What The Blackburn Lot Are Thinking

Tuesday, 18 November 08, 06:56 AM · Comments (158)

Exhibit [A] M'Lud. A 'Lancashire Lass'.

The highly esteemed Blackburn Rovers Football Club Supporter's forum got in touch and here's what transpired.

The first chunk is their man Phillip's 'pre match prattle' so to speak - and if you click on the link beneath that you get the relevant page on their forum and so their responses.

I thought the 'who needs Eurostar when you have Tottenham Hotspurs - our portal into Europe. Bring 'em on' was good...

"When the Premier League fixtures for 2008/9 were announced in mid-June I wonder how long the odds were against the Spurs v Rovers fixture on 22 November being a relegation 6 pointer pitching 19th against 18th? Something pretty astronomic I would imagine.

Spurs at the time had done a lot of early shopping including snaffling the destroyer of England's Euro08 chances, Luka Modric, one of the hottest properties in Europe. There was disquiet surrounding Berbatov but Spurs seemed to be in reasonable control of the situation and the club was more famous for its embarassment of having an excess of £10m+ strikers than being in danger of having no target men at all.

Equally, Rovers were being linked with calibre of Manager targets befitting a club regularly qualifying for Europe from the world's richest league- Advocaat, Ten Cate, Laudrup et al as well as the most recent England boss and the guy many had tipped to have been an English England boss although the fans were totally disdainful of both McClaren and Allerdyce (me included!). And the transfer fund of £10m whilst nothing to disturb the Premier rich boys league was significantly more than Hughes had spent net during the whole of his time at Ewood. There seemed every prospect of it being boosted by the £5m compo yanked out of City before they could talk to Hughes and another £3m donation from the Walker Trust. Bentley was being a drunken fool in front of the Sky cameras on the Costa Lampard but surely a new Manager of sufficient gravitas would be appointed to sort that idiot out?

In the event, both Bentley and Berbatov departed and Robbie Kean jumped ship as well leaving both clubs looking at how Villa had managed to ride the Barry storm (and pinch Friedel which prompted the other Spurs/Rovers trade bringing Robinson to Ewood). More poignantly, when the dust had settled at midnight on 1 Setember, Rovers and Spurs stood alone in the transfer league table having made substantial and surely wholly unintentional profits from the previous two months' window of trading activity/inactivity.

Those of an economic bent would argue that both clubs' disinvestments in footballers alone would qualify them for tumbling from Euro tyros to relegation sweaters but as we all know, there is much more to the story than that.

Harry Hotspur (http://www.oleole.com/blogs/harryhotspur), a doyen of the football club blogerati and at times total pain in the side (and other parts of the anatomy) of Tottenham's owners and management and other Spurs' fans has kindly agreed to help enlighten us following on from Rovers' abject surrender and Gomes' special at Craven Cottage last week-end (and despite of, or perhaps inspired by, a bad chest infection):

1) Does 'arry walk on water?

HH:  No, but he does occasionally skim across the surface like a well propelled flat shiny thing.

2) How could Ramos be so fantastically good in Spain and a complete dud at White Hart Lane?

HH:  Despite a decent CV, that guy had too many things not going for him. He was as about as interesting to listen to as Stephen Hawking and his people skills were non-existent. Motivationally he had the midas touch in reverse. Never undervalue the fact that where he came from they didn't put the kettle on.

3) It must be so frustrating to be the best financially managed club in the Premier League yet you famously buy rubbish players every transfer window

HH:  Untrue. In the main, we historically buy good players and fail to get much out of them.

4) How is David Bentley?

HH:  He's stuck on level 6 of Dragon Quest SwordsThe Masked Queen And The Tower Of Mirrors.
OK - He's happy Ramos is gone.
My guess is he's looking forward to settling in, assisting more, scoring more and establishing himself as an England player
.

5) You are the archetypal marzipan layer club- you wrecked Rovers' team by buying our best player but Man U and Liverpool do the same to you. Are you going to join the cake mix or the icing?

