Tottenham's Saturday Boy: Corluka Done

Saturday, 09 August 08, 12:06 PM · Comments (88)

Do you need a pen, love?

I'm going to be really really brave, go out on a limb and announce we've signed Vedran Corluka.

Truth is of course that it's today's worst kept secret with everyone this side of the Great Wall Of China proclaiming his capture from Citeh.

Some have even been as specific as stating that the newbie penned his name at precisely 1315hrs this afternoon. Holy swiss timepieces Batman.

The hunt for the man responsible for this leak is narrowed down to 'a watch owner.' I sense a satisfactory arrest of the culprit is now but a mere formality.

Sadists might enjoy this http://www.bluemoon-mcfc.co.uk/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=1  an amusing Cyber Cafe where Sky Blue fans go to eat each other. Click on any of the Coluka related threads.

The real trigger is that Corluka didn't feature in today's friendly against AC Milan. Hardly conclusive in isolation but against all the other info flying around it is highly unlikely to believe that the Croatian is a City player any more.

Money? Don't know, not much that's for sure. Unlikely even with the ubiquitous add ons that Manchester City have actually made any money out of this. Contract? Worth less in reality than the staple that binds it, so who really cares?

Celebrated tipster Ben from the FTL forum says he has spoken to the man himself and... wished him well. Welcome to Tottenham, son. Where the personal touch is key.

Apparently there are work permit issues of which I have no understanding or even vaguest interest in. So don't expect an official announcement before breakfast Thursday week.

All in all a tremendous signing. Another ready to go player. Another signal of intent and another example of Ramos & Co. identifying what you and I could see was wrong - and addressing it.

Well done, chaps.

As I heard it the Ashton nonsense only ever reared it's head as a half cocked plan Wet Spam had to swap him for Bent. True or not, a really unpleasant thought.

80%? sounds over halfway there.

I really don't know. I am very sceptical as the initial stories were that 'everything was done' before the Euros and would be announced afterwards.

Clearly not the most accurate info to hit the streets.

That said, sign'em all, I say.

harry how do you know Ben the ITK actually spoke to Vedran corluka? I also read on the manchester evening news site that corluka still hasn't made up his mind wether or not he is going to join our great club. You also forgot to state that corluka was not present in citeh's official 08/09 squad photo. But what i would really like to know is how you know ben spoke to him? Cheers Arry!

I have no reason to disbelieve Ben, he seems like an honest type.

I didn't forget the photo, rather it wasn't (I was told anyway) taken recently so I didn't dwell on it.

I don't think it was ever said that it was done. Dan Ashcroft said in May that an outline fee had been agreed with the club but that the player wanted to wait and see what other offers came in (hoping for Milan).

I guess now as we end the summer the field is narrow, so that's in our favour.

That's fair comment on behalf of Ashcroft but others who are incapble of speaking in anything less than definates (which is why I like Dan's work - it's actually okay to say 'possibly') have been convinced it's 'in the bag' etc etc.

Hence me not joining in.

You'll get no arguement from me. That's good news.

Ben is a well established chap. No concerns on that front.

All I'd add is that the better of these guys offer information not only in good faith but information which at that specific time IS good. Things change, as in other less complex areas of life, so we ought not be looking for people to hang if info shall we say, 'goes off'.

Which is the joy of being me.

Hopefully on the bench, trying to earn their way back into the team.

They haven't been good enough to get us into the CL so far. They are worth keeping around but we can't be sentimental.

You tell me. And I'm not being cute. Ramos is clearly turning this lot into a real football club where you fight for your place.

I bet you this though. I bet this season there is a fly on a wall and he hears the words..

Pretty clear on Tommy that Ramos has told him he likes what he sees but wants more.

What you, me & next door's eldest have been saying for a good while.

Just had a gander on spurs 0S. They've got a couple of videos up there which are quite interesting.

1. Running man. Showing a few people warming up/down. Those include Pointy who now seems quite happy not hitting the back of the net ;) As well as Steeeeed and Teemu. I wonder how gutted they were to have a bid accepted for them and effectively mean that they were no longer needed at THFC, especially with the way the squad is shaping up. If anything, seeing players like Steed who was picked before them on many occassion, get off'ed, should make JJ and Thud realise how lucky there are. We want a passion in the players to bust a gut for us, its just a sentimental shame if they're not quite the right type of player or circumstances mean they have to sit out the revolution.

