The downside of playing for Bayern? Lederhosen | Photos

Monday, 05 October 09, 11:22 PM

Well, you all know that I am a VfB nerd. But, this is one for the funny files. The *wonderful* people with Bayern Munich have a tradition of appearing at Oktoberfest every year. This last Sunday, they kept with the tradition. Here are some of the photos from the event. Some of them are going to make you laugh, some will make you go "Awwww!", while others are just going to make you say, "WTF!?" Enjoy!!

Also, if anyone has a pic of Tymoshchuk at this, I would LOVE to have a linky link! :D

Ribery hints at NOT leaving

Sunday, 13 September 09, 02:37 PM

Franck Ribery has hinted he could soon sign a new deal with Bayern Munich.

The France midfielder was one of the hottest properties of the summer with big-spending Real Madrid one of the clubs doing their utmost to snife him away from Bayern.

Ribery remained with the Bundesliga giants and has now revealed he could very well extend his contract which is set to expire in 2011.

"The club already knows what they want and I have on my side an idea of what could happen,'' he said. "In football things can sometimes happen really quickly. A simple meeting and everything could be decided. There have not yet been any meetings but that could happen really quickly.''

Ribery is still not 100% fit after a succession of leg injuries and is yet to make his first start of the season.

However, he came off the bench to score his side's third goal in their 5-1 drubbing of Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. And the 26-year-old insists he is loving life at the Allianz Arena.

He added: "I feel loved at Bayern. It makes me feel happy that important people at the heart of the club are showing their confidence in me. The reaction of the supporters at my return also made me happy. This gives me a lot of strength.''

Danke to ESPN Soccernet for the story!

OFFICIAL: Robben Leaving Madrid

Thursday, 27 August 09, 05:04 PM

With the summer transfer deadline fast approaching, Bayern are keen to bring in one further player for this season’s squad. Arjen Robben from Spanish league runners-up Real Madrid is the target for Germany’s most successful club. “That’s correct, We’re interested in signing Arjen Robben. He’s on his way to Munich," FCB general manager Uli Hoeneß confirmed on Thursday evening.

After his arrival in Munich, Robben will report to the club for a medical. The player, his representatives and the FCB board would then sit down and work through his personal terms, Hoeneß said. “We already have an agreement with Real Madrid,” reported the Bayern general manager, voicing hopes that the man capped 43 times by the Netherlands might have put his name to a four-year contract by Friday midday. “He’s one of the best attacking midfielders in Europe. He’s always been one of the players we wanted,” Hoeneß said.

In the right circumstances, Robben could even make his debut in Saturday’s crunch home meeting with champions VfL Wolfsburg, the general manager continued. “If it all goes perfectly, his name will go on the official transfer list tomorrow. That would make it theoretically possible for him to play on Saturday, although absolutely everything would have to go without a hitch,” Hoeneß warned.

Robben’s position within the team has already been discussed and agreed. “Our intention is to have Robben play on the right and Ribéry on the left,” explained Hoeneß, expressing delight at the potential for “an even more attractive team.”

Mark van Bommel, who played alongside Robben for PSV Eindhoven between 2002 and 2004, told FCB.tv that Robben was “an outstanding player in the same class as Franck Ribéry. If he decides to come, he’ll definitely make us stronger as a team.” Along with Van Bommel and Edson Braafheid, Robben would be the third Dutch star in the Bayern squad.

Hoeneß also commented on Bayern’s further plans before the transfer deadline next Monday. “At the moment we’re not planning any further activity. But three or four days ago, I’d never have thought Arjen Robben would be coming to Munich." The general manager did not rule out players leaving the club: “If a player came to us before Monday, because he reckoned his chances of playing had gone down, we’d be absolutely ready to talk.”

Thankies to the official FC Bayern website for the story

The Diego Saga (Part 18789748937438971739872138963875782948764)

Thursday, 07 May 09, 09:53 AM

Good Thursday morning everyone! So, while making my rounds during English class today, I came across this. It is really odd, but it shows the beauty...if you can say that....about transfer rumors and deals and the window.

According to ESPN, Diego (pictured here) has not left Werder and will not. The whole idea is just another rumor that has been started.

"There has been a meeting between Juventus and Werder, but we can confirm that no agreement was reached," stated Bremen's director of sport Klaus Allofs

Juventus have reported to have agreed with Diego's agent, but have fallen a little bit below the asking price of the struggling Bundesliga team.

