I recently saw a TV program that referenced self-immolation, which is what sprung to mind in last night's defeat at Udinese.
A crude and flippant comparison, but the Tottenham players are committing football suicide, and in the first group match of the UEFA Cup, in the most drastic way possible.
Heurelho Gomes botched attempt to deal with a regulation back-pass and Jamie O'Hara mindless sending-off were the epitomes of self-damage on a football pitch. The players are not quite setting themselves on fire (although Gomes wincing and balling at the slightest knock suggests he is), but our season is rapidly going up in flames. What can be drawn from the wreckage of another listless defeat?
Confidence is low. Obviously. We started well, passing the ball well and demanding it off each other in a manner that suggested the players were no longer hiding from it and failing to take responsibility.
We should have taken the lead when Jermaine Jenas surged into the box and teed up Darren Bent. His limp header went straight to the keeper.
A lack of confidence was Five commentator Ray Houghton's diagnosis.
The opening goal drained any purpose the players had Spurs didn't attack with any real threat again, apart from when Bent made the keeper work a little harder with another header in the closing stages.
We clearly didn'texpect to get back into the game and this lack of confidence was compounded by poor decision-making.
Gomes should have just hacked the ball clear after stumbling and perhaps would have done if he was surer of himself and clearer of thought, although it was worrying that he seemed to gesture to Ledley that he could do nothing else but dribble the ball clear. Our skipper pointed to row Z. Gomes is clearly a strange one but again displayed a shot-stopping ability that suggests he will come good.
That is what we hope of all the players, that they will start showing their potential. The current problems the lack of confidence, clear thinking, leadership and quality are all signs of under-achievement and the players have little idea of how to improve things.
They confuse the need to stand up and be counted with flying into challenges; they confuse the need to show composure with dawdling on the ball in defence; and they confuse the need to change things on the pitch with offering inane sound-bites to the press.
If we play like we did in the opening 20 minutes against Udinese in the league, things will turn round. If we play like we did for the rest of that match, they will not.
Harry is right in saying that we must show only support (a change in board or management structure would not immediately solve anything), but the players must take their responsibility and let Juande light the fire of recovery and not continue stoking their own funeral pyre.
Written by Philip Oliver, a professional sports writer and Tottenham fan who blogs about football betting.
The players arent showing any commitment to the cause because most of them dont know what the cause is.
sooner of later we will go in front at home in a league game.
Bolton is Juande last chance I believe. Draw or lose, he will be sacked. Win is a must.
I want Rijkaard in.
lose to bolton on sunday and i'm sorry but ramos will have to go
I think need one game plan and one team for a few games.
Get a starting line-up picked (preferably using players in their preferred positions, and where possible ones who played together last year) and have two or three simple plans to get the ball into a dangerous position.
Also; make Darren Bent watch all the goals he scored for Charlton over and over and over again.
In fact; make the rest of the team watch them to see how they can get a ball to him in a way from which he can score!
OR JUST ANYTHING BUT WHATEVER IT IS WE ARE DOING NOW!
Sorry about that, I'm starting to feel the strain a little.
I think it is time that Ramos goes, he does not have a clue whatsoever...
Martin Jol... yeah just like YOU LOT said he does'nt have the tatical knowledge blah blah..
That's why his top of the german league and won last night 2-1..
Sack Ramos now... HE WILL TAKE US DOWN
No way, lets go for Keane, he will give us the desire and discipline we need ...... and he supported us as a youngster
Just a suggestion, but if you want to motivate your players, why not chant vile homophobic epithets and sinister racist imagery about lynchings at them? All your fans are obviously well rehearsed in such terrace bigotry and it did seem to inspire Sol Campbell.

We have a fantastic atmosphere at the Lane and by working together we can prevent the small minority ruining for everyone.
I just hope 'the small minority ruining it for everybody' we get rid of are the board. They may be shit hot at making money, but at making footballing decisions they are just shit.

Must get the vermin exterminators in, looks like we have a rat on the board above
Up to last night I would have stuck with Juande but I think we have to make yet more changes and I think lets go back to a standard english football structure with the English core of players. As for a manager there are a few out there, but what about Sam Alladice? before you throw derision at him think about it, Knows the Premier league and has a proven track record. Didn't get a fair chance at the toons in my opinion. May not win us the league but he would get the team playing as a team and save us from going down this season and I think given time could build a side capable of challenging again in the future. And he is available too.

