THFC Director Responds To Transfer Gloom

Tuesday, 02 September 08, 11:32 AM · Comments (119)

This is good.

A poster on BBC 606 emailed Executive Director Paul Barber at Tottenham.

And appears to have gotten a personalised response. Here's both emails. And well done, Mr Barber.

Hi,

As a season ticket holder and an extremely passionate supporter I was just wondering why the £31Million we made from the Berbatov sale wasn’t used to buy another striker.

For me the Uefa cup over the last 2 years has been fantastic, travelling to Leverkusen, Seville, PSV. The only disappointment has been the failure to reach the final stages of the competition. With the excellent additions in midfield and signing a great goalkeeper this summer I was really optimistic in progressing in Europe. Since 12am this morning my feelings have slightly changed. We are now going into a European competition with 2 strikers. Neither striker has scored in Europe, and the other striker has never even scored in the premiership. From having 4 good strikers with the perfect balance of height, strength, pace, and skill, we now have 3, of whom maybe one of them is a proven goal scorer at the highest level (Pavyluchenko), but not in England.

Don’t get me wrong some of the signings this seasons have been brilliant, especially with players like Bentley and Modric, but you cant win games without goals. Do you agree with having only Darren Bent and Fraizer Campbell for our Uefa Cup campaign? Do you agree with the fact that we always knew Berbatov was going to go for 25million +, so why we havent used that money to add more quality?

Thank you for taking the time to read. I look forward to your reply.

Regards,
Daniel

Dear Daniel,

Thank you for your e-mail.

Berbatov has been replaced by Pavyluchenko. He is proven international striker with 9 goals in 23 internationals and 77 goals in 147 appearances for Spartak Moscow.

Keane has been replaced by the attacking combination of Giovanni Dos Santos (a young Mexican with 6 international caps and 28 games for Barcelona), David Bentley (an England International), Luka Modric (a Croatian international) and Frazier Campbell (a young and exciting emerging talent). He was not a “last minute panic buy” – he is on loan to us for a season.

The Club will shortly issue a statement on the transfer window business and we will refer to the issue of buying another striker.

I think you will find that this answers your queries. Please keep an eye on www.tottenhamhotspur.com

Regards, Paul

I love the way that Paul denies that Campbell was a "last minute panic buy" when the original email never even mentioned that at all...

In all fairness, if you email Spurs with a valid point and go about it in the right way, you get a response. I did after the NEwcastle game and Levy sent me an email back to the effect of thae performance wasn't good enough and check the site for an apology, which duly came. COYS>

What a silly response - Modric certainly wasn't signed as a replacement for Keane as he mentioned when joining how he was looking forward to playing with Keane, Berba, etc!!!

I just hope the prem league chiefs investigate this deal. Im fuming at the lack of balls our board has shown, surely we would have eventually got money more from them after blocking city's attempts to talk to the player. Just look at Newcastle's fans this evening, would love to see the yid army mobilise and let our feelings be know outside the lane

The thing thats angered me more than anything is the fact we got campbell on loan. This is a joke. This will just be helping manure further. We give him some prem experience and some confidence, and manure get him back as a more mature and experienced player. We're starting to look like their feeder club. If we wanted him we should have got him permanently or not at all. Once again manure get exactly what they want.

It's good that Barber did reply. What we really need to know though, are answers to the following:

1. Why did we allow MU to take Berbatov when we had said all along that he was tapped up and not for sale and had made a complaint to the Premier League?

2. Do the Board understand the wider implications of the sales of Carrick, Keane and Berbatov - i.e. that we are now a selling club and no-one takes us seriously (witness MU's complete disregard for the rules last night). This position has/will cost much more than the value of the players sold (we are still waiting for Carrick's replacement - how much has that cost us already).

3. Is Campbell a loan to purchase, or can MU just take him back if he does well?

Whoever at Spurs Community has Barber's e-mail address, could you please ask him these questions?

Thanks very much - from a season ticket holder for 35 years who remembers when there was a football club here.

I'm more upset by the fact we haven't signed a classy defensive midfielder. I heard talk about Veloso which would have been our best signing in the last few seasons as we've been very poor in that area but nothing emerged. I feel this is what we're lacking the most (4 goals in 2 games against boro and sunderland, we need to cover the back four, all the top teams in the league have a quality DM (Essien/Hargreaves/Mascherano), who have we got, Zokora? Huddlestone? Jenas? they all can't help but push on constantly leaving big gaps for the opposition to play in when we lose possession. Ledley can play there as can Corluka but there much needed at the back where they play the best game. I feel Veloso would have been the difference this year between top and bottom ends of the table table. I hope this loan deal is an option to buy situation otherwise we got screwed, he gets the highest level game time, can't play against Man Utd then goes back to them a more finished product at the end of the year. Should have just kept Pekhart seeing as he's ours and I feel brings a smarter edge to striking with height and strength, Campbell plays very much like Bent with pace off the last man. Just to remind everyone that Corluka too is unable to play Uefa cup football, which is great news. I hope our defence stays fit and Roman Pavlyurussian isn't knackered from playing solid footie for a year come Christmas time.

