Once more, FIFA manage to annoy me. This time dealing with Romanian player Adrian Mutu. Apparently, FIFA want Mutu to pay Chelsea 12 million euros as compensation for the cocaine incident. This is possible only with the Premier League ruling that said that following Mutu's failed drug test, he unilaterally voided the contract with Chelsea. But that ruling only happened because Chelsea wanted the contracted voided in the first place.
Chelsea didn't have to let Mutu go. Manchester United didn't let Ferdinand go free of contract when he missed his drug test and received one month MORE than mutu in suspension and a similar fee. Chelsea said they don't condone this kind of behavior and therefore can't allow Adrian to be part of the Chelsea organization any longer. So they did everything possible to place the blame on Mutu for their release at the time.
Now FIFA expect him to pay 12 million euros for something that he didn't want to do - leave Chelsea. He was forced out instead of waiting a 7 month suspension and playing again or being sold, and now they want compensation. It's total crap and another reason to hate Chelsea. And FIFA ruling in favor of Chelsea on this case is even more annoying. They have their own interests, and not the interests of the players in mind. Crap umbrella organization.
I hope he gets a better lawyer and keeps fighting this. It would be a shame if not.
nickel and diming players? Come on this is a professional athlete making millions of dollars, and though he has to pay quite a hefty fine to Chelsea I am sure Mutu won't be hard up for cash anytime in his life. Can't have too much sympathy for a professional athlete blowing it through cocaine use.
He's on a 1.5 million dollar a year contract and due to the incident doesn't have many deals with sponsors. At Juventus he made nothing, and 13 mil to him is a LOT more than 13 mil to Chelsea.
And about the blowing it through cocaine use comment - there's regular drug checks, he would have been caught again if he did do it more. He was down at the moment, problems with his wife, club, etc. and he went a bit overboard one night at some party. We're all human, we all try different things.
that is plain nasty. and furthermore its probably not even legal so I doubt he'd have to pay. As smelly as it is Chelsea suing for 12 mil seems a bit too bizarre to me.
Yeah. I was reading in the Romanian press that the 12 million euros is the whole worth of Mutu right now. It's what his estimated endorsements, salary etc. are worth. He'd be broke completely for failing one drug test. It's a life ruining situation to be honest. So that's why he's insisting to get a 4 million euro contract from Fiorentina now, I think he's a bit scared he'll be dirty poor after years of playing top football. It's a bit outrageous.
