WIN A CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL PACKAGE

Monday, 11 August 08, 03:23 AM · Comments (131)

Where everybody knows your... team is pants

Fantasy Football anyone?

The gloriously oversized behemoth of footy sites Ole Ole has the lot. Over €20,000's worth of glittering prizes.

First prize? A pair of Champions League Final Tickets with tip top accomodation thrown in. Rome baby, Rome.

There are prizes all the way down to tenth spot, tickets for top European matches, Playstations, games, Replica Shirts. Even the threat of some ropey Official Ole Ole merchandise.

There are too many fantasy games out there and let's have it right, we've had a dabble at most of them. Here are my findings. Number one - There isn't a game out there worth paying for.

Number Two - Mini leagues are the way forward.  There is zero interest or reward knowing that you're 213,886th in an anonymous list. What we want is bragging rights.

There are five League tournaments you can enter across the global leagues. La Liga your bag? Then why 'go through the motions' just picking a Premiership squad? Good God, you could even 'go French'. There's a Budesliga League, Ligue 1 ans Serie A. You can play in seven languages.

But, if you want to really show off, Ole Ole have the Daddy. The European Super League. Yeah, your pick of all the players in all the leagues in Europe.

Harry's Pert Sweaty Fantasy League overall winner gets Tottenham Replica Shirt of their choice.

Here's the link.  http://www.oleole.com/fantasyfootball.

Harry's Pert Sweaty Fantasy and the entry code is 'oleole'. Signing up is not only free and easy, but do remember, you must pick a squad from the same league you're joining, mine is a Premiership Mini League!

Goodluck armchair generals, Rome salutes you!

Early bird sign-up* - pick your team by August 14, 2008 and get entered into a drawing to win 2 league match tickets for the teams of your choice!

 (*not to exceed €500)

I had this incredible team picked and then went to submit and no-go. You must have fill all 4 sub slots before you can set your team.

At first I was really upset, but then thinking about it, they have it setup so you can only pick 2 or 3 stars. Now all I have to do is choose between Gerrard & Bentley as my captain.

Calm yourself my friend! We are two weeks and two games into a 38 game season. Thats not to mention the UEFA cup, FA cup & League cup. There is plenty of opportunity for trophies and wins before the season ends in May.

We have a strong squad. Ok, its light in some areas but look at the players we have at the club. Players like Hutton & Bale are the best their nations have to offer whilst players like Gunter are eagerly waiting in the wings. King & Woodgate are 2 of the most talented CB's that England have possessed in decade, we just have to allow them to form a partnership (injuries permitting of course!). In midfield we have the Croat schemer Modric who once he's adapted to the PL will run games from the middle of the park. Alongside him we have David Bentley, a boy from the wrong side of North London who couldnt deny himself the glory of Tottenham Hotspur, he wanted it so much he "Tried his nuts off" to get the move. Three words - Giovani Dos Santos, signed for a mere £4.7m the 18yo wonderkid, graced with speed, skill, trickery and one of the worlds greatest talents. And despite his strange start to the season we have Juande Ramos; a shrewd, stoic, spaniard who given time will mould this bunch of players into a cohesive unit. We just have to be patient and wait for all theses players to gel and then we'll be onto something good.

The ramos revolution has not stopped it has merely faltered, we need to keep the faith and I'm sure we'll be rewarded

Heres a quote from a man who knows about revolution:

"Revolution is not a bed of roses, it is a struggle to the death between the future and the past" - Fidel Castro

Lets hope that keeps Magoolio from topping himself!! ;)

On a serious note though.... Boriello had one good season in Serie A, much like Rolando Bianchi had one good season. Shevchenko couldnt cut it in the premier league and he went to Cheavski as one of the best strikers in the world. I dont think Boriello is the amswer. I'd definitely go for his missus though!!

Did anyone else think England not being at EURO2008 was great?? Not only did we not have to put up with all the false hope and see Steve Maclaren blag his way through a tournament. We also didn't have to put up with the chavvy wag's and wannabe slags that follow the england team everywhere.

Aside from Cheryl Cole the rest of them are pedestrian at best. Not in the same league as the eurowags.

As the days go by I'm inclining to feel more and more sympathy for Ramos, as the man stuck in the middle of a dirty bunfight, and awaiting the protracted outcome of targeted transfers.

Although I accept that uncertainty is in the nature of things, and that football is no exception (particularly nowadays, when players decide on a whim to 'follow their dream', and motives are rooted in monetary gain), I can't help but feel that this is no way to treat the coach you seduced to your club.