First post as a registered participant and one who has long enjoyed HH's work, whether here or as West Stand Voice elsewhere.

Sports execs will often agree that it's better for a club to get rid of a player a year too soon than a year too late.

If you're going to hammer Levy on the transfer dealings, keep in mind that Robbie Keane is beginning to look like poster boy for the theory. With Gerrard and Torres facing shelf time in the medic ward, Keane's about to face more defensive coverage than ever before. We shall not only see what he's really made of, but how astute Daniel Levy was in taking a very generous fee for his transfer.

We have some smart people running Spurs. After a decade of decay due to too much Sugar, I despaired that White Hart Lane would become as relevant as Loftus Road. It's obviously not the case and never will be.

An understandably bad start is not an insurmountable one. We have a good result to move forward from and many reasons to be optimistic that Spurs under Ramos and Levy will achieve their potential.

If you're miserable and want company, just visit with fans from: Everton, where the season's quickly going gooey and neither they nor their neighbours could build a new outhouse, let alone new stadiums; Newcastle, where the King loses his crown as the owner loses his marbles; Ar5ena1, where fans with tinfoil hearts and tinsel-forged players await the next bout of niggling injuries to their delicate boys to ruin their season; Or even West Ham, where a crisis in confidence, despite two wins in three games, still has everyone freaking out.

It ain't been great at the Lane thus far, but there's a lot to work with here and the resources to make it better down the road.

Divot McMulligan - I understand what you say about Keane, and I share your view that the price was potentially good. It's probably also true that by holding on until the last minute, a better price was obtained for Berbatov (with a little help from Manchester City no doubt).

What's completely missed here though is that these were not planned transfers to allow better players a chance or youngsters to come through. These were distress sales that have left deep holes in the team and undermined our position seriously. Who will be next - Modric if he does well this season? You can't run a football club on selling your best players time and time again. It makes no footballing or financial sense. Even Amy Winehouse gets it - No No No

People criticising our board for dragging their heels in the Berba saga take note of the ManUtdBlogger editorial comment:

'Even though Berbatov finally made it - despite the deliberately cheeky efforts of Manchester City to scupper our best laid (in fact poorly-laid) plans at the eleventh hour - we’re still left wondering why this wasn’t wrapped up a whole lot sooner.

Some might consider brinkmanship a sensible ploy for cost-conscious businesses, but what did United effectively gain from allowing this saga to run down to the wire? Beyond the acquisition of the player not much - certainly no reduction in cost. In fact all this prevarication served to do was endanger the possibility of the transfer by allowing the Sulaiman-Come-Latelies over at Wastelands to try to piss on our chips.

United paid more than they wanted or can really afford for Berbatov, but frankly, given Levy’s obvious tenacity, should have seen the writing on the wall sooner and coughed up the shekels back in June.'

Ok right good letter which was not answered i dont see how keane (a in my opinion up their with the best) can be replaced my a unproven mexican, last time i looked bentley and modric were not strikers campbell is unproven in the premiership. so i would hardly call that a straight swap. Then i come to Pavyluchenko he is not a proven goalscorer in the premiership (yet) not a straight swap either. Lets face its total blown up in our faces and no one in the hierarchy have done anything and to be honest i feel let down to be honest. Only time will tell but its not good at all.

Final point i do not like this 4 5 1 system at all play 442 last time i checked we dont play in spain. I dont want to watch that boring football please please ramos switch back to 442. :? :? :?

All this "We've become a selling club" stuff is bollocks.

A couple of years ago United sold one of the greatest finishers of all time in Van Nistleroy and the Arse have just lost Hleb and Flamini. Then there is Robinho leaving Real Madrid. All clubs buy and sell we're no different.

I am gutted to lose one of the best forwards we've ever had but he wanted to go and as Roy Keane says book the cab and say adios.

Of course the Govern big head plays rough which has cost them several million more and maybe cost us another striker for now. Or maybe Zenit just faffed around too much who knows ?

Levy was certainly shrewd in realising some time ago that players come and go and that it is better to buy low and sell high.

He certainly does that pretty well.

Some bedtime reading for you on the rules & regs for transfer window;

Premier League and SPL clubs now have until midnight on Monday, 1 September to sign players after the deadline was extended by 24 hours for the convenience of clubs as the previous date fell on a Sunday.

English Football League and Blue Square Premier (Conference National) clubs have the same deadline for full transfers, but not for loans. Clubs in the English non-league pyramid below the Blue Square Premier are not bound by the transfer window system.