Nah, nice thought but he's too long ball direct for us - we are the silky skills, concede 5 score 6 team that we all love so much. He would be like drinking ribena when we should be used to champagne
Jose Mourinho is making noises about wanting to return to the Premiership....Not only would he save us, but give us a great chance of reaching the top 5 next season....Let's pack "ello peep's" saddle bags full of compensation and send him and his donkey back to Espana!

Real chance to see a legendary team now. Go winless all season, and they're immortal. The Vincibles.
A wash-rinse-spin dry cycle through the Championship League could be just what this organization needs. Heaping plateload of humble pie and an incentive to properly rebuild the management team.
I'm bored spitless these days watching all the Prem's second-tier strivers, including us, scrabble and claw their way up to the glass ceiling below fourth place. Only to be stuck in an meaningless eyechart of a continental competition that seems to do more harm than good.
If we're lucky, the vortex of our downward spiral will draw in Foolham and WetSpam for the drop as well. That'll set up a season full of fun local derbies that'll include the QP Dolls, Chuckton Arfletic, Crapall Palace and, if we're really lucky, coz they're pushing up, a newly promoted Millwall. Oo's th' guvnor, now, eh?
And maybe we get to tussle with BNP FC aka Leeds Urine-ited.
Lower ticket prices, plenty of short hop away games, chance to watch some promising domestic talent develop before our eyes. Top it all off by winning the league title and, because the fans are having too much fun and there's no need to waste money building the new stadium, politely decline promotion.
I'm ready to accept my posting as THFC Trust's foreign affairs man.

It is clear to me:
Ramos is not a bad manager
Ramos is a good manager
Ramos is on the verge of losing the team and the ability to motivate them
Our players are not bad players
Our players are good players
Our players believed in themselves so much that losing swept the carpet from under them and left them bereft of ideas
Our team doesn't lack ability or passion. It doesn't lack desire or skill.
It lacks one thing drive and leadership on the pitch. It lacks a man... a real man, who will pick the others up by the scruff of the neck and say... What the f*&k are you doing?!?!
Ledley showed to me yesterday he has the game to bring us on, but even he needs an ally... do we have this man? No we don't!
So what does all this mean. It means if we cannot get to 17 points by christmas and sign this player we are going down and we are going down hard.
Losing Ramos may give us a short term fix, but will flatter to deceive and ultimately leave us in the same boat.

It's time to give Bostock a shot in midfield, times are desperate and we need to add a player to the squad that hasn't been effected by the current malaise.
Also, Campbell needs a start.

Funny that. One of my colleagues got tickets at Samford Bridge in with the Chelsea fans a couple of years ago and I went with him. I was totally surrounded by meatheads shouting things like Jeanas you f**king arse jocky, black c**t, stab the c**t etc all match long. Not even having the decency or intellegence to make it rhyme and sing it. Just general vile , venomous abuse and hatred!!!
I have been to many grounds and heard many chants that could be taken as a bit unsavoury but for the most part I can see the funny side of them. At Chelsea I just saw plain loathing!

No offence, Knoc, but all I know about Bostock, is that there has been a big hooha in the press about a 16 year old kid who that spoilt brat phone salesman from south london wanted more money for. Same with Routledge, and where is he now? Is Bostock really that good, and where does he play? Attacking midfield, Striker?

I think Levy is safe. Joe Lewis might just stick with him until the club is sold. Lewis has taken a hit on the markets and would use Levy's deal making skills to cut a good deal if ENIC are ever in negotiations to sell. Trouble is who would want to buy at the moment? Our position makes our value much lower than Levy envisaged at the beginning of the season. So we are in a Catch 22 situation.
Damage limitation will be foremost in Lewis' and Levy's minds and Levy will have instructions to put things right before trying to sell up. A bit of a gamble on Lewis' part...but he's made and lost fortunes by gambling on the markets.
Levy has got a decision to make and I think he has already made it. He's not the type to mess about and everything he does is with business - not footbsll - in mind.
Ramos will stay - unless Athletico Madrid (or some other poorly performing side) come in for him and relieve us of the burden of compensation. In fact we could end up receiving compensation if Levy got really greedy! That has to be Levy's greatest wish at present and I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't touting Ramos around several clubs. He has a brass neck our Daniel!
Comolli is dead in the water and surely will take the blame for Levy's ill-advised brinksmanship during the last window.
A chairman who sticks out for an extra few million for Berbatov isn't going to give up ÂŁ10m plus to get rid of Ramos. Mutual consent? I doubt it.
A new temporary english speaking face in the management structure (suggestions for a title please?) to replace Comolli might be a possibility to inject some guidance to Ramos/Poyet and get us out of the mire in the short term - ready for sale.
Hell, if Ramos & Poyet didn't like it they they could always do a Keegan! Surely we have a clause in Ramos' contract that if he resigns we don't pay compensation? Mmmm!
It's easy this business thing - just keep the most profitable/least costly option as your no.1 priority and slowly creep up on the buggers.