Sure, Ramos will be a rich man, whatever happens, now or in the months and years to come. But, as a professional, his desire is to get the job done, and to get it done well. The reputation Spurs have for being hard-nosed negotiators is commendable, but when does hard-nosed become stubborn, fixed, inflexible?

Meantime, a team-spirit - so buoyant in pre-season - is withering in the media glare pointed at Berbatov. But that's only part of it - because there must have been other potential recruits, whose signature was in no way contingent upon the rat leaving. Where are they? Where is Veloso? Where are the men when we need them?

Talk of the team-spirit withering is one thing. But there is also the spirit of the fans, and that can wither, too. When the fans get behind the team, or players, the positive energy is phenomenal. Encouragement breeds confidence and a belief of 'I can'. The forward momentum of only two weeks ago has not only stopped, but sufferd whiplash.

Of course, the board can't be held responsible for the extravagent expectations of fans. But they need to be aware that there are consequences to all things, and that optimism needs nourishing - in the players and in us.

As put on previous posts can't understand why we've not gone in for some of the players recently signed by other clubs, especially when they fill such blamant voids within our squad (Kompany, Cisse) and at decent prices.
We had better sign somemore players by the end of the week. I get up every morning and spend most of my day refreshing all the usual websites (newsnow etc) in the vain hope of seeing our new signing, we don't appear to be linked to anyone very strongly either!

My support of spurs will never ever wither. Unfortunately, my love for the club dwells deep inside me, its an emotion I cant turn off no matter how hard I try. I feel the joy of every victory and the agony of every defeat. You see being a Spurs fan isn't some badge you wear like Chelsea and Arsenal fans do, walking around in pseudo-fan mode pretending to love the club when you know little about it. Being a Spurs fan is something you are, its a lifestyle choice, some of us are lucky to be born Spurs fans but others are even luckier to become Spurs fans. We are part of something, part of history. Its upto us Spurs fans to ensure that the club never dies, players come and go as do managers, coaches & chairman but being a fan is in your blood, like an eternal flame that burns inside us all. Don't lose heart my friends, for even in times of trouble, we are the lucky ones.

Hi guys my first post on here (don't all run away yet)

i'm getting a horrible feeling of deja vu, the season again starting badly, and now im thinking that our preseason games were against teams much like those we will face in the UEFA. As such I'm eagerly awaiting our first European fixture, it certainly pulled me through the last dark winter!

I've read a million posts on here deriding the board, the team and even each other(!) but over-analysis will just give us a headache. In both games that we've had there have been a number of opportunities for the game to go either way. Now that isn't a glowing endorsement of our shakey first XI, but when u look across the park at a team struggling at home to WBA and then losing to a team far worse than our opponents, suddenly the sun starts shining again. Man U have struggled too, in fact even Liverpool looked strained against Sunderland and only pulled through againt Middlesborough.

Its obvious to the whole world that we need another striker, and I will remain confident that something happens before the close of the window. Surely our board can't fuck that up??

p.s. is my sunny optimism gonna piss off everyone?

It's true that we'll remain fans but, this year, we all felt we had a golden opportunity to begin the campaign well. We even looked as if we would. The players looked fit, hungry and happy. The looked like greyhounds straining at the leash.

But it's hard not be be suspicious that business has come before the good of the club. It's all about making profits, or at least making financial ends meet. Isn't it? I'd like someone to demonstrate otherwise.

With such a talented array of individuals it's hard to believe that we will struggle to achieve lift-off velocity from the bottom of the table. Yet struggle we may, if Magic can't wave his wand and pull some rabbits out of his hat. Or, rather, the board can't do that on his behalf.

Opinions vary over the Chairman. Some say he's just a hard-as-nails acquisitive businessman, with a head for realising the maximum values of his assets. Others say he's a genuine fan of Spurs and adores the club. Others say he's both.

All of those ways can spell trouble. The acquisitive businessman will always put money first. There's no mystery there. But the man who loves his club? You wouldn't imagine that to be a problem, really. Unless, of course, a man's heart ruled his head, and he got carried away making emotional and irrational decisions. But I can't see our Chairman falling regular prey to that behaviour. So how else could loving your possession be destructive? Because you can hug something so close you can't see its face.

And perhaps the Chairman can no longer see the face of Spurs, because he holds it too jealously. And, if he can't see its face, he can't see its nature.

Levy cant win either way can he then?

