The footballing world was shaken to it's very foundations this morning as Coaching Supremo, reformed drunk and full time imbecile Tony Adams told the Independent newspaper, 'I don't know.'
The question was, did he think ...Jermain Defoe is 'ever likely to play for Portsmouth again?'
The case for Bellamy requires you to do a couple of things. Detach yourself from sentiment and then, double check that you've done so. This case is also, I should emphasise, largely comprised of the case against Defoe and and whole load of other stuff loosely headed 'Running Out Of Options'.
The not in my namers, me included - by the way, began clucking over the suggestion that the Welsh golf enthusiast might ever don the Lilywhite shirt a few weeks ago.
The nutter with the putter? No thanks....
I was a Defoe fan for a long time. So much so I can barely revisit those You Tube clips of him banging in goals for us from every damn angle known to mankind. Why? Because it stopped. He stopped. The magic dried up in a sad muddle of lost of form and Jol's incompetence as a tactician.
The form returned at Pompey and the neopolitan swordsman has, this season achieved a record of 8 goals in 17 games. Impressive stuff. Better than Machester United's Dimitar Berbatov and better than Liverpool's Robbie Keane. Added together.
So why would't it work if he came back?
Because the ship has sailed. Tottenham are incapable of consistantly playing the push and run football required to feed a player like him. How sad a pronouncement is that? But it's true. Darren Bent scored for fun against so many teams before this season. For Spurs, only the likes of Celtic and Norwich City have really felt his wrath.
Roman Pavlyuchenko is a striker with international credits. He comes to Spurs and spends most of his time failing to win headers.
The sorry reality is that Tottenham have lost their way and rather than throw the towel in on a lifetime's traddition of football it is time to make an honest appraisal of how best to save the patient. My advice is to recruit some scrappers and make a fight of it - because moaning about Bentley as we draw at home to Fulham and lose by two goals to West Brom is not a fight.
It's been discussed at length what we're missing. One large absent component is guts.
Can the Offside King bring us this?
No. He's a talented boy, his game lacks too much for the dire straits in which we now find ourselves.
Spurs, my fine feathered friends are no catch right now. Summer targets of Arshavin and Villa, winter ones of Heskey and Bellamy? Owen? Only in your wildest of unsatisfying dreams. Do the maths.
We need to fight and it will take more than half a dozen bursts of Jermain Defoe, He's A Yiddo to scare off the enemy.
Stop wishing and look around you.

ALTHOUGH HARRY NEEDS TO CHANGE THE FORMATION TO 442 AND HAVE MODRIC AS THE ATTACKING MIDFIELDER COS 451 LIMITS OUR STRIKERS AND SHOULD NOT BE USED ANLES WE ARE 3 NIL UP. we need more steel in the midfield who can protect the back four because we seem to easy to play against. i know there arent many of the defensive midfielder types out there and we arent a very attractive prospect at the moment but a proper ball winner than can put put in a challange would let the more creative players do their thing. and i for one would really would like to see jd back at the lane, he is good goalscorer and if we can give him the ball he will get us goals we need. but you are right that we need to see more passion, i want whoever plays to fight for the club and even if bellamy is a little toerag he is definately a fighter as is jd the yiddo.

Bellamy. I hate Bellamy. I hate his attitude. But... he's definately one of those players that when he plays against us, you cringe when he gets fed the ball. Maybe we need a bastard. Biggest downside'll be the hour long press conference of how he's reformed...blah, blah, blah. Defoe might be good. Bent's not greedy enough, we need a greedy striker who just wants himself to net, above all else. Otherwise we;ll be passing it around their 18 yard box for 90 mins.

The boy is a goalscorer end of. If he can score goals at Portsmouth why can't he score back here ?

I would like to start the JORDAN OUT campaign. As soon as he joined we started losing. Coincidence ? I don't think so.
Pavylechenko will come good if he has a strike partner- defoe would be perfect and Modric can then supply the service with more options and freedom.

