PAPUA NEW GUINEA - OFC COMPLETES PRODUCTIVE WORKSHOP WITH PNGFA

Friday, 21 August 09, 12:11 AM

A week-long ‘Win in Oceania’ workshop has concluded in Port Moresby today with Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) confirming its commitment to invest in Papua New Guinea football activities over the next six years.

OFC President Reynald Temarii, who led the FIFA/OFC delegation, says discussions with the Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) were productive and thought-provoking.

“We listened intently to the PNGFA members and learned a lot about their needs and concerns. Now it is a matter of meeting those needs through the FIFA-funded Win in Oceania development programme.”

President Temarii made it clear at the beginning of the workshop that FIFA and OFC will only work with those of the 18 PNGFA member associations who took part in the proceedings. Discussions that followed included analysis of five key areas: competitions, administration, media and marketing, technical development and grassroots football. Delegates were split into groups according to the four government regions of Southern, Highlands, New Britain and Momasa plus a fifth group representing the National Soccer League (NSL) clubs.

Following a ‘SWOT’ analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats), the FIFA/OFC delegation announced a number of recommendations amounting to PGK 13.5 million over the next six years. These recommendations included computer and internet access for all member associations, extensive referee and coaching programmes, commencement of the ‘Just Play’ grassroots initiative in 2010 plus support for the NSL, O-League, Futsal and other competitions.

Following the workshop, the PNGFA Congress was held to approve statutory amendments including the sale of land and suspension of Port Moresby Soccer Association (PMSA).

PMSA, the largest football association in Papua New Guinea, is currently facing internal problems with a majority of clubs rebelling against President Fabien Chow. Despite the suspension, the OFC President said PMSA is welcome back into the Papua New Guinea football family at anytime once the issues are resolved.

President Temarii said the week-long seminar illustrated that an overwhelming majority of PNGFA members clearly support PNGFA President David Chung and his Executive Committee, just as FIFA and OFC continue to endorse the administration.

With this level of support, President Chung says he is looking forward to developing football in Papua New Guinea according to the roadmap established during this week’s workshop.

“We are grateful that FIFA and OFC are working hand in hand with PNGFA to plan, implement and sustain development programmes that reflect the needs of this very diverse, unique and often isolated part of the world.”

In closing, President Temarii paid tribute to the PNGFA administration led by David Brand and Dimirit Meling.

OFC DENOUNCE STATEMENT BY SETH DANIELS

Friday, 24 July 09, 12:47 AM

Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) has denounced a public notice this week by Seth Daniels calling for an Extra-Ordinary Congress of the Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) in Port Moresby next month.

The former PNGFA Senior Vice President, who is serving a three-year ban from football after he was found to have breached FIFA, OFC and PNGFA Statutes, has advertised that he intends to stage a Congress on 20 August – the same day that PNGFA President David Chung and his duly elected Executive Committee are scheduled to hold the official PNGFA Extra-Ordinary Congress.

OFC General Secretary Tai Nicholas says the press statement should be ignored by all PNGFA members.

“Daniels is currently suspended from all football activity and he has no right to call meetings of the PNGFA. Members should pay no attention to his claims of authority,” said Nicholas.

“Both FIFA and OFC continue to recognize PNGFA President David Chung and his rightfully elected Executive Committee as the controlling body for football in Papua New Guinea.”
Nicholas will travel to Papua New Guinea next month with a FIFA/OFC delegation that will include FIFA Vice President and OFC President Reynald Temarii and a number of senior management from OFC. The delegation will be involved in a week-long seminar with all 22 members of the PNGFA culminating in the PNGFA Extra-Ordinary Congress to be held on 20 August which Nicholas says will be an opportunity for the OFC President to address PNGFA membership.

“We are looking forward to meeting with PNGFA next month to discuss how best to develop the game in Papua New Guinea,” said Nicholas.

“This visit will also be an opportunity for OFC and FIFA to show further support for President David Chung and his rightfully elected Executive Committee.”

PAPUA NEW GUINEA - FRESH LOOK FOR PNG FOOTBALL FRAMEWORK

Monday, 06 July 09, 11:33 PM

A new action plan for football activities in Papua New Guinea has been drawn up by the Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) with help from Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Technical Director Jim Selby who recently visited Port Moresby.

Selby’s trip was part of an initial assessment leading into a full OFC delegation visit next month that will cement the calendar of activities and finalize long term development plans for PNGFA.

The technical expert, who met with PNGFA Development Officer Taku Niebo, OFC Consultant David Brand, PNGFA Committee Members, National Soccer League organisers and PNGFA Women's Football Standing Committee Members, said the discussions helped to detail a framework that will further grow football in Papua New Guinea.

“The purpose of this visit was to forward plan deliverable OFC technical activities for the remainder of the year, to review and update the current status of football in Papua New Guinea and to propose strategies for the delivery of technical programs beyond 2009.”

David Brand, who has been assisting in PNG since April this year, welcomed the assistance from Selby.

“We are grateful that the OFC Technical Department is working hand in hand with PNGFA to plan, implement and sustain tailor made programmes that reflect the needs of this very diverse, unique and often isolated part of the world,” said Brand.

