Who The ****ing Hell Are Burnley?

Monday, 05 January 09, 03:48 PM · Comments (351)

Summerspur's Greatest Hits Part 2...

Hardly a sophisticated declaration of intent, yet one that needs issuing given our troubled times.

We've been mucked about and been mesmorised by almost equal measure (on a good night) this season, but it's imperative that we approach this ambitous and not entirely unaccomplished collective, in the appropriate manner...and duly smash them up.

Can I shock you? ...I like wine.

Partridge to one side, I hope Hossam Ghaly will start. I know he will be in the squad. Jenas, Ekotto, Bent, and Huddlestone are all out.

Let's comprehensively clout this lot. How cool would it be lf both Ghaly and us fans were instrumental in that? Come On You Spurs...

Anytime goalscorer? Woodgate at 8/1 is tasty enough in terms of a,  will pay for your beer for the price of a beer... type bet.

 BIOYCS!

Woody has scored 3 goals in 7 years and one of those was when the ball smacked him in the face and went in.

No, spend your money on a cheap bottle of plonk.

Dos Santos should start up front with Pavlyuchenko. Galy and KPB should start in the centre and Taarabt should get his long overdue chance on the left wing.

GK. Gomes
RB. Corluka
CB. Woodgate
CB. Dawson
LB. Bale
RM. Lennon
CM. Boateng
CM. Galy
LM. Taarabt
ST. dos Santos
ST. Pavlyuchenko

Some of these guys have a lot to proove. To demonstrate to Harry that they deserve a place in the squad and that they should be genuine considerations for the first eleven.

Would be unfair if the likes of Gio, Kev and Adel etc. were shipped out before being given their chance on the big stage.

The downside, however, is that its a bit risky given that this is our most realistic chance of European football next year.

I would start with pav and frazier up front, when ever them two have been paired together they have scored goals. When frazier come on against wigan our attack looked much better, he ran the channels which created space for pav who didn't look isolated like he has a number of times this season, it was exactly the same when we played liverpool earlier in the competition.

Apparently Gio has been back in full training since just after Xmas. The only reason that he hasn't yet made the squad is down to lack of match fitness.

He's got to go with Lennon on the right. I think Bentley is a crackin player, but he's out of form.

My startin XI is just a pipedream. Still think Taarabt should get his chance at 90mins tho. When Ronaldo started off in the Prem, he was just like Taarabt. What help him was perseverance from SAF, which I think is what Adel needs. If he knows that he will get a run of games he wont feel that he's got to bring out every trick in his locker within the 10 or 15 minute cameos that he's been given in the past.

O'Hara should be given a start. however. Not many have put the effort in that he has this year.

'Who the fuck are Burnley'??
Burnley are a decent old-school footy club who deserve a bit more respect than that (this season alone, after knocking out Ar5ena1, Chelsea and Fulham in the Carling Cup.)
The same Chelsea who have managed just the one league championsip more than Burnley, and that includes the two Premiership titles under Jose.
Have a heart, or is that the wine talking because what with backing Woodgate to score...?

I for one will buy you a crate of the finest if he does manage to. I say finest. It may be Jacobs Creeek, it may be Blue Nun, but who are we kidding, he won't score.

Predict a tight 1-0 victory tues eve. News of Appiah is fantastic, although is it just me or have Zokora's picked up since 'arry took charge? Less excited about Downing and feel he will have to be really fantastic to win the WHL crowd around who won't hesitate to 'tut' or 'groan' at every failed cross (of which there will be a few Bentley-esque).

Absolute madness this Defoe business. As I recall, most of us were sick of him by them time he left us, what with the countless offside calls and generally insipid performances he consistently put in. If Jermaine Jenas were a striker, he'd be Jermain Defoe: occasionally brilliant, but too often invisible and ultimately overrated.

We seem to be obsessed with players with inflated egos and not much product to back it up: Downing, Defoe, Bellamy, Chimbonda? Spare us the pain, Mr. Levy.

Tonight I'm praying for Podolski and Pedersen. Appiah's a step in the right direction.

that maybe so but we surely needed an extra striker up front to help out and he knows the english game....and defoe's tottenham record is....

