So only 364 days until my next birthday and rather than a doormat of cards and gift vouchers (although there were plenty) I had bills and a renewal notice.
Because, dear readers, as well as Weymouth FC I have a mistress. Another club, another team. Closer to my Peterborough base whom I also watch, and I suppose if you are going to be a two club supporter and one of your clubs is the off field circus that is the Terras, then your other team should be Arsenal.
Well run and stable of management and purveyors of the finest football in all of the galaxy. Its the ying and yang principle!
But, and I will whisper it quietly, the Premiership and the hype and money surrounding it has been leaving me cold for a while now. So when the Arsenal Silver Membership renewal form landed on my birthday doormat promising me a ticket for every home match, I wasn't as instant in my desire to send them money as I have been every other season.
And maybe Weymouth FC has something to do with that. I watched the Terras 10 times more than I watched the Gunners last season. And in 10 matches, probably didn't spend much more than the one at Emirates. But it isn't all about money. I have a stash of shares from the Wessex Stadium and in years gone by would join players in the bar for a pint after games. You feel closer to the action and the team at Non-League.
I know Ashley Cole gets the blame for a lot of things that have happened in this world, but his greed and desire to get away from Arsenal for Roman's millions was a real tipping point in my relationship with the Premier League. Let them drown in their money was my feeling, a sensation that has yet to abait.
So will I renew? Who knows, probably because if I don't I know there is going to be a match I desperately want to go to and wont be able to get tickets for if not...
