Stoked (stōkt) adj. Exhilarated or excited.

Friday, 17 October 08, 02:21 AM · Comments (304)

'Hitler... there was a painter! He could paint an entire apartment in ONE afternoon! TWO coats!'

It's all got rather biblical. The faith of Tottenham's support has been sorely tested. And as Sunday's tea time fixture slowly approaches there's less silent contemplation and more talk of blood sacrifice.

You get the sense that everybody is hanging on, waiting for a sign. Should Spurs lose this, it could well be one more usually associated with the front window of a B&B.

'VACANCIES.'

The performances so far have been largely second rate. Softly spoken ex moustache owner and part time pundit Mark Lawrenson has become a stuck record. 'I don't think Ramos knows his best team.' He's missing the point.

I think Wendy does know his best team and unfortunately for all of us, it includes players we have sold and ones we failed to buy. Additionally, the enforced chopping and changing of team selection has been one issue, but the abysmal individual form of players is the hub of the problem. There is undoubtedly crisis at The Lane. One of confidence.

And so at the risk of earning a Phd in Pointing Out The Bleedin' Obvious the answer lies is in galvanizing what we have. That will require excellent communication and motivation. We look sorely lacking in both departments.

We've all warmed to Poyet. No top flight experience, but forthright, honest and unashamedly open. Ramos it has to be said is looking like a man who's had the carpet pulled from under him. From several directions. And Levy it will be argued is too difficult to see due to his cunning use of human shields. And what then of our Director of Football? A man sat in the green room of the Colosseum simply waiting to hear the words, 'The lions are ready for you now, Mr Comolli.'

So this season has deteriorated into a rescue mission. To make it back behind our own lines with a wounded comrade and deliver enough that the medics can save him - with some extensive retail therapy in January.

One Spurs fan said this week, "Our next league game is at Stoke and playing away might feel a little easier for some of our team right now. At home, you feel the tension on the pitch and there are those who might prefer away games, where there's less expectation."

His name was David Bentley.

Roy keane would transformn this club from top to bottom, he would get the best out of every player - least when you go and watch you couldnt fault the effort the players have put in - something that has been missing this season and last.

the players are good enough to be playing better - getting results.

i agree some of the players that comolli has brought aint up 2 standard, BUT

the players we have are good enough to do a lot better than what they are doing - thats not comolli/levy job its down to Ramos and Gus to sort it out.

he is young and hungry, he would give 100% in fact more than 100% to the club.

some ppl dont like him, i dont care, as long as he produces the results on the pitch.

as said he knows what is required in prem league + is a european cup winner and would know the style you have to play in europe.

he is well renound, players have a lot of respect for hin and could easily attract europes best to the club.

the one thing i admire about him, is he calls a spade a spade, which is why i respect him.

Roy Keane hasnt pulled up any trees at Sunderland.

However he understands the rules and is playing by them , get solid premiership experienced players playing an sensible no nonsense formation and play everyone in their own position = not particulatly inspiring but effective premiership safety

Ramos has come in and tried to rewrite the rule book and fight the blood and thunder of prem football with airy fairy fancy dan champagne charlie pass it square oh look how clever and continental i am bollocks.

Roy Keane may do better in terms of not being the worst team in the prem, but he wouldnt have the nous to threaten anyone of note.

he hasnt been given the chance to break into the top 4. he is only at sunderland - there aim last year was survival - which he done - he has improved them this season...and should do better.

in terms of players - it is very difficult for him to attract players to sunderland - spurs however would be different.

Same personality. I dont see enough of City or Sunderland to make an assessment.

If i were to guess i'd say Sparky is the more cavalier of the 2. Taking into account scorelines and the fact that he's turning out Robinho, Elano, Petrov etc.

Does anyone else feel bad jumping in Ramos' grave!? Worryingly i dont, my confidence in him is all but gone.

Thanks to comoli Jupitus Gus and Rambo have no alternative but to make do with the tools at thier disposal. However one gets the idea that the once finely tunes Rolls Royce engine has blown a head gasket, and some of the tools supplied by mr C are in Imperial standard, not Metric.

If spurs were to launch an approach for Keane, Sunderland may not like it, but Keane would be tempted and would seek to join us, Keane wants to do the the best for himself...managing spurs is bigger than sunderland...so would join.

Gents,
Reality checks all round.
You can have as many pin the tail on the donkey competitions as you like.
Ramos = £15 million golden parachute.
Comolli = £1 million golden parachute
Who do you think our balance sheet obsessed leader is going to blame first?.
...

We'll be relegated before the final compensation packages have been negotiated.