Fair enough. We are in a relegation battle after all, as Woody so often reminds us, so I guess Defoe would provide more immediate results then Podolski (but not for cheaper, it would seem) what with his familiarity of the premier league, as you say.

I'm sure there's some psychological term explaining the nostalgia we feel towards the alleged good old days when Defoe was banging in goals for us and Martin Jol "had no hair but we [didn't] care."
Personally I don't remember the levity of those days. We were always bitching about something. But then everything's relative, I suppose.

If my memory (not my strong point) serves me right Appiah blew his knee out. The Turks decided that was that and stopped paying him, he's been fit since the start of the season and the wrangle was to get himself released which I presume he's now done.

yes & no.

He's an average player (I liked the JJ comparisons above) I dislike the fact he doesn't work hard and tends to just wait around until things break for him at which point he's then very greedy.

Not the worse player we've had upfront, but a long way from the best.

Don't think he's worth more than £10m but I'm hoping that what's been put about Pompey still owing us for three players it will be more a case of ripping up IOU's than actually paying out cash. As such we should still have a few quid left to waste on overated England players in other positions (LW).

Arry obviously likes him and he may well form a decent partnership with Pav, who knows. I'd rather have had Bellamy as he'd work his socks off even if he was playing sh1t.

That rule is to stop clubs farming out players. The fact that we look like paying more for him than we sold him for shows this is not the case (or we're thicker than we thought!) As I understand it the rule, is it L19?, is esentially in place to safeguard players simply moving around to facilitate financial shennanigans (sp?).

The FA take upon themselves to have a shufty at proceedings and then they sanction the transfer or not, as they see fit.

An awful lot of good folk took it upon themselves to become established experts on this minor minor minor point of FA red tape of late and were brandishing half cocked elements of it about as if it were in tablet form and being lugged by a bloke called Moses.

My view, after the Keane & Berbatov fiascos is that you are essentially right and if you have enough money and the neccessary minerals you can basically do what you want these days.

Signed a contract? Don't worry, it's football, just tell'em you've got a cold and and you don't like playing in blue anymore.

Broken the governing body's law? Don't worry, it;s football. Toss the injured party a few 100,000 towards their charity fund.

what is the score with defoe playing in the UEFA, Carling and FA cups?

The FA cup should be ok as he was 'sick' on Saturday.
Somehow Pompey did not play him in any of their 3 games in the Carling Cup, so that should be ok too.
The UEFA is a bit different, he has appeared for Pompey in Europe this season. There is something about playing after January (as for Pav?)but as Defoe played this seasons, he must of shit out there?

Even better news for us is that Stephen Appiah is at the club. A top quality CDM who can score goals, if we can keep him fit then we've got a fantastic player on our hands.

The prospect of Stephen Appiah and Luka Modric on top form in the centre of midfield is getting me all warm and fuzzy!

There is a rule to stop the point I made, there is however the ability to get approval. Due to the fact we are not trying to get round things the approval should be a formality. As a lawyer I'm sure Mr Levy has sorted this. You need approval by the FA to sign any player anyway so I'm not concerned.

Burnley have only lost 5 times away from home this season. They'll be tough tackling and BANG up for it. Watching them against Les Petit Arse they passed the ball nicely, although their keeper led a blessed life. Test him early and he may lose confidence. I predict a 2-0 to the Yids but it will be neither easy nor pretty. Just someone tell them tnot to hoof the ball long! We play our best football on the floor and through the middle. I dont understand why they just hoof it!

The signing will be done and dusted before we know it. The FA owe spurs a break after failing to act against ManUre and Pool when they snatched Berba and Keane from us in the summmer.

No-one in my knowledge has tested this rule before so I'm pretty sure that Spurs will get this one sorted, maybe not in time to play tonight but I'm sure he'll be ready for Sunday.

What I want to know is.... Will Appiah be fit and ready for Sunday too?