He said the planning meetings were very productive and that a number of discussion points will now be presented to the PNGFA Executive Committee for approval.

One of the major points of discussion was the adoption and implementation of the OFC Junior Framework Policy which ensures a clear Jim Selbydevelopment pathway for youth footballers.

Grassroots football was addressed with plans now in place for OFC to facilitate ‘Fun Football’ and ‘Just Play’ activities and PNGFA to establish a grassroots steering committee.

Selby is also helping to coordinate a two-day National League Coaches and Franchise Workshop plus a Coaching Instructors Refresher Course and a number of women’s football initiatives.

OLYMPIC ENDORSEMENT FOR PAPUA NEW GUINEA, VANUATU

Wednesday, 20 May 09, 10:00 PM

Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) has today confirmed the nomination of Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu to represent Oceania football at the first ever Youth Olympic Games to be held in Singapore in August 2010.

OFC has made its selection proposal within FIFA parameters which state that Member Associations nominated must represent nations that ‘have never, or rarely, had the opportunity to participate in Olympic Games or World Cups.’

FIFA has also requested that Oceania nominate different countries for the men’s and women’s football tournaments.

Vanuatu has been selected for the men’s side following the establishment of the FIFA Goal Football Program in which players are identified at a young age and housed in an academy where they train together daily. As one of only six countries globally to be chosen for this pilot project, Vanuatu will have an opportunity to show FIFA the success of the program at the Youth Olympic Games next year.

Papua New Guinea have been selected for the women’s draw on the back of strong performances over the past couple of years including a gold medal at the XIII South Pacific Games Samoa 2007 – a competition that is part of the Olympic movement.

The final decision regarding OFC representation at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games will be made by FIFA at the 59th FIFA World Congress in Nassau, Bahamas, on 30 May.

If confirmed, OFC General Secretary Tai Nicholas says Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu will thrive on the opportunity to test themselves against the world’s best.

“Papua New Guinea have performed consistently in recent women’s tournaments but fallen short of toppling New Zealand for a place at a FIFA event,” says Nicholas.

“Now with a nomination for the Youth Olympic Games they can set their sights on competing at the next level and potentially earning international recognition.”

“Meanwhile Vanuatu is making huge strides in terms of youth development thanks to the newly introduced FIFA Goal Football Program so their selection is also well deserved,” says Nicholas.

The inaugural Youth Olympic Games will be held in Singapore from 14-26 August 2010 and is expected to involve 3,600 athletes aged 14 to 18 from 205 National Olympic Committees. Athletes will compete in 26 sports while also participating in cultural and education programs.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) created the new event in Guatemala in July 2007 with the aim of inspiring young people to participate in sport, play an active role in their communities and live by the Olympic values.

OFC BANS SETH DANIELS FROM FOOTBALL

Thursday, 14 May 09, 01:14 AM

The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Disciplinary Committee has handed down a three-year ban to former Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) Senior Vice President Seth Daniels after he was found to have breached FIFA, OFC and PNGFA Statutes.

Yesterday’s ruling will mean he can take no further part in any football activity for the next three years.

Daniels has been involved in a legal battle with the PNGFA since September 2007 when he took out court proceedings against the association challenging the decisions of the PNGFA Disciplinary Committee who had resolved that Daniels step aside from his position for allegedly bringing the game into disrepute.

At the time Daniels said he would accept the decision of the PNGFA Disciplinary Committee but when the ruling of the committee went against Daniels he decided to take the matter to the National Court of Justice at Lae.

Daniels’ court proceeding also challenged the validity of recent elections of the PNGFA held in July 2008 where incumbent PNGFA President David Chung was re-elected as President for another four-year term. Daniels was ousted as Senior Vice President.

The FIFA Statutes, Article 64 (formerly Article 62), clearly states that recourse to ordinary courts of law is prohibited unless specifically provided for in the FIFA Regulations. Relevant OFC Statutes (Article 39) and PNGFA Statutes (Article 51) also issue similar directives. Despite warnings from FIFA and OFC, Daniels continued to disobey these directives and as result was referred to the OFC Disciplinary Committee.

The OFC Disciplinary Committee yesterday found that in bringing these proceedings to the court he acted in clear violation of the statutes.

OFC General Secretary Tai Nicholas welcomes the committee’s decision of the three-year ban on Daniels.

“This  decision sends a clear message to any person involved in football within OFC and in particular Papua New Guinea that recourse to the courts is a fundamental breach of FIFA, OFC and PNGFA rules. It is important to respect the decisions of FIFA and OFC and if anyone ignores these directives they do so at their own peril.

"FIFA, OFC and PNGFA have in place formal structures where aggrieved parties can have issues addressed. The current dispute has been a setback for the PNGFA and OFC in terms of time and money and we believe it is time Seth Daniel steps aside for the benefit of football as a whole,” says Nicholas.

“Both FIFA and OFC continue to recognize PNGFA President David Chung and his duly elected Executive Committee as the controlling body for football in Papua New Guinea and we can now turn our attention back to what is most important – developing the game in Papua New Guinea.”

