Villa In For The £6 Million Plus Spurs Defender

Friday, 18 July 08, 12:30 PM · Comments (143)

From Soho Down To Pompey, I Guess He Tried Them All......

Kaboul, the original wantaway wet weekend himself has been spotted in a courtin'.. with none other than Martin O'Niel.

My guy deep within the lower eschalons of the Bull Ring Brigade tells that our superstar defender that never quite was on the premises - yesterday.

Money? The object of the exercise was to up the Pompey offer of £6 million. So watch this space.

My take is that he looked good stuff once or twice, but there's more required than that to hold your shirt. On too many occasions he looked pretty desperate. The I want to go to Pompey interview sucked aswell.

Next.

After his supposed comments about refusing to go to Sunderland, good riddance I say. The guy has an ego the size of a small planet - his leaving gift should be a video of some of his howlers. He makes Pascal seem like a perfectly nice chap.

I say we could still do a lot worse than play him as a DM? Still, I know nothing. I presume the £23 mill means he's worth about £8m according to the figures being bandied about from up north...

You guys read about the Sunderland bid?

If so, im not so happy to lett steed go. He as a winger is a good thing. He is a very strong player, and hes dribling is decent. BUT the lad dont know how to shoot. The last matches this season he looked very sharp!

BUT if we let this lad go i hope we do sign both capel and Bentley.

FOr me it looks like we dont going to sign a awesome DM. We surly need one....

And if both berba and keane leaves, i really hope Ramos knows two new strikers. Im must say im a bit worried over the loss of those two..

What do you guys think?

He's practically the same as Dawson in defensive duties and far better with the ball and passing and also has a somewhat decent shot that can be worked on. He's also miles better than Rocha and Gardner. So why is he the first to go?
Any why the HELL are we selling Malbranque to Sunderland and keeping Jenas when Malbranque is a much better player technically and much more intelligent and works just as hard? That's one I'm very unhappy with. If he's selling Steem for something like 7-8m and replacing him by someone like Capel, OK then but I still don't figure why we prefer to keep a crappy over-rated player like Jenas who's only good against Derby and Arsenal reserves - maybe, he's being reserved for the Stoke and Hull games next year, with Modric then having a rest...

He's worth £7m, Harry's had enough touches off us lately, £7m for defoe is a joke.
Whatever happens were screwed, if we let Keano and berbs go then everything weve done over the last few years will vanish, Dos santos will not handle a full season in the premer league playing week in week out, he's a puppy a very good one but a puppy.
the whole team will have changed from last season, we'll be lucky to finish top 10, not having a go just being honest, pompeys squad and first 11 will be stronger than ours if we lose our 2 crown jewels, and lose them to the very teams were trying to catch then our board really can't expect Ramos to work miracles, dont get excited lads, we aren't gonna challenge the top 4, maybe the gypos but the other 3 are way to strong.
rAMOS LOOKS LIKE HE'S SHAPING THE SQUAD TO PLAY
4---2----3-----1 BASICLY 2 HOLDING MIDFEILDERS, WIDTH COMING FROM FULLBACKS, HOLDING MIDFEILDER STEPPING INTO THE ATTACKING FULLBACKS POSITION WHEN NEEDED, HE SHOULD PLAY KABOUL AS A HOLDING MIDFEILDER, THATS WHERE HE PLAYS FOR FRANCE.

stokey yid,

You've been at the yucatan too long mate. You're forgetting a number of key points here.

1. Pompey are managed by redknapp, thus anything above 7th place is unachievable
2. Pompey's great signings are cast offs from other teams - how can they be stronger than spurs if their signings couldn't make our first team?
3. keane and berbs will leave for a vast amount of cash - this can be reinvested.
4. our midfield has become infinitely stronger with the capture of modric and dos santos.
5. Villa, everton, city, west ham have all failed to strenghten their teams thus far - are we to expect much improvement form them?

Chaps. Most of these things will not happen. Unless we are getting rid of about 20 players and buying 50.

I suspect if Bob and Berba are going then Juande would have already planned for it and what we are seeing now is a bit of Horse trading.

We all need to calm down, relax and see whose at the lane when the dust has settled before we accuse Juande & Dan of a lack of ambition.

