Who's This Capel Chap, Then?

Fresh Transfer Speculation Caught Daily...

Well the quotes from the player are interesting enough, I'll say that much. But, and it's a but as big as big as Dawn French's, doesn't he play for Seville? Two words. Breach & Contract. And I'm not talking about a Holborn pub, here.

He's technically gifted, pacey and...hang on, hang on... it was only a couple of weeks ago that a reported bid of £12.5 million was rejected. Twelve and a half to make you laugh. Frankly, as does this whole story. Not as if we're suddenly stuck for someone on the left anymore. Could this possibly be a 'What will Spurs spend their Berba money on story...?'

And Capel has come a courting on these shores before. Last September there was a speculative piece in the Mirror prior to a Seville/Ar5ena1 game. Diego saying  "It's great praise to have big clubs in Europe interested in me." in relation to Wenger being after him.

It's notable that in this lateset set of quotes though, the player deliberately distances himself from Ramos. "...didn't speak to me, he did with my agent I presume, yes. My representatives deal with this." MMmmn. This has all the hallmarks of hot air designed to bump up salary at Seville. But what do I know? Expect him on the Official Site holding up the shirt by teatime today, then.

                                                                           ******

What other pearl can I share?  Oh yeah, Gus has come straight out and smashed the suggestion he'd do to us what he did to Leeds. In fact, got right underneath it and put it over the boundary and into the overflow carpark for an easy six. Perhaps every reader of this blog ought to send Pointy Shouty Bloke a packet of Fisherman's Friends?

Nice but cant see it happening unless the scurrilous rumour bout Keano is true and we are gonna sign Bentley as well???(rather av capel if I had the choice, more balance)

What a midfield with no bloody strikers!

This is certainly one we could do with, much more than Bentley. I wish that we'd spend the 14m or so which seems to be the asking price rather than the reported 17m for Bentley, since we already have a decent enough RW in Lennon, who does deserve some more time. OK, there's no defending Lennon's crossing ability (or inability) but we also have to bear in mind that he was more or less Spurs' only creative outlet from midfield (Jenas is crap, Malbranque is very decent but not top on creativity) and some teams did tend to gang up on Lennon. I sincerely think that Capel should be very near the top of our wishlist.

Capel is as good as Lennon at his best; no more with one exception; he is a natural left sided player. I have watched the player on weekly basis last season and the season before as where I live five La Liga games, at least, are televised live on Saturdays and Sundays. In fact his team mate, Navas, on the right wing is a better and more effective player though older in age. Capel whose name is pronounced as if there is an 'h' after the 'c'is less frequently utilised on the left wing as Navas and the departing left back Daniel Alves were more utilised on the right side of the park during games. Overrated.

Point taken on the lolly. Unfortunately this reflects the madness of the PL pricing. Eg. anybody who thinks Downing is worth £10 million needs their head looking at.

Agree on Downing - I used to breathe a sigh of relief at the end of every bloody transfer window for the last few years that we haven't got him. I'd much prefer that we stick with Steed (great little player even if not good enough for LW for a top 4 team) than blow 10m on Downing. In fact, I'd rather we play Steed in the centre, buy a LW and dump Jenas, who would fetch decent money for better players.
Also, all this silence on DM targets for us: I wonder whether Ramos will play Modric in the Carrick role in DM, it might work out well if he pairs him up with someone better than Jenas.

The silly season continues, Spurs have sold 16 players !!, yeah rite !!, seems all that has left are some 3rd rate, never would have made its, signed a couple, but what about the ones due to come, due to go etc.. rumours, wouldnt it be nice to see these guaranteed signings happen, Bentley has been signing, passed his fitness, wants to live in london, we need a left winger etc etc, seems we have needed him for 3-4 years.. so where is he, where is so on and so on.. all these strikers. another goalie, hasn't anyone got some real genuine news.. can't really wait 'till it's official on the spurs website'.