I don't expect Harry will faff around with many (any?) youth or reserves in the starting eleven. This is our most realistic avenue to return to Europe next season. As that's an important marketing item when making the pitch to transfer targets in the summer, we ought not to be getting cute with the team selection tonight. We're a lot better than Burnley, but let's not give them any more of a sniff than they deserve by running out second stringers.

Good news on Defoe. He may not be a walking panacea, but at least he gives Harry some options in attack. Should be a solid partner for Pav and Bent both, and I have a hunch that playing two up front more often than not will magically "improve" Bentley's delivery.

All players have injuries over the course of their careers and Appiah has had a knee injury. Doesn't mean he can't do a great job for us. There was a story (on Sky Sports, IIRC) the other day claiming that Pekhart being left out at Soton was due to some screwy policy they instituted as their finances began to go tits up this season. Basically they stopped playing loanees, period.

Ah, here's the link. From yesterday, as it happens. It's not exactly clear what the hell's going on down at Soton, but it might not be merit-based team selection. I wouldn't write Pekhart off just yet.

I should imagine from now on it will be Defoe + 1 out of Pav and Bent. Pav's performance on Friday and Bents injury should see that system given a run out on Sunday.

Hudd & O'Hara are both young and I'm sure Harry will hope they learn from Appiah. After watching a few more videos and compilations of Appiah I think he looks very dynamic and could help us play verying systems. He may even be able to play alongside or in front of Hudd. Jenas, as I've stated before, we miss when he doesn't play. However, his recent form has been poor and he needs to work harder and bring more to the team or I'll see him behind Appiah.

even Soton fans wouldnt give him the time of day.

Agree about Pekhart. If he was any good then someone in the prem would of had him on loan. Instead he can't get a game for a tin pot championship side.

There was a story (on Sky Sports, IIRC) the other day claiming that Pekhart being left out at Soton was due to some screwy policy they instituted as their finances began to go tits up this season. Basically they stopped playing loanees, period.

Ah, here's the link. From yesterday,...

Defoe transfer just officially confirmed on SSN.. to be presented in front of...

with defoe...makes 3 senior strikers....
tommy and ohara are 21/22...so both young'uns....appiah at 28yr should help them if he signs...
zokora is very useful....jenas is going to have to battle....but the squad is not bad....harry will no doubt add a couple more.....someone might be on their way....?

well surely if Appiah is as good as we think he might be.. and if he is the DM we've been calling out for..

and bearing in mind that Modric is our best player and proved last Friday that he CAN play in an orthodox 4-4-2 formation..

then SURELY this is our starting central midfield pair..

i hear what you're saying about Jenas.. and sometimes even i get a feeling that we're missing him when he's not playing.. but then when he comes back in i feel like "what exactly was it we were missing??"

There was a report on SSN that Mendes is rumoured already to want out of Rangers. Would any sell-on clause have given Spurs leverage in the Defoe deal, in addition to any monies owed from the original sale?

Saw Spurs beat Burnley 7-0 at the Lane with my Dad, 7th September 1968. I understand from DV that he was there, too. Greaves got a hat-trick (one from a penalty). Jennings saved a penalty. Happy day.

Friend of mine comes from Burnley, but has lived in London for some years. Not so long ago, he returned to see some folks. In a pub, he was followed into the toilet by a guy who said with menace, "You're not from around here, are you?".

Well, his accent had changed a little, living in London. But he was from around there originally. Unless moving on is a crime.

Burnley itself is situated near Pendle Hill, historically (and currently) associated with witchcraft. One of those found guilty at the Pendle Witch Trials was a woman called Alice Nutter. The surname has fallen into our language to signify a crazy person. There are quite a few Nutters in Lancashire.

I truly hope that, after his trial, Appiah is found guilty of being good. I believe in monsters in midfield.

I know he's not old, but most strikers who make it at the top level have broken into the first team by the time they're 20. He wasn't good enough for Soton who are in a relegation battle in the championship. As such he's highly unlikely to ever be good enough.
People like FC & JD dropped down on loan when they were kids and set the lower leagues alight and they are decent strikers, not star strikers but decent. As such Peckhart may come good, one day, at championship level I would think.. Either way he's not going to get a sniff for us in the near future.