So Harry what happened to the seeing Bentley having a medical!!!!!!! We seem to be further away from signing him than ever. :(
I don't know why we bother to ever consider becoming a top 4 side when we end up selling our best players. Last season we scored over 100 goals. We do not need to sell any strikers and we have Pekhart coming through the ranks. They are on long term contracts, so make them stick to it. We have strengthened midfield and Modric will be a star. Lets sell some of the dross and we all know who they are to get our wingers and a holding midfielder and a good centre half and lets do it sooner rather than later even if it costs a bit more and get them integrated in the preseason Ramos set up so that we can start against Middlesborough with all guns blazing instead of the whimper we started last season COYS

The medical took place of course and it is still my belief that the transfer will take place. There's usually less to these things than meets the eye. This is an exception. I would call for calm on Bentley. With so many things to be factored in it would've been a miracle to see him holding up the shirt last week. By so many things I refer to their current goalie, our ex, Ar5ena1's 20% and that prat Ince of course. Stubborn little fucker, which is why he was so good at fighting on the terraces before his 'footy' career took off.

Sorry about the grammer chaps, was on my moblie.
Pompey's may have cast offs, but they are bloody good cast offs.
JD has scored in nearly every games he's played for pompey, Crouch is slow but a decent enough player, Diara, Kranjar, and Mumba,(spelling, lol) is also decent, plus Harry's tapping up that mini me gooner at chelscum.SWP,
Everton, villa dont really need to improve, there stability will see them in top 7.

Don't think for a minute just because were Tottenham hotspur that we will finish top 6, there seems no one to tie all our players together and that is with Berbs and Robbie still with us.
Robbie was the one last season that stood up and bollocked the lads when they needed it, when he goes, we are without doubt FCUKED.
Ramos has been told by the board to say were a plc and we have to balance the books, he may even understand it, but what it says to me is that were having to sell the crown jewels for £45m and your only getting half that to replace them.
I truely hope that i am wrong but i just can't see it for the life of me, whats the point in signing a new midfield without the 2 top boys where it matters in the premer league.
Teams will over run us with agressive play, they will sit and smash our small midfield to shit.

it's a comment designed to make Blackburn think we have no cash for bentley and that they should accept our offer or face having disgruntled bentley sitting on bench next year.

in addition, it comes in light of an offer from man united on berbatov. presumably this is a good offer and worth it in levy/ramos' eyes, therefore they're softening us fans in advance.

ramos came to the club under strong promises from the board. if the club suddenly pull the rug from under him he would be sorely p*ssed off, however, as it is, he seems rather content with everything.

wait until the beginning of the season to see what shape we're in.

absolutely no need to panick just yet.

Please remember old boy that we now have a back four as strong as 'no more nails', our midfield is undeniably improved and even if we lose our 'crown jewels' we've still got Benty and Pekhart. Add one world class striker a DM and to be perfectly honest no matter what JR has come out and said today - we will be challenging.....Honestly - we Yids don't arf know how to get our knickers in a twist in the silly season.

Stokey,

An English degree you may never earn, but you I award you a 2:1 in Common Sense from the University of Life.

This is my primary concern, that other teams are quietly building away and eating on the march we stole on them two and three seasons ago. We're not the shoe in for fifth anymore, and to deride Arthur Daley Redknapp for assembling an army of cast offs is extremely short sighted. He gets performances out of his rabble, and you can't fault him as a manager. I had my fingers crossed for him on the England vacancy, if we're fessing up.

I'm as nervous as the rest of you, but I am confident Berbatov and Keane aren't both leaving in the same close season. To the "we're just in it to make money" folk, whilst that's partially true, you don't need to go much further than Biz 101 to know that you don't spunk all your assets at once, and then predictably downturn, and expect to be attractive to investors/players this time next year.

I think the comments about your midfield been lightweight and been bullied are gonna be true. I can't see either of your new signings to good enough initially to be relied upon. And if you do loose your front two (Which I hope you don't!) I don't see how you will do anything but struggle. The fact you score a fair few is the no1 reason you've done well the last few years etc!

Also on the Bentley front Villa's bid was £15m so if its £17m they want I would have thought we will re-bid £18-20m for Bentley & Friedel.

He'll be our unless he's more interested in partying & shopping in London than playing football - in which case you can have him.

Nunchucks,
Your correct about the English degree, lol and I will gladly accept your 2:1 thx.
Rednapp for all his wheeling and dealing relised something years ago, in todays premier league there is no need to build for the future.
Club's only have to stay in the league to gain the financial wealth to last them until next season and then they start over again as best they can.
What's getting me is Levy and the board having a go at MJ last year for saying excactly what Ramos said yesterday, now i know he's trying to take the heat off us as a club and our players, but why sell Keane to liverpool, it just doesn't make sense to me.
I can understand Berbs wanting to go as he has always said he'd give it 2 season's which is fair enough.
But to strenghten liverpool as well is beyond reason, unless we swapped him for Kuyt plus £10m I just give up.
Even if we sign younger players like Huntlear( Arshavin is nearly 28)there not the finished article, were now saying to the Modric's of this world that we can't keep our players, so in turn why join us, other clubs pay better.
Mcmuffin,
Blackburn and especialy Ince are no mugs, they have a player that want's out.
They have no asperation's to win the league or get close to CL places like we do, they have 2 clubs who want Bently, all they have to do is SIT until we cough up the silly money, they know we have money and Ince probably doesn't care if Bently feel's hard done by, Ince is that arrogant he'd keep an unhappy player because they don't spend much so are not desperate for the money.