Diego has been on the radar for many bigger named teams such as Bayern. The rumor is that Bayern are ready to put in a bid over the 30 million euro asking price for Diego. This would mean that Munich would have their replacement for Frank Ribery, who has been linked to Barcelona, Chelsea, and Manchester United.

The Turin club have dropped out of the title race having not won in five Serie A games but coach Claudio Ranieri has been told his job is safe until the end of the season.

Other signings are expected to boost their prospects next term. Winger Pavel Nedved is due to retire at the end of this season.

Then, you come to another story from our friends at Soccerway that have claimed that the deal is done and Diego is getting his bags packed, heading for Italy.

According to the website, Juve offered 25 million euros for the Brazilian playmaker.

So, will he, or won't he? We will have to see.

Leverkusen Shock Bayern

Thursday, 05 March 09, 09:57 AM

What seemed like an impossible task for the boys from Leverkusen, has been done. Bayern are out of the DFB Cup.

The backdrop to this cup tie gave a hint of what might follow. 50,500 fans came to the LTU Arena to witness this tie of the quarter finals and they have, at the same time, set a record attendance for a Bayer 04 home game. Despite recent setbacks in the Bundesliga, Bruno Labbadia's team soon settled down to the task at hand.

Referee Florian Meyer's whistle for the kick-off was just like lighting the Bayer 04 fireworks. With Lukas Sinkiewicz at the center of defense in place of the injured Manuel Friedrich, the Werkself put Bayern under pressure from the start of the game. Two or three players were always on the spot to chase down the ball or the opposition. Even the superstar Franck Ribery was forced to cover back and launch the ball out of defense to give his side a breather.

Each time they won the ball, Bayer 04 pressed forward relentlessly. Patrick Helmes issued the first warning shot after just four minutes. A minute later, Bayer's leading goalscorer forced Bayern Munich keeper Michael Rensing into making a wonderful save. Bayern only threatened Rene Adler's goal for the first time just before the half-time whistle but the Germany keeper saved brilliantly from Hamit Altintop and Franck Ribery.

With the Bayern squad weaknened due to the fact that Luca Toni and Philipp Lahm were absent and Bastian Schweinsteiger was on the bench, Bayern found it difficult to make headway against a solid Werkself defence. FCB coach Jürgen Klinsmann was forced to admit as much:

“Bayer were lively throughout the tie and they put us under pressure. They did it really well.” Only a goal or two was missing. But that would all change in the second period.

Bayer continued in the same vein after the break and the capacity crowd did not have to wait too long for goals. Lukas Sinkiewicz won the ball in midfield, broke away and put Tranquillo Barnetta through. The Swiss midfielder drilled his shot from the edge of the box into the bottom right of the goal. The crowd erupted and Bayer were let off the leash. Arturo Vidal headed home the second goal from a corner just after the hour mark with Bayern left floundering. (2-0)

And when Patrick Helmes made it 3-0 after Michal Kadlec had brilliantly won the ball on 71 minutes the LTU Arena was already starting to celebrate Bayer's progress to the semi-finals. But Bayern would not be Bayern if they failed to fight back. Within two minutes, Lucio pulled a goal back and Mirsolav Klose finally broke free from the excellent Lukas Sinkiewicz and Henrique to make the score 3-2.

“That was the only small blemish in an otherwise perfect performance,”

enthused Bayer 04 director of sport Rudi Völler said. The tie suddenly turned into a real cup battle. Bayer needed a couple of minutes to pull themselves together. During this phase of the game Adler made brilliant reflex saves from Ribery and Klose to keep Leverkusen on course for a semi-final spot. But Labbadia's side did not shirk the task at hand.

The hosts produced a number of promising counter-attacks. Bayern keeper Rensing had to risk everything to keep Kießling out on 83 minutes. But he was left stranded in added time. Substitute Angelos Charisteas chased down Martin Demichelis on the halfway line, won the ball and set up Kießling to seal the 4-2 win in injury time to the great relief of the Bayer fans.

“I think we've seen an outstanding cup game with a deserved winner. We didn't let Bayern off the hook for most of the game,”

explained a very happy Patrick Helmes.

And Bayer coach Labbadia showed pride in his team's performance:

“I'm very happy for the team. They've put in a great effort and have earned their just reward.”

Bayer 04 are in the semi-final of the DFB Cup for the seventh time in the club's history. Leverkusen have won the Cup once, back in 1993. The possible opponents on 21 or 22 April are Hamburg SV, Werder Bremen or 1. FSV Mainz 05, who shockingly beat Schalke. Just one more win and the dream of a cup final appearance on May 30 at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin will come true.