If he sells to Manure for anything less than 30mill some spurs fans will say he buckled; if he puts the judas in the ressies he will get pelters for not realising a valuable asset.

From my side (and i would challenge anyone honestly to admit differently) i'd rather he rot in the ressies at least till xmas and we borrow against TV rights (like Citeh) and replace the f*cker forthwith.

we cant sell him to our long term rivals unless they pay through the nose 937. Remember (as stated earlier) we are on a stable financial footing which is more than can be said of two of the top 4, maybe even 3 if roman loses interest

toddspur - I don't know. I'm just thinking random thoughts. Sometimes I think our position is not so bad, sometimes I think we're close to hitting the rocks.

I suppose the feeling we try to hold back is the feeling we've had so many times before. It's the deflation of apprently sailing so close to some golden shore, only to find we ebb away at the last minute.

Whatever Levy's doing he's doing a far, far better job than I could, even if I played at Fantasy Chairman. But our privilege and strength is to see things objectively. You might say it's impossible to be objective about things that are largely secret, which is true, But we witness the outward effects of these secrets, and infer the invisible machinations.

You're right about the financial stability we have. It's a glory to behold, when you consider the positions of others. But everyone thinks that relegation is a word that doesn't deserve to be in the vocabulary of their club. The league seems even more competitive this year. No easy games means no easy safety.

No, I'm not expecting this worst-case scenario. But wheels turn. All things pass. Nothing stays the same.

Surely this is a good sign for incoming striker transfers if we are willing to let Pekhart, an ideal Spurs 4th Striker, out on loan.

Or can Spurs quickly call Pekhart back from loan? Not sure how that works honestly.

No mate, but unless we come out the otherside of that window with some damn fine players, This place will become negativity city. Roll on midnight Monday and roll out some shiny new quality players.

PS The draw for the first round of the UEFA Cup is on Friday, might take our minds off the transfer window for all of about 20 minutes.

Agreed. We must have striking options lined up to let him go. This is a positive sign as it means somebody is lined up and Peckhart should get some good experience.

Another spin for you all;

If Berbatoss is gonna stay (in ressies) then we ar 25 mill light, hence why smoothbutt aint comin. To be frank do we really need him with our midfield?, so we spend our Keano cash on Pavlova and get CB & DM from the balance of Keano and the sale of the sunderland lot and others heading out in the next week, now that makes sense to me......doubt it does to anyone else. What i am saying is smoothbutt was a luxury IF berbatoss leaves in good time.

I understand that a transfer was expected to occur after the Pekhart loan, but a just a few mins seems a bit short to me. I wouldn't have flipped out until for at least a few more hours had passed.

1. Berbs makes cock of himslef - Saturday
2. Gen Levy digs his heels in - Monday
3. Peckhart loan - Tues pm
4. Rumour on Pavlova - Tues Later PM
5. Brian Alexander Radio 5 gets to speak to Spurs who gets us all excited (ish)

Good news, it looks like we could well be signing Roman Pavlyuchenko from Spartak Moscow. He is their Captain. Quote from the Guardian website says:

"Russia's Pavlyuchenko says he is joining Tottenham

MOSCOW, Aug 26 (Reuters) - Roman Pavlyuchenko is poised to join Tottenham Hotspur, the Russia striker said on Tuesday.
"I can confirm I'm joining (Spurs)," the Spartak Moscow player told local media. "Right now I'm getting my visa and as soon as it is ready I will fly to England to sign a contract."

For more info on him see: LINK

But a word of caution, according to Wikipedia website: "Unlike other European football leagues, the Russian Premier league typically runs in summer, from March to November, to avoid playing games under the cold and snowy weather in winter."

If we sign him, he would have already played two thirds of Spartak Moscow's season's games, so how much will he have left in the tank for us this season?

In spite of the Berbatov situation which in some ways, it would have been nice to have seen resolved a lot sooner and of course unexpectedly loosing PSB, Wendy will still sort it out. As usual I will only rest easy once he's parading a Spurs shirt at the Lodge. I know a Dutch lass (on a par with those EuroWags JamieSpurs!) in Amsterdam and I'm sure she knows someone who works at Ajax. Don't worry I'm no ITK but I'm just going to probe ;) her gently at first and see if she knows anything about the Huntelaar thing. I just hope Ramos gets it right on sunday and plays his best 11 in their CORRECT positions. Lets hope there's not a whiff of Dawson or BAE about the starting line-up!