There has been substantial speculation in respect of the futures of Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane, including press comment from both Sir Alex Ferguson and Rafa Benitez. In response our Chairman, Daniel Levy has made the following statement:

"Today's public comments by Manchester United's manager, announcing that he has made an offer for Dimitar and is confident that the deal will go through with time working in their favour, is a blatant example of sheer arrogance and interference with one of our players. It is also probably one of the worst offences by any manager in the Premier League to date and is unbelievably hypocritical given his recent comments in respect of Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid.

"This comes after a series of events, dating back to last summer, which have shown Manchester United to be in breach of Premier League (PL) rules. As a result, we have today made an official complaint to the PL about the conduct of Manchester United. Benitez made similar comments in respect of Robbie recently and we made an official complaint to the PL about the conduct of Liverpool earlier this week.

"The behaviour of both clubs has been disgraceful. We told both clubs very early on that we had no interest in selling Robbie or Dimitar, respectively, and that they should refrain from pursuing the player. Both clubs arrogantly chose to ignore this request and we now have evidence that both clubs have systematically been working to prise the players away from us, outside of PL rules of conduct.

"Our subsequent position has been severely compromised by both clubs making their intentions widely known and indeed making contact with the players and their agents, without the Club's permission.

"I have absolutely no wish to sell either player and to date we have not accepted any offer for either. However, when a player's head is turned and their commitment is absent, particularly when they occupy key positions such as that of striker, they become a nega

negative influence in a team dressing room in which they were once a positive addition and influence. This is the situation we now have on our hands, with both Dimitar and Robbie having made it clear that they wish to leave for Manchester Utd and Liverpool respectively.

"Irrespective of the outcome and futures of Robbie and Dimitar, we are continuing to seek to bring in quality, talented players for the future, who want to play in a Spurs shirt."

That sucks about both your strikers but I have to say Kudos to your chairman for coming out with such strong words. Unless the PL or FA do something (anything!) to stop the 'top 4' poaching the chasing packs best players its going to be nigh on impossibly to break.

Either that or a shake up of the CL and Eufa cup - its insane that 4th place in the league brings in £20m more a season than 5th place. And its the Champions League NOT the Premier League which is to blame for this disparity and lack of competition at the top of the league.

As its Man U & Liverpool can anyone actually see the FA or PL doing anything about this though.

Have to say Harry at Portsmouth is probably the worst 'mouthy' manager out there though!

If they go they go and I'm sure whoever comes in won't be too shabby.

As I've said before our most important signing over the last 15 years has been Juande with Gus not far behind and great management produces great teams.

I have to agree with some of Madladdy's comments, specifically with regard to Daniel Levy's statement.

The Premier League have to do act against the blatant poaching of other club's players by both teams. I have no doubt that all teams have underhand ways of approaching players who are in contract at another club, but to be so vocal in the media as Benitez & Ferguson have been over the last few days is scandalous.

Lets hope that the Premier League act on this issue. If they don't we know who holds the power in the game.

Let's also hope that the Chairman and Manager have plan B & Plan C in action to bring in replacements.

Berba & Robbie, thanks for what you've done, now F*ck Off!!!

But I think you may be right, given the Spanish connection. I reckon we should publicly tap up Torres. 4-5-1 looks a good bet for next season or 4-2-3-1 when attacking? I'm still in shock.

These would appear to be the sections of the Premier League Rules that the northern tw*ts are contravening.

K.3. Any Club which by itself, by any of its Officials, by any of its Players, by its Agent, by any other Person
on its behalf or by any other means whatsoever makes an approach either directly or indirectly to a
Contract Player except as permitted by either Rule K.1.2 or Rule K.2 shall be in breach of these Rules
and may be dealt with under the provisions of Section R.

k.8. A statement made publicly by or on behalf of a Club expressing interest in acquiring the registration
of a Contract Player or by a Contract Player expressing interest in transferring his registration to
another Club (or club) shall in either case be treated as an indirect approach for the purposes of Rules
K.3 and K.6.

