TerrasBlog 13/11/2008

Thursday, 13 November 08, 07:07 PM

Welcome back to TerrasBlog! I can reveal that the truth behind the site being down was something far less sinister than originally thought.

Ole Ole had problems behind the scenes and some of their blogs went down as a result. On behalf of them and this site, apologies for that. We hope that now we are back online your enjoyment will continue unabaited (although the TerrasBlogger is off to Amsterdam this weekend on a jolly so there may not be too many updates until Monday)...

So what a day, another tumultuous day in the history of Weymouth FC and another day where the genuine fan of the club is left shaking their head and looking miserable.

I'll tell you how bad things are with our f**king club... I am getting emails from Newcastle fans telling me what a shambles we are...

Our manager gets put on "gardening leave" and it is left to the Crawley Town Manager to inform the world? not good enough Weymouth FC, shame on you.

We are turning into this lot in terms of the comedy/terrible situations that befall us and the wider world's patience with us is starting to wear thin. JHMBE has been a miracle worker for this football club. He kept us in the Blue Square Premier last season when I had given us up as relegated. In having to get rid of most of that team he has put together a side that is comfortable in mid table albeit with the disapointment of the FA Cup exit. He has done this against a back drop of his better players being up for sale (only Michael Malcolm has left granted) and the various scenario's surrounding who actually owns the football club/land/ground/who knows what the hell else.

And he has done this by being savvy and canny and all the good things we know he is. If he has done something wrong to breach his contract then of course the consequences are there, but most free thinking individuals will be crying foul. A club so bereft of money cannot afford to pay a high profile manager off to get him away from their wage bill. This is so convenient that it is hard to find it a coincidence. I wait to be convinced otherwise.

But for the job the man has done for the club, against some very long odds I would say he should be entitled to some slack if he has made a mistake... we shall see.

Its just so unsavoury and leaves even more of a bitter taste in my mouth. Because let's be honest, he isn't coming back. Northwich did the same with Dino Maamria the other week. Maybe we saw it was possible to get rid of the manager without massive outlay and thought it was the way forward. Maybe.

The other big news surrounds Conference South minnows Dorchester Town FC's chairman Eddie Mitchell saying he would like to buy the Terras and merge them with his club. The Wessex would still be sold off for housing, which let's face it is going to happen anyway and we would move to their Avenue Stadium.

Dorchester & Weymouth FC could be a step nearer after todays article in the Western Gazette. Strategically coming out on the same day JHMBE gets suspended... you can always hide news if you want to.

Now you may be surprised to hear that I am not altogether against a merger. I know this gets up a number of peoples noses, but I have held this stance for about 10 years now and feel that if done right we could benefit.

Dorchester and Weymouth are too close together for both to have successful sides in the Conference/Conference South, in my opinion. A proper merger with everyone on board would make the sum of both clubs greater than the individual parts. I think we can all see that.

The issue is that football supporters dont think with a clinical business mind. They allow emotion into their thoughts (you can see I am doing that in tonights post!!), which is why Liverpool and Everton will never ground share even though both clubs will spend tens of millions of pounds more than they need to in getting identical stadiums (one blue, one red) a few hundred metres from each other... in any other part of business or life that would be seen as ridiculous.

Ahh, but I hear you cry the old cliche "football isnt like every other business"... maybe that's why so many clubs are in such a bloody mess then?

The same thing applies to us (on a smaller scale than Merseyside), would people rather support an AFC Weymouth in the Dorset league or merge with that lot over the hill and still be in the Conference structure?

Me, I am sorry, I would take the latter at this precise moment. Maybe Eddie Mitchell knows that, maybe he wants to swoop in and save us and our lowest ebb...

TerrasBlog 01/10/08

Wednesday, 01 October 08, 07:21 AM

Very, very little to report in Terras-land this morning. No midweek match gives everyone time to recover after a less than satisfactory week of off the park speculation.

It is clear that most people you speak to (including Terras fans in this part of the world)  have their reservations about the true financial position of the club, but the longer we go without a fire sale or some other negative actions the better.

On the park and a week that started with a home defeat, middled with a draw with the leaders and ended with a win at the bottom club kind of sums up Weymouth FC... inconsistent!

The defeat has been felt more firmly by Northwich who have put manager Dino Maamria on garden leave. It is a shame if his time is up in Cheshire as he was doing a grand job with resources as limited as those available to JHMBE. If the fans and the board have now turned on him this says a lot to me about the continuing diminshing standards of behavior in British football.

On a positive note, Terras striker PJ Dubios has told the Dorset Echo (here) that he is keen to keep a starting place in the Weymouth line up. Unfit at the start of the season he is now beginning to get amongst the goals and as he says, with Money Michael Malcolm, Chris McPhee and the Beaver we should be able to unlock defences.

Right, off to work for me...

