Raul against Werder Bremen

Real Madrid started their Champions League campaign by beating Werder Bremen 2-1 in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Two goals from Raul and Van Nistelrooy ended Madrid's bad spell in the European competition which hopefully will be for Madrid this year.

Once the match kicked off, the two teams tested each other with some long bases. Real Madrid were more into the game and moved forward, while Bremen defended wisely and brilliantly.
Then Bremen started attacking through their attacking midfielder, Diego. As Diarra is suspended, he found it quite easily to move around while Gago just looking.

Real Madrid attacked few times especially through the right wing, with the help of Wesely Sneijder and Marcelo who played as a left-back to replace the injured Gabriel Heinze.

In the 16th minute of the game, Rau'l scored great goal through a superb cross from Ruud Van Nistelrooy. The cross wasn't hight and rather slow, but Rau'l's talent allowed him to put it right there, inside.Raul Gonzalez Blanco

The game seemed to be open and Bremen started to attack. Diego passed the ball to the right wing and Tosic crossed it inside Casilla's area as Sanogo scored the equalizer. It wasn't a good goal, I didn't like it much ;).

Guti is superbly brilliant! He sent the ball through Bremen's defense to find Marcelo who passed it to Rau'l, but he couldn't score and also Ruud couldn't kill the Germans as the defenders disallowed him.

Real Madrid put some pressure and ball possession, but no luck. The referee sent his whistle to end the first half, 1-1 in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

The second half began so quickly with Bremen the first to attack. They had a chance in 46th minute but Diego couldn't do anything.

Higuain then had a good ball sent to him by Marcelo but he rushed and shot the ball which was disallowed by the German goalkeeper.

Diego won right-sided, free-kick which he sent right into the box but it was quite hight. Higuain had a second chance in the 54th minute, from a corner-kick but it was far away and high from the goal.

Rau'l had a good chance in 67th minute of the game but once again it was disallowed by the Germans. Soon after, Bernd Schuster sent Robinho in to replace Higuain on the right wing.
Robinho's magic started as he sent a superb assist to Ruud but couldn't manage to score the second goal.

Guti as usual put on a great display and sent superb assist to Raul who passed it on to Ruud's own who had no choice but to put it on the back of the net giving the lead to Real Madrid.

Robben
had his debut in the minute 83th, as he was brought in to replace Raul. He performed quite well and tried to score but he hadn't much luck.

In a nutshell, Real Madrid performed quite well during the two halves. They were obviously missing Diarra in the midfield. Schuster should have played Robinho instead of Higuain, as the Argentine can't do what Robinho is capable of.

Real Madrid are now their group leaders with three points ahead, while just one point for both of Lazio and Olympiacos.

Rajab,a big up to u buddy! Yo prediction was super,am hurt though. Not to take anything away from Gogo we missed the services of Diarra. Diego, found it a walk in the park. There's room for improvement though he's still young. I never expected Bremen to play like this in our back yard. Anyway, three point remained at bernabeu. Hala madrid!

Rajab, well your predictions were almost right, but I dont believe your opinions about Gago.He is still a young player but he has shown, even in yesterday's game, that with consistency he will be able to command the defensive midfield. also the comparism of Gago with Diarra is not fair. Give him a chance!!!

Hi guys,
first off, I'm glad that we won. I have nothing against Gago. He is an incredible player but he needs a lot of time to perform much better. If he takes this time in Madrid playing as a starter, the team is the victim. Therefore, If Real Madrid loan him, that would be great. He will gain more experience and will be ready to play for a big club like Real Madrid.
If you've noticed yesterday, Diarra was obviously missed. Gago couldn't stop Diego, so how on earth could he stop Kaka or Ronaldinho?.

This is the Champions League, one mistake from one player costs a competition.
Hala Madrid

I agree that Diarra was seriously missed yesterday but if we loan Gago, who will replace Diarra if he is down with another injury? Cultivating a player within a squad helps him more to develop with that squad. Look at what happened to Woodgate. However, I fully agree with you that Gago should apply himself more in subsequent games.
HALA MADRID!!!

Francies, I believe that Madrid made a mistake by selling Emerson to Milan. Emerson is more like Diarra, solid and experienced. I think he would played better yesterday.

[...] Bernd Schuster, Real Madrid coach, has stated that he is very happy with Real Madrid’s performance last night and most importantly with the 2-1 win. Real Madrid beat Werder Bremen 2-1 in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, last night, in their first Champions League clash. The two goals came from Rau’l and Ruud Van Nistelrooy. Rau’l scored his 57th goal in the European competition leading the all time top goal scorers, while the Dutchman has 50 goals and is second. Alright Rajab, maybe Emerson might have performed better, why not lets make do with what we have and forget our past players, no matter how bad for us you think the transfres were. We have had the ill-luck of selling great players, but that does not mean we should dwell on their absence in our team. Emerson is old, Gago is young and with quality training and consistency, he will become the greatest defensive midfielder in Real Madrid history.
Hala Madrid!!!

Emerson is old and can't play 60 matches in a year. But he can play in the ones where he is needed.
Gago is improving, and I hope he become much better.

to think all you guys doubted schuster in the begining of the signing to me he is certainly living up to a real coach for this club i think they played well on tuesday despite the 2-1 score line if you add up all the chances we had exept for some good goal keeping or defence we would have been 4 -1 up and as far as gago goes i thing this kid is great he's ball control to his passing it was superb he never messed up a pass or lost control if there is anything he lacks it would be experience and pysical presence diarra is a big guy and certainly almost everytime wins a 50/50 challenge because of hes strength give gago some time and he will surprize us and the whole of europe and the world

hala madrid !
