Beckham and Shaq

Thursday, 19 July 07, 04:19 PM · Comments(16)

"Bringing a past-his-prime David Beckham to the United States to sell soccer to Americans would be like bringing a past-his-prime Shaquille O'Neal to Mexico to try to sell basketball to Mexicans".

This statement is made by Gabriel Ochoa, sports editor of newspaper La Opinion. Woww. I think this is kind of insulting for David who deserves respect. He's one of England's best player in History and is still at his top level. You will see, Mister Ochoa.

What do you think about that ?

yea david beckham is a little past his prime but that doesnt mean that he still isnt an excellent futbol player, as for making the sport more popular in the u.s. is a long shot but its worth a try

Did anyone see becks play these past few months with madrid? He even got recalled to England! He can still play brilliantly even if he is past his prime. And he wont be able to sell the sport of
soccer by himself. He will only help.

David Beckham is NOT one of Enlgand's best ever players and is NOT at his top level, so GET THAT OUT OF YOUR FUCKING HEAD! Anyway, I think Beckham WILL be able to sell the sport of football in this
country, but it'll take a couple of years.

Sort of a rough comment but Becks is past his prime and thats what the MLS is doing by bringing him in. Shaq would be the man in the Mexican league

They're called world champions in the NBA because the best players like tony parker, Yao Ming, Dirk Nowitski, etc flock to the US to play here. And because the National team has like how many medals?
A lot

Beckham is not even in the top 10 of the best of Englando. He is overrated, he used to be good in his days of Manchester and had a few good moments with Real Madrid. Shaq he is a good player I
actually like that comparison. But Beckham will be shining in the mls because of the mediocre the league is.

thats because if they win the nba title, there is no other basketball team in the world that can beat them in a 7 game series - hence, world champions. and shaq has 4 nba titles & 1 olympic gold.
Beckham got 3 in 1999. Factor in the great run of Man U in the 90s + his 1 title in Madrid - that makes you wrong, soccercell. anyways, beckham is highly revered in england. he is in the US right now
and he is still dominating the headlines over there. you can go to england and ask 50% of the population, most of them will say that he is one of the best ever for them. some may be right in saying
that he isn't in England's All-Time First XI, but you can never question the impact he has made in the game worldwide. Madrid paid $50M for him but he made them $600M (marketing-wise) for them in 3
years.

I don't discuss the marketing symbol he has become. He is probably the only person that could do that in the world. But saying he is one of the best in England's history that's pathetic. That is what
some medias in the US are trying to make Beckham look, but he is far away from being that great player people talk about. He is a good player but he will never go to history by what he showed in the
field. Only what goes outside the field, that is what will be remembered by Beckham.

Gonzilla'a right. Beckham has more titles than Shaq. Not to mention that competing in the World Cup is WAY better than in the NBA Finals. Football is a bigger and better sport than baketball,
although I like to watch the NBA, sometimes. But, Beckham goes to Madrid and makes them $600m? Ok, but ONLY 1 TITLE! Beckham is a popular guy. BUT, if he was a great player, Madrid would have more
than 1 title, so...I say, his best days were left back in Manchester. Facts are facts.

No no no They brought him - as octa55 mentioned - as a marketing symbol. Why not exploit his image? At the same time, why not show some americans that it is COOL to play soccer. Think about it - past
his prime? lots of cash? recent title? Yeah - bring in those unfaithful to the sport and let them be christened by one who is superior to them and someone they can look upon as one of their own.....

OK excuse me i forgot about his run with Man U in the 90's so i stand corrected but you cannot compare the greatness of basketball with the greatness of soccer. They are way too different. But it
makes me think about the atheletes that we have in Basketball and how would they do on pitch. Guys like Lebron, Iverson, Tony Parker, even Jordan in his prime. Suppose they would have been given
soccerballs instead of basketballs in their youth...I wonder if they would have made soccer more respectable in the US......and Becks just might do okay here.

Yes, SoccerCell brings up a good point. I mean, what if Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash stuck with football ("soccer")? I hope everyone here, knows that both Kobe and Steve started out as FOOTBALLERS, but
some reason turned to b-ball. Anyway, I think Becks will do good here in the States, but it WAY, WAY, WAY too much work for one man to handle. Beckham trying to get people to love "soccer", in this
country is like Reggie Bush trying to promote American football in England, by himself. TOO MUCH WORK FOR 1 MAN!!!!! He'll need a lot of help.
