Nigeria have given John Obi Mikel permission to skip their World Cup qualifier against Sierra Leone on Saturday.
Chelsea had asked for the midfielder to be left out of action in order to allow him to work on his fitness and put himself in contention for the Blues' next Premier League fixture at Middlesbrough on 18th October.
Nigerian team official Emmanuel Attah confirmed Mikel had been excused from the squad for this weekend's match.
"The Nigeria Football Federation and Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari have agreed that Mikel skip this game so as to concentrate fully on his club career," he said.
"We agreed to this because we want the player to fully establish himself at the club while also improving the working relationship between us and the overseas clubs of our players."
Dynamo Kiev midfielder Ayila Yussuf and Portsmouth winger John Utaka will also miss the Sierra Leone clash through injury, with Yussuf replaced in the squad by Femi Ajilore.
Nigeria have already qualified for the next round of qualifying for both the 2010 World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola after taking maximum points from their five games so far.

England midfielder Frank Lampard believes Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has helped to rejuvenate his career.
Lampard was strongly linked with the Stamford Bridge exit door this year, but resisted the lure of Inter Milan to sign a new contract in West London.
And having opted to stay in the Premier League, Lampard has produced a consistent start to the season - scoring five goals and impressing as England recorded a 4-1 World Cup qualifying victory over Croatia in September.
Lampard was criticised for under-performing in the England squad which failed to qualify for Euro 2008 but, after a positive performance in Zagreb, the 30-year-old is again expected to start against Kazakhstan at Wembley on Saturday.
And Lampard has thanked his Chelsea boss, Scolari, for reinvigorating his form, saying: "The new manager has been a breath of fresh air for the club.
"I just feel very focused and confident. When I feel like that I feel I can improve more. We are playing good football and it's enjoyable to play.
"I am playing some good stuff myself, but it is really helped being surrounded by players who are all moving the ball quickly and we are starting to dominate games.
"I'm big enough to say that for the last couple of years I haven't done as well as I should have done for England - and after Croatia this is a start for me to kick on again and show the sort of form I feel I can."
And Lampard admits that the speculation surrounding his future, which rumbled on for the majority of last season, had an impact on his form.
"I'm very focused this year and I want to improve again and move on again," he added.
"The personal break I had in the summer was great to get away from football for a month.
"The whole contract thing is definitely a weight off my shoulders. That's great for me. Not only did I get bored with it I think everybody got bored reading about it. I know that."

Roy Keane wants his Sunderland side to begin emulating the achievements of Premier League new-boys Hull.
The Black Cats boss has been forced to watch in awe as the Tigers have taken the top flight by storm this year.
Admirable victories away at Tottenham and Arsenal have lifted Phil Brown's men into third spot in the table, and raised expectations around the KC Stadium.
A top half finish is now a realistic ambition for Hull, while Keane is hoping Sunderland can also claw their way into the top 10.
"It's good for football, in terms of the way Hull have come up and done well," the Irishman told the Black Cats' official website.
"It happened a few years ago when Reading first got promoted and it's great to see.
"It's going to be a long, hard season, we all know that. Every team will have its ups and downs and I'm sure Hull will have disappointments along the way.
"I'm pretty sure, come the end of the season, which teams will be in the top four, I'd be very surprised if any team was to break into that.
"But in terms of the other positions, if Hull keep going there's no reason why they can't finish in the top half, that's where we are aiming to go."
Meanwhile, Keane is hoping to welcome Kenwyne Jones back into his first-team fold ahead of Wear-Tyne derby with Newcastle on 25th October.
The Trinidad & Tobago striker suffered a serious knee injury while on international duty against
England in June, but is making steady progress in his rehabilitation.
"The Fulham game (18th October) will come too early for him but we'd hope he's available after that," said Keane.
