The Truth Behind The FAILED Corluka Transfer

Sunday, 10 August 08, 06:01 PM · Comments (132)

This is from a tipster called Snout on a Manchester City forum called Blue Moon. I say Man City, despite I'd say 90% of viewers and 25% of posters over the past few days have been Tottenham fans....Now whilst this isn't written in stone, it does read too well to be dismissed. Proof again that even the best tipsters luck out as circumstances change.

"Let me start by saying that I am neither City or Spurs, but I do know a little about what is happening with Corluka due to a 'business' interest.

When Spurs first made contact, it was Shinawatra's people that agreed a fee with Spurs and told Corluka he was free to leave. They did that without Mark Hughes' knowledge or consent.

Corluka was suprised to say the least. When Hughes took over he told Corluka he was one of the mainstays in his future plan for MCFC. Nevertheless, Corluka travelled to London to meet with Spurs' people.

Hughes then found out about the deal, and basically vetoed it - which was something the Thai's people had agreed he could do with any transfer activity when he took over. That's when Corluka was summoned back to Manchester to go up to Glasgow for the Celtic friendly.

Behind the scenes a real row started between Hughes and certain elements of the board; Hughes furious that they had gone behind his back to sell Corluka to Spurs, and the board enraged that Hughes had effectively recalled him from London for the Celtic game.

Shinawatra's people told Hughes that evening that the deal was 'too good to turn down', largely due to Shinawatra's financial problems. So, immediately after the Celtic game, Corluka flew back to London to resume talks with Spurs.

When Spurs' initial offer was accepted, Corluka had no real desire to leave City. That wasn't anything against Spurs, more the vision for the future of MCFC he had been sold by Hughes and Cook. However, after meeting with Spurs and talking with Modric, Corluka was sold on Tottenham and agreed terms. He went through a two-day medical, which he passed without problem. He's been holed up in a London since early Friday morning - hence why he missed the club photo.

Spurs agreed the final details for the transfer with City yesterday morning, and Corluka put pen to paper on his player registration.

Then City's people accepted the offer from Sunderland for Stephen Ireland, and Hughes went properly mental. Twice in 48 hours he felt he was having players he wanted sold from under him. In a rage, it was Hughes who called Ireland and told him he was expected to report to the CoMS to report for the Milan game. Hughes putting him on for a couple of minutes was a big statement on his part.

Here comes the really interesting part.

Hughes last night told Cook he was through with City and wants out, the sale of Corluka and Ireland being the straw that broke the camel's back. He said if the Corluka deal went through particularly, he would be on his way out of City too.

At that point City have tried to derail the Corluka and Ireland deals.

BUT, Spurs claim to have completed the paper work for the transfer which has already been lodged with the FA and signed by someone from City with authorisation to do so. City say they agreed a sale in principle with Spurs, but that no final transfer documents had been signed.

As such Corluka, who was expecting to be paraded at White Hart Lane this afternoon, is in limbo. However, he has now set his heart on Spurs and linking up with Modric and has told City he will not return to the CoMS under any circumstances. He has been sold on Tottenham, and become frustrated with the background stuff taking place at City.

Spurs and City are maintaining their respective positions, but Spurs have basically told City that they are willing to see the issue go to court. They believe they have signed Corluka, and Corluka wants to play for them.

What a mess."

Add to this it is now being rumoured that Shinawatra is in fact, currently on the lamb.... http://in.reuters.com/article/worldNews/id...-34929020080810 the word 'implode' seems pretty accurate.

Let's hope Tottenham can enjoy some class of windfall at their expense. Women, children and Hotspur first.

Honestly, the best Hollywood scriptwriters couldn't have made up the stuff thats been going on in this transfer window. Although a Bollywood version of the drama would be quite an interesting sight?

Heres hoping we can salvage some more talent from the Citeh fire sale.

wow, that's some tale. the previous citeh board were fools to accept his takeover and surely he would have failed all the due diligence stuff if it had been conducted without the $ signs in their eyes. it'd be great to see sparky leave pre-season start, imagine the drama. and i still hate them for the wretched 3-0 3-4 come back all those years ago.

I wonder if Sir red nose has been on the phone to Hughes. He's got a vacancy for a No2, Hughes apparently unhappy. What a nice way out of the City mess that would be.

If he does sign i think he will be a cracking acquisition to the squad particularly to the defense, which needs cover at Rb after selling Chimbonda. The fact that he can play at Cb and possibly Dm fits in with the versatile signing JR is looking to sign. If this story is true about him being won over by Tottenham's vision, then i cannot see a way back for him at City.

