OFFICIAL: Benfica Sign Javier Saviola From Real Madrid

Saviola

The club has officially issued this statement.

Real Madrid CF has reached an agreement with Sport Lisboa e Benfica for the transfer of Javier Saviola. The Club wants to thank the player for his work and wishes him to be successful in this new stage in his career

UPDATE: Saviola moved to Benfica for €5m.

When I first heard that Schuster wanted to bring Saviola to Real Madrid, I was pretty excited. I liked and still like Saviola's pace, positioning and dribbling skills, but he was unlucky wherever he went. Schuster, the man who brought him, was the same man who benched him for the whole season, and Juande Ramos was no different as he too had no faith in the Rabbit.

Everyone knew he was going to leave, especially with the presence of players like Higuain, Rau'l, Huntelaar and Ruud Van Nistelrooy. If Saviola was given more chances, I'm sure he'd have contributed to the team, but he was never match-fit, and for that you have to blame Senor Bernard.

His move to Benfice is no surprise. The Portuguese club expressed their interest in the player many times in the past. There were also some offers from England, but it seems that Javier wanted Portugal. I don't think this move necessarily means that we need a new striker, unless we sell one of our other four. As I said, there is no point in signing a striker when we have four that are good. We should never sign players just for the sake of it.

So I think we should all wish Saviola the best of luck in his career. I know many of you never liked him, but I think he deserves respect for his professional attitude and patience. Cassano was in his shoes once, and made a fuss about it, Saviola didn't, and for that I admire him. He is one of the most respectable and disciplined footballers I've ever seen.

 Gracias Javier!

Hala Madrid

I can't remember the story perfectly, but may be perez said , I would rather prefer 1 zidane than 5 saviola.(when perez bought zidane n saviola went to barca) So actually Perez wasn't wrong all the time ;)

The difference is this...Cassano brought the trouble on himself (by acting like Capello) and Saviola did nothing wrong...so I admire Saviola much more...I think 5m is a very good price for R.Madrid...atleast we got back what we paid in wages ;)

I too was excited when we signed him, largely because we were getting him for Barca. Never lived up to his expectations though, although hardly was given a fair chance.

Wish him all the best.
