Where Are They Now?

Friday, 11 July 08, 03:48 PM

With the new season kicking off in just over a months time, I thought it would be a good idea to go through the bulk of the Irish squad and note where and for whom they will be playing in the upcoming campaign. As you would expect (and hope), the spine of the team, Given, Dunne and Keane will all be plying their trade in the Premier League next season. This, of course, is fantastic news as it's important that we have as many players as possible playing top level football.

Damien Duff, John O'Shea, Andy Reid, Daryl Murphy and Dean Kiely are all more than likely going to be playing in the Premier League as well next season if they decide to stay at their respective clubs. Unfortunately, Stephen Hunt, Kevin Doyle and Shane Long will be playing Championship football next season. Hunt and Doyle are two players whom I believe are good enough to play in the Premier League, but it all depends on whether or not someone will be willing to spend the money to buy them during the transfer market.

Aidean McGeady, who looks as though he will play a major role in Trapattoni's new set up will be playing for SPL side Celtic next season as will the up and coming 21 year old defender, Darren O'Dea who has yet to earn his first cap. McGeady has done some major improving at Celtic over the last couple of seasons and he's more than likely gained the attention of some Premiership clubs. However, I don't think McGeady will leave Celtic just yet.

Other players who we might see playing for Ireland over the coming months are Anthony Stokes (Sunderland, Premier League), Lee Carsley (Birmingham, Championship), Kevin Kilbane (Wigan, Premier League), Steven Reid (Blackburn, Premier League) and Steve Finnan (Liverpool, Premier League). However, with the transfer market almost in full swing, many of these players may be loaned or sold to other clubs.

If any transfer are made that are significant to the Ireland squad, you can be sure to read about them here.