Helmes stated:

“And we want to get there, most of us have never had the chance to play in a cup final. But tonight everybody has had the chance to experience great quarter-final night and it will be talked about long into the future."

LOL Picture of the Day!

Thursday, 12 February 09, 09:43 PM

Hmmm, I was looking at some of the pictures on the UEFA site and then I came across this one and I was thinking, "Hmmm, does UEFA know something that we don't?"

Ballack

Notice how it says, "FC Bayern Munich."

I found this "boo-boo" amusing. I am sure that the people at UEFA are great people. But, this was great!

Willy Sagnol Says Goodbye To Bayern

Wednesday, 04 February 09, 09:58 AM

Today is a sad day for Bayern fans. (And a great day for VfB fans! :D) Today, former French international Will Sagnol has decided to call it a career.

The defender, who has been suffering from injury problems, said in an official press conference,

"That's the end. The pain is too great for me to continue playing. It's something I have to accept. I'm devastated and it's hard to take. I'd always dreamed it would end differently, and I'd have liked to keep playing for at least another few years,”

Sagnol, 31, had to make this very tough decision with the help of the best doctors all throughout Europe.

"I've tried everything in recent weeks, but the doctors are unanimous: I can't go on.”

Sagnol even admitted that walking has caused him to be in constant pain. As he is unable to exercise his official profession of footballer, Sagnol will now file for the status of "sports invalid", required by both club and player for insurance and other technical reasons. Even though he played for the rival of my favorite team, I still think that he is one hell of a player and he will be missed.

Bayern v. Steaua Match Review

Wednesday, 26 November 08, 08:04 AM

Two second-half goals from Miroslav Klose and another from Luca Toni ensured FC Bayern München marched triumphantly into the UEFA Champions League knockout stages with an emphatic victory against FC Steaua Bucureşti.

Unbeaten run

Though Olympique Lyonnais' defeat of ACF Fiorentina in the night's other Group F fixture meant Bayern would have progressed regardless of their result, the German champions never looked as if they would need a helping hand. After a frustrating first half, Klose finally broke the deadlock three minutes before the hour and Toni swiftly dived to head in another, Klose rounding off an impressive display with a third goal 19 minutes from time to continue the home team's unbeaten run in this season's competition and send them into the last 16 for a fifth successive UEFA Champions League campaign.

Bayern determination
With Jürgen Klinsmann prowling the technical area from kick-off, there was a clear sense of Bayern's determination to ensure they would decide their own destiny. Robinson Zapata was called upon to block Toni's point-blank effort three minutes in, while the Italian was unlucky to see a clean strike from Franck Ribéry's low cross skid just wide six minutes later. The German titleholders' fluidity – borne of the confidence built by an eleven-game unbeaten run – was stretching Steaua, though Dayro Moreno did conjure a long-range shot that sped into the midriff of Bayern goalkeeper Michael Rensing.

Klose close

Released by Bănel Nicoliţă down the right, the Colombian midfielder then fed Steaua captain Mirel Rădoi, whose acrobatic volley missed the target. That scare sparked an instant Bayern riposte, Toni's header from a Ribéry cross being parried by the alert Zapata and a lunging Klose turning the rebound over. Nicoliţă's busy presence on the right gave Bayern cause for concern though, and the Romanian international picked out Dorin Goian with a cross, but the defender failed to get sufficient power on his shot.

Two-goal burst
Slotting into central defence in place of the injured Martín Demichelis, Daniel Van Buyten almost presented Steaua with an opening when a ball ricocheted off his knee, allowing Nicoliţă to send in a dangerous cross that Lucio hacked clear. Bayern, though, continued to threaten at the other end, and two goals in four minutes took the game away from Steaua. Zé Roberto burst to the left-hand byline, and though his centre was miscued by Toni, Massimo Oddo picked up the loose ball on the opposite flank, crossing for Ribéry to head goalwards and Klose swooped to score. The Germany striker then turned provider, cleverly flicking Lucio's raking ball towards Toni, who collided with Zapata as he bravely dived to head in.

Final flourish
With Steaua pushing up looking for a goal to bring them back into the contest, Klose then delivered the finishing touch. Ribéry sped down the right, and with the visitors' defence spread, found Klose in space. A low finish left Zapata helpless and means Steaua must now beat Fiorentina in their final fixture to claim third in the section, while Bayern travel to Lyon on Matchday 6 to determine who wins the section.