I'm hoping that this is the first of 3/4 signings we'll make this week aswell as offloading Berbatov, who apparently got the cold shoulder from all the Spurs players at training yesterday.

Like you I think if he settles he will score lots of goals. Certainly the shot in the arm we have been needing this week. I still think we need a CDM & CB before the window slams shut. I would bet on another striker coming in too, seeing as Pekhart has been loaned to Southampton.

morning all;

So i think it is safe to say Pavlova is our man. 12 mill for a 26yr old is about right and not in the realms of ridiculous price that comes with smoothbutt. Think we need to move on from him and concentrate on another striker (pls Hod let it be Huntelaar) and not heskey/ashton....etc....

So,

Keepers - sorted
Defence - One CB/utility required (corluka likely)
Midfield - Sorted
Strikers - 1 x required assuming Pavlova arrives

Sales Pending;

Stalteri - 1m
Po (not teleltubby, the asian chap) - 2.5m
Rocha - 1.5m
Ghally - (jan window) 3.5m
KevPB - 4m
Taraabt - loan (do not sell unless over 5mill)

Total - 12.5mill

That would buy a CB

The balance of our Keano sale less Pavlova equates to say £7.5mill

use that for another striker

SORTED

I think expecting £2.5m for YPL is optimistic as is £4m for KPB. I think £1m for YPL & £2.5m/£3m is likely KPB. I would like to see Taraabt loaned out to a prem side maybe Hull or WBA would be interested, if not a championship side like Palace, who always seem to give youth a chance.

Realistically I dont think money is a problem especially as I expect Berba to be gone in the next 36-72hrs & the money from his move will be able to fund a miriad of players.

Like i said with Pekhart being loaned out I fully expect another striker to come in. Please let it be Huntelaar!!!

Say we sell those players for a revised £10m & Berba goes for £28m = £38m + the keane sale (£20m) = £58m - £12m (pavyluchenko) = £46m to spend on another 2-3 players.

Huntelaar would cost us £20m IMO and that leaves us with £26m on a CDM & CB. Thats good maths and good money. Levy must be able to do something with £38m-£46m

Yes good article, even if it is tarnished by the pen of a scummer.

O'Hara could be our Cattermole. He's got the pace, stamina and determination.

I'm probably going to get slated for this, but I'm noticing some scary extremes occurring on this site.

Just as I despise the deafitism posted by some, I'm also extremely wary of the jubilation and over excited nature of posts related to the possible signing of the relatively unknown element that is Roman Pavlyuchenko.

Since seeing him in action for Russia during the Euro's, I've seen him play a couple of times for Spartak, and of course the various youtube compilations. As such I'm not treating this with the same high level of excitement expectations as some have shown, as I only reserve this for 'known' entities. It's never going to happen but a Van Nistelroy would have been my first choice. In my dreams, had we signed him - he would guarantee goals and assists by the lorry load. Playing off Horseman would have greatly enhanced Bents game.

However Pavlyuchenko seems more like a poacher than anything. It would be great if he turned into a Russian version of Lineker, but I'm not holding my breath. Everytime I've seem him, his movement has been great but his conversion rate hasn't. If we were complete his signing, I would cheer him on as much as the next spurs player, but like others I would really want Arshavin to come in with him as a pair.

I really can't see him developing an instinctive partnership with Bent - although with their pace and any potential delivery from (Arshavin) Modric, Bently, Bale, Gio, this can be a starting pairing that could score goals. We still don't know what other strikers are being lined up or whether this is it, and if/when they do come - we will not know how quickly the understanding develops.

By all means, keep the faith and look on the bright side, but be prepared. We are still to strengthen our defensive side be it a CH or a DM or both.

To summarise, my plea to you is not to take into the names/prices too much to consideration - what we need is the quality and balance in the team. We won't see this until the lineup is complete.

I completely agree. I think its time O'Hara was given a chance this season. I love his intensity, his passion & drive and of course HE'S A YIDDO!

When thinking about who could be our Cattermole i thought it could be O'Hara or Zokora. O'Hara IMO is by far and away the better footballer of the two.

Cant see Bent & Pav playing up front together. I think Ramos is pretty set on the 4-5-1 / 4-3-3 formation. I'm sure if we can get the chances to him then he could do a job, thats if he is as you say he is a poacher. A fact I welcome as we very rarely seem to score scrappy goals from inside the box.

That said, Bent has been presented with very little in the way of chances so far this season. A fact I put down to absoloutely mind boggling & unreasonable tactical changes by Ramos.