PAPUA NEW GUINEA NATIONAL SOCCER LEAGUE - HEKARI SOUTHS ROLL ON

Sunday, 18 January 09, 05:48 PM

PORT MORESBY – Their 2009 O-League hopes may be dangling precariously but Papua New Guinea’s National Soccer League (NSL) champions Hekari Souths continued their domestic domination with a 3-0 win over University.

Solomon Island striker Joachim Waroi helped himself to a brace and Papua New Guinea U-23 sensation Kema Jack chimed in with another as Hekari Souths sent out a clear message to their rivals.

Hekari Souths have enjoyed back-to-back NSL successes but have struggled to take that domestic form into the international arena in the O-League suffering a 2-1 loss to Koloale at Lawson Tama Stadium in December in front of 15,000 fans.

The match with Fijian club Ba ended in another defeat despite a crowd of nearly 8,000 turning out to cheer the Patrick Miniti-coached Hekari Souths.

There were no such disappointments at the weekend for Hekari Souths – University FC squandered a raft of gilt-edged chances in the process.

The normally reliable Neil Hans and Tau Winnie were wayward in front of goal but Waroi – a star for Solomon Islands international team – was in sharp form following the Christmas break and made no such errors in front of goal.
OFC Player of the Year candidate David Muta was in fine form for Hekari Souths and had a hand in all Hekari Souths goals.

University FC trail Hekari Souths in the race for the title but still remain one of the clubs most likely to pose a realistic threat to the champions title defence.

Meanwhile, in Lae, CMSS Tigers Rapatona handed Welgris Highlanders a 2-1 defeat. Raymond Gunemba – scorer of a sensational goal for Papua New Guinea U-23 against New Zealand U-23 last year – bagged one and Nathan Vincent the other, as Rapatona scored a much needed win. Andrew Apo has earlier given Welgris a shock 1-0 lead.

Morobe defeated Eastern Star 3-0 in the NSL’s final fixture of the round.

PNGFA NSL Results

Saturday 18 January 2009

Hekari Souths 3 (Joachim Waroi 2, Kema Jack), University FC 0

Welgris Highlanders (Andrew Apo), CMSS Tigers Rapatona 2 (Raymond Gunemba, Nathan Vincent)

Morobe 3, Eastern Star 0

OFC WOMEN'S PLAYER OF THE YEAR - FIJI HAIL KURIKABA AND RATU NOMINATION

Thursday, 08 January 09, 07:36 PM

SUVA - Fiji Women’s football representatives Asena Ratu and Adiela Kurikaba have been nominated for the first ever Oceania Women Footballer of the Year award which will be given by the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) in April.

The duo who were key players of the Fiji Women’s side that won bronze at the Pacific Games in Samoa last year are among the 15 ladies from the Oceania region that have been short listed for the inaugural award.

Ratu, 28 is an inspirational leader and midfielder who represents Tavua on the domestic scene has been a regular in the national colors since 2002 while Kurikaba who hails from champion soccer district Ba and is 22 years old first entered the sport of football as a 15 year old and has since been one of the top strikers in the country.

Fiji Women’s Football director Susan Wise was elated with the news of the nomination of the two players and said this sort of openings encouraged and raised more awareness of the sport in the country.

“This indeed is great news to women’s football in Fiji as the nomination of the two girls has reflected our commitment and urge of developing the sport here, she said.

“It’s a great achievement for us which shows we are moving in the right direction and in years to come, we can excel even further up the ladder.

“Both the girls deserve to be nominated as they have proven their worth on both the domestic and the international scene and can be matched against the world’s best.

“Asena has been around since early 2000s and one of the senior members of our national team and is a fantastic leader while Adiela has huge potential and is unarguably one of the best strikers not only in the country but also in the region.

“Competition will be tough for the award as the other nominees also are very good and carry lots of experience but we are confident of our chances and keep our fingers crossed” added Wise.

Apart from the two, Fiji football sensation Roy Krishna has also been nominated for the top honors in the Men’s category.

The 21 year old Siberia lad is one of Fiji’s finest and most marketable talent having already featured at the Club World Cup in Japan with New Zealand football champs Waitakere United last month.

The nominees in the Women’s category are as follows:

Filiga Kerisiano (American Samoa), Adiela Kurikaba (Fiji), Asena Reba Ratu (Fiji), Daisy Winas (PNG), Lydia Banabas (PNG), Majorie Pouye (New Caledonia), Haley Moorwood (New Zealand), Elodie Tein Poawi (New Caledonia), Rosie White (New Zealand), Ali Riley (New Zealand), Annalie Longo (New Zealand), Kirsty Yallop (New Zealand), Laydah Samani (Solomon Islands), Mele Likiliki (Tonga) and Mimosa Marmouyet (Tahiti).

OFC PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2008 - TWENTY FIVE PLAYERS NOMINATED

Sunday, 04 January 09, 07:01 PM

Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) is pleased to announce the nominees for OFC Player of the Year Awards 2008. Twenty five players from around the Oceania region have made shortlists in both men’s and women’s categories.