HH:  First of all I want to make it quite clear I hate Jane Asher and when she was voted out of Maestro that was a happy day in our house.

There's a food chain alright. And it's built on the desires and appetites of the players.

I haven't got any time for the idiots that say a Chairmen shouldn't have sold Player X or Player Y.  Contracts or not you can't MAKE someone play for you.
At the end of the day clubs are at the mercy of the whim of their players
.

6) Paul Ince- should Rovers keep him or fire him?

Fire him out of a cannon.

Ever heard of the Peter Principle?
Your problem is who you would lure if he went?
I mean, we're frequently as rubbish as you, but we're never linked with the Ian Dowies of the world.

7) Who is going to get relegated this season?

HH:  West Brom are gone. West Ham would be nice and I always wish it on Fulham.
The mathematicians will start drawing up their shortlist at Christmas.
Newscastle would be hilarious and if their home form collapses they're gone.

8) Any special memories of playing against Rovers in the past? (I can think of one in Cardiff)

HH:  Would you be very deeply offended if I said, "None." ?

9) How many are you going to beat us by?

HH:  That's a generous question but I think a messy 2-2 draw is on the cards.
A game of two goalkeepers, perhaps?

Ah well, that's me told re my persistent criticising of Ince for selling Bentley or perhaps Harry is toeing the WHL party line.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

My recollections of Rovers at WHL include some cracking wins for Rovers not least the 3-2 at WHL which I think was the last appearance of the SAS together (albeit only for the 5 mins Sutton appeared as a late sub but enough to set up Shearer for a fulminating late winner), the 4-0 season ticket confetti game and Samba's wonderful late strike last season. But I can remember two very honourable 3-2 defeats in which Rovers played the Spurs off the park and still lost; 1965/6 and 2005/6 (the Bellamy/FSP double act where we maintained 85% posession for 20 minutes).

I also remember the 4-0 thrashing we took in the old second division in Jim Smith's wonderful season at Ewood and fear that is the precedent for Sunday as surely Gomes will be dropped.

In truth I can scarcely see an honourable defeat let alone a Rovers win this coming week-end. But if we do win, it will feel like Cardiff all over again.

Finally I asked Harry what prompted him to start the blog?

HH:  I wanted a wall for the wise and the witty and the winos to write on.

The pleasures and pitfalls?

HH:  The pleasures are endless.
The mob that contribute and make the blog what it is and are exactly the the sort of degenerate superstars you would want to talk to in the pub about your club.

The pitfalls are as in real life.
Dull people
.

What does the club think of your blog?

HH:  I'm sure senior personnel at The Lane couldn't care less about me. I'd like to maintain that relationship.

Good work Harry - you've got them worried...

Anyway this is why Gomes ballsed it up - either his twin brother's a Fulham fan, or it's a case of split personality...

My cousin lives about a mile away from Ewood (poor bastard) and after a few rounds of bitter I go and see the away fixture there most seasons. The place has about as much atmosphere the local labour exchange and far more empty seats.

You're right about Ince Harry. In over his oversized head. If we can come out swinging with pace and forward passing we will catstrate the Rovers. If we come like we did at John Craven's Cottage, I am worried. I can't watch corners against us anymore. Its bad for my ticker.

I say we start with Cesar and have Alnwick on the bench. Gomes needs a few hundred volts of shock therapy.

I am hoping that this season surprise inclusion to Im A Celeb turns out to be Gormless.

I think its best for everyone if he is sent to a remote jungle for a few weeks.

or dropped out of a plane.

Just no challenges that involve catching. not really his bag.

the Blackburnian sounds alright. but he is not wrong 2-1 spurs. Bent and Ferdinand.

My addled brain can't recall any memorable encounters between the two clubs, but does anyone remember a game at the Lane where Judas played up front, or have I made that clean up?

I think we're going to need more bite in midfield if we're to win this one. Maybe the inclusion of O'Hara or even the prince.

