Sol defeats rival FC Gold Pride 1-0

Once again the Sol has defeated the FC Gold Pride. They did it twice during preseason with 2-0 wins, an again when it counted for something.

Both teams battled it out for a full 90 minutes throughout the 90 degree weather of Los Angeles. This is the third consecutive win and shutout victory for the Sol, leading the league with 9 points.

The first half was going back and forth the whole time, with both teams getting very close to scoring. In the 45th minute, Aya Miyama received a great pass, but Gold Pride keeper Nicole Barnhart forced her to take a shot that went just wide right of the post.

In the second half, the Sol came out with more energy, a different line-up, and played better than in the first half. Just 2 minutes into the second half, Aly Wagner chipped a perfect ball behind the back line. Marta was making a run between 2 defenders, beat them to the ball and shot it past Barnhart.

Gold Pride had more possession of the ball, but just couldn't finish their chances. Rachel Buehler did an exceptional job for the Pride's back line. The entire defense did a great holding back the Sol's offense, except on one occasion, and that is when LA took advantage of it.

The Sol is now the only undefeated team in the league, and has yet to allow a goal. They will be on the road for their next 2 games. They play against St. Louis Athletica on April 26 at 3 pm CT. Then they head over to the east coast to face Kelly Smith, Kristine Lilly, Amy Rodriguez, and the rest of the Boston Breakers on May 2nd at 7 pm ET.

The week after that, Boston will come over to the west coast to play against the Sol on May 10th at 1pm PT.