It is the first time in the confederation’s history that an OFC Player of the Year Award will be made in the category of women’s football with fifteen players on the shortlist.

Ten players have made the shortlist in the Men’s category with few surprises that most nominees play their trade in Europe and Asia. Fifteen players were nominated in the Women’s category.

The voting system used to determine the winners of each category will be similar to the one used in Europe to determine the winner of the Ballon D’Or.

The jury is comprised by members of the OFC Executive Committee, Member Association Presidents, General Secretaries, as well as national team coaches and technical directors of all OFC Member Associations.

OFC General Secretary Tai Nicholas said nominees will be judged based on their performances from the middle of July 2007 to the final day of last year to allow the performances of players based in the Oceania region to be taken into consideration.

“Football is played intermittently within the region because of the geographic spread and isolation and it presents difficulties if you are too reliant on the calendar.

There were some very notable individual performances at the XIII South Pacific Games that deserve acknowledgement,” Nicholas said.
The OFC Player of the Year Award has been in hiatus until last year when it was announced Marama Vahirua (2005), Ryan Nelsen (2006) and Shane Smeltz (2007) had been awarded the honour retrospectively.

“It is great for the promotion of football in the region to acknowledge our achievers. It helps establish a legacy and gives youngsters heroes to aspire too.

We have a great list of nominees in both categories and there is a good spread of representation of most of our member associations.

There is a strong presence of players based in professional leagues around the world including Australia, England, France and Scotland which is encouraging.

I am delighted there is a women’s category particularly after the quality of football we witnessed at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup hosted by New Zealand,” OFC General Secretary Tai Nicholas added.

Wynton Rufer and Harry Kewell have won the award three times each.

Christian Karembeu and Robbie Slater have won the award twice.

Jurors have until 21 March 2009 to submit their votes.
The winners of each award will be announced officially in April 2009.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA - DAVANI SIGNS FOR AUSTRALIAN CLUB

Sunday, 04 January 09, 06:45 PM

BRISBANE - Papua New Guinea international striker Reginald Davani has signed for Australian outfit Logan United. The 28 year old completed his move from Coburg United in Victoria to Logan United last month.

Davani has 19 caps for his country in which he has scored an incredible 15 goals (including seven strikes in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Germany 2006).  Davani spent last season in Victoria with Coburg United FC and in the Solomon Islands with KOSSA FC where he played in the 2008 O-League Final against Waitakere United.

'That was a pretty amazing experience' said Davani. 'There were 20,000 people at the Solomon’s match with maybe another 5,000 locked out!'. Davani was an integral part of KOSSA FC's run to the final as the Solomon Islands champions eliminated Ba and Tafea FC en route to the final.

Before that were spells at Auckland City FC, (where he won 2 NZFC titles and an OFC Club Championship title) and North Shore United in New Zealand as well as time with University Inter in Papua New Guinea where he helped lift the amateur side to a win over a semi-professional side to claim the National championship.

He was a finalist in the 2005 Papua New Guinea Sportsman of the Year and the 2004 Oceania Player of the Year awards. He is also a dual International, having represented Australia at Futsal.

Davani has been a crowd favourite wherever he has played and the frontman is keen for that relationship to continue with Logan United fans.

Davani will play in front of recent signing and long time friend, Fijian International Raj Oshen. He also joins other recent signings Yochi Okada from Redlands and last year’s LUFC ‘Players Player of the Year’ Seb Usai in a re-vamped and impressive LUFC line up.

2008/09 PAPUA NEW GUINEA NATIONAL SOCCER LEAGUE - HEKARI STAY TOP

Sunday, 21 December 08, 05:48 PM

PORT MORESBY – Defending PNGFA National Soccer League (NSL) Telikom Cup champions Hekari Souths United washed away memories of last week’s 2009 O-League defeat against Fiji’s Ba with a 6-2 thrashing of MACL Nabasa United.

Nabasa shocked Hekari Souths with two quick goals in the opening minutes of the match. It was a precious lead for the team from Madang Province. Nabasa held that 2-0 lead at halftime with Hekari Souths no doubt stunned by the prospect of what seemed an unlikely scenario before kick-off.

They needn’t have been too concerned. The reigning NSL Telikom Cup champions proved too strong and experienced for a Nabasa outfit that relied heavily on team spirit and enthusiasm.

Hekari Souths scored six second-half goals to silence any Nabasa resistance and claim a morale-boosting win that keeps the champions in the hunt for the title.

In the Lae derby, University FC defeated Morobe 1-0 thanks to a Neil Hans pile driver. Hans’s winner was candidate for NSL Telikom Cup goal of the round after the nuggety attacker broke down Morobe’s left before launching a deceptive right foot drive past the goalkeeper from wide on the touchline.

The curved and dipped into the top left hand corner to spark scenes of celebration among University FC supporters.

Highlanders defeated Sepik 2-1 in a match where all the goals came in the final minutes. Sepik looked to have grabbed all the points with a late goal but Highlanders struck twice in injury time to snatch victory.

Eastern Stars and Rapatona played out a drab 0-0 draw with both clubs remaining in mid-table.