Green Lane - your words are harsh but true - we are crap.
People need to stop thinking of us as an under-performing top 4 potential team, and realise we are are an institutionalised mid-table team who will win a cup every now and then, but with the potential to get relegated. As much as Bellamy is a horrible piece of work, he will get his own team mates going, even if they want to kill him. In the absence of Heskey, a short-term buy of someone like Fuller or Jason Roberts would at least give us some muscle.
As for Defoe, I wasted too much of my life watching him get caught offside and trying to come to terms with the concept of teamwork to think that he would be anything other than a complete waste of money.
He stopped...?
In his last 8 games for us, December and January before he was sold to PM, he scored 6 goals... He even made sure Keanes girly penalty count against Reading...
Defoe, please come home!

Please, have a think. As long as we have Zokora in the middle of the park we will be an average team. Yes he has the occasional good game, like against United for example, however a)he wasn't in midfield and b) his job was to mark Ronaldo, which meant he didnt have to think when he got on the ball - this is what lets him down all the time when he plays centre mid, he's a headless chicken, can't really tackle and is poor postionally. We need an inspirational leader in that position, someone that will not only scare our opponents but will also bollock our own players, and at the moment, we have nothing of the kind.

i agree 100% on the view that battlers is what is needed more than anything at this time and made my views on this subject known on this site only a week or so ago.for so long now we have had a soft centre and its no surprise that our best seasons came when we had the likes of carrick and davids adding steal to our midfield.the most successful teams over the years have had a very strong centre,manu with the likes of keane,scholes and now carrick,hargreaves/chelsea with the likes of lampard,ballack,makelele/arsenals best seasons came with viera,petite/and now liverpool are coming good with the likes of gerrard,mascherano,alonso.we have been crying out for some1 solid in the middle of the park for way too long,thudd,jj and modric provide very little steal in our midfield and this issue needs to be addressed imediately,my personal first choice and is a very realistic target if we decided to persue him would be kevin nolan,he ticks all the boxes in what we are looking for,very strong all round game,very strong character and leadership qualities and most importantly would not shy away from a battle.

Really!!! The squad is shite. No spine to the team (Dawson/King, Zakora/Jenas). Not meaning King, on whom we cannot rely and should find a proper replacement, the others are bottom table fodder at best.
A good DM is supposed to be able to read the game, anticipate, tackle, etc. but the only thing Zakora is capable of is running around for 90 minutes without achieving anything. Harry rather picks glamour girls DB and JJ instead of someone who will work their socks off like O'hara. And I don't agree that Modric can only play in a 1 striker set up...that's being too cowardly. Maybe the only thing Harry has up on Juande is his command of English.
Mabbutt, Roberts, Perryman, Galvin, et al must be having sleepless nights. What a shambles we've become.

Did anyone see Bellamy tearing Pompey's backline a new one? He scored two, made a third, and looked like he could run all night without stopping for dinner. I've never liked the no-neck little turd, but he's a fantastic footballer, it's undeniable. And that fuck-you attitude is exactly what we need right now. Defoe is fading fast, I'd rather pass on that one. Heskey is a donkey and always will be. To see him wearing a white shirt at WHL would be sacrilege.
Unfortunately we're slipping into the lower-table mediocrity that inevitably follows Harry Redknapp wherever he goes. When he's sacked in 12 months, we'll have a squad of aging journeymen and nothing set up for the future. And we'll have paid millions for the privilege again.
Can i ask why we've completely overlooked J2S since Harry came back... I figured that he was close to full fitness a few weeks ago- meaning he should be fit now?