2. Gomes is answering the questions in Spanish and not Portuguese! Hole freholes! So the main language spoken on the pitch is going to be? I initially thought it was going to be a toss up between english and spanish. However now that the raid on la Liga has so far only yielded GDS, we only need to nick Kanjcar to put Croatian as a contender.

What with Corluka coming and hopefully Arshavin, Veloso and another striker (realistic?), I don't think I can remember a team with this much quality since the 80's.

Really excited about the new season (even the friendly tomorrow), not going to predict where we'll end up, but that away trip to Anfield right at the end of the season's looking tasty.

Veloso, Arhshivin and Corluka = extremely competitive squad. Genuinely. Thats not me being an optimistic Tottenham fan. I realise things will take time to gel but with ramos -who has shown over the summer that he is a man of few words but plenty of action - we can definitely overcome that problem.

Could this be the first team?

Bent/Berbatov

Dos Santos Arshivin Bentley

Veloso Modric

Bale Hutton/Corluka

King/Corluka Woody/Dawson

Gomes

This would be my team - though unfortunately Jenas seems to be a certain starter given that he is know vice-captain.

All i want to know is who we are definitely in for, and what the probability is that we'll get them?!

Also - this is by far the best fan site that i go on - really interesting.

What about predictions for the new season now the squas is (sort of) shaping up?

Can't see the Capel deal going ahead, Sevilla hate us over the whole Ramos incident and as i understand it have already rejected a bid over the release fee in his contract, mainly due to the (lack of) relationship with us. Would love it to happen but just cannot see it.

Still need to get rid of some players too - Lee, Rocha, Stalteri (will struggle there), Ghaly (too injured to go at the moment), and also Kevin Prince - Boateng. Should get some money for some of these - although even Fulham don't want Stalteri after his loan spell there.

Can't see the Capel deal going ahead, Sevilla hate us over the whole Ramos incident and as i understand it have already rejected a bid over the release fee in his contract, mainly due to the (lack of) relationship with us. Would love it to happen but just cannot see it.

Still need to...

Middlesbrough scout David Mills must have wondered if Arsenal had a right back playing given the amount of crosses Spurs target Diego Capel got into the Arsenal box.

I second that. fcuking Arse bastids.
Arshavin, Corluka, Capel, Veloso . . . we will be lucky to dign two of these. But which two? Is Capel really THAT good? havent seen enough of him, but i trust Ramos.
Any one else on here totally heartbroken when Jol got fired, i mean near tears, and the same when Defoe left, only now to be sitting with the mouth watering prospect of a serious top 4 challenge, if not better, next season???

If he was doing it week in week out, fair enough, but let's not pretend he's been some sort of midfield dynamo.

It's been 3 years now without any real consistency, in a lot of that time he's been nothing short of shit.

He's on borrowed time for me, if he doesn't make it this year he never will.

But who over the last 3 years has been consistent, not many but at least he's done more than most. Hes been the best midfield in the team by far IMO.
And I know people will start with Steed, but all he did was round in circles. I heard he wanted to get the tube to work but the first time he did it he got on the circle line and nearly didnt get off

'But who over the last 3 years has been consistent'

Exactly, that's why they've all been/being replaced.

Ramos is giving Jenas a chance to prove he can be the player we all know he could be.

I hope he takes it.

Sadly, Capel isn't an option.. why? Sevilla hate us and senor Ramos.. It's that simple. Even though it would probably be our best signing of the trasnfer window to date.

I think we'll be doing very well if we claim Corluka, Veloso and Arshavin..

Make it happen Juande n co.

Am I missing something? How good is Diego Capel? Do we really need him? We currently have either Dos Santos or Bale - both of them are extremely talented and show signs of genuine genuine class. Of what I've seen of Capel - which is fairly considerable - he's not all that special. Fairly good shot, reasonable crossing and skills that flatter to deceive. He's got a lot of energy and puts in a lot of effort - I will give him that. I would call him the Spanish Downing - in fact there is a patent pending on that idea. Downing is slightly better at crossing, Capel is (probably) slightly better technically. There is a reason they are both not consistently in the national teams. Bale is far better at crossing than both of them and Dos Santos is far better technically. Perhaps Capel good player but these two (GB and GDS) are are already class. Tottenham have (and have just got rid of) plenty
of 'good' players - if you want to push for the top four you need class.

