Last night LDU - Liga Deportiva Universitaria - from Quito, Ecuador, defeated the Brazilian side of Fluminense in the penalty shootout to win the 2008 Copa Libertadores title and secure the South American spot in the FIFA Club World Cup.
An impressive achievement for sure but now the question is simple: Can this humble team cause one of the greatest upsets in the history of football and beat the super-powered Manchester United?
I honestly doubt it.
In the last 10 years the title of "Best Club of The Planet" only ended in the hands of a South American team 4 times and it was only with Boca Juniors, twice, and two other Brazilian clubs, São Paulo and Internacional.
LDU has some really talented players (Guerron, Bolaños, Vera, Manso and Bieler) but without the financial resources of the big teams from Europe or even from Brazil or Argentina it will be very hard to keep these players on the squad until December.
Guerron, the most talented on the list, is the first one to leave. He has already signed with Spanish side of Getafe. That transfer by itself is a huge loss for Liga.
La Liga de Quito and Pachuca are, in my opinion, at the same level and both teams might face each other in a possible semifinal to decide who will be the one to play a possible final against Manchester United.
This is football. Everything is possible even when it's 99% improbable.
Here is how the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup table looks like so far:

I didn't know it was a random draw. I assumed it was a formula that they repeated for every edition but you're absolutely right. I checked the previous editions (2006 and 2005) and there is not a pre-determined formula. Thank you for calling my attention on this.
But don't forget that LDU's main players are leaving. Guerron has already signed with Getafe and Bolanos might leave too. If Liga can find good players to replace those they have a chance
This is nutzo, we are talking about LDU, and a joke libertadores where the final games had 10 goals. The south american teams are so bad that Fluminense in last place of Brazilian league makes it to the finals. South American teams are in decay, and all the good players from LDU will be gone to Europe before the tournament for champion begins. Any how, it doesn't matter, because once LDU goes against a team that plays defense they will be destroyed. It is sad times for South American Soccer, where nasty europe buys our players for nothing.
I know LDU players, I have play woth them in the youth teams, I KNOW LDU IS HUNGRY and do not forget ECUADOR's NATIONAL TEAM BASE is in LIGA DE QUITO LDU or pardon LIGA DE AMERICA.
I Thing that we ca defeat every team IF WE BELIEVE, It was a dream to get the libertadores, WHY not the World cup? don't forget Ecuador play a very good match agains ENGLAND in THE WORLD CUP and I you thing about is allmost the same team that did play in the World cup, LDU players won in MARACANA from BRAZIL and in AZTECA STADION in MEXICO, defeated 3 ARGENTINIAN teams bevore getting in the finals, and you thing LDU has not enough team ? IF LDU plays so well as in the final with our SOUTHAMERICAN STILE we can do a very interesting match.
DONT FORGET "DER BALL IST RUND UND DAS SPIEL DAUERT 90 MINUTEN" (GERMAN's coach 1950 before of the final agains Putchkas dream team when nobody though Germany could ever win the World cup) The ball is round an the match takes 90 minutes to end, everything can happen in the feald there are 11 again 11 Players, An I know LIGA has not only 11 Players on the feald they have 11 friends with 13 million Ecuadorian hopping they can get the cup
I can not wait to see these matches and to see my team playing with the best clubs of the world
I hope the best winns
The only players going are Gerron from LDU to GETAFE in Spain, and VERA to MEXICO, all the other players still play with LDU untill the world cup, AND LDU has a lot of good players in the bank, like DELGADO, SALAS or VACA.
And LDU is going to get somebody very good in the next week to get fit not only to the local championship but for these very important tournament
I agree with you partially Konrad. La Liga did have a good team and deserved to win the Libertadores.
I just don't think that IF they make it to the final against Manchester United they will have the same space that they had against the South American teams.
Can LDU beat ManU? Yes, of course. In football anything can happen. Is it probable? No. I, as a journalist who is not afraid of giving my real point of view, have to say that realistically speaking the probability that LDU is going to beat Manchester United is very low.
You said that most players from the Ecuatorian National squad are from La Liga and it is a good team indeed but ManU's players come from every part of the world. But don't get me wrong. I'll cheer for La Liga all the way. I hope they win. I'm not a fan of the EPL football.
So let's see what team LDU will take to Japan and then we'll have a better idea of how they will perform.
You guys dont know what you are talking about! Pachuca will beat All of those teams this year you mark my words!!
I agree with Manogil, I am a Man Utd supporter and we have a very strong team and it looks like we will be keeping all our best players and will probably add to the squad by the start of the season. I watched the Copa Libertadores and LDU had a lot of spirit and finished well, but you would expect Man Utd to be too strong for them. However as others have said strange things do happen as LDU have proved by getting this far. The only way I can see them winning is if Man Utd have a few injuries, play below their usual standard and luck is against them, but it can happen, look at Internacional beating Barcelona in 2006. I think LDU will be tested in the semi finals by whoever they get, particularly if it is someone like Urawa who will have home advantage.

I believe that LDU Quito has enough Team to get to the Final.
Totally!!! I mean, I believe that the possible semifinal Pachuca x LDU will be quite interesting but now honestly, would you put your money on LDU in a possible final against Manchester United?