Appiah is not free. He is arguably not even out of contract.

Appiah himself declared his contract with the turks null and void.

If Spurs do offer him a contract I fully expect the Turks to come knocking for their cut.

it will end in court. mark my words....

If my memory (not my strong point) serves me right Appiah blew his knee out. The Turks decided that was that and stopped paying him, he's been fit since the start of the season and the wrangle was to get himself released which I presume he's now done.

ps in response to your hairist...

Ginge, happy with Defoe coming back? ;)

yes & no.

He's an average player (I liked the JJ comparisons above) I dislike the fact he doesn't work hard and tends to just wait around until things break for him at which point he's then very greedy.

Not the worse player we've had upfront, but a long way from the...

Good signing, although doesn't really blow my skirt up. I guess we have to ask is he an improvemnet on Bent...yes!
Let's just hope Boro don't cave in too!

Bent off? I hope not. When given proper service, he's shown he can score in bunches. That, and he's always been positive and had a good attitude. When he wasn't playing much. When he was getting stick off his own fans. I give him credit for keeping his head up.

Bottom line though is that selling him would put us right back in the same striker shortage we reacquired Defoe to help fix. Worse in some ways, actually, as Spurs sans Bent would be running out Campbell to lead the line on his own in the UEFA Cup.

Yes, that's a fair assessment.

For the same reason I wouldn't sell Zokora. He gets stick a-plenty, but he's a versatile utility player, able to occupy a space across the back when required. And 'arry has already stated that we're short of numbers, so selling either player now would be counter-productive to any advances in the window. I'm just mindful of there probably being fire where there's (a smidgin) of smoke.

But, more tellingly, perhaps, I've noticed Jamie O'Hara using Darren's copyrighted 'Yeah, definitely' affirmation on several occasions, which may suggest some kind of formal handover has taken place. 8O

To sell Bent or Zokora would just be a step back in terms of squad depth and cover, which is exactly the holes we are plugging no?

I'm also a big fan of Babel, he's big, strong, fast has a good touch and can play wide or upfront. I do think they'd want silly money for him (especially off us) as we pulled their pants down with the Keane fee. I'd also like to see us test the water with Hunt although a limited player he gets stuck in and would give us some bite (although Reading are trying to come straight back up which has got to be worth over £20m to them so they'd probably want silly money)

Aiden McGeady anyone?

he's another I like the look of (although Maloney was meant to be the muts nuts before him and he couldn't cut it at Villa) his fall out with Strachan could mean he could be a cheaper alternative.

So the list is ;
Downing
McGeady
Babel
Hunt
...

Anderton is a free agent he used to play for us,so he must be in the running?
Crouch, he's at a selling club and ...........he used to play for us.

No, it must be Kanoute, used to play for us and Harry - it's all making sense.

French media suggest we're back in for Fred, Finnan on loan could be back on also.

I personally think Downing would do a great job for us. Nobody can doubt the guys ability to cross left flank. And Bentley (who I personally think has played harder than most recently), used to have Santa Cruz and McCarthy (Benni not Mick) in the box. His crossing from the right flank is marvellous, we just need to get some players in the box for a header.

Could be a nice balance with Appiah and Modders in the centre.

Hang on, haven't we just spent 6 million pounds loaning Defoe to portsmouth?

It's official - Levy is a financial genius.

Yeah, but now we have a proven goal scorer that loves Arry/Spurs and North east London and also has a now has a real point to prove...

He may not be world class, but then we aint exactly flying at the top of the prem either are we!! :(

I'm really optimistic about the Appiah situation because IF we can secure his services and knees permitting, we really have a solid addition to our midfield. :D

I also like the fact that it will free up Zokora as a replacement DCM and I personally thought he really raised his game when asked to cover as a right back.

Balance and strength in depth is the key to our future.....

2-1 tonight.

Now, who we gonna sell... =D

I'd love it if Ghaly scored right in front of our fans.

Anyone who boos him on Tuesday deserves to be strung up by their testicles and beaten with a salmon.