Okay, quote No 1 is me. 7th of August. And so far hardly the worst piece of blogging you'll ever read. Corluka Stalled and he ain't signing.

Quote No 2 is not me and either you acknowledge you made it up or tell who did say it.

Quote No 3 clearly is your own work unless you wish to argue otherwise.

Cheers.

I have a memory spanning more than a day ago and what I remember is, throughout this entire closed season, if it weren't for Mr HH I would have shot my PC and probably begun picking off "editers" of some of the other sites which take up space on newsnow!

Why are we wasting so much time and energy on this lad? Zokora was terrific at RB today and will be a solid fill-in until Hutton returns. Let's talk about the season and whether we have any chance to take down one of the big 4 and who that will be.

We absolutely CANNOT let Berbatov go to manure. They look to be the most vulnerable team of the 4 and are going to struggle to find goals until Ronaldo returns.

Can anybody remember the last time we had a world class keeper and this much depth at every position? BIOYPC!

i don't believe for a minute that is Corluka's decision - to be honest why would you reject Spurs over staying at Manchester City?! Doesn't make any sense - i suspect (agreeing with some opinions/reports) that Mark Hughes has threatened to walk if it goes through; so instead of having no manager, Man City (and Taksin in particular) have decided to knock the transfer on the head.

Real shame though - Corluka would have been a really good signing.

Any news on Arshavin or Veloso?

Harry - this talk of legal action, how likely do you think this will happen given that the new season is only a week away? Even more critical is that City are playing in the UEFA cup on Thurs night which could see ol' Vedran cup-tied.

I, like my fellow Spurs fans, was getting very excited about this transfer and would be gutted if it doesn't materialise. Had seemed that the majority of our targets this summer have been acquired in a very positive manner and this looked to be more of the same.

I would only hope that if this doesn't proceed then DL, DC and JR have other targets on their list of the same pedigree that are obtainable within the time-frame left.

You know what? I think Berbatov is one of the best footballers I've seen at The Lane in 20 years. You know what else? In that formation tonight, with him dropping off behind Bent, we wouldn't miss him if he went. Giovani, or Arshavin (assuming that would happen if Berba went), would be just fine and dandy in that role. I'm not convinced that Berba is the right man to spearhead a 4-5-1.

HeroesWeCanBe, i completely agree about berbs, as long as we sign some kind of replacement, all of our midfielders are incredibly adaptable, making for massive options (personnel and formation). That along with Spurs spearheading the call for seven players on the bench next seaon, Ramos is a very clever man.

On another note, Bentley and Gio were top drawer today, and I am finding it difficult not to get carried away with talk of breaking into the top four, although we have been here in previous summers :?

Highlights from the lane today:

At 5-0 "Are you Arsenal in disguise?"

Seeing 1 Mexican and 2 Brazilian yiddos on the pitch together.

Bentley: instant hero. GDS: mercury.

Whole team oozed class and confidence (including Zakora)

Corluka: hadn't heard of him before Thursday & will have forgotten him by Tuesday, hey ho.

nice positive post mate, i heard Zokora was good and he tries kin hard. As long as he doesnt venture any further up the field than RB or even DM then I'd be happy with that.

Dorian Dervitte must be getting there fitness wise so maybe he is being considered?

sorry answering so late saw Dervitte at Rushden in friendly last week, he came on for rocha after 30 mins and changed the game from the back, its a shame Archibald-henville has gone on loan to norwich he was like a little ledders! great to see the game today lets hope the form continues for the...

never seen him but he comes with big reputation, shame he was so badly injured. About time some of the reserves had a look in, didnt do J Ohara any harm

Dervitte played against either Port Vale or Cardiff in one of the cups a while back and looked the part, it won't be long before he is back in the first team fold.

Dare I ask this - but is Villa (great striker that he is) the right choice to lead a 4-5-1? Only possibly. Clive Allen knocked in 50 goals in front of a cracking 5 man midfield, and he's no bigger (in feet and inches I mean) than Villa. But I'm not so sure nowadays, it needs more of a physical presence don't you think?

It was a surprise when Sparky took the Man Sh1tty job, as who didn't think he had ambitions to lead Manure into bright, sunlit uplands at some point? In going to Sh1tty he has surely put a spanner in those works and burned his bridge, in addition to enabling me to mix my metaphors.

Despite that, it still have seemed a peculiar choice for him. As an intelligent man, he must have looked up when considering the post and seen the storm-clouds hanging over Thaksin's head, and the others approaching from not too far away.

Money talks, no doubt, even to the astute and cautious. But there has always been something about the current regime at Sh1tty that says, 'Stay well away.' As fans, we often see more clearly than those whose football vision and critical faculties should be sharper than ours. Fans are criticised for making uniformed, emotional decisions; but the truth is we often develop a sixth sense in relation to clubs and players, which coaches just as often lack.