I'd play him at attacking mid, in place of Modric. Bostock at least has some size to him, Modric will be neutralized by Bolton's physical play (though maybe play him out wide). Jenas needs a wake up call that his spot in the lineup isn't guaranteed just because he's considered a captain.
Look I have no idea if Bostock is really "that good" or good at all, but what's the worst that can happen? Spurs lose another game? It's not as if playing our current rotation in midfield has given us any confidence that a win is highly likely on Sunday.
Long time reader first time poster:
for some perverse reason I suggested to my fellow long time Spurs mate that we go to the match this Sunday. Even more perversely he agreed. God know why.
Anyway those people saying that drop to the CHampionship is what we need....forget it. We need to stay up. We need a win. And I do ot care if the winniing goal comes off the shin of the ref, I'll take it.
And for all these suggestions that this person needs to be sacked or the other person, or laying the blame at the guy who made the tea too hot during half time.... it's a collective responsibility for us being here.

A long,long time ago,
I can still remember,
How the Carling Cup win made them smile,
And they knew this could be their chance,
To finally make that big advance,
And maybe, break the top 4 for a while.
But transfer windows made them shiver,
As Robbie Keane went off to Liver.....
Pool, and Berbs to Man U,
You can't believe it can you?
Tears of laughter we all cried,
As on Bent they have to rely,
And Frasier Campbell really tried,
The Day That Tottenham Died !
So my my kiss UEFA goodbye,
When Comoli sold the Goalie,
Well it made Levy Cry,
When you play for Spurs you kiss Capello goodbye,
Soon your gonna be a Magpie,
I bet you wish you were a Magpie.
Did your players eat the poisoned food,
To let Arsenal in and Spoil your mood,
If the fansite tells you so,
Do you believe in Chas'n'Dave,
Can their music save you from an early grave,
And can Dawson teach me how to run real slow,
Well, I knew you were set for a let down,
When the Spaniard signed the Blackburn clown,
You sacked poor Martin Jol,
And now everyone just laughs out loud,
I have long been laughing at your lack of luck,
Your delusion means I couldn't give a .....,
That to the table bottom you are stuck,
The day the Tottenham died,
I started singing (chorus again, ad nauseam)
Amusing but still even Newcastle Fans are taking the piss

You might as well read the FT - 'cos the market dictates what happens at our club - not the sports pages of the red tops. You & I may not like it but it's reality. I think it is getting to the stage where "the Board" will ride it out. They have a strategy and the fans are not part of it. Yet!
The flip side of the coin however is what nearly happened to us just before and during the Sugar/Venables reign - going bust!
We've been buying certain players to make a profit through selling them on - though that appears to have failed in the cases of Ramos' outcasts - Taarabt, Prince-Boateng etc. and it is only Berbatov's and Keanes's transfers that have covered the deficit. In other words the purchases of these young whippersnappers were a gamble and relied on a good coaching infrastructure to bring them through. A cynic would say that we probably shouldn't expect more than 50% of such players to play 3-4 years with the club and then move on. As soon as they reach a certain level sell them for megabucks! That, and the Comolli assessment of some of these players has clearly failed.
I cannot give odds on Ramos staying...but if I was a major shareholder looking to make a profit when the club is eventually sold, I would not want to be paying a shedload of compensation and another shedload to sign some some other numpty who would rip the heart (if there is one) out of what is there and start again.
Another five or six matches without a win while the new blokes assesses the talent. Unless they choose Poyet...and what sort of improvement is that? I don't know but I'm sure someone will tell me!

Fine, thanks. Thanks for bringing me 'round!
Of course we will!
i hadn't realised old dowie had got the sack...but if ramos does get his marching orders....you'd be hard pushed to find a better replacement than mancini of whats available...in my humble opinion...we haven't tried an italian yet have we...