Say Levy by the time Levy has nailed the deals down to £14.5m to £900k respectively we'll be gone! ;)

I'd defy old red-nose to cope with replacing berbatoss & psb with Pav & Fraizer. We'd look like a top four side if you reverse that. How is this Wendy's fault?.
Sure, he makes some strange tactical decisions, but last year he was the new f*ckin' messiah.
Have a little patience for...

berb+keane were a loss yes, im not disputing that.

however, the team should be performing better, the players dont seem up for it, apart from hull, we have hardly created any chances for the front 2 (so i do not blame pav/bent/fraz) too much.

ramos is a great manager - however sometimes managers do well at differnt clubs/countries, he may not just be for tottenham,

im all for patience, but how long to you give it, next game, 5 games....

Spot On.

He will be given more time than most of his predecessors due to this. And personally I think he should be given time, selling 3 of the best strikers in the league and replacing them with a sub, a kid and a non-english speaking player is a recipe for a relegation battle.

Blame should be with Levy a/ For letting Comoli sign half the crap we currently have playing for us and b/ For having piss poor negotiating tactics.

Ramos needs time and the fans support. For now.

We'll have more balance when Hutton returns and Charlie develops as Woody's partner. Midfield is a mess, but Modric's confidence will have improved with his Croatia goal. Lack of a decent LW and DM are again hardly Wendy's fault, but O'Hara's playing better than expected. I'd give him at least 5 more prem games, but do a little fishing on the qt.

Ramos has a lot of mitigating circumstances which is more than fair enough.

I have a horrible suspicion that the players are motivating themselves for the big games. I hope im wrong.

Does that explain the cup form? I haven't a clue. I saw yesterday that is we took our u form into the prem we would be 3rd!

In my eyes, this is not winnable game.

Even if we thump them say 0-10, then although there'll be all this paper talk about finally gelling, getting off the bottom will be dismissed as simply being only able to beat a poor side and one that was among the favourites for relegation when the season started.

If we bore draw or lose, then the medics had better be on alert for transfusions because there will be a blaming bloodbath of tsunami proportions.

The first winnable game is a week Wednesday when we visit the Emptycrates. Beating the scum would sate even the most famished of fans, two-bit journos, and so-called expert pundits alike. A good result here would really be hailed as a sign of turning the corner, gelling of the team, increased optimism! The current likelihood of getting said result - slim to none, but its better odds than many seem to give Juande to still be here by 1st Jan 2009.

Beating the whipping boys last year wasn't a major turning point, so I don't see why I should get excited if it happens again this year. Its past time for the boys to pull their socks up and talk about getting motivated. All I expect is a bit of professionalism, a performance, a job done, clinically. If I wanted to experience highs and lows, I would have gone to feckin Alton Towers. I want rational, methodical. I want an army. I want the YID ARMY to finally show themselves on the pitch.

As for all this other get this bloke in or that bloke out bollocks, there's a time and place. To be truly effective, the timing of the substitution as well as the quality of the sub lined up has to be perfect. Bitching and moaning like little puss*es does bugger all. Roy Keane? Give me a feckin break...one minute we want the best in the world, and next we're looking for unprovens to break top 4? FFS :?

Thought we showed a bit more fight against Hull. Undone by a fantastic goal and then the shutters went down. I was disappointed with the lack of guile and telling pass from midfield, and the running off the ball up front was abysmal(psb used to make acres of space for berba). Still, i'm confident we'll beat stoke and predict 2-1. COYS COYS COYS

Don't go just yet wayne. what i'm trying to point out is the nature of the beast. we had a relatively successful unproven in bmj but he couldn't/wasn't given the extended opportunity to take us past 5th. so we get in ramos and what everyone was clamouring for - a 'proven manager'. so now, because or a series of calamatous judgements across the board, be go back to unproven? Everyones a feckin contractor and they want the job to build rome in a a day. This is precidely why we're in the predicament we're in - lack of patience, lack of unified pulling in the right direction, too many personal agendas.

IMO the worst thing to happen to us in the last 3 years was not the loss of carrick or berba or psb, nor was it the failure to sign arshaving, huntelaar, veloso; it was the loss of frank arnesen whom jol had a spankingly good relationship with and who shared a vision.

Its not that I don't rate roy, its just that I'd prefer to see spurs with an actual plan than simply chopping and changing again. If it means we simply aim for survival this year then so be it. We'll just have to make sure the lessons are learned for next season. and the one after that.

I agree with what you're saying, but once the confidence of the manger from the fans goes it soon transfers to the players.

Add the fact that most of these spoilt twats (the players) believe everything they read in the red tops along with trigger happy Levy, I think he's got less time than I or you would like.

Unless of course we start spanking teams.

Blimey

Wayne really does know how to put the cat amongst the pigeons doesn't he??