PNGFA NSL Telikom Cup

Standings – 20.12.2008

Hekari Souths United 15 points

University FC  14 points

Highlanders  11 points

Rapatona  7 points

Sepik   6 points

Nabasa   1 point

2009 O-LEAGUE - FIELD LOOKS FOR PERFECT END TO 2008

Wednesday, 10 December 08, 04:58 PM

AUCKLAND – Port Vila Sharks, Hekari Souths United FC, Auckland City and Ba are all hoping for the perfect end to the year – with their first three points of the 2009 O-League campaign - when Match Day Three of the competition kicks off on Saturday.

Auckland will travel to Vanuatu to take on Port Vila at Municipal Stadium in Group A while Hekari will host Fijian champions Ba in their first ever home O-League match at Port Moresby Rugby League Stadium in Group B.

Auckland will be without former Coach Colin Tuaa who handed in his resignation last weekend prior to their 3-1 win over Hawkes Bay United in the New Zealand Football Championship.  Paul Posa will take the reins of the club who will be looking to improve on their opening day 2-2 draw with Waitakere United.

Port Vila will hope to make the most of their home field advantage and bounce back from their 3-0 defeat to Waitakere in Match Day Two. Vanuatu internationals Fedy Vava and Francois Sakama will re-join the team after being in Auckland for the past week with the Oceania All Star side which faced the LA Galaxy.

In Group B Hekari will be expecting a large supportive crowd to welcome in the first ever O-League game to be played in Papua New Guinea.

Coach Patrick Mniti will be looking for a more complete performance from his side who led Koloale in their opening match before conceding three late goals to lose their advantage.

Ba Coach Yogendra Dutt was disappointed with his sides finishing in front of goal in their opening round 0-0 draw with Koloale FC and will look to Fijian international Osea Vakatalesau to lead the line by example on Saturday.

A win for Ba would put them first equal with Koloale on top of Group B.

Oceaniafootball.com will be providing live text updates of both matches.

OCEANIA ALL STARS - TELEVISION COVERAGE (OCEANIA)

Thursday, 04 December 08, 11:11 PM

AUCKLAND - Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), Auckland Regional Council (ARC), Sky Television New Zealand (Prime Television), Fiji TV and Sky Pacific and all "Beautiful Game" associated partners are pleased to announce the live broadcast details of Oceania All Stars vs. LA Galaxy.

Thirteen broadcasters from around the region will take live coverage of this groundbreaking event from Mount Smart Stadium, Penrose, Auckland, as a squad of players from around Oceania plus invited guest players from Australia and Netherlands take on the stars from Major League Soccer (MLS) to help raise funds for Kids Can, John Walker Field of Dreams and promote OFC Football for Life.

OFC General Secretary Tai Nicholas said the match would create television and football history around the Oceania region.

"The fact we have thirteen of our regional broadcasters taking this match live is historic in itself. The Karembeu Jubilee match in Noumea was distributed delayed.

We at OFC are delighted to bring our regions footballers together like this, but even happier the people in the countries will be able to see them alongside the LA Galaxy, Christian Karembeu, Mark Bosnich and Edgar Davids.," Nicholas said.

The broadcast will reach a potential audience of just over 6 million people.

OFC Media and Communications Officer Gordon Glen Watson said New Caledonia had the option of taking a tape of the match delayed.

"At this stage the technology to bring the match live to New Caledonia is not in place. However, Fiji TV and RFO are in dialogue about solving this problem as a result of this event - that is a strong indication of the power and attraction of football in our region," Watson said.

Live internet audio broadcast of this match is available at www.radiosport.co.nz

OCEANIA ALL STARS MIX WITH KIDS

Thursday, 04 December 08, 09:47 PM

AUCKLAND – Thousands of screaming school children filled Mt Smart Stadium today to train with and watch the Oceania All stars and LA Galaxy.

It was the opportunity of a lifetime for many young fans who had the opportunity to mix and mingle with stars like David Beckham, Christian Karembeu, Edgar Davids and Mark Bosnich.

The Galaxy entered the stadium first and the kids erupted into screams of delight when they caught their first glimpse of Beckham.  After a training session which lasted a little over an hour it was the All stars turn and Coach Jim Selby invited 30 lucky young schoolchildren to join in some impromptu games and drills.

The All Stars then took time to sign autographs for their thousands of adoring fans, before walking them back to their bus.

Fijian star Esala Masi said the experience was one he will never forget and said his excitement level for the game has risen to a new level.

“It was great to mix with the kids and I’m so excited for the game tomorrow. I’m really hoping we can fill this stadium tomorrow. I think we will.”

The Oceania team will train tonight at Mt Smart Stadium in preparation for their game tomorrow night.

BECKHAM MEETS OCEANIA ALL STARS AT PRESS CONFERENCE

Thursday, 04 December 08, 12:54 AM

The Captain, Coach and star players of both the LA Galaxy and Oceania All stars held a joint press conference in Auckland today to talk about the upcoming exhibition match at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday night.