Apparently Baloney is slang for Bologna and is Italian...shows how much I know without google!
Yes...good choice. Possibly as Head coach/advisor for six months? Not to be sniffed at!
yes i believe i used to see mancini playing for lazio back when channel four had italian football....but maybe i'm wrong....either way he was a pretty gifted forward and might show the lads how to score a goal....if senor ramos doesn't go on a winning run of course....i'm hoping old juande beats the arsenal just for his on mental health...be a nice pick me up for him...
So, who the feck sanctioned the following:
.1 i've got a good idea let's sell Defoe to Portsmouth.
.2 i've got a good idea let's sell Berbatov to Man United.
.3 i've got a good idea let's sell Keane to Liverpool.
.4 i've got a good idea let's loan Peckart to Southampton.
.5 who else have we got? Darren Bent mate! Oh good, that should do us then....he's a striker.
What kind of fecking director of football would agree to all of the above? I watched this happening from my lofty perch in Canada and couldn't fecking believe it....and now look what it's led us to. It's almost like Strombolli is still working for Arsenal....get a man on the inside and really feck us up!
And i say it again....why aren't we playing Tarabaat on the left wing? He could be the new Ginola.
Oh, what the feck do i know.
Dumping Wendy now and bringing in whoever we managed to get hold of as a replacement brings no greater guarantee than keeping who we have. It would be nothing more than a desparate move which would in no way solve our biggest and most consistant problem; that of purchasing inappropriate players.
Who of any quality would come to a club with relegation stamped all over it in any case? Rijkaard? Bilic? Can't see it myself; about as likely as our getting eto or villa during last summer.
We need to remove the disasterous Comolli, let Wendy buy his own players in jan - assuming he is able to persuade a couple of past their best but experienced tough-nuts to come over for a well paid swansong - and knock this team into just enough shape to at least take care of the bottom half teams so as to avoid relegation.
What with the growing injury problems and some players suspicious habit of removing themselves from the fray by pointlessly tempting refs to show them red cards, it may yet get worse before it gets better. If that is indeed possible.
Bently stated rather worryingly the other day during an interview that the players don't know what they're supposed to be doing. Why not? It can't just be a language issue. How hard is it to communicate positions and movement on a field? Gus should be taking care of any gaps in Wendy's verbal abilities anyhow.
I'm with Woody on this one. I'm looking squarely at the players. We've seen, inspite of the results, that they can pass it around to good effect and even put the ball in the net. These players proved against chelski what they're capable of. It's so clearly a mental thing and that particular problem is very solvable.
One decent game, one bit of luck plus the sense that the White Hart Lane faithful are right behind them could be all it needs to get them moving in the right direction and more confident. It could happen against anyone and our full support can only make this more likely, not less so.
COYS.
David Blane was gutted today when he found out his record of 48 hours in a box doing fuckall was broken by Darren Bent!

Although I'm not convinced by any means that Ramos has the cojones or knowledge to tell Levy exactly who we need.
The players ought to shut the fuck up, stop feeling sorry for themselves and start bonding/playing.
I can see it slowly happening, but I fear they're waiting for someone off the pitch to take responsibility.
Get behind them, even if you know they're a bunch of cunts.

Although I have been one of the more optimistic posters on here a conversation on 5live earlier tonight between Gabriel Marcotti and David Pleat has made me think again.
They highlighted the fact that not only does this group of players lack leaders it also lacks experience. It is easy to overlook the fact that we have a very young squad.
Then there is Ramos's record. Although he has had an outstanding cup run recently as Pleat said he had a very talented squad at Sevilla so was it him or did he get lucky ? The 5 players he wants out have not been given squad numbers and train with the reserves, how does that help first team morale ? I remember reading that he seldom has stayed at the same club for more than 2 or 3 years.
As Sir Alan says the league table doesn't lie and our record since the Carling win says it all.
We are in this mess due to failures in all main areas.
The players are not playing to their potential.
Our coaching staff are not bringing the best out of the players.
Our transfer policy is failing to provide us with a balanced squad.
Our board have delivered disaster followed by disaster over the past 14 months.
I will be cheering us on come Sunday but I think the three stooges Levy, Commolli and Ramos will all have to go and I think they are beginning to realise it.

I meant to say that Pleat and Marcotti also drew attention to the fact that the club must have known of Ledley's fitness issues and Woodgate, although he plays most games, has also got an injury strewn past yet the club's answer was to buy a right back who can play centre half.
Marcotti has also noticed that we only have one holding player and was quite adamant that no top- team survives without having strength in that area of the pitch.
And we all know I could go on and on with other mysteries such as getting rid of Steed and not buying a left sided midfielder again.

