

I also don't understand the link with Sherwood, he's shown no interest in coaching previously, though he played for us it was in the twilight of his career and certainly didn't play particularly well let alone be counted as amoung the legends. Sir Les was perenially injured so was hardly a legend. In fact I can't really think of any of our former starts that would make a good coach, you'd probably find it was the likes of Howells, Edinburgh, Butters or Sedgely that would do well...