David Beckham was joined by Coach Bruce Arena and midfielder Eddie Lewis – representing LA, while Christian Karembeu, Coach Jim Selby and defender Ivan Vicelich spoke on behalf of OFC.

Beckham said he is looking forward to the match, and is enjoying his second visit to New Zealand.

"I hope to play well in the match, perform well in the match," said Beckham.

"We're obviously happy and privileged to be here, knowing it's a beautiful country and everyone treats us so well," he said.

Selby said that while many of the Oceania side may be unknown to the New Zealand public, they are role models and heroes in their respective communities.

Oceania All Stars Head Coach Jim Selby

“It gives the Oceania community and people the opportunity to gain some great experiences. Oceania has produced a lot of individually skilful players with flair and creativity but they haven’t been given the opportunity to pit those skills against some world class players and teams. This is that opportunity.

“They are also very humble players. They understand that all the proceeds from the game will go to some charities, including Kids Can and John Walker field of dreams

“It’s not going to be an easy game. With the different languages they’ve got between them we have a number of interpreters within our team which is really unique. The players know it’s not easy but regardless of what the score line might be they wouldn’t miss it for the world.

“This is part of a long term plan for Oceania that has been instigated by the OFC President and General Secretary to develop football in the region.”

For the LA Galaxy, Arena said it was about giving their young players some exposure and a chance to prove themselves as the Galaxy prepares for the 2009 season in the US.

“This game is critical for our young players and they’ll be judged harshly if they don’t fair well, so there should be some motivation for these players.

“Secondly, being here to help promote the game in Oceania is very important. I remember 20 years ago in the United States, our attempts to start building the game, and build our national team just like New Zealand is attempting to do now.

Press Conference at the WestIn on Lighter Quay in Auckland's Viaduct Harbour

Auckland City Captain and former All white Ivan Vicelich said he is excited for the young players in the squad and the Auckland public.

“It’s a big game for the community and the Oceania region and I encourage the Auckland public to come out and see a great spectacle.

Oceania ambassador Christian Karembeu is looking forward to mixing it with the stars and testing the talent in OFC.

“We are in the first stage and maybe in ten years we will have some presence on the world stage. It is also a great step for us to show that we can do something with big stars.”

OCEANIA ALL STARS - MEET THE TEAM

Tuesday, 02 December 08, 02:33 PM

The Oceania All Stars are set to kick off against David Beckham and the LA Galaxy on Saturday infront of thousands of fans at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland.

The squad consists of 20 players from nine different countries and includes superstars Christian Karembeu, Mark Bosnich and Edgar Davids.

Oceaniafootball.com provides you with a look at the very first Oceania All Star team.

Captain Christian Karembeu

New Caledonian-born Christian Karembeu is an Oceania Football Confederation ambassador and the region’s most decorated footballer. Karembeu amassed 53 caps for France in his career including winning the FIFA World Cup with France in 1998. Karembeu won the UEFA Champions League twice with Spanish giants Real Madrid as well as league titles in Greece and the French Cup with Nantes in 1995. Karembeu was OFC Player of the Year in 1995 and 1998 and a member of the France squad that won the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2001 and the UEFA European Championships in 2000.

An advocate for Pacific Islands talent, Karembeu would like nothing more than for the region’s talented youth to follow in his footsteps.

Tahitian international Raimana Lee Fung Kuee

Raimana Lee Fung Kuee is a Tahiti international who plays for AS Dragon in the French-

Polynesian Championnat D1. The versatile playmaker has represented Tahiti in various forms of football including two appearances at the OFC Beach Soccer Championship in 2006 and 2007.

Lee Fung Kuee was an impressive performer for Tahiti during its XIII South Pacific Games – Samoa 2007 campaign turning in some eye-catching performances in a struggling team. The mercurial skills of Lee Fung Kuee helped guide AS Pirae to a runners-up finish during the 2006 OFC Club Championship during a 3-1 loss to Auckland City FC. Lee Fung Kuee is currently one of the leading goalscorers in the early weeks of the 2008/09 Championnat D1.

Solomon Island international Alick Maemae

Firebrand midfi eld maestro Alick Maemae has the capacity to turn a match on its head with a flash of brilliance.

Maemae has mesmerized Kiwi football fans with his quick feet and silky skills with Youngheart Manawatu and took those abilities onto the international stage with the Solomon Islands national team.

The crafty wide-player tormented Australia in their FIFA World Cup qualifi er exchanges in 2005 and 2006 as the underdogs drew 2-2 in Adelaide with their illustrious opponents.

Maemae formed a formidable strike partnership with fellow Solomon Island striker Benjamin Totori at both domestic and international level and will be one to watch in December. Has since returned to the NZFC with Auckland City FC.

Solomon Island international Henry Fa'arodo

The mercurial Henry Faarodo is a Solomon Island midfielder with a wealth of experience in Australia and New Zealand. Burst onto the scene at Nelson Boys College and capped a remarkable rise to prominence in the Australian National Soccer League (NSL) with the Melbourne Knights.