Modric - class
Bale - Class
Bentley - class
Berbatov - class
Woody - class
Hutton - (could be) class
Dos Santos - class
King - class

Capel - Good
Downing - good
Pennant - good
Marlbranque - good
Jenas - good

Zokora - poo

The only creative player I want to see from here on in is Arshivin - he is class and has an end product (which good players do not (often)). After him (hopefully) all we need is a bully - a class one of course.

Remember that when considering all these players we are linked with. Class - good. To be honest I would not have been unhappy with Downing when we almost signed him in christmas. He would have been good - but he wouldn't have taken us anywhere.

Fuck - i bet Downing scores a screamer in the first match.

We'll still win 1-4 though - obviously.

I had to nip out before I could reply last night. The part phrases I could remember haunted me all night :| so forgive me for posting this. In a modern game where petulance, disrespect, greed and lies are all too prevalent, even amid all the genius, artistry and endeavor of the game, some footy blogs are simply a different 'class' (to use hekko's phrase).

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Yid, my son! COYS.

Irish Yid here really looking forward to the new season...Corluka provides some real quality where it was badly needed and versatile too...Agree with most others here in that we need a hard man holding midfielder, preferably in the Roy Keane mode and another quality striker in the Jurgen mode. Don't know enough about Veloso but if we could prise Cambonaisse(if thats how its spelt) away from Italy, for the right money, I would think he would be worth the gamble or even Gattuso ;) The striker problem is another story with Villa seamingly staying in Spain, definitely not Ashton maybe Santa Cruz or Huntalaar or really bust the bank on Benzema who is already world class. Robbie may have left for his boyhood heroes but I hope by june '09 he is thinking why the fook did I do that....Quality site Harry way above the rest and in your own immortal words BIOYC
P.s In K.Keegans words I would so love it if Barca sign Berbs rather than manure

Hear Hear. Ramos obviously rates him to make him vice captain. I know I have championed him and stuck by him over the last 3 seasons, unlike some. I agree, he really does need to step up to the plate now and be consistent, the 1 thing missing from his game, because we know he can be a fantastic player. I think that with the likes of Modric, Bentley etc signing it will make him raise his game. If it's good enough for Ramos, it's good enough for me.

On Corluka - quality. End of.

I see Kaboul is finally off to Portsmouth for ÂŁ6 million; great business.

6 days and counting; it's gonna be a long week.

It's not done yet. What I have learned over time following spurs is that we announce transfers as soon as they are done. Even before personal terms and work permits. As soon as we have reached an agreement with the club we announce it.

I think no other club is in such hurry as ours to tell the world what we have just brought in. But as always I trust Harry and I am sure that he is on his way, but once again; Nothing is done.

inspired by trembley i have put together a short poem on my thoughts for this coming season.

Waiting with anticipation for the season to finally start
Can’t wait to see Modric & Co tear the other fuckers apart
Begins at the riverside next Saturday, kick off three o clock
Jenas the vice Captain putting his knackers on the block

Give the lads time to gel some say, don’t get carried away
We’ll be put to the test against Roma, who visit the Lane today
Bent on fire in pre-season, the shape of the team starting to look slick
Wanted to punch that wanker Andy Gray, his comments made me feel sick

Always getting written off by every other team in the Prem
This could finally be the beginning when we stick it to all of them
If you score one, we’ll score two will be the way in which we play
Written off already by some but we’ll be the ones smiling, come the end of May

That pointy shouty bloke looking up at us from fifth with fatigue
Thinking “why the fuck did I ever leave the Spurs, they stole the Champions League
Ending hoodoos against manure and Chelsea, not a soft touch anymore
Coming out at full time at the Emigrants singing “wenger, whats the score?”

So fuck off to all the doubters, sorry to be so blunt
In the words of the great Harry Hotspur….BRING IT ON YOU CUNTS

Same old Spurs unless we:

* Stop playing players out of their position

* buy two Strikers

* buy a left winger

* buy a midfield General (or get Modic in the gym, to beef him up - a lot!)

* buy a center back

* buy a right back

* learn to defend, and play as a team.
