Euro 2008 - Germany? Italy? Greece? Portugal? Who will move to the quarter-finals? Leave your predictions here!!!

Friday, 18 April 08, 11:12 PM

So we are less than two months away from kick off at the Euro 2008.

The main nations like Spain, Germany, Italy, Holland, France, Portugal … are intensifying their preparations for the most important competition in the continent.

After some research I could see that most of the betting sides point Germany as favorites to win the tournament followed by World Cup Champions Italy. Among internet users it seems that Spain is at the highest preference as possible winners.

I truly believe that none of these teams will take the title. I would put my money on France.

With Abidal, Diarra, Saha, Flamini, Vieira, Ben Arfa, Anelka, Ribery and Benzema … the French can even leave Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet sitting on the bench…

I don’t particularly support any of the teams although I always have hopes that Spain is going to perform well in and International Competition. (I’m getting tired of hoping).

But before getting to the finals the teams need to qualify in their groups so my first question for you, CRAZY FOOTBALL FANS is … who are the teams that will make to the quarter-finals

HERE ARE THE GROUPS:

whoever tops the holland france italy group will win, unless it's romania by some freak chance. portugal won't win as they don't have an amazing striker just lots of great wingers

I agree with qotsa101, Portugal could be a good team but they have no "killer instinct" in the box...

I really think that this euro is going to speak spanish because spain has a young team with a lot of experience at the international level, they have the best players in the world, a keeper as casillas, sergio ramos at defense, cesc fabregas in the middle, and fernando torres as the striker it is perfect.

Group A: Switzerland and Czech Republic
Football is a business - if two countries organize a big tournament, at least one of them WILL qualify to quarterfinals, that's for sure. And, honestly, no one expects Austria to qualify from group B, heh?
As for Czech Republic and not Portugal - everything will depend on the match between these two teams and I think that in this particular match Czech Rep. will be superior.

Group B: Croatia and Germany
I wish I could say: Croatia and Poland, but the truth is that everything will depend on the first match (Poland-Germany), which I think will be either draw or win for Germany.

Group C: I don't dare to guess - this is the Group of Death, everything can happen here.
One note: Romania is stronger, than you'd suspect.

Group D: Spain and Russia
Sweden and Greece have currently nothing to show

Group A Portugal & Czech (though not sure how they will do without nedved and rosicky), Group B Germany & Croatia (though austria might be the surprise package as they are the home nation), Group C Holland & France ( I know Italy are the world champions but i got feeling holland will beat them in the opening game and i cannot see france mucking up against Romania, this is def the group of death). Group D Spain and Sweden (I know everyone is predicting Russia to do well but when they are not a home they rarely turn up but they do have the manager of managers so who knows)

Group A: Czech and Portugal look good however we have to take Turkey under consideration as they have good strong spirit to fight to the end. Group B: Here I am going for Polska and Germany the starting kick off game will be the key if Poland prepare itself well just like they did with Portugal game they might have a chance to draw or perhaps win with German team as the coach Leo looks like he did a lot with that team however Croatia has a well organized team. Group C hmmm i believe Italy and France are the favorites with that killer instinct but again Ned and Romania will be very challenging teams to beat. Group D Espana seems like the favorite here with Ruskie however Sweden always have had great spirits and even more now upon Larsson return. All teams have good chances to qualify it all depends on tactics, spirit, form, and of course a little luck.

I read an article the other that summarized Spain's spirit for this Euro with the following sentence: "Spain hopes to win but they are afraid they won't." I personally see Spain as a team to be respected but do they really have what it takes to win the competition? I honestly don't think so...

Group A: Portugal and Turkey (since rosicky is injured Czech wont make it)Group B: Croatia and Germany (germany obviously, and Crotia has Olic, Modric, Krankjar, corluka etc.) Group C: France and Netherlands (Netherlands has an awesome team, better then italy, and france has Benzema, Nasri, nd RIbery, no chance for romania or italy) Group D: Sweden and Spain (because Greece isnt gona get lucky again, Russia wont be underestimated, Spain has TORRES and Navas, and SILVA, and Sweden is a favorite

I Love to see your predictions European "Brothers"...You underestimateagain the European Champions HellasI(Greece)..You ll never understand why Hellas(Greece) won the Euro 2004..Its nice for our team that you believe it was due to lucky..One thing:Hellas(Greece) qualified to euro 2008 with the most points than any other team..Group A:Portugal,Chech cause are the most quality and experienced teams of the group.Group B Germany and Poland cause Germany are a good team and poland are sick to have a succes in a big tournament like euro or world cup.Group C:Netherlands and Italy cause Netherlands are the best team in europe right now and Italy are the world champions tha has the wining spirti at he moment...And Group D:Hellas(Greece) and Spain cause nobody seems to give any chances to Hellas (again)...ANd cause is bettetr team than euro 2004..And spain cause they are Quality team.