Faarodo played for Perth Glory in the inaugural A-League season and in recent years has set the NZFC alight with some stunning performances for Canterbury United and Auckland City FC. Fa’arodo is a quick, skilful striker who performed with distinction at the XIII South Pacific Games - Samoa 2007 and most recently for Altona Magic FC in the Victorian Premier League. Returned home to turn out for Koloale FC in the 2009 OLeague and DJ League.

Papua New Guinea international David Muta

David Muta is the rising star of Papua New Guinea football after a stunning turn for the U-23 international team at the OFC Men’s Olympic Football Tournament in Fiji earlier this year.

Muta’s gifted passing game won plaudits from observers as Papua New Guinea surprised many by turning in their best international performance in recent times including a 7-2 win over Vanuatu.

The amiable and charismatic midfield ace subsequently earned a move to Queensland with Sunshine Coast FC with national team coach George Cowie.

Muta has returned to Papua New Guinea with PNGFA National Soccer League (NSL) champions Hekari Souths for the 2009 OLeague season.

New Zealand international Steven Old

Steven Old made his breakthrough into the senior ranks as a raw teenager at Manawatu AFC under coach Colin Tuaa and made a meteoric rise to full international status and earned a trial with Italian Serie A club Parma.

The 22 year old has since captained New Zealand at U-17, U-20 and U-23 level, and has played against the likes of Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Roberto Carlos. Old has played for both the Newcastle Jets and the Wellington Phoenix in the Australian A-League and recently represented New Zealand at the 2008 Beijing Olympic games.

Vanuatu international Francois Sakama

Francois Sakama earned a reputation as a star in the making at the OFC U-20 Championship in 2007 and continued that rise with the Vanuatu national team as they clinched bronze at the XIII South Pacific Games - Samoa 2007.

It was Sakama’s thunderous volley against rivals Solomon Islands that announced his arrival on the senior international stage and helped earn a two week trial with Israeli professional club Maccabi Netanya.

Sakama followed that up with a well-taken goal against New Zealand during a 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Oceanian Qualifier in Wellington. Currently on the books of Vanuatu club champions Tafea FC.

Solomon Island international Nelson Sale

Nelson Sale is a Solomon Island international defender who captained his country at the recent OFC Olympic Football tournament in Fiji and starred during the XIII South Pacifi c Games — Samoa 2007. Sale was a star performer for the Solomon Islands team that drew 2-2 with Australia in the 2004 OFC Nations Cup and lost 1-2 in the rematch in Honiara against such performers as Tim Cahill and Brett Emerton.

Sale has recently signed for Auckland City FC in the New Zealand Football Championship and will line up alongside his international team mate Alick Maemae.

New Zealand international Jarrod Smith

Jarrod Smith is a New Zealand International who currently plays for Toronto FC in the MLS. Smith represented New Zealand at U-20 and U-23 level before gaining his first full international cap against Malaysia in 2006.

Smith spent four years at West Virginia University in the USA, and was selected by Toronto FC with the first pick of the supplemental draft.

Smith signed for Toronto in March 2008 and scored his team’s second goal on route to a 3-2 victory over the LA Galaxy.

New Zealand international Jacob Spoonley

Jacob Spoonley is a New Zealand U-23 international goalkeeper rated as one of his countries bright young talents.

Spoonley represented New Zealand at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada where he won admiration for his starring performances against Gambia, Portugal and Mexico. Spoonley stepped up a level at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Men’s Football Tournament with appearances against Brazil, China and Belgium. Spoonley is the top young goalkeeper in New Zealand and has recently transferred from the Wellington Phoenix to Auckland City FC for the upcoming NZFC season.

Vanuatu international Fedy Vava

Fedy Vava is a Vanuatu international who currently plays for Tafea FC. The tall defender has been the cornerstone of the Vanuatu rearguard since 2001 and was an integral part of the squad that defeated New Zealand 4-2 in World Cup qualifying in 2004.

Fedy Vava shares the national team captaincy with Tafea FC team-mate Moise Poida who starred for the Karembeu XI against France ‘98 in Noumea in May. Vava has helped guide Tafea FC to their record breaking 14 Port Vila League titles in a row sequence and has extensive international experience in the OFC O-League and OFC Club Championship.

Vava is also a Vanuatu Futsal international and recently competed at the OFC Futsal World Cup Qualifying tournament in Fiji in June.

New Zealand international Ivan Vicelich

Ivan Vicelich is a recently retired All White who has experience of professional football in Holland, Australia and New Zealand with Roda JC, RKC Waalwijk, Football Kingz, Waitakere City and Central United.

Vicelich amassed 63 caps over 13 years for New Zealand and has recently returned home to play for Auckland City in the NZFC. The defender helped guide New Zealand to two memorable wins over Australia in the OFC Nations Cup in 1998 and 2002 and was recognised for his efforts when he was named the New Zealand footballer of the year.

Vicelich has represented New Zealand at two FIFA Confederations Cup tournaments in 1999 and2003. He also scored a crucial goal for New Zealand during a 2-0 win over Fiji in the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Oceanian Qualifier in Lautoka last year.

