In Your Opnion, Which League Is The Best In Europe?

Monday, 14 July 08, 11:23 AM · Comments(16)

Okay this a very heated discussion and I know many people who blow up over the issue, so I'll just throw this out there to get your views.

For me the I rank the top 6 leagues in Europe as follows:
1) La Liga - Spain
2) Serie A - Italy
3) Premier League - England
4) Portuguese Liga - Portugal
5) Eredivisie - Holland
6) Ligue 1 - France

Okay I will justify my reason for saying Spain has the best League. The La Liga is very competitive, unlike England you cannot choose a winner out of four specific clubs. Middle order teams break into the top 4 four every season and teams who you would think are destined to perform are sometimes relegated. The technicality of the league is on another level, and teams are beaten largely based on who makes a mistake first. Another reason why I say La Liga is the best league is because the best players play in the league or want to do so. The biggest stars from around the globe are always drawn to the league, Henry is an example with his recent move to Barcelona and more recently Cristiano Ronaldo, who has openly expressed his desire to join Real Madrid. Moreover the league produces the hottest young talent through their youth teams, the likes of Fernando Torres, Messi, Bojan Krikic, Giovanni Dos Santos, David Villa, David Silva and Sergio Ramos have all been raised in the youth ranks of clubs in Spain.

I could go on and on giving reasons why I believe La Liga is the best league but you go ahead and voice your opinion, I'm eager to hear your comments.

k you say the Premier League and that's your opinion but think about it why are they always struggling to convince the best players to play in their league Ronaldinho for example looks like he will never play in the Premier League. After having basically two opportunities in his career to do so. Also why are the biggest players in the Premier League always keen on moves to Spain or Italy

Sorry, can not agree with you at all. I definately feel that our very own Primiership is the 'strongest' league in Europe (not the world, we could never prove that). Why do we never see names such as Ronaldinho here?... They know they would not be able to adapt to the fast physical nature of the Premiership, we have seen it time and time again. The English game is almost a different sport altogether. If a top player learns his game in Spain or Italy and spends the majority of their carrear there, it is inevitable that they will find it extremely tough to adapt to the Premiership (and visa versa). BUT.... That is not to say that it is the best, just as you can not proclaim La Liga to be the best. The truth is they are entirely different games, and it depends on the spectator which is the 'best'. To me personally I prefer The English League, for the simple reason that it is infinately more entertaining, in terms of fast phisycal football. I find the Spanish and Italian leagues a bit too slow for my liking (climate perhaps?). As for the likes of Henry and Ronaldo, Henry obviously wnted to experience another league, and Ronaldo is a prime example of footballing greed. The quality of players in each league is most certainly on a par. It is personal preference as to which style of football an individuall prefers which dictates what is deemed as the 'best league'.

oh Davros Malloy! my my my you hit the nail on the head. It's really down to which style you like the most. I agree with you 100%. I prefer the Spanish style because of the killer passes and how every attacking and defensive play is so well orchestrated. The EPL is fast but lots of times there is a lot of flare and many goals happen by chance in my opinion. In my view not beautiful soccer, teams tend to win ugly a lot in the EPL. However I disagree with what you said about Ronaldinho, trust me he could play anywhere!

I would say that both Spanish & English Leagues, are on par with each other at present.

Although the Spanish has been stronger in the past... The mere fact that 3 English teams were in the CL Semi Final says a lot about how strong the Premiership has become.

It is not technically as good as in Spain, but it's fast & furious and many would agree more exciting? But again as has been said on here already, that is down to personal preference.

lol i knew someone would bring up the fact that they were three EPL teams in the CL semi-finals but remember we have to take into account that many of Europe's strongest teams were not in the champions league last season Bayern & Juve are two perfect examples...

To be fair, the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A take turns on being the best league out there. Ranking-wise, the Premier League is ranked 1st now. The problem I feel is the debt to equity ratio in the top Premiersides will be the downfall to the Premier League in the long term.

Theres no "best" league in Europe. The Premiership League is the World's most watched football/soccer league. That down to the pace of the game. If we are talking skill-wise and technicality of the players, then probably Serie A would be the "best" league.

Even if you look at it from a different point of view, you could say the Eredivisie is the best league. Just look at this seasons Eredivisie, there are a few teams who will be aiming to finish in the top 3 spots. Look at the Premier League, there are no teams to rival Liverpool, Chelsea, Man United, Arsenal. I suppose Man City can/will do but before the Jan window opens I won't comment on that. Plus the youth systems. The standard of youth systems in Spain, Italy, Portugal, Holland are all better than those of youth academies here in the UK.

I'll sum it all up. The Premier League is the most watched, because it's the most exciting from a spectators point a view. However, La Liga and Serie A players are in general a lot more technical than those in the Premier League (there are exceptions but I'm talking about the majority). Personally I think the best leagues are the Eredivisie or the Bundesliga. Both are competitive, the leagues aren't full of money like the Euro top three leagues, and both I find theres a lot less diving. But I agree with the people above, personal preference is what decides the "best league" in Europe, but there isn't a "best league", it's the league you prefer. Oh and just one more point, most of the big Euro players want to play in La Liga and Serie A over the Premier League. I guess not every footballer wants to come just for the big pay checks and the traditional long ball play.

I don't know if I would say Everdivise or Bundesliga are the the best leagues right now but I do agree with you on the fact that it all boils down to the league we have preferences for. Honestly Everdivise is underrated way UNDERRATED!!!! If you look at the quality of the coaches and players within that league it is ridiculous, just look at Real Madrid, they basically have the whole dutch national side in their squad Van Nistelroy, Robben, Van der Vart and Sneijder....all dutch players...it is evident their league is superb talent wise if they had the financial clout that Italy, Spain and England have they probably would be the best league for me...I remember when I first started watching football I was told by an elder that if I wanted to see the way football should be played to watch the Everdivise and they were right

spanish league players have the most technical ability for sure but its very slow and can be boring to watch at times. players seem afraid to lump the ball long at times and this can lead to very long boring periods of the ball being passed to and fro with no real outcome.

The premiership on the other hand is like the opposite of this. The players in general do not poccess a lot of technical skill and this results in a much faster paced game as the ball does tend to spend too much time in the air and not enough being played on the ground. Though exciting and improving this can lead to frustration watching as there is a definite lack of ground and technical skill, so imo there is both advantages and disadvantages to both leagues and no one league is better then the other