Thaksin seems on a downward spiral, as the past catches up with him. Why Sven and Sparky - and, to some extent, the players - would get involved with him is a mystery to me, considering his reputation. I guess we all need jobs, and we take what we're offered.

Corluka would appear to have seen the (Lily)light and wants to come. His so-called 'heart-to-heart' with Sparky was probably nothing of the kind, but more a realisation that he is currently a pawn in an ugly struggle between forces outside his control.

How Spurs react to the legal ramifications of the situation will be interesting. Perhaps Levy will allow the knot to unravel itself, as seems likely over time. The player's employment position should be clear, I would think. Forms and signatures were either delivered or not.

As a footnote, it was a great performance today. The players look fit and at ease. Bentley looks happy. I can see him being immense.

Morning chaps.

Should have left quote-marks out of it perhaps, but I don't feel that my renditions of the Corluka Saga according to Mr. HH, is that wide of the mark. If it makes me unpopular, I frankly couldn't give a c-nut.

Anyway, this story has left everyone, from bloggers, to ITK's, to managers, to regular fans and international fugitive club owners, with their beards stuck in their mail-boxes.

The transfer market has finally detached itself, and become the singular demonic entity we always suspected it to be.

So with the possible upcoming garage sale at the CoMS, I suggest we help them lower their wage bill by getting Richards and Hart also.

Firstly, just a word of respect for Sparky. A Hard and solid player and with Peter Lorimer of Leeds one of the best strikers of a moving ball England has seen. Hughes had the flair of a Brazillian wrapped in the toughness of a Kraut/ Italian defender. He's too good for this shit and I attach no blame to him for screwing our deal.

However the deal is an important one as we really need a blooded player who is proven in the EPL and can give the cover and strength we still need in the spine of the team. Zokora is doing well but we've seen him have shockers, JJ is not a self motivated individual and won't put it about enough and Hudd is frankly not there yet.

We still need a Corluka type player and another forward and time is running out as clubs start to settle their business of players in and out. I don't doubt we'll do business in the last hour of the window, but is this giving Ramos the best run in? We've done well, but friendlies are not league games its only a year ago that this top 4 challenger got tanked by Sunderland (aka Spurs 2).

I really think we should pursue Corluka if as someone has suggested, the paperwork has been sent to the FA and an injunction to stop them using him in the Eufa Cup should be sought but only really to try to push this into completion.

The interesting thing is though, if he is registered as a Spurs player with the FA, City presumeably can't pick him anynmore without being busted for playing what will then be for them, an unregistered player.

If the fella was registered to spurs then spurs would have anounced it already.

the paperwork was complete as I have read it - although soho square's offices not open or able to complete / rubber stamp / register the deal
More to come on this one ...no matter how the media / Citea have dressed it up
Kaboul gone so we really do need CB's

shouldn't matter about rubber stamping. if the signature is there and has been witnessed then it is a binding contract.

That is why it seems like it can't be a done deal. Particularly with the welshman saying the complete opposite.

yep many forms required to be signed in a transfer deal (all part of the red tape involved in most things nowadays)
would be good if we could complete though...you trusting a Welshman by the way?
What other decent CB's available though?

wow, that's some tale. the previous citeh board were fools to accept his takeover and surely he would have failed all the due diligence stuff if it had been conducted without the $ signs in their eyes. it'd be great to see sparky leave pre-season start, imagine the drama. and i still hate them for...

So you know your football then!! That was Utd not City. Jesus!!!

i don't believe for a minute that is Corluka's decision - to be honest why would you reject Spurs over staying at Manchester City?! Doesn't make any sense - i suspect (agreeing with some opinions/reports) that Mark Hughes has threatened to walk if it goes through; so instead of having no manager,...

Because of money.

Man City have no wage structure. You don't even have to go back that far (Dunne 08, Petrov 07) to find players that have chosen the innocuous side of Manchester over White Hart Lane.

Was at the game today, and what has struck me most about the team now, is that they are playing with smiles on their faces. (well, berbatov managed to hold off his sulky frowning at least). HeroesWeCanBe, i completely agree about berbs, as long as we sign some kind of replacement, all of our...

Bentley and Gio were outstanding. I'm not sure we had a regular starting position in mind for Gio when he was signed - you couldn't leave him out now though. As things stand, Berbatov is cover for Bent - amazing! We will need another front man if he does move on though.

That WILL be David Villa, too many coincidental rumours for it not to be true

Hahahaha. Not been a Spurs supporter very long then, I imagine.