After midnight on 1 September, Premier League and SPL clubs cannot sign any players, on loan or full transfers, until the next transfer window in the 2008/09 season opens on 1 January. This window will stay open until midnight on Monday, 1 February.

Clubs in the Football League can sign players on loan outside of the transfer windows, following a seven-day period after the transfer window closes.

Outside of the transfer windows, any club may still sign players on an emergency basis (such as if they had no goalkeepers available) with the permission of their competition's governing body, ie the Premier League.

Players who are out of contract and do not have a club, can be signed outside of the transfer window if they are unattached free agents when the window closes.

END

The last one might hold some credance/hope that maybe there is an ace up a sleeve?

This one is most important. I had no idea. This would be a great chance to get a good striker or defensive midfielder, or both, on board if we guarantee to sign them both at the end of the spell for good money.

Alan Hansen said on MOTD after the Sunderland game that Berba was going to go and he thought the delay was down to a replacement being found.

I am NOT ITK but it looks to me like we expected Arshavin to be sorted and by the time that fell apart we were faced with keeping the weeping Bulgar for another 4 months and then getting less or shipping him out and doing the best we could.

To me that's a no brainer.

Aren't we forgetting here with these e-mails that Pav is cup tied? The origional e-mail asked the question about going into Europe with just 2 strikers and gets a reply going on about Pav? Same goes with Cors being cup tied.
I want to know like many others if: 1)We have an option to buy Campbell and if not:2) Why are we giving valuable experience to a Red Nose product and not Peckhart?

shit i hope you guys are right but if you refer to the clear definition between Football league and Premier league in my earlier post (and taken from the following link) then i think we can only use the last paragraph which is still an option even if we offer to buy it out for them?

How about the 2 west ham loans, 18 hours after the window closed? or were they both out of contract?

i can only think they registered them before the deadline, i think we did the same with Rasiak (loan or purchase, makes no diff). I hate to say it but i think i am right, our only chance is out of contract players or players who buy themselves out of their contract (which is as corrupt as fuck if you think about it, Spurs could give them that back by way of some hidden bonus)

OK so we're not happy but as my ex-wife and the mother of my child still tells me that the glass is half full....The curse of being a Spur's supporter is that we are forever half empty....notice I said ex as I left her in a London hotel on a rainy Sunday, last day of a vacation to London, to run down to Selhurst to see a bore draw with Wimbledon...Barmby scored...near the end of Ossie's reign....

Fact...neither Keane or F&*$atov wanted to be here and I don't think anyone can argue that we didn't receive full value for both....and as far as F&^%atov does anyone seriously believe the Prem League would act against Scum U?? Our sense of pride would not have brought more money for him in January. We cut our losses for a very tidy profit....

Fact, outside of AA and HH the pipedream, the alternatives were Heskey, Owen and today Doyle all of who's upsides were cancelled by equal or greater downsides (age, previous knocks, and skill).....It is fairly obvious that Zenit wanted 100% of the fee upfront and it seems that is outside of the norm.....

Fact...we do not know yet if Campbell has a designated price tag at season's end...At best, we have an England under 21 striker under contract if desired, at worst we have a stop gap that will not cost us after use which brings me to........

Fact...No Panic Buys!!!!!! I have one word to emphesize the last point Raziak!!!!

Yes, we all wanted another CB and DM but life is not perfect and with the clear out, the roster is far more role focused then it was a year ago....there are only 4 senior players banished to the reserves and one of them has a torn up knee....

So option 1 is that the window could have gone better!!! Option 2 was being stuck with a depressed Bulgarian Cancer with a diminishing return and no guarentee of punishment for Fergie the Red Nosed Alchoholic. I will take option 1 and at the end of the day applaud DL for getting maximum value for those who did not want the shirt.....

Glory, Glory!!!!!!!!!

"I am particularly disappointed that we were unable to make one additional signing, another experienced striker. The deal was agreed but fell through in the final moments due to agent activity. It is all too often that judgments are made on how these deals are or are not concluded and the reality and the reasoning that happens is often very different and highly unpredictable.

"Two of our new signings, Vedran and Roman are cup-tied for the UEFA Cup and whilst this is not ideal, we shall work with the whole team to produce good performances. We are building a squad for the league and future seasons and we are all looking forward to getting on with playing football now."

Well i think that each and every point is valid and shows that they have our clubs interests at heart. The best point is Mr Levy saying that the two rats jumping ship have overshadowed a fantastic window for us. I would much rather settle for three strikers (perhaps a recalled Pekhart if things get hairy) than to have panic bought a lump. Well done Damien and Daniel for avery honest and humble statement which was duly required after the unecessary hysteria which us Spurs fans seem to create for no apparent reason.

