The Sin: Gluttony is one of the most digusting sins, and Maradona exemplifies it in the pic at left. By the time this shot was taken, the man who was the best player in the world (maybe ever) had indulged himself to excess on food, wine and drugs. He failed to abide by Proverbs 23:21, which states that “[f]or the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.” Gluttony wages an ugly war vs. the virtue of moderation. World Cup Finalists Are Known

Now that we know the teams that will be making it to South Africa for the World Cup finals, i think its time we all took the bold step of picking our favorites to win the tournament. I know many of you might say that the right time to do this will be after the group stage draw that will happen in about two weeks time on the 4th of December.

The Sin: When I was a kid, I didn’t know Spielberg’s The Goonies was one of the weirdest movies ever. I mean, the bad guys literally keep their ”special” kin chained in the basement where he has absolutely nothing to do. As he was a pretty idle guy, it was fitting they named him Sloth. After all, according to Proverbs 19:15, ”slothfulness castesth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hungry.” It makes sense, right? He was awfully hungry for Chunk’s Baby Ruth.

The Sin: For those of you who were wondering: yes, that is a miniature inflatable Skeletor. As regular readers know, I have christened Bob Bradley “Skeletor” due to the resemblance his bony visage shares with that of He-Man’s nemesis. I don’t mean the nickname as a slight, mind you, I just think both men share a sometimes wrathful look, which isn’t necessarily a good thing. After all, “the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God” according to James 1:20.

Bruce Arena named manager of the year

Los Angeles Galaxy’s Bruce Arena was named the 2008 Major League Soccer coach of the year Wednesday, after guiding the club to its first playoff berth since 2005.

That line does not do justice to the job that Arena did for the Galaxy this year. Last season the Galaxy finished bottom of the Western Conference after conceding a league-high 62 goals. Everyone knows that defense will Championship and Arena was able to slash the goals against from 68 to 31 goals this season. The Sin: Envy has always been associated with the color green, probably in a large part thanks to the Bard’s classic Othello. In that play, the jealousy that accompanies envy is referred to as ”the green-eyed monster”. Proverbs 23:17 also warns against it, stating that one should ”Let not thine heart envy sinners, but be thou in the fear of the Lord.” Envy can make us resent a person simply because they have had some good fortune. It’s why we hate Tom Brady.

This is a ‘call to arms’ for all you passionate football fans out there – we need you!!

At the end of November we’re shooting a very exciting Mastercard Champions League commercial that will recreate what it was like for the fans in the terraces watching the most memorable games in European football over the last ten years.

We’re looking for the most emotional, charismatic fans that were there that night…. or watching somewhere else wishing they were there. Do you think you could re-live those moments for this commercial? The Sin: Pride is often called the “ultimate sin” because it leads to so many of the other sins. According to Proverbs 16:18, “Pride goeth before destruction”. It’s true, too. I define “pride” as the unwillingness to view one’s own abilities objectively, or – to put it bluntly – insincere self-respect. Pride is akin to vanity, and it is the root of almost every other major sin. Think about it: this sin wars against a humble spirit, which Jesus says we need to hump it up to heaven (Matthew 5:5).