Its of course all speculation but I reckon Keane would do well at Spurs. He gets the best out of the players he has and he aims to play football the way it should be paid. He wouldn't take any dicking about either.

Thats by the by though. The real business is Stoke away. I don't really know how to call this one. A win is long overdue. This rot CANNOT continue, the management know it and by f*ck the players should know it too.

So what Stoke play the long ball and are built like boxers. Spurs IMO have a much more talented bunch of players than Stoke and with the right application we will beat Stoke.

It will be tough but I think this may just be the game that could turn this season around. A hard battling performance and a win could push us on.

I'm not even thinking about losing, AND NEITHER SHOULD THE PLAYERS!

Lets face it, all English teams have aphysical presence about them.

Which maybe leaves Arsenal i guess. Cant see us getting 39 points against Arsenal. or even 1 come to think of it.

This could be a defining time in a successful dynasty like red-noses. Man ure stuck with him through lots of early disappointment, i only hope we possess the marbles to do the same.
Pragmatism is the order of the day, and Stoke is just another stepping stone. We all dream of playing with flair and beating the best, but the chavs, with all their money and talent, still grind out wins against the minnows.
We've had our share of false dawns and disappointments so we should be able to deal with them with a little more calmness and clarity.

That speech reminds me of a scene from Family Guy

The scene - Egypt during the construction of the pyramids. Two Jewish slaves are being whipped while they lug huge rocks up to the pyramid.

One jew turns to the other and says;

"They say that all peoples must go through hard times. This IS our hard time. From this moment on its all plain sailing for us Jews!"

The morale of the story. Supporting Spurs will NEVER be easy. Nothing will EVER run smooth. Its just the way it is. Those are the very reasons we support Spurs. Because, With immense Glory comes insurmountable pain.

Is it really that bad? Have they really lost faith, or think they know better? For me its all about a measure of communication. Is there sufficient understanding between the players and the manager? At present it seems not. Or if there is, then either the players aren't good enough to carry out the generals orders, or they simply don't understand the orders in the first place and JR is persisting in trying to get them do things they can't quite comprende.

I'd be more than happy if we deal out a spanking, although it would be better if it was with was a session with a supermodel than simply a stokes local 'glamour model'. ;)

I reckon we'll line up with JJ in midfield. I'd give Lennon the RW position as his pace could upset Stoke. Bentley's crosses will be wasted. Stoke are big at the back and Bent and Campbell aren't good in the air.

Pav is out injured isn't he?

Congrats mate. A little boy no less. Have the Spurs baby grows been oredered yet?? At least you have had the youngster to distract you from Spurs!

Cheers Jamie.

No new spurs kit just yet, wouldn't want to necessarily associate the year of his birth with a relegation fighting season of failure. Will be more happy to get him one with a UEFA cup winning logo on the sleeve though ;)

New profile pic? What made you choose to change after all this time?

I know even before my niece was born my brother had a Spurs babygrow ordered and the Spurs bottles too!

The profile pic was changed due to the current slump Spurs are in. We are in a battle, nay a war. Every game must now be treated with a do or die attitude by both players and fans.

There is to my knowledge no finer wartime leader than Winston Churchill;

'We shall fight on the seas and oceans,
we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be,
we shall fight on the beaches,
we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,
we shall fight in the hills;
we shall never surrender.'

Makes you proud to be British reading that ;)

If only one of our current crop of players could stand in the dressing room before the game and inspire the boys to victory.

Hadn't read that about Pav, still, peas from the same pod as Gus pointed out. Lennons pace might trouble them but i'd bring him on when needed, at least Bentley can pass. JJ imo hasn't done enough to justify his place, so i'd bench him too. Wendy seems to love him though and he'll probably play :\

Sounds like Hutton's in. If that's the case that's great news. Things could turn around....assuming someone at the other end starts scoring for us.

I'd love to see king and woody at center back Bale on the left and Corluka move up to DM.

Excellent Post, I totally agree.

I am still really dissoed about Arnesen and with Jol: I think we fucked up there big time and I have yet to warm to Ramos who's first of the double UEFA's was won by a pubic hair's breadth and courtesy of a slice (pardon the pun) of luck, from Malbranque's (?) boot. An own goal so early and some dodgy reffing in Spain fixed us proper, up until then I though we were playing some of the best football I've seen at THFC for many years.

However we have what we have and we need to make the best of it and not compound errors and/or fail to learn from past mistakes.....in fact learning to learn from our mistakes might be a good start!

fingers crossed, and if Hutton is back, then that's surely good news.
He strikes me as the only available player we have in our squad with any real balls. well, apart from the ghetto prince, but he's to be dis-counted, as a direct result of his shitness.