William, I'm not sure what your point is in replying to me but I think that Spurs would indeed benefit from a major clear-out, with the following:
1. Robinson
2. Chimbonda
3. Lee
4. Assou-Ekotto
5. Dawson
6. Gardner
7. Rocha
8. Stalteri
9. Tainio
10. Ghaly
11. Jenas
12. Boateng

Some of these will of course need replacing but the above do not seem to be up to scratch for a team aspiring to a top 4 finish. Zokora is additionally debatable but I'd keep him for his versatility since he has covered decently both at CD and RB. Huddlestone can also cover at CD, although we should buy one specialist CD if we sell both Dawson and Rocha. At LB, Bale is covered by Gilberto, O'Hara and Gunter and at RB, Hutton is covered by Gunter and Zokora.

I'd also get rid of Bent if we can replace him by someone like Milito or Fred. I'd also sell Keane if we get 18-20m and we can replace him by someone like Huntelaar.

So, when you ironise that Spurs have sold 16 players, some of us wish that that were nearly the case!

I actually think we'll go back with a bigger bid for Capel; its unusual for Clubs to give up at the first time of trying (the signings of Bale and Hutton both spring to mind, as does this unfortunately Liverpudlian pursuit of Keane, too) and though we were roundly rebuffed before I thought that was due to our apparent inclusion of Sevilla waiving rights to any pending lawsuits regarding Ramos's "transfer" to Spurs last year. Having said all that, I do remember a Ramos quote some time ago saying he wouldn't go back for any under contract players at Sevilla. hmmm.

TMG, here's my thoughts on your list.

1. Robinson - Yes, get rid, needs a change of scenery.
2. Chimbonda - Yep, get rid, Hutton is better
3. Lee - Never getting back in the side. Domo Arigato and goodbye.
4. Assou-Ekotto - Keep him, one for the future *TM
5. Dawson - Again i'd like to keep him as backup on the strength of the season before lasts performances.
6. Gardner - Bye bye bambi
7. Rocha - Adios amigo
8. Stalteri - Chip off canuck
9. Tainio - Keep as a squad player to cover injuries
10. Ghaly - Hahaha, gone!
11. Jenas - Keep, he is the marmite of football players and if he had the consistency he'd be great, why not see if he can produce that this season after proper preparation rather than some pies and mash.
12. Boateng - As much as I dont think he'll get in the first team, he could be kept as a reserve team player with the chance of moving up if his performances improve (a lot)

JuandeOn2DaysOff: Ramos did say that immediately on arrival and it does seem that we did not try for any Sevilla players in his first transfer window in January 2008 but I don't think that he meant that we would NEVER try any Sevilla players. I also think that it'd be good to pay a little bit extra for Capel and resolve the other issues with Sevilla, who knows we might need other players from them in the future!

We know Spurs interested in Capel. We also know Seville are, unsurprisingly, reluctant to sell to Spurs; It's likely that they will only do so if they are seen to make Spurs pay and attone financially for poaching their manager.

In short, the player's agent has no doubt realised that he has an excellent opportunity to obtain a better deal for him and the player no matter what transpires: essential to keep them both on the boil in the interim.

I don't know. It sounds rather strange to me, but I assure you the source believes it to be the case and I am simply passing on the information. Would be rather pleased were it to turn out to be true. Time will tell... Up the Spurs.

If Steed goes, my only consolation would be that he could direct his considerable energy towards solving the Middle East crisis. (I seem to remember Tony Flair was a fan, and could probably find him a position - if not on an extreme wing, somewhere near the centre).

That said, I don't think Israel are that likely to buy him. (Or to meet the stonking big asking price we should slap on our very best Belgian-born Frenchman).

Oh bugger. As much as I hate to read these words from you I feel like saying "I said it would happen". On the train home I saw something about Ramos admitting he might not be able to keep hold of Dimi and Robbie, i.e. They both could go. It was in every Spurs fan's favourite newspaper, the Evening Standard. I was reading it over someone's shoulder... I wouldn't buy that shit. Mind you I wouldn't know if you still have to either, what with London Lite's, Thisislondon's and Metro's being thrust in your face everywhere these days?
Capel. Nice. And not cheap. I read jamiespurs in the forum regarding him with interest - "Ramos was the man who made him the player he is today. He promoted him from the sevilla youth team and the man who gave him his first professional start, which in turn enabled him to get his first Spain U21 call up and on the fringes of the Spain squad". I would just like to suggest the Ramos factor must be really powerful. He did this whilst he was managing Malaga? Quite impressive. And I've wet my knickers again.

Capel;
Young, talented, left footed, left winger, Ramos knows him well and obviously rates him highly. What's not to like?