You know, I always fancied Jussi Jaaskelainen. Not in a count the legs and divide by two kind of way, you understand, but certainly in a unsung, underestimated between the sticks kind of way.

I was surprised when no move was made last year when he was dithering over his contract, but it appears that youth is the rub.

Remember the last time i saw Blackburn at home. 1995. Shearer scored both i think in a 2-0 loss. They won the league that year.

Unsurprisingly this isn't a fixture I usually want to go out of my way to see, but i booked this when Wendy was still in charge in the vain hope that my lucky streak would get us a win. I haven't seen Spurs lose at the Lane or on the road since a 1999 trip to Wet Spam.

So bring on Sunday....I've jinxed it haven't I

I may neen some help/medication, you decide but I realy do have faith in Gomes. I honestly believe that when/if we have a settled defence and midfield who don't conceed so much possesion he will be the world class Goalie we need.

And for the love of all things Spurs don't give him a hard time at the lane because that would be entirely counterproductive.

Now off to make an appointment with my shrink!!!

Not sure if dropping Gomes is the answer. He continues to make excellent saves on a regular basis, saves Robinson wasnt making. If we can get him to improve his decision making abilities, knowing when to come and when to stay on his line, when to punch ans when to catch, and how not to push the ball bac into open play after a save, then we'd be laughing. At the minute, everyone else is laughing at us, and I can't blame them.

I was in Krakow on my Stag over the weekend, which was excellent. Only down side was waiting on the Spurs highlights on Polish TV and having to witness that attempted save. Terrible goal, and all round terrible performance. Lets hope its better come Sunday.

Campbell just bagged one for U21's. O'Hara, Lennon and Pekhart also playing, worth keeping an eye on the game fellas.

You'd think a keeper that cost as much as he did should have already learnt the basics.

I went to Krakow for our recent game there. I'm surprised you're not thinking about knocking your wedding on the head after being among all those little Polish cuties.

Definitely a case of sending all the ropey ones over here.

Look, it's very simple; this is what we do:

------The Amazing Gomes------
Corluka-Woody-Alnwick-King-Bale
Bentley----Huddlestone----Lennon
-----------Lil' Luka----------
--------Dazzling Dazza--------

Stick with me, people. Basically, Alnwick generally scampers around a bit. And then whenever there's a set piece, The Amazing Gomes and Alnwick switch jerseys. Set piece over, switch back.

I may have to read between the lines a bit in the general FA rules, but so far, this is bulletproof.

Just read the comments on their site - and I thought some of us on here were negative! At least we get any negative and not just matter-of-fact negative like they seem to be. Blackbum, if managed and properly prepared for the game, have as good a chance as Flahm to getting a result - thankfully, I doubt Paul Ince is the man that can do that for them.

Hans Leitert leaving is a symptom that David Coles is coming to do to Huerelho what he did to David James i.e turn him into a consistently good goalkeeper. This is an interesting interview taken in 2004/5 whilst he was still in charge at Southampton. LINK

The key thing for me is his focus on the psychological aspects of a goalkeepers job. Hopefully he can instill some of this confidence and assuredness into Gomes' game soon. Probably won't be before next weekend, but long term if we were to get him in, this will be a good move imo.

------------
How do you prepare keepers for a game?

Mentally and physically, mentally obviously before game and throughout the week, physically obviously the same way. Usually we will go out about 2.15 before the game and we will warm up, jog, stretch once we have done that, my favourite saying is the ‘lets go to work' and then its straight into the handling drills we do. Short distance volleys long distance volleys, half volleys balls at a dip a swerve really everything that might happen to them in a game. We will go onto some crossing & shooting from long angles and then long distance shooting as you have seen the premier league you have got the likes of Tuguy, the Beckham's, the Scholes and Van Nisterlrooy all can hit the ball from great distances. Then we will work on one touch, two touch, dealing with a back pass, half volleying and volleying. Mentally preparing, talking to them about the week they have had getting the positives into them I am not a negative person when it comes to goal keeping.