Ghaly?

Surprisingly, I would welcome him back without a second thought to his "silly" tantrum. It's obvious he never intended to insult the club or the fans, he just overreacted. I no doubt sense he regrets it immensely. I'll never forget him playing on after gettin' his teeth kicked out against Portsmouth, not to mention his goal against Chelsea in the FA Cup. That young man has balls and heart, something our current squad is sorely lacking in.

Balls and heart.

What a butcher would call offal.

But hey, it's easy to mock.

I think he can be a fantastic player, but consistancy is the one. That's why he and Taarabt are still knocking on the door and not walking thru it.

It's a bugger when you're this frustrated but I can see why they aren't getting played - despite how weak the first team are performing.

Usually i am quite optimistic but today has finally pushed me into the dark shroud that is Spurs-pessimism!!!!......At times I thought we were awful today - particularly the second half. We are already playing like a down & out team and from somewhere we have got to shrug this off and get some serious points on the table, because before we know it Christmas has come and gone and we'll be in a relegation fight and I dont think we've got the lads who can stand up and fight. It's obvious that the lads morale is at an all time low and it's down to Senior Ramos & Gus to pick them up. But im sure some of the lads are thinking (I know I am) "how long has Ramos got before the board start doubting his capabilities."

Where do you all stand on the management position?.....Do we stick with Ramos or do we got in someone else before it's too late?????

Absolutely gutted. Some of the boys gave us 100% today - Gomes, Hutton, Woodgate, Corluka Lennon. The problem is that some of the boys did - where were Jenas, Bentley, Modric,Bent?
We need a manager that can get all 11 players playing as a team and battling. Ramos evidently cannot get us out of the hole we are in - he has to go. Forget pretty football, we've got to earn the right to play pretty football. Forget the UEFA Cup this week, put a reserve team in and keep the best players for our relegation battle.
Can someone tell me why Commolli is still at the club?? It's because he is Levy's man. Therein lies our problem, greedy, profit before anything Levy.

WHEN Ramos goes, we should pull out all the stocks to a world class manager, perhaps in the mould of Gullit, then we can sign Pat rice or Rijkaard as his number 2, besides Gullit and Rijkaard played together, it just makes sense, very simple but shrewd.

Feel bad for Corluka, but the way Gomes always rushes out to punch the ball, this was bound to happen to one of our defenders. But why was Corluka even playing when all the talk was that King was fit again? And where was dos Santos? Did he run into Ledders during the warm-up knocking them both out?

Not that either would've made much difference, when you've got a 10-men team and a midfield of Modric/Jenas/Bentley (Lennon actually played like he gave a damn).

JJ's free kick could've salvaged us a point (which still would've been a joke v Stoke), but his effort sums up his play this season - his talent and heart are far less than he believes them to be.

Bentley has been shite since he's been a Spur, begging the question.. Why did we buy him (DC?) when we already had Lennon on the right and it was clear to anyone with a brain that a left-winger would've been more prudent.
Like Pav, Modric seems lost in translation, like he has no idea how to play. Thought Corluka would help him settle, but that plan looks right scuppered at the moment.
Maybe Bilic taking over could help, but that's another gamble, and would again force yet another squad shuffle. Second thought, maybe this wouldn't be so bad. On today's evidence, it's clear the sum of this team just isn't equal to its parts. :\

That was so frustrating again, good possession but absolutely fuck all up front.

I thought the ref had a bit of a match to forget too...Dawsons sending off surely will be overturned.
How did he indicate a minimum of 11 mins injury time to play, theres a sending off, and he blows the whistle at 11 minutes and 3 seconds!
The pens and sendings off are one thing, they are just his opinion, but the time played is easy measured, no excuse.
Mind you, he could have played 25 mins extra, we were never looking like scoring.

Is it time for a change of manager? I hate to say it, but it probably is, but only if someone better is lined up, and it don't look like thats happened. Ramos will be safe, especially if DC has the job of looking for a replacement!

We cannot keep changing managers. This guy is still a highly rated coach and the manager merry-go-round has a simple rule : "the faster it turns the worse your team becomes".

Actually most of what the team has been doing in the last few games has been good. The main problem is we are not scoring goals. If any of the 3 great strikers were still here or someone like Owen or Yakubu we would not be in this position.

The other obvious deficiency is the lack of leadership and as much as everyone loved to slag off PSB he did roll his sleeves up and cajole the rest of the team. I am struggling to think of anyone in the squad who does that outside of Ledders and young Jamie.

We all know the problems have been caused by our activity in the transfer market and that is not Juande's fault.

I believe in Ramos and I am sure we will come through this.
