What Is Real Madrid's Best Starting Lineup?

Thursday, 09 October 08, 01:01 PM · Comments (16)

The Real Madrid Team - 2006/2007

That's a tough question because it depends. It depends on the team you are playing, on the players you have and on other factors, but If you were Bernd Schuster, and you had everyone fit, who would you lineup?

Okay, lets assume that I'm Bernd – my lineup would be like this:

 4-1-4-1

Casillas:
Obviously, everyone will pick up Casillas. Not only because he won the Euro 2008, but because he is always consistent and is a goalie that you can truly count on.

Ramos:
Sergio Ramos has improved dramatically during the last couple of seasons. I wasn't impressed with his performances when he came in 2005, but as I said, he has significantly improved, and is now considered to be one of the best defenders on the planet.

Pepe:
A lot of people criticized Calderon for paying 30m euros for a bald, skinny guy called Pepe (no offense). I even questioned his signing, but the guy has shown respect, commitment and hard work. He really kicked-ass against Barcelona last season at the Cam Nou, that's when he started being the real “Pepe”.

Cannavaro:
If you know me, then you know that I'm a big, big, fan of Cannavaro. I'm not gay, but I love him and I have a lot of respect for him. Although he is quite old, Cannavaro is still undeniably one of if not the best central defender in the world.

He has the experience, the physical shape and the winning mentality that a Real Madrid player should have. Why not pick him, when he is the World Champion too?

Marcelo:
I thought I'd go for Heinze in here, but you know what, I don't think he is better than Marcelo, at least, not right now. Yes, Heinze has got the experience, but he doesn't have a brain “sometimes” and usually make a lot of stupid mistakes (Real Madrid vs Espanyol - last weekend).

On the other hand, Marcelo is younger, faster and growing. He might lack the experience required for a Champions League knock-out clash, but he has everything else. I say, I have faith in this pal.

Diarra:
Lets face it: Diarra is the only “real” defensive midfielder we have. I don't think Gago is as solid as Mahamduo.

Gago might have the excellent passing skill (that he was brought for) – but he doesn't have what Diarra has – the strength in midfield.

For God sake, can Gago bring Cristiano Ronaldo or Messi down? Perhaps, but I think Diarra, from a defensive perspective can do a better job.

Van Der Vaart:
Guti could go in here? Well.... What I hate about Guti is the fact that he only plays well when he is in mood. In other words, he is inconsistent. If I just knew what makes him in good mood, I'd let Schuster know. Maybe sex 20 minutes prior to a game? As Pepe knows? I don't know, so I'd go for Van Der Vaart instead.

Sneijder:
Wesley is the sort of player who is capable of changing the fate of opposing teams. He is class – and I hate those jerks who claim that he can't win the Ballon D'or or the FIFA World Player of The Year.

People, it doesn't only depend on the player and his performances, it depends on the team he is playing on, what trophy they won (In this case, the Champions League gets you the award) and how many goals you scored.

That's how Cannavaro won it. He won it because:
1- He won the World Cup with Italy.
2- He gave a fantastic performance throughout the tournament.
3- He won the Seria A with Juventus.

So If Real win the Champions League, and Sneijder scores 4 or 5 goals in that tournament, he will get it - for sure.

Robben:
Injuries has chased Robben since he started playing football professionally. I was doing his OleOle profile the other day and I was surprised to know how many things he achived when he was just starting out.

Now, Robben is surely among the world's best wingers. He is fast, smart and shoots well. Hell, he is class.

Saviola:
I belive in Saviola so much. And this would be a tough decision because I'd choose between: Rau'l – the legend and captain & Higuain – the young and impressive, but it would be Saviola.

I have followed him at Monaco, Barca and Sevilla. He is talented, but he is unlucky. I believe that he should have stayed at Sevilla or a smaller team rather than returning to Barca who treated him badly. He came here hoping for a better treatment and for a coach who is fare. Is Schuster fare? Not with Saviola, NO.

Van Nistelrooy:
I'm not gonna talk about this one. I'm not qualified sorry.

So, alright, I'm gonna shut up now. Answer that question.

Hala Madrid!

My lineup is pretty much like that just a few changes;
Casillas
Ramos Pepe Cannavaro Marcelo
Diarra
Sneijder Robben
Van der Vaart
Higuain
Van Nistelrooy

Mine defers in formation because I think Sneijder has shown in the Euro that he likes starting on the wing and moving around when he wants and it suits him. As for VDV, he's your typical playmaker so he gets the central midfield position with Diarra just in a more attcking way. Higuain plays supportive to RVN and is switched with Raul whenever not performing. As for RVN, he needs to be rested and Saviola needs to play, he's very talented and we shouldn't ruin talent like his. Other than that, the set-piece takers are perfect so is second captain unless ofcourse Guti and Raul are on the field. Hala Madrid! =D

Hey folks, my prefferred line-up is still the 5-3-2 formation i suggested we use a few weeks ago. The same formation we played with in the 2000 champions league run-in.

--------------Casillas
Ramos, Pepe, Cannavaro, Heinze, Marcelo.
----------Gago, Sneijder
-----------Van Der Vaart
-----Van Nistelrooy, Raul/Saviola

I still think this is the way to go since both our full-backs love going forward, and can now do so with more freedom as there is three men at the back instead of two. Also this formation can easily be converted into a 3-5-2 if were a goal down with twenty odd minutes left. In which case we can bring the likes of Robben and Higuain on. Both men, i feel, are better used playing 45 minutes or less. Especially Robben. I have chosen Gago above Diarra because, although i believe Diarra is stronger in the tackle his passing often lets him down. Sometimes ive seen him break up play then cheaply surrender possesion putting us back under pressure immediatley. Gago is still good in the tackle(if not as good as Diarra) but is a much better passer and which in the end, helps take the pressure of the back-line better than Diarra. Also at 20/21-years-old, Gago is only going to get better.
Until next time....HALA MADRID!!!

Then you don't know football. Why wouldn't you start him? You need to give him a chance first. Never look at names only

Saviola isn't bad. I wish for him to prove himself. Everytime he play's he's gives 100% and in Barcelona, when Etóo was injured he got the chance and made a terrific job and scored. It's amazing that they put him back on the bench when Etóo came back.
And Walker, it's a myth that Diarra's passes are bad. He got the highest % for some matches ago. The match when Gago got injured, Diarra came on in minute 36 and ended up fifth in the Top 5 over made passes. 95 % came to the right adress. He's just marvelous!

hi again for the best fans in the world of football, the Merengues fans, i'm not gonna talk about the lineup, but in the last game with espaniol barcelona, one thing made me mad about the defence(i don't know why Heinze was performing so bad like this and making big mistakes) all 2 goals was his mistakes he caused the penalty and he didn't clear the ball before the player from espaniol scores, i'm really disappointed and i'm a big fan of him, so i wanted to say that shuster should bench him as a punichment and he should regain his class performance again( and not his hard defence with so much mistakes...)
and about the line up it is awesome and i think we should give saviola a chance but not in this important game because the 3 points are critical to us , we should start with Higuain instead of Raul(the Legend),that's all and nice work guys ;), Hala Madrid...