Right. On every level the club, bar the real fans, has lost its soul.
That's a massive negative, but in my mind the truth.
The question is in these times of business over sport, how do we get our club back?
Fucked if I know.
DV,
He's a gooner and the only thing he's on is day release from Broadmoor. He' been repeating the same crap for days now and it's getting tedious.

Just a suggestion, but if you want to motivate your players, why not chant vile homophobic epithets and sinister racist imagery about lynchings at them? All your fans are obviously well rehearsed in such terrace bigotry and it did seem to inspire Sol Campbell.
Yours from the top of the...
Thanks for the laugh....you are:
1.obviously a recent member of the Chelski bandwagon
2.Someone who doesn't go to Chelski games
3.If you do you must be deaf & blind!
You KNOW I was 'avin' a larf when I mockingly deemed our players, potentially, The Vincibles.
But it's Spurs fans who are the REAL Invincibles and White Hart Lane the sort of place where fans can make a real difference.
I couldn't have been more proud of the lot of you during the start of the second half of that already-lost UEFA Cup tie with Sevilla when the place absolutely rocked non-stop for 20 minutes with the sound of 'Martin Jol's Blue/White Army!!!-Boom-Boom-Boom!!!'
It was a thing of of beauty and wonder. And didn't the team respond? We didn't win the tie - a corrupt, cynical bastard ref did - but a tone was set that night, a tone that needs to sound again.
If you're there, let it out. Let them know, let everybody know. This is a special place. A place to fight to play for, a place to leave it all on the pitch, a team to dream of glory with. Give them 90+ minutes of what makes White Hart Lane So Very Special.
You know Wenger would love to have 1/10th of that passion at Stade Escargot. Make sure he never sees or hears 1/100th of what it's really worth. Sing up, you bums.
SuperStu: That's an awesome take on a great song. Well done.
By the sounds of it, some of Spurs more delicate players are ready to rewrite Tom Russell's alt-country classic, (Get Me On) The Next Thing Smokin', to suit their own Jello-spined natures.
All I can suggest is that Spurs fans take this musical suggestion and start...
"Fighting fire with fire...
Hold tight,
Wait till the party's over,
Hold tight,
We're in for nasty weather
There has got to be a way,
Burnin' down the house...
My house
S'Out of the ordinary
That's right
Don't want to hurt nobody
Some things
Sure can sweep me off my feet
Burnin' down the house
...No visible means of support
And you have not seen nothing yet
Everything's stuck together...
HH: The foreign affairs mandate here in Her Majesty's Timbered Dominion began in 1981 by dancing on a bar table, twirling my first Spurs scarf, to the sound of John Motson saying: "VEELYA! And STILL Ricky Veelya! What a goal!!!
Maybe Juande should have nice chat with Ricky and Ossie.

You will hear who we are on Wednesday when we muller you and put the final nail in your coffin, last season you beat us five - one, and the minnows from cyprus, there playing in the champions league, where are you!
a change in board or management structure would not immediately solve anything
So keeping things as they are will?

Christ, I have actually got a tear in my eye reading that!!! COYS and BIOYFBC!!!!!
It is clear to me that Pleat would be a good interim manager as long as he is not left alone in the car park with a seat in Cortina that reclines fully! He would need chaperoning to the carpark until he was out of the ground
I still fancy Roy Keane or Mark Hughes myself, they'd be good for the discipline

el - great assessment of the status quo.
This sums it up for me - A quote from Ramos:
"Only the club know the situation about what will happen to people," Ramos said. "I don't know because I don't control that."
Yes you fucking do, now put out a positive formation that might score a bastard goal, grow a pair of bollocks and be the master of your own destiny you fucking plum and WIN A GAME OR AT LEAST LET THE BOYS PLAY FOOTBALL!!!!
Oh and it would appear that Modric thinks the same, granted he has not exactly covered himself in glory yet but he has moaned about being doing it all himself in the middle of the pak and trying his best - thats a midfield with five players in ramos, sort your shit out.
we can play great fooball with these players - we aint champions league granted but we shouldnt be championship either - lets play the spurs way - COYS COYS COYS

Just a thought but why don't we try playing with two up front?
Ramos is doing my head in with some of his team selections!
Zokora is total toilet and should be benched!
Juande seems incapable of lighting his own stove.
He might be the most expensive "Guy" to be thrown on the Tottenham bonfire in early November.