To be fair, Campbell has already said that he's happy to be at Tottenham and if you read between the lines he'd much rather be with us than with those twonks at Wigan or Hull.

As has been pointed out before too, the "Old Ronaldo" may have a dicky knee, but he's also a free agent.

Talking of which.... what happenned to those players that didn't receive a squad number particularly The Prince and Rocha? Surely we should at least give 'em numbers and keep them as squad players?

Cant help but feel our season is well not over coz we have some fine players but it feels like it might be another nearly season and we all know how they feel.

2 of our main signings are cup tied in Europe and as much as like the players we have I cant see them being strong enough to compete in Europe.

I too am really annoyed that we have only got Campbell for 1 season, not good enough for manure 1st 11 but good enough for us to train up in time for them to snatch him back and reap the rewards of our labour.

I love Spurs and always will, but I can't believe the powers that be have allowed this to happen.

Did we spend $77m on those 8 players. How does that break down? $45m Modric, Betley Pav, another $15m on Gomes and Corluka, that's $60m, $5 on Gio wasn't it. That leaves $12m for Cambell and Sanchez. I don't think so. And $72m from sales, so thats about $21m after Keane and Berba, anyone know how that breaks down? The $72m sounds about right, but I can't figure how the $77m adds up. Anyone?

Just to follow up on where the money went. A quick review of the reported info around the web shows that the concensus of opinion is that we received £76m and spent £66m. Thats is £15m adrift from the official figures quoted by Levy on the site. I know £15m is fairly small beer nowadays in the PL, but nevertheless I would like to know the actual figures, wouldn't you? Isn't transparency a pre-requisite at the London Stock Exchange? In which case what's the numbers, because it was reported we were only a million or so short on Arshavin weeks ago, so to have £15 million slip through the cracks is significant.

Just got is and decided to expend some vitriol on the F.A. inbox, I still can’t believe that the rule states that a club can break the transfer rules as long as it can bully and bribe the target club into not making a complaint. It only adds weight to argument that the investigation into corruption in football failed to find anything because it was instructed not to.
If it carries on like this the F.A. will leave Football with all the credibility of American Wrestling

Dear Football Association

I would like to complain about the abject performance of the Football Association (F.A.) and question your ability/suitability to continue as our national sports governing body.
After watching live television containing images of Manchester United plc and their representative Sir Alex Ferguson blatantly breach transfer regulations with the transfer of a player from Tottenham Hotspur to Manchester United I am left confused as to whether F.A. rules only apply to clubs without financial muscle or personal influence. For any club to ignore unashamedly the F.A. and its rules would suggest that they have an unwritten impunity to the sanctions that would normally be handed out to any less influential club.
When this latest debacle is added to the lack of action following the conviction of Joey Barton for serious assault, the meaningless fine handed out to West Ham United over the Carlos Tevez affair and you persistent ineptitude in dealing with massed cheating (i.e. our overpaid but under educated professional footballers diving/feigning injury with the complicity of their managers and clubs) the F.A has consistently proven itself to be an insincere, impotent and pointless organisation. Any governing body that is too frightened to discipline its charges or enforce its own rules should be disbanded and replaced forthwith.
Normally to witness the massed ranks of the F.A. cowering pathetically in the front of a lone, red faced and probably inebriated Scotsman would be worth the admission charge on its own but this is where any amusement is treated with a caustic coating of reality. As a youth worker I frequently experience the consequences of your pathetic attempts to govern a sport/industry that has a disproportionate influence on the behaviour of young people.
If your hierarchy could prise their collective lips away from every wealthy and influential backside that is pointed in their general direction perhaps they could start earning the ridiculous salaries.

I wait expectantly……. for you to conform to the fat cat stereotype and do nothing except pocket another lovely wad of cash accompanied by a bottle of Alex Ferguson complimentary plonk .

Questions:

1. Why/how did we manage to cock up deal for Arshavin?

2. How does Frazier Campbell provide a sufficient alternative in attack?

3.Why didn't we just promote Peckhart into the senior squad?

4. Why did I renew my season ticket?

For me the whole fiasco with Berbatov has already cost us in the poor start to the season and as we haven't managed to replace like for like (i.e. pairing that scored 50 goals past two seasons), with anything like the same goal threat.
I can't see us challenging for anything this year ... having more options by getting someone of the quality of Arshavin was the minimum that we needed.
The board have played it nicely in terms of the money we have brought in and that is important, but on the football side have failed miserably and to be honest I think that is what counts at the end of the day ...

I think the most important thing is do we have an option, in our favour, to sign Faizer Campbell. I can't think of anything worse than him being a massive hit and Man Utd taking him back or selling him to a rival.

Can someone contact Paul Barber and ask the team to look at getting Ronaldo and Appiah as free agents. I think they would help a lot at the moment.