I was dismayed and appalled to see him booed on friday frankly; as were most of us it seems.

How...

i'm with you on that.. and he did apologise at the time too.. its on bbc website in archives if anyone wants to check...

Who wouldn't be pissed off with themselves and the coach if they came on as a sub and got subbed?

Not really... we had a sell on clause of 4 million if sold on within four years... anyone could have bought him and we would have got that...

So fifteen becomes 11... so we paid a slightly less galling 2 million to keep him fit for us for a year.

Latest from the Thurrock Gazette......
Lionel Messi says "I followed de Spurs as a boy, and Harry thinks I can run around a bit"
There you go Messi on the left wing.
I'd still prefer Downing myself being a Sun reporter. I spent all night thinking up "Spurs Drowning with Downing" or "will Spurs go down with Downing?"

I'm looking forward to those occasional cracking goals from Defoe, but I know for every one of those there are 2 or 3 blasts from 10 feet out of an open goal into the stands and several hundred needless offsides runs that are going to leave me ripping my hair out.

JGM - If we leave Modric in the middle, and if Appiah is a fraction of the player who starred at Parma (and would be a massive upgrade from Zokora), I don't see how 'arry is going to be able to keep JJ and Thudd happy as bit players.

It's the market price of British players. Does seem a bit steep. Given the chance, I'm sure both of them would have chosen a smaller financial yoke to bear.

Maybe JOH himself will be worth a ton in the near future. He does bring fire to the team and a 'shoot first, ask questions later' attitude; whereas Bentley is more cerebral. Both qualities are valuable. I'm sure Bentley will be fine in 'arry's new team.

A game of two halves, a team of two extremely opposing qualities. Pain & relief in equal measure. It was like watching Marathon man: Yid gets tortured but comes up trumps.

A first half like that in the final and it's game over.

Harry was as honest as ever in post match interview and appeared dismayed and concerned about the performance as well he might. The final score didn't fool him, nor me, we've a lot to do to even challenge during the final, assuming we get there.

I like O'Hara more and more and Corluka is just so classy on the ball at times. He's never hurried or flustered no matter the situation and makes room for himself with ease. I'm looking forward to seeing where 'Arry plays him when Hutton's back.

Now, where have wigan got to? They need sorting out again.

I was thinking about Pompey's financial situation - supposedly not good - and couldn't help reflecting that, before he left, 'arry would have been perfectly aware of the club's debts and commitments. He would have known about its ability to move in the player market and its (and, therefore, his) constraints.

So, although I'm grateful for what he's done at Spurs so far, I wonder if he'd already reached his sell-by-date at Pompey. The natural spin set forth is the ambition to manage a big club. But the reality may be (if only in part) the desire to simply manege a club which is solvent - a club with muscle and mobility in the transfer market and, consequently, a palette of players with which to paint winning football.

Perhaps several causal strands all came together at once, and these are but two. Or perhaps 'arry exclusively to fulfill his ambition. I just found myself rationalising what I would do in similar circumstances and, having a low opinion of myself, became curious about 'arry's motives.

Whatever the facts, I'm pleased he's here. Good result after a limp start.

I think if you play Lennon right and Modric in the middle JOH has to play left with a DM for two reasons. 1. he's left footed 2. he adds a bit of bite to our engine room giving us balance.
We really need a result against wigan, hope we don't play like we did first half!

That's a good point Redhead. O'Hara does add more bite to the midfield and puts less pressure on Baler. Isn't it strange how JOH can be so poor against Wigan and outstanding tonight ?

Glad to see some appreciation for Daws, I think he's been much maligned on this site. His wobbles began when Robbo went AWOL and what with the battle of Ledders' knee and stuff he was suddenly the main man surrounded by numpties.

Over the last few games the old Daws has re-emerged and it was wonderful that he got the opener.

You're wrong there, he's a decent player, he tackles, he's aggressive and a proper little fighter. He also can shoot and make a decent pass and his dead balls aren't too shabby.

He reminds me of Steve Perryman and Graham Roberts. They were average players who made the most of limited abilities and became great players for this club. That's what JOH needs to do to really make it.