Hi there,
Another classic encounter around the same time at Ewood. Rovers went 3-0 up in the first 15 mins, Greaves pulled 2 back before half-time and Rovers ran riot in the second half to win 7-2, which was (I think I'm right on saying), Spurs' heaviest league defeat until you lost 7-0 at Liverpool in the 1980s. Rovers were brilliant that day, Andy McEvoy scoring a hat-trick.
Looking to the weekend, 50 per cent of Rovers fans naturally want to win and the other half want a defeat to help push Ince towards the Ewood exit.

Stick with Gomes. He dropped the ball at the weekend and for a church-goer looks suspiciously wary of crosses, but if you look at the saves he's made this season already he's proved top-class. Some of his decision making needs looking at, but I sympathise with him too. He's playing with turnstile CB pairings and until we get some consisitency in this area there will always be a communication issues, meaning it's effing tough to boss the area. Looking through fantasy league keeper ratings yesterday and the boy is up there with the leagues top performers this year. That means little in the realities of 105 minutes we seem to play each week as the medical/dentistry teams spend ten mins patching the boys up, but it helps me to stick with the belief that Gomes is making more world class saves adn the same number of gaffs as Robbo was last season.

Get some confidence in him, try to instil some consistency in front of him (is it me or has Woody's confidence suffered) and get him bossing the area and we'll start to see how good the guy is.

One day, I will figure out the code I need to understand your posts. And when I do, I expect enlightenment of biblical proportions.

Good call.

I deciphered some of the early texts of Divine Davspur and so far have discovered the true whereabouts of the Arc Of The Covenant, an earring belonging to Mde de Hotspur that had been missing for some four years.

I am also able to keep cut flowers alive in the house for nearly three months.

Classic encounter from the past. 1963-64 at the Lane. Blackburn were top, we were second and the atmosphere - believe it or not - was electric. As usual we went 1-0 down, then played them off the park winning 4-1 to go top. I think Greavsie troubled the scorers. Funny that, they're one place above...

Hi there,
Another classic encounter around the same time at Ewood. Rovers went 3-0 up in the first 15 mins, Greaves pulled 2 back before half-time and Rovers ran riot in the second half to win 7-2, which was (I think I'm right on saying), Spurs' heaviest league defeat until you lost 7-0 at...

Blackburn the worst premier league ground (even worst than West Brom!) I've ever been to. I know a guy who paid £250 for his season ticket last year!

I remember Andy Reid getting thumped of that rubbish mug Andy Todd and not getting sent off!

I am looking forward to seeing us play without Modric as he has been shite.

Hope Gomes is dropped. Happy to give him another go tho when he sorts himself out. He is clearly uncomfortable at the moment: be it his ribs, his gums, his head!? Give him a rest and see what happens in December or next year.

Bentley has been utter shite since he left Ewood park. He needs to be dropped but probably won't be so this weekend is a hard one to call as Zokora will probably be playing as well.

Headless football will ensue. IF Harry puts Ekotto in from the start (is he available?) then we may not be let off the hook the way Pool let us off the hook a few weeks back.

We shlould win this game but with Bentley + Zokora in I am thinking a 1-1. If Ekotto plays as well, then our chances of losing greatly increase.....

Can't argue too much with the rest, but Bale needs to get it together soon. The left back position is quickly becoming a mare.

I'd play Lennon on the right and maybe O'Hara on the left.

And Scott Carson and Terry, what are you at? clowns.

Was meaning to write this last night, but stayed on to watch the kraut interview with their boss. Imagine a live stadium based BBC coverage where after the game they got Capello to talk with Linker, Lawrenson etc. Last night it was Joachim Loew talking with the german presenter and retired goalie Oliver Kahnt. I'd love to see say Michjael Owen on the commentary team saying, to Fabio "I would've put that Bent chance away you armani clad garlic breath olive oil mucher".