When JD first joined he looked a world beater, six months or so down the line and he started looking very average. I'm sure we'd just given him an improved contract as his form dipped. Never looked the same player to me, too disinterested (?), constantly offside and one of the slowest 'nippy' strikers around (when did he ever out pace anyone?).
He went to Pompey and looked really good for six months, his form recently is gash and some of the Pompey fans I've heard, have started to wonder about him. He'd score some but not loads and offers zero other than a few goals. He'd be a different option to what we've got but I'm not a huge fan.
Bellamy has pace to burn, creates chances out of his sheer work rate, is a real first line of defence & I'm sure he's murder to play against. However he doesn't score enough is a bit injury prone and is a w*nker.
Personally I'd go for Bellamy although in our current plight either would be a start and I can't think of too many other options. I'd like to think we could pull off a coup like Steve Bruce seems to do at Wigan signing the likes of Zaki, Valencia and Palacios etc. Still think we need a LW and possibly a CM if we can find one. I would also take Glenn Johnson as I think he's quality (Hutton's out for ages) this would allow Charlie to play more CB where I think he's more suited.

Personality and personal feeling about Bellamy aside the key question is will he improve the 1st team at the right price. Judging from Harry’s comments and his initial bid for Dafoe reported at 4.75 million, we will not be paying over the odds for any player. A fully fit Bellamy with his pace, assists and finishing ability would provide the 1st team with another attacking option and threat. In a tightly fought relegation battle it could well make all the difference come the end of the season. That is the immediate priority… apologies, post to be continued….dinner has just be served!
We are a team of coasters, we get a couple of results and then think the job is done, its been the same for years. Bellamy may ruffle a few feathers and give the passengers a good kick up the arse. Bring him on. Bring on anyone who can improve our squad with ability and mentality.

If Harry doesn't give us success he will be on his way and then anew man will want to rebuild over again. I still remember Gerry Franci's prog notes in his first game in charge.. "We are in transition" we still are all these years later. We need manager who will be given time to build a squad not just a team. If it means relegation a step back maybe a giant step forward in the long run. All this talk of what we need is pointing out the obvious. It goes deeper than that IMO.

My opinion is based upon Bentley’s % of crosses into the box that find a fellow Spurs player. The vast majority of crosses this season have been too square and from too deep a position.
Way often his crosses fail to beat the 1st man or are bread and butter for the opposition defence to clear.
I am a fan of Bentley and want him to succeed. His conversion rate of crosses into the box that find a Spurs player in my humble opinion would improve if he attempted to reach the line and provide more precision killer ball than he has done so far this season.

Great to get a win (first for Bale in a Tottenham shirt is it?). Also good to see 'Arry go 4-4-2. I thought Bentley's delivery was both predictable and awful, though. He does the same thing everytime. Thinks he's Beckham, but he ain't shite. Can't put a in a descent corner and can't put his free kicks beyond the first man! I want him to prosper, really I do, but he's having a laugh if he thinks he's doing the job.

Chaps the derision of this man is, if nothing, OTT. Therefore here goes the argument for the defense.
As a DM he tackles well and is bursting with energy.
When he passes over five yards and tries not to overcomplicate things he keeps the play flowing and links defense, midfield and attack... after all, all he really needs to do is win the ball back and give it to those around him with more creative flair. When he does this his completed pass ratio is much better than some on here care to suggest.
Those lung bursting runs do get us out of sticky situations often and if Arry can get him playing the simple ball at the end of it (like tonight) they may become even more fruitful.
He is a fantastic utility man.
My criticism is his tendency to do something daft every now and again, usually by trying to do something clever. Zok keep it simple and ye shall prosper.
Oh, did I also forget to mention he has now also given his left testicle to the cause. Surely we can cut him some slack?

A cross delivered from the by-line gives the attacking player exactly that… a ball to attack.
It also provides the dilemma for the defender of having to make a clearance whilst facing his goal and at very least put it out for an attacking throw in or corner - A more dangerous final ball and is more likely to yield a result than Bentley is currently delivering.
I am not exonerating Bent or anyone else for that matter I just want to see Bentley improve his overall delivery and final ball – he could do this by working the by – line, mixing up his delivery and providing more unpredictability to the opposition defence to deal with.
It would please me nothing more to see Bentley become one of The Lane’s great players.