Section R deals with the disciplinary procedures.

Ban them both from transfer dealings with other Premier League clubs for 12 months. Sell Berba to Barca & Keane to some other foreign club.

However, he should have taken the moral high ground, just reported them, and said no more. There will be enough people in the media who will call Fergie a hypocrite so no need for Levy to sink in the pit with him and throw insults. Secondly, not sure why he had a pop at Berba and Keano suggesting they are now a negative influence. All he has done is confirmed these two have gone beyond the point of no return and have to be sold. The price for replacement strikers has just gone up as everyone now knows Spurs' are in dire need of new players.

I reckon Liverpool have more money than they are letting on, Benitez is an assehole he's trying to buy players as cheap as possible and not budge on his valuations and is also trying to get top dollar for his players ( Alonso and Crouch) but Spurs and Villa really have no choice but to sell as the players have anounced their desire to move (due to being tapped up. I hope it goes badly for both players as they have shown no loyalty to their clubs, Barry and Keane are key players at their current clubs but won't be at Liverpool, think Bellamy and Crouch or even Pennant to see what could well happen to Keane.

Remembering some of the formations Juande played last season I think he likes a fairly fluid formation with players breaking from all over the park. So I think one attacker will be at least one of his options.

Good on your chairman for releasing that statement.

Fergie is such a hypocrite. He has no right to complain about Madrid tapping up Ronaldo when he does it so blatently himself.

The man thinks he is above the law and is a total prick!

Regarding Berba and Keane,

I think Berba is a great player and will be hard to replace but Ramos is no mug and I'm sure that he has a suitable replacement lined up.

As for Keane, please dont take this the wrong way, I've always felt he is over-rated. If the offer from Liverpool is indeed £20m then I'd bite their hand off. I'd have him in the £10m bracket at most.

We've had the same all summer at the Arse and it pisses me off. Ade's situation is bad. I can't see a way back for him and it will take a long time for us Gooners to forget his money grabbing antics if he doesn't leave.

Anyway,

Keep up the great work HH, I hope all you Spuds on here know I've grown up now! ;)

It would seem Levy's charge is intended to secure a "tapping up" penalty fee from the northerners in addition to any fees agreed for either player. If the Red-nosed and goateed ones want to "settle out of court" so to speak, they will now have to pay over the odds. This is the best bargaining tool at Levy's disposal to extract a higher fee and force the issue. Spurs don't want this to drag on and SAF knows this (hence the "time is on our side" quote). This public move helps Spurs save face and command a higher fee while all clubs avoid protracted negotiations. Brilliant no?

Tremendous statement. Sure there's an element of downside protection. But what we have here is a General.

The mumble on the Keane money is £18 mill but I agree W7 that even this would be well above what I too guess his market worth to be. To wit, I underline not what I think he's worth, but the price to which the market will stand. That said, we all know £18 could be £12 with all the bits and pieces sellotaped on.

I'll vent my spleen on here soon, but for now Berba's work doesn't suprise me, but that pikey no good turncoat turnip head from Tallaght needs to explain himself and do so sharpish.

Lets all have some calm a second....

fair play, first of all, to levy. we do need to make a collective stand against the top four (although it pains me to admit that a%se@al seem to conduct their business quite privately by comparison)...

in the short term both players are leaving and replacements will now be expensive. having said that, as one chap mentioned before Bent has scored plenty of premier league goals in the past.

He looked a waste of money at that price originally but he still scored a few goals in his brief appearances. Also he has shown no desire to leave thus far and we ought to respect his desire to fight for his place at the very least. With a fair crack and better service he will score goals without being as pretty as berbs and keane. lets give him a chance...

i wouldnt be surprised if the boys have actually bonded better for all of this, like a siege mentality. This has rumbled on behind the scenes for several weeks only coming into the open today- yet the lads look happy and so they should be. We are fit and ready... if we dont make top four then so be it, id rather spurs were an honest team than take chelseas money and manures attitude if thats what it takes to get up there.........

Here's the Guardian take on proceedings a couple of days ago. Suggesting Man Utd were trying to avoid tapping up Berbatov and were trying to do things by the book. Cos the past nine months was just that, right? Berbatov looking sulky, fag hanging out of his mouth.

Wouldn't mind seeing if the nom de plume essexyid returns here to reveal his source when he claimed to have both the inside knowledge that Keane had expressed a desire to leave (and "validated" his post further by stating that Bentley's medical had not taken place).

Perhaps it was Rafa himself. Perhaps this guy really does have the inside line? Or it was a lucky guess. He could only be right or wrong, afterall. First Even money shot romps home.