As for Benty's miss....well the slip was unfortunate, but I think it was his composure more than his balance that let him down. If David Coles can make goalies learn from mistakes, then I hope Sir les can do something with Benty's psyche.

What occassionally irritates me about Bents game include:
1. His lack of apparent urgency. Yes no one expects him to actually get the ball when he chases the defenders down for it in the final third, but a bit more aggression and short distance sprinting would do him the world of good. It would make defenders more jittery and could force an error.
2. His demeanour when he's chasing them down is of a nice enough bloke on the opposite team that you'd be happy to have a pint with at the pub after. I'd rather he looked like an angry hungry rottweiler that would more likely crunch the defenders ankle in, than not get his ball.

He's clinical enough on his day and he does have good awareness of space and available runs, but last night he made a few positional decisions where he left the guy with the ball hardly any passing options to him. If only he put that goal away, it wold have been 2-0 and Bent would have been the talk of the town. As it is we have to have Terry as the talk of the Clown after his dog eared attempt at trying to marshall the ball to Carson. It was his captains decision to make Carson come to him rather than back pass or knock the ball away that was responsible for their goal. Yes it was a very good header to get the winner, but he's still a dog.

With you on Bent, he loiters among their backline waiting for a through ball to sprint on to.
If the ball doesn't get played, it makes him look clueless. Needs to communicate more as to where he wants the ball played.

The Domestic Goddess, 48, was dressed in a glorious red strapless gown for a fundraising party at Banqueting House in Whitehall, London, for the NSPCC.

She was joined by fellow mums Sophie Ellis Bextor, 29, and Claudia Schiffer, 38.

Thats a feckin shame if you ask me. I like a coach with an actual philiosophy on how they should play and the whole psychological/mistakes focus was really selling it for me.

Trembly,
Judging by these two interviews, I can't see him having a philosophy on anything. He's been on the F.A.'s coaching staff for 6 years, yet he's still only coaching the U19's.

Why can't we spend a few of our Robbie Berba millions on the mighty legendary Ronaldo yes Ronaldo. He could lift the club similar to how Davids inspired our young champions league pretenders. Im sure Gio dos Santos would be suitably in awe. Make it Happen Levy, merry christmas

FK, the bloke with the philosophy I was referring to was David Coles (Please see my entry above #44 and HH's reply #55 to read quotes or view link). As for Tony, if it's true he's coming back to coach then I hope he's got something in the bag other than a pair of boots, gloves and an isotonic Lucozade sport. These articles you linked to don't really show much in the way of something to look forward to :\ I'm a bit sad by this news even though last week I never even heard of David Coles.

Trembly,
I read and understood your post, and like you , liked the idea that a potential GK coach (Coles) was thinking outside the box. The point I was trying to make, was that Parks doesn't appear to be much of a thinker. Hopefully we already have the services of a sports psychologist, however given the lack of confidence shown by some players we're yet to see any evidence of it.

Seems I have started something of a debate with this one. I can't say either of the two of the mentioned coaches would come to mind when thinking of a potential GK coach. Infact, I had never heard of our last one and dont think i could name too many. But surely with some of the greats we've had, Jennings, Clemence, and recently Keller and Sullivan, there are club men out there who could fill the void. Although, maybe replacing Gomes with Given is the simple answer.

On a more serious note, given Mods injury, is Harry gonna play JJ in the hole, allowing Hudd to boss the centre?. I'd stick Jamie on LM and Azza on RM with Zok as DM.
As Ledders doesn't appear to be matchfit, in the words of HH "Ledley is sweating up like Mido in a Wimpey" :D , Mr Composure, our Charlie is my choice as CB partner to Woody.

Harry's given Zok more starts than Jamie at DM, so he must rate him higher. Jamie gives us better balance as LM, so I don't see Fraizer there. I'd use him for impact off the bench in the last 20, Harry's used Azza in the same way, so he may opt for Bentley to start.