Midfield sorted Todd?

yes mate, we have enough quality in there, the only way i would change my mind is if we got a Senna type player for 5-8 mill, we need to spend our cash on the CB/utility and another striker.

If we were chelski and had a bottomless pit then happy days, we aint so just think we need to spend in these two critical areas

of course its just IMO

I think its a good thing that JS posted that D*xon assesment on how to stop Chelscum. I also saw that last night, but you posting it on here makes me rejoice that other spurs fans don't just expect to attack attack attack.

Whilst we have the makings of a spectacular attacking flair team, we need to balance this out with steel and the unattractive side of the game. Breaking up the oppositions play, and countering with pace and skill is key to our new game. Ideally, we would have the majority of possession so that we'll be doing more attacking than countering, but it has to be well thought through tactically.

In saying this, I believe that the best 11 should be the best 11 suited for the match - not the best 11 on paper or the best 11 for fantasy football leagues. Hence I would also push for the idea of a 4-2-3-1 formation (with Thudd and Ohara as the 2) and in so doing sacrificing say a Jenas and Lennon from the starting lineup. the 3 would be Gio, Modric and Bentley with Bent up front.

It may be that we just try and nullify their game and end up with our only chances to win the game through fouls on front 4 when quickly counter attacking and the set pieces from these.

A low scoring game would be my ideal outcome, with us scoring the odd goal from a set piece to make it 1-0, or 2-1. Perhaps I'm being overly optimistic about our defence? :|

As I said, I think O'Hara could do a Cattermole job against the Blue scum on Sunday, but he's only a young lad with not much experience. In time, I think he could be an excellent DM. We need a leader with experience in the middle, we need it now.

As for the money, don't worry about it, we've got bundles (TV money/Rat money/Profit/Deadwood)

Trembly, that line up looks familiar. ;)

Jamie, whilst I rate O'Hara and love his heart in his sleeve approach, I wouldn't go so far as to say that he's a better footballer than Zokora. I would even say that Zokora has the more accomplished defensive skills which is what we are referring to in this particular slot.

IMO Gunter is probably seen as someone that needs more bedding in time - doing it slowly which is what you should do with young talents - and so Zokora who has done well in the last two games, should remain at right back unless deployed instead of O'Hara as a destroyer in the middle of the park.

A benefit of O'Hara in the middle, is that his distibution would be welcome although if he was employed as the destroyer, then all that is required is a simple pass to Thudd. The fact that Jamie's a natural lefty is another benefit giving further balance to the side, and not leaving Baler/Gio as sole attacking options down the left flank.

I'd actually like to see some focussed responsible play down that flank, so that if/when Baler bombs forward - OHara naturally slots left back to cover that in the event of our attack breaking down. In a 4-3-3, or what for this game my preferred 4-2-3-1, we're in danger of being too narrow. Having a natural lefty of the 2/3 could be the difference.

Zokora is a more cultered player, but IMO, plain dopey. O'Hara is much more switched on and will get right amongst it.

the thing that worries me is that Ramos has been picking such random starting 11's this season. I dont quite understand where he is coming from after seeming to build such a cohesive team in pre-season he's changed the team twice in two games. I just don't get it.

I definitely think we need leadership in CDM but i think O'Hara's energy & terrier like style could benefit us on sunday. Remember how he marked Ronaldo out of the 1-1 game at WHL?? He was playing out of position at LB but Ramos gave him instructions and he stuck to them by the letter. It was a fantastic perfromance & one that meant that I won't worry if I see his name on the team sheet on Sunday lunchtime.

I think we could definitely nick it but of course Chelsea's home record is fantastic and all though my heart says we could win it, my brain says a good display and a draw would be fantatsic.

Reports suggest Pavyluchenko's deal could be wrapped up by Thursday which means he'd be available for Sunday.

Can anyone else see the russian coming off the bench score the winner & dent Mr Abramovich's pride?????

I'd go as far as to say that Zokora is the footballing antichrist!! He can't pass, shoot, or cross. His effort is commendable but his skills are deplorable.

He was majorly to blame for Sunderland's winner on Saturday. His inability to close Murphy down and stop him from putting the cross in cost us a point at least. Gunter is a RB & had an outstanding pre-season & impressed whilst on first team duty last season particularly in the FA cup against ManUre. I think he deserves his chance.

In regards to O'Hara's defensive talents please see my rant about the ManUre 1-1 game when he marked ronaldo out of the match(2nd paragraph last post)