Re: Mr Risdale,

I'm not convinced Kaboul was tapped-up; more put out to tender.

I don't get why the club don't just tell Berbs & Keane that they're not for sale, they're under contract and they'll be starting next season no matter what. That's if they are serious about not wanting to sell them. Put any chance of a move out of their head and give 'em extra training to keep their minds on the job.

I appreciate your point.

If a feckless employee makes overtures to another club out of desperastion he's a twit who's services can be readily dispensed with.

If the Chubby Oaf from Bindippers Unlimited and Sir Functional Alkeewholickson (apologies to LOTW) wish to do...

I have no problem with Levy playing rough with the big boys as long as no one thinks we are the paragons of virtue in the cesspit of footie transfers - after all, didn't you tell us that Bentley has already had his medical even though Blackburn announce today that we haven't even had an offer...

"Bentley has already had his medical even though Blackburn announce today that we haven't even had an offer accepted."

Please, come for me with something better than this.

The medical, Dr Quinn was done. What baring upon an offer being accepted does that have? Unless you ARE me. Which you ain't.

Either you know the way we nicked JR has nothing to do with players contracts or you are....

On an entirely different note props to Everton and Arteta for his personal delivery of a season ticket to a unsuspecting? fan.

Is it unreasonable for me then to expect Berbatov to turn up at my door in the morning then for a friendly chat and snap session over breakfast?

I'd have to let him in through the garage though, as so can fit his big head in.

Whilst I'm all for bandwagon avoidance (specially when it comes to the abuse of our players) the chairman has made a comment that Keane no longer wants to play for us and is a disruptive influence. From Berbs it was expected and he has had a seasons worth of insults and snide remarks, Keano was thought as safe because of his "here till they want me" remarks. So I say the abuse is warranted, the chairman isn't going to be making such accusations if there was any chance the bridge wasn't already long burnt.

Personally my take is that we'll struggle to replace them. All the people saying we should use the money to buy Hunterlaar, Villa, Adriano and every other football manager wet dream transfer need to stop taking happy pills. If these players were available on the cheap then a) The top 4 would be poaching them and b)why would they come to us when we're not in the champions league? I know we bagsied Modric, but i think we can all agree that this was our miracle for the decade (lets hope he sticks around longer then Klinnsmann). Doom and gloom aside I reckon Bent can do a good job, he's a proven talent, with passion for the club and for some reason the majority of the spurs faithful never took to him. Well hopefully we will now and he can bag a few goals. He may not be artistic as Berbatov or as pointy/shouty as Keane, but he dosen't faff about and whinge, he just tries to put the ball in the net. I didn't see him turn around and berate a midfielder last season for a misplaced pass while he was playing, which is not praise I can lavish on either of our soon to be former star strikers.

Ardent spurs fan that I am, it goes without saying that I still remain stupidly optimistic that Ramos will lead the boys on devestating assault on the league and cups. Sod the useless cunts that don't want to play for us, after this I don't want to waste my breath on them. Instead I'll use it to cheer on the lads that are willing to try and take us places.

Fuck off you whinging cunts!

As for Bent, how could he berate anyone else the way he played and with the chances he missed ? I don't remember the crowd giving him much stick.

ODM, I was refering to the hype really. Good players that they are, Berbs, Woody and Hutton have never had anywhere near the hype of Villa, Huntelaar and chums. I'm not trying to be negative, merely realistic. Would Liverpool be courting Keane if Villa were available? Would Man Utd be willing to spunk 30mil on Berbs if Huntelaar was looking for a move to the premiership (different player i know but it serves the analogy). Personally I trust Ramos and Poyet to bring in somebody who'll do the job and who isn't a megastar tabloid gossip regular.

As for Bent getting abuse, I don't recall him getting stick from the stand , but I can't remeber many conversations with spurs fans who had much nice to say about him either. He made some poor misses, but did Berbs and Keane, the difference is they were playing regular enough to atone for their sins.

I'm just going to trust in Ramos to make it all right, no matter which players leave us for 'champions league football / massive wage upgrades'.

This is a copy / paste of the transcript; I'll think you'll find that the significant comment is the 'this is the situation we now have'. Not wishing to be pedantic.

'However, when a player's head is turned and their commitment is absent, particularly when they occupy key positions such as that of striker, they become a negative influence in a team dressing room in which they were once a positive addition and influence. This is the situation we now have on our hands, with both Dimitar and Robbie having made it clear that they wish to leave for Manchester Utd and Liverpool respectively.'