It’s not just about getting the ball in the box. It’s about delivering the ball accurately to the danger areas and provides an attacking threat.
Having watched Bentley all season his final delivery has been predictable and has not provided the opposing teams defence any major problems on a consistent basis. His delivery from wide areas is too deep and square thus making it too easy for defenders to clear up the field from the box.
Bentley did not set his price tag so I am not going to fall into the predictable trap of saying we should expect more for the money. I am going on the record by saying the player is responsible for his decision making and performance during games. Bentley needs to step up, add more to his current game and become the player he is more than capable of becoming.

Bentley is one of the most over-rated players ever to wear our shirt. He cannot cross a ball, cannot tackle, no pace, not a goalscorer. What can he do other than silly little tricks? Let's be honest even the Arsenal goal came from one of those tricks. They work once a season and I for one don't want to wait until October for the next one [in the Championship].
Add him to Zokora, who has all the same attributes, is a little quicker but less likely to score than Steffan Freund and we have 50% of our midfield contributing absolutely bugger all. I am amazed Redknapp hasn't seen that.
Whilst on HR, notwithstanding the Ghaly incident [the booing was quite shameful], his use of substitutes last night was terrible. We were only playing Wigan reserves, it was therefore a great chnabce to give KPB and AT a run out. Once we scored the opener the game was crying out for a player who could hold the ball and run with it.
Yid at work, obviously a cross that fails to beat the first man or falls into the arms of the goalkeeper isn't a good cross. You're reading between the lines too much. I'm just saying that just because we dont get a head on it, doesnt make it a bad cross. Could be a case of getting to know what runs our strikers are going to make. He laser guided it at times onto Roque Santa Cruz' head. They had the understanding. Maybe he needs more time to get that from Bent/Pav.
I still think he hasn't performed well for us, but he's still an improvement over Jenas on free kick taking duty.
Another New Coach, I totally agree with both points about Bentley not offering general play and Redknapp not being proactive in his subs. Perfect opportunity to get KPB or The Nutmeg Kid on, why risk Lennon? It was unnecessary.

It isn't American Football. We can't wheel Bentley on every time there is a free kick. I am not a huge Jenas fan but I'd pick him over Bentley every time and I have always thought he was better on the flanks than in the middle of midfield.
boys, so much wrong at my beloved spurs. but as HH says, first, the boys must show some balls, benty, bentley in particular. then we can worry about 1 striker, 2 striker. we do need 2 up top, but we also need zoks to play further up the pitch and a chip in here and there with a goal. the midfield dont score enough, some players are within themselves. JJ, Bent, Bentley, dawson, bale. these players should be making a difference to any team.

theres nothing wrong with the players we have got in the mid, jenas, hudd, zokora, bentley, lennon, kpb, modric, taarabt etc... we just need to pick a team week in week out as we never seem to be able to do that with our midfield.... i dont understand the playing of bale at left back, yes ekotto was injured, but he cant tackle, he has pace, gets passed people and a good cross, so surely it would make sense for him to p[lay left mid as we so badly need a natural left footer, he has the potential. Our defence has improved with woodgate playing consistently and dawson filling in well, corluka is class but looks a better centre back then right back, gomes is showing what he was like at psv and if he keeps it up then there is no need to go for a new goalie as he is better then anyone out there who is for sale. Just need 2 strikers and maybe a left sided player, pav is starting to look good but bent is useless and never gets involved in the game! No point in chasing players like bellamy as he has never actually done well at a club

For that little “Trick” Sir, he will always have a special place in my heart.
At 1 – 0 the game was still there to be lost even against “Wigan reserves”. If Harry would have brought on The Prince or The Genius at that stage and we went on to lose the game their confidence and progression at the club would have been stunted.
This was not a game for experimentation.
Harry did not gamble, and I for one am very pleased. The home win gave us a huge lift ahead of hugely important league rematch next week.

Great to see Pavlyuchuckdoris getting rewarded for his efforts; shame the strikers aren't getting rewarded for Bentley's, he really needs a spell at the same finishing school that Lennon's been to. Modric is clearly the front midfield part of our spine, now all we have to do is persuade him to stay long enough to link up with whichever CB, DM and Striker of similar class we get, should we get them.