Will Sevilla sell? We'll probably pay way over the odds due to last year's Ramos raid, but with a big enough bid (£14-18), I think yes.
He's very young and when you look at the sort of money players are going for here, could prove a real bargain.

Keane;
I've made my feelings known in previous posts, but when the chips are down, up front, there is no one better to have fighting for the cause, but I'm sick and tired of hurling abuse at the team to "GET STUCK IN". When was the last time any of us watched a game and felt we were in control for the whole game, even when winning?

I want to see a Spurs team walk out on to that pitch and completely destroy sides from the first whistle until the last. If that means losing Keane + Berbatov for the grater good and for Ramos' revolution, then BIOYC!

Capel or no Capel, I'm sure Levy and the boys have a fiendish plan which may even include dumping Berbs & Keano for around 45 mil, if that can be classed as dumping. It's not glamour players that make prizes, it's points, so as long as whomever we get in lieu of those we flog, do the biz, we're sorted.

I'm sure I had an E last weekend which looked like this =D

Steed has been sturdy steed. And I would be sorry to see him go. But if somethings got to give, it would be in midfield, its getting pretty crowded (except for the illusive DM).

It's all very well saying let's take 45 mill for a strike force that has scored nearly 100 goals in the last two seasons but how easy is it to replace them for less ?

If we have Capel, Modric, Dos Santos and bently in midfield, plus one new out and out striker, very easy.

What about the larger squad ? Surely Steed is far too useful to let go ?

There's goss a plenty tonight. Keane is allegedly doing nothing but worry over his transfer to The Pool. That's the word from Spain.... :(

And completely unsubstantiated rumours that part of the cull is .... Steeeeed. Which is bloody wrong.

Unless of course JR wishes...

Oh bugger. As much as I hate to read these words from you I feel like saying "I said it would happen". On the train home I saw something about Ramos admitting he might not be able to keep hold of Dimi and Robbie, i.e. They both could go. It was in every Spurs fan's favourite newspaper, the Evening...

You are talking absolute shite mate.

Capel did not make his debut for sevilla until 2005/2006 season. Incidentally the same season Ramos began to manage sevilla.

Before you start slagging folk off you would be better advised to check out the facts first.

I know my facts. If I told you I lived in Spain when he made his debut would that make any difference to your opinion? And you take a US "soccer" net site to base your opinion? I prefer to reference this...

Let's face it, he didn't play very many games under Ramos at all. He did not make his debut under Ramos, and therefore it all points to Ramos not being the person who made him the player he is today. Capel is just another player who rose through the ranks of a different club, incidentally earning a handful of starts (but not his first starts) when Ramos became Seville's manager. So who knows their facts jamie?

OK jamie. I know you want the last word. My point was, Ramos did not give the player his first start, in fact he played in 3 games in 2004/05. He did make his debut when he was 16. When Ramos was at Malaga. Ramos gave him 5 appearances in 2005/06. He never played in 2006/07 under Ramos. By my reckoning he would have gotten 5 games under Ramos before Ramos joined us. I am not denying he perhaps would like to join up with his former manager again. Maybe Capel liked what he saw. Plus, he's Spanish, so moving to Spurs or Liverpool would be easier than Manure, for example. But to give Ramos credit for making him the player he is today as you did previously is ridiculous. It is a disservice to the people who run the structures below the first team (in any team) that Capel spent the majority of his time, whilst he was learning his trade. Such as Seville's academy/reserve(B teams), where Capel would have spent a lot of his time. But I know you are defensively minded at this point, because I took issue with your innacurate comments.

Anyone can use facts to prove a point. True. At least they adr facts. Anyone can make it up as they go along with blind enthusiam and little care for facts. Which makes you the equivalent of a Daily Mail hack announcing the latest big signing. You could just admit you were wrong?

If these blogs/forums were places that stimulate discussion there should be no need to get overly offended if someone says anything that is in disagreement. If I told you "Berbatov scored the winner in The Carling Cup" and you told me "No, he didn't, Woodgate did" I would not enter into a defence proposing that "Berbatov scored the winner because without that goal Chelsea would have won, because that was the goal that gave us the belief we could win, and that turning point was the one that won us the Cup etc."

I would say "Actually, you're right. My bad."