Dutch International Edgar Davids

Edgar Davids is a Dutch international with 74 caps for the Netherlands and was one of the players chosen by Pelé to be featured in the FIFA 100, a compilation of the world’s greatest living footballers.

He has played for Ajax Amsterdam, AC Milan, Juventus FC, FC Barcelona, Internazionale Milano (Inter Milan), Tottenham Hotspur and again for Ajax.

Davids distinctive look has made him both popular with fans and recognisable on the world stage.  He suffers from glaucoma, which requires him to wear protective goggles during football, together with dreadlocked hair, this has become Davids’ trademark look.

Vanuatu International Suele Soromon

Seule Soromon is a dynamic Vanuatu striker who was the top scorer at the XIII South Pacific Games – Samoa 2007. He has made an instant impact in this year’s NZFC with Hawkes Bay United and scored a goal against the Wellington Phoenix in a game earlier this year.

Fijian international Esala Masi

Esala Masi is a Fijian international who currently plays for Altona Magic in the Victorian Premier League in Australia.

Masi is widely regarded as the best Fijian Football of all time and has played professionally in Australia for over 10 years. Masi made his debut for the Fiji National football team in 1997 and has since gone on to win over 30 caps for the national team – captaining them on several occasions.

New Zealand international Cole Peverley

Cole Peverley is a central midfielder who recently won his first All White Cap after a string of  impressive performances with the New Zealand U-23 side at the Olympics in Beijing.

His work rate, vision and range of passing has made him one of the top young players in the country and has shone in this year’s NZFC for Hawkes Bay United.

OCEANIA ALL STARS FALL TO WAITAKERE

Monday, 01 December 08, 11:50 PM

AUCKLAND -  The Oceania All Stars suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of O-League champions Waitakere United today after playing their second game in two days.

Neil Sykes and Jason Rowley provided the two second half goals for Waitakere – taking advantage of some tired legs from the All Star side.

The game started at a quick pace with both sides testing their opponents out wide – but as the game wore on the effects of the 2-1 win over Auckland City XI the night before begun to take effect on the Oceania XI.

The match at North Harbour Stadium attracted some high profile spectators with Oceania captain Christian Karembeu and ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich gracing the touchline, while meeting their team mates for the first time.

The game itself was one of few chances. Henry Fa'arodo and Jarrod Smith always looked dangerous for the Oceania XI with some neat interchanges out wide while Seule Soromon provided a constant threat up front with his pace.

Waitakere took the lead early in the second half when Neil Sykes smashed home the rebound from a Chris Bale free kick into the top corner of Jacob Spoonley’s goal.

Their second goal came from a Jake Butler corner with Jason Rowley rising highest at the far post to crash home a header.

There was some slick interplay through the Oceania midfield with David Muta and Alick Maemae providing some deft touches and Fedy Vava looked composed at centre back.

The All Stars will now take a rest day to recover from their gruelling schedule and take a chance to get acquainted with Bosnich and Karembeu.

Dutch international Edgar Davids will join the squad on Thursday morning.

OCEANIA ALL STARS - PEVERLEY, SOROMON AND MASI JOIN SQUAD

Monday, 01 December 08, 05:48 PM

AUCKLAND - Oceania All Stars have added three more players to its core squad for this weekend’s “Beautiful Game” match with LA Galaxy.

New Zealand Olympian Cole Peverley, Vanuatu forward Suele Soromon and Fiji international striker Esala Masi have been drafted into the core squad after the withdrawal of Malakai Tiwa, Peni Finau and Osea Vakatalesau.

Peverley made a big impact for the New Zealand U-20 Men’s team at the FIFA U-20 Men’s World Cup – Canada 2007 last year and is currently with New Zealand Football Championship (NZFC) franchise Hawkes Bay United.

Esala Masi played professional football in the Australian National Soccer League (NSL) with Wollongong Wolves and Newcastle Jets for nearly ten years and won one NSL league title and the OFC Club Championship in 2000.

Masi was named in the Karembeu Jubilee XI in May but withdrew due to a family bereavement at the last moment.

“I am delighted to be selected by Oceania All Stars after my withdrawal last time. It is a great opportunity to play alongside so many talented players from the Pacific and around the world. I am honoured to represent Fiji and Oceania,” Masi said.

Hawkes Bay United and Vanuatu striker Suele Soromon has also joined the squad after a string of impressive performances in the NZFC and international level. Soromon won the Silver Shoe award at the XIII South Pacific Games after he scored nine goals for Vanuatu as part of its 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa qualifying campaign.

Coach Jim Selby said the squad would adapt to the change and the inclusion of Karembeu and Bosnich in today’s friendly with Waitakere United would be a good morale booster ahead of Saturday.

“The squad will be strengthened with Esala Masi and Cole Peverley and I am sure the presence of Christian Karembeu and Mark Bosnich will lift everybody,” Selby said.

Oceania All Stars play Waitakere United at North Harbour Stadium today kick-off at 15h15.
Oceania All Stars will be available for media comment from 14h00 and also at the conclusion of today’s match.

For further information please contact Gordon Glen Watson at gordon@oceaniafootball.com or on 021-994-520.