TerrasBlog - 25/09/2008

Thursday, 25 September 08, 08:00 PM

Damn my paper shoulders and neck.

This injury is keeping me off the bike and away from training and I did it washing my hair in the shower. Stil I got a massage to relieve the stress and ease off the broken body, but to say I am feeling a little under the weather is an understatement.

Thank goodness for the Terras and their 2-2 draw with Crawley Town the other night. I was away from Solent so we had a better chance of getting something from the match.

Our ex-captain Simon Weatherstone opened the scoring early doors for the Creepies. What a let down he was. Scored goals at every club he has been at apart from Weymouth... and then comes back and bangs one in within a minute. Chump.

We got back into the match and even went ahead. It was nice to see the 'Nanny' get back among the goals and you hope that the players are keeping their heads despite all of the off the field bollocks that attaches itself to our club.

Crawley got back into it with less than 10 minutes to go, but we would have taken the points beforehand so we should still be happy now.

On to the off-field stuff and it is interesting to note that there has been (according to JHMBE) been no interest in any of the players on the list. Now whether or not you believe the reasons given for the players being made available or not is up to you. I have an open mind.

But whatever Michael Malcolm and Scott Doe may or may not have been up to off the park shouldn't be serious enough to get listed.

It sends out the wrong signal from the club and if I were a predator waiting to sign the players I would wait a little longer to see how desperate Weymouth were going to get for money and if they would accept less.

I don't see why it was neccessary to make public the names...

As with everyone else though I have to sit tight and await the official word from the Wessex.

It is important thought that JHMBE is allowed to get on with preparing his players for Northwich this weekend. That is a great opportunity for us to get back on track with a win, and despite being the sort of fixture we usually get nothing out of, I hope we can return with 3 points.

Keep the faith.

TerrasBlog 23/09/08 - Pressure mounts at the Wessex

Tuesday, 23 September 08, 07:22 AM

Without a win in four matches and with nearly a third of the first team squad up for sale, things are never dull following Weymouth FC.

As posted on TerrasBlog before the season started, what this club needs is a period of stability and a season with only one Chairman and one Manager. You never know, we might still get that, but I wonder whether events over the weekend and yesterday are making that less likely.

The key names in the list of players up for grabs are last years player of the season Scott Doe, and leading scorer Michael Malcolm. The Manager JHMBE was still talking about aiming for the top half of the Blue Square Premier a few weeks ago (before this bad run of form started). If we are going to be selling arguably our best two players, you suspect that vision will soon be revised.

And we are all sensible and adult enough to know the issues surrounding football clubs at the moment. £14 to get in to a match before you have a cup of tea is a lot of money when people are losing their jobs and hearing about tough economic times ahead. Add into the equation that the stadium is out on a limb out of town and your passing social club trade is next to non-existent too.

I do admire the Chairman for trying to get this resolved, but what this week has shown is that action and investment is needed now, as opposed to four years time if the new stadium comes to realisation.

JHMBE is a shrewd operator having worked on this hand to mouth basis at Crawley Town, who ironically we play this evening, and if he remains at the club I am sure he can uncover another Chris Blackburn.

Despite the constant moaning on the forums (myself included, but I am taking actions to address that in a positive way for the benefit of the club) the fans of this club do deserve some good news for a change.

All this talk of "doing a Yeovil" must leave them laughing even more at our expense.

What will happen in the match tonight? I suspect pacesetters Crawley will win, but I am confident Terras will put up a strong performance if they are to lose. Just depends on who is in the team I suppose...

TerrasBlog 14/08/08

Sunday, 14 September 08, 08:08 PM

Briefest of the brief TerrasBlog today.

Had loads to do after training before I could sit down and watch some sport. Even now the Tour of Britain cycling is playing in the background and I want to get back to it.

Nothing more to add to the Terras draw with Burton yesterday. It was an important result and you have to say that after four matches without a win now, three points is a necessity to get things fully back on track in the next match.

In fact two home matches in quick succession will be another barometer of where our true abilities will be placed come May. More on the Kidderminster and Crawley matches to come during the week of course.

There is going to be some midweek football for your correspondent as Yaxley take on Needham Market in an FA Cup replay. CuckoosBlog is going quite well, so I have no issue in giving it a plug on here!!!

Give it a click and keep up to date with the blue and black army!

Cuckoos Crest 1st Team

I suppose it is a reminder of how far Weymouth Football Club has come in the last few seasons that they have no need to worry anymore about these early stages of the FA Cup. It is remarkably exciting though isn't it? No-one with a Terras persuation needs any reminders of the brilliant experience playing Nottingham Forest was and I hope that we can be that non-league club (and there is always one every season) who takes a big scalp and comes to the nations attention.

Anyway good luck to the Cuckoos on Tuesday night, let's hope they can keep their run going and you never know. Another couple of rounds and the Terras could be visiting Huntindgonshire.