Good point Aenaos. People in general understimate teams like Greece and Poland (among others) because they are not in the spotlight all the time. A few weeks ago a Danish journalist wrote me to ask my opinion on Greece for the Euro 2008: I'll copy the questions and my answers here for you guys to read and AGREE or DISAGREE...
-----------------
1) How do you see Greece's chances at the
Euro 2008?

Greece's luck during the qualifying, when they basically cruised having only one tough challenge that was Turkey, repeated in the final group stage. Russia and Sweden are at the same level as the Greek so the Hellenic team can have a good shot at securing one of the two top spots in the group. Spain is the big challenge but we never know how they are going to perform.
Two wins in the first two matches might guarantee both Spain and Greece in the next round.

2) Who do you think will be Greece's big profile during Euro 2008?

Giorgos Karagounis. Even though his period with Benfica was not as successful as when he played in Italy for Inter, he still feels the most comfortable when wearing the National shirt. Now that he's been back to Panathinaikos he will be able to perform once again his best football and show that at the 2008 Euro.

3) What do you think of Otto Rehhagel as a coach?

My impression is that his rustic style fits well with small teams. He know how to teach discipline defense tactics and how to suffocate bigger team offenses. It worked when he turned Werder Bremen into a successful team in the 80's and it also worked very well with the strengh of Greek midfielders. I believe he's a great coach in the style he knows best which doesn't mean I personally admire that style.

4) Which tactical formation do you expect Greece to use?
And with which 11 players?

I believe that Rehhagel will not repeat the 4-5-1 from last Euro, intead he will go with a 4-4-2 but still using two typical defensive midfielders right in front of his central defenders and two other midfielders in front of them forming a third line of protection. That will be very useful specially against the fast and young Spanish team.

1)In qualifing stage Hellas(Greece) had two tough oponents Turkey and Norway.Norway is very good team. And in the modern european football the teams we call "small" like bosnia or cyprus or northern ireland arent so easy to beat them and Hellas had some dificlusties to win such games. They finally won some games in the last minutes or..seconds..If you have seen the qualifing games you had feel the Heart and Egoism of the Champions Hellas still having..Thats the best achievement of this team..2)Yeah Karagounis turn back in Panathinaikos and feels like home..He is all gams in firs eleven and in national team will be one of the leaders alongside Basinas Dellas and Katsouranis.3)Rehagel is a Wise man..Not only a coach..You can say he is not the best coach in the world but he is wise like a man.I think he is one of the best coach in europe.4)In qualifings Rehagel used 4-3-3

All I have to say to quotsa101 and the "unless romania qualify by some freak chance" is:

Romania 2-0 Czech Republic
Romania 1-0 Spain
Romania 1-0 Netherlands
Romania 3-0 Russia

The only game we've lost against a team qualified for Euro 2008 in the past week was Germany.. who we played our first 11 against for 35 minutes and it was 1-0 for us, then slowly withdrew our players. At the end, we had a team almost 100% from the Romanian League playing against Podolski, Lahm, Swinsteiger, etc... and lost it in the last bit of the game.

We have Holland down to a science, France and Italy can't beat Scotland and you think it would be a fluke if we qualified from that group?

This is all I have to say.. Where is England? Who eliminated you in 2000 with all your stars like Shearter, Owen, Becks, etc? Do you remember 98? I think we should be the new Irish.. Romanian luck! Kiss me I'm Romanian.

And to everyone else.. watch Romania carefully at Euro. We play more open and attractive football than most or equal to the "best" in Europe. Romania and Croatia will provide a lot of entertainment. In my opininon, we have a more balanced team now than we did in our "golden generation" when we beat Argentina, England, Colombia, and other great teams of the time. And croatia look almost as dangerous and open as Suker's croatia. IF we move on and do well, it won't be because we play 7 men on defense.. because if you saw Boro-Steaua.. you know Romanians can't play that game. :P
