TerrasBlog 10/05/08 - The concluding part of my interview with club Chairman Malcolm Curtis

Tuesday, 10 June 08, 12:50 PM · Comments (1)

Thanks for all of the positive feedback for the first part of the interview published yesterday (and thanks for the couple of cynical comments to!).

I wont bore you with disclaimers and all that today, just re-read the intro from part one.

Enjoy and feel free to comment by emailing me through this site.

TerrasBlog-On that point (the differences between business and football), how difficult was it to remove Jason Tindall knowing everyone wanted him to succeed?

Malcolm Curtis- Very difficult everyone at WFC wanted Jason to succeed, he bravely took over at a very difficult time it was probably just a bit too soon for him . We gave Jason every support we could but the table doesn’t lie there were also many other areas off the pitch that we felt needed attention it was a massive decision and although I consulted with the whole board it is a decision that ultimately comes down to you as the chairman. I suppose in my heart of hearts looking back I  knew after we were thrashed by Ebbesfleet on the back of that awful home game against Salisbury  on new year’s day that we would have to change things ....... it was just a case of when.

The decision was really playing on my mind through early January and I was not sleeping well I got up very early one Sunday and went for a long cold winters walk at Lyme Regis and played over all the likely scenarios and made the final decision. I phoned Gary from the beach that Sunday and from then in we acted swiftly and decisively to change things and history would now indicate that it was the right decision.

I think Jason still has the potential to be a good manager and I wish him well I hope he can one day turn around and stick two fingers up at me.

TerrasBlog - If you could choose anyone in the world, whom would you get to cut the ribbon at the new stadium when it opens?

Malcolm Curtis- I would say my father but he died a few yrs back, its all his fault really as he gave me my determination and bloody mindlessness to take a task like this on. Therefore I would say Nelson Mandela as he had that determination and conviction in his beliefs to keep going and keep believing, not sure he will accept the invite though !

TerrasBlog - If money was no object, which star of world football would you bring to Weymouth FC?

Malcolm Curtis - Crumbs this is becoming like TV quick .....Past stars , Zinedine Zidane  watched him play for Juventus in a champions league quarter final, unbelievable command of the game or Cantona as much as i dislike man u he was different class, still playing Thierry Henry or maybe the man of the moment Ronaldo would be nice ! In reality any player that has the desire , skill and conviction to play for WFC and not one that just puts his hand out is welcome !

TerrasBlog - Who is your idol?

Malcolm Curtis - Again hard to say one........ Nelson Mandela ( everyone should read his autobiography long walk to freedom)  I guess predictably Richard Branson for his success in business whilst being very dyslexic, JFK, Martin Luther King.

TerrasBlog - Do you read TerrasBlog? And were you aware that we used to sell boxer shorts with the name of ex-manager Steve Claridge on them?

Malcolm Curtis - I hadn’t until recently but will now ..... No I was not aware that we had Steve Claridge boxer shorts but strangely I am not surprised

TerrasBlog - Can I have five minutes off the bench in a pre-season friendly?

Malcolm Curtis - John Hollins along with Alan and Gary make all team decisions, I am afraid you will have to contact the club !

Boo and hiss!!! so despite my couple of weeks running in the evenings the Chairman wont give me five minutes off the bench!

Nothing more to add other than my thanks to Malcolm Curtis (again) and to Weymouth FC for their time and trouble in arranging this interview. I hope that we can do it again sometime during the season!

Catch you all on the next blog!
