Anelka doubt for Les Bleus (france)

Thursday, 09 October 08, 01:13 PM

Nicolas Anelka is an injury doubt for France's World Cup qualifier against Romania on Saturday due to muscular problems. The Chelsea striker opened the scoring against Aston Villa at the weekend before being forced out of the action after a recurrence of the muscle spasms which forced him to miss Friday's training. Blues boss Luiz Felipe Scolari believes Anelka may not be fit enough for Raymond Domenech for their qualifier, although he feels he may be fit for their friendly against Tunisia on a week on Wednesday. "I don't know if he will play in national team for France or not because he feels a little pain in his leg and maybe for the first game it'll be difficult for him to play," the Brazilian tactician told France Football. "But he can stay in the France squad. He needs two, maybe three days rest and then maybe play the second game." Luck and determination Meanwhile, injury-hit Romania are counting on luck and determination to beat France, according to coach Victor Piturca. Piturca is without half of the team's key players due to injury, although he does welcome Cristian Chivu and Adrian Mutu back to the fold. Romania were stunned 3-0 at home by Lithuania and struggled to beat Faroes Islands 1-0 away in their first two games. They are fifth in the table on three points behind Serbia, Austria and France on goal difference. Lithuania top the group on six points. Piturca has been forced to pick an inexperienced squad and has called up uncapped central defender Valerica Gaman, but he is backing his young stars to impress. "Gaman, (goalkeeper Costel) Pantilimon and (striker Bogdan) Stancu are all young, genuine talents and they could be the future of a new Romania national team," Piturca said.

Scolari hails important win

Thursday, 09 October 08, 01:09 PM

Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari hailed his side's display after they outplayed Aston Villa in a comprehensive 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge which keeps them top of the league.

The Blues extended their undefeated home record to 86 games thanks to first-half strikes from Joe Cole and Nicolas Anelka.

But it could have been more as Chelsea dominated in the first-half, with Scolari hailing his side's play, particularly in the first 45 minutes.

He believed it was his side's best performance of the season given several players were out and he also thought it was important to notch up three points to keep them top of the league.

"It's a big game - it is three points," he told Sky Sports, adding he wants his team to win more games at home.

"We need to win more games at home, because we have played four games at home and won only won two," he said, adding he thought too many home draws had cost the Blues last season.

Final result

"There were many, many draws at home and the final result - two points behind Manchester.

"This is important."

Joe Cole and Nicola Anelka went off with injuries during the game but Scolari believes the pair will soon recover and be able to play in their international teams' forthcoming fixtures.

The former Portugal boss is now looking forward to having three days off with his family during the international break.

"These three days is rest for all Chelsea - not only for me - for all Chelsea, I don't want to talk about football," he said.

Cech shocked by poor Villa

Thursday, 09 October 08, 01:08 PM

Petr Cech has admitted that Chelsea were shocked by how easily they beat Aston Villa on Sunday. The Czech goalkeeper was largely untroubled as the Premier League leaders cruised to a 2-0 success over Villa, who many thought could bring to an end Chelsea's amazing four-and-half-year unbeaten run at Stamford Bridge. Cech revealed that Chelsea were expecting a tough test against high-flying Villa, who had previously enjoyed a good record against the Blues, but the anticipated threat never emerged. "We played out a great game, from the first minute there was only one team on the pitch," Cech told his own website. "Unambiguously, we deserved to win and could have scored even more goals. "With regards to the previous encounters with Aston Villa, we expected a very difficult game. "Eventually, it was not that difficult, also because we played really well." Cole hope Cech also believes the foot injury to team-mate Joe Cole, who misses England's World Cup qualifiers with Kazakhstan and Belarus, is not too serious. "We believe that it will not be a serious injury and that he will recover over the international break," Cech added. Cech is linking up with the Czech national squad ahead of their qualifiers against Slovenia and Poland and will travel to Prague on Monday.

Mutu refusing to pay fine

Thursday, 09 October 08, 01:06 PM

Fiorentina striker Adrian Mutu has no intention of paying the heavy fine handed down to him by Fifa. The Romania international has been ordered to pay 17million euros (£13.4m) to former employers Chelsea as a result of a cancelled contract at Stamford Bridge. The Blues terminated Mutu's deal in October 2004 following a failed drugs test and an admission by the player that he had taken cocaine during his time at the club. He was subsequently banned from action for seven months, but immediately signed for Serie A giants Juventus upon the conclusion of that punishment. The 29-year-old then moved on to Fiorentina in 2006, rediscovering his best form with the Viola. Support He insists that he will not let the fine hanging over his head affect his game and steadfastly refuses to meet the demands of Fifa. "What has happened to me is not right and I will fight for my rights," he said. "It is pleasing to have the support of the Association of Romanian Players and the intentional syndicate for professional players (FIFPro). "I'm proud to see that we are all thinking the same thing."

Mikel granted leave by Nigeria

Thursday, 09 October 08, 12:58 PM

Nigeria have given John Obi Mikel permission to skip their World Cup qualifier against Sierra Leone on Saturday.

Chelsea had asked for the midfielder to be left out of action in order to allow him to work on his fitness and put himself in contention for the Blues' next Premier League fixture at Middlesbrough on 18th October.

Nigerian team official Emmanuel Attah confirmed Mikel had been excused from the squad for this weekend's match.

"The Nigeria Football Federation and Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari have agreed that Mikel skip this game so as to concentrate fully on his club career," he said.

"We agreed to this because we want the player to fully establish himself at the club while also improving the working relationship between us and the overseas clubs of our players."

Dynamo Kiev midfielder Ayila Yussuf and Portsmouth winger John Utaka will also miss the Sierra Leone clash through injury, with Yussuf replaced in the squad by Femi Ajilore.

Nigeria have already qualified for the next round of qualifying for both the 2010 World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola after taking maximum points from their five games so far.
