Liverpool looking lost

Wednesday, 27 August 08, 11:33 PM

Yikes. Hopefully the daily poll won’t become a regular jinx for its topic, because Liverpool sure didn’t come out well from their experience today.

First, they needed an extra-time goal from Dirk Kuyt just to get through their Champions League qualifier against Standard Liege. This wasn’t supposed to be a hard win in the second leg, and check out this recap from The Guardian’s Kevin McCarra, who obviously wasn’t impressed. This is just the latest in a series of uninspiring performances from the Reds to start this season. They’ve managed to pull them out, but like all parents tell their teenagers, that crazy lifestyle will catch up with you in the long run.

Vidic wants out of Man United because of weather???Chelsea appears set with Robinho

Wednesday, 27 August 08, 05:16 AM

Apparently, a lot can depend on your point of view. I arrived home from work this evening to a rather humorous contrast in headlines. First, I glanced at ESPN Soccernet to see what had happened in the previous couple of hours. Low and behold, I find myself staring at the main front package headline with a huge picture of Nemanja Vidic, Manchester Uniteds’s accomplished defender, that says: “Vidic ‘wants Spain move.’”

Somewhat shocked, I read on to find that he does not like the weather according to a recent interview. He also doesn’t like the culture, saying it’s easier to adapt to Russia than England. Thinking to myself, ‘Wow, that development is a little shocking,’ I swing on over to The Guardian’s home page to see what they have on the matter....

Manchester United and the Berbatov Effect

Tuesday, 26 August 08, 04:44 AM

It’s hard to understand why Tottenham is handling the Dimitar Berbatov issue this way. First of all, they have most likely overvalued him at 30 million pounds, although most likely that’s because Manchester United possesses formidable financial capabilities and they believe that the Reds will spare no expense in obtaining a piece they deem crucial to securing another Premiership crown.

My fellow Soccer Examiner deemed in this post that Berbatov is not a need for United. Allow me to agree, as they hold the pieces right now to a team that can win titles. Berbatov would be, however, a luxury, and a luxury that in the long run would make the squad better, more potent up front and able to take a little of the pressure off of Cristiano Ronaldo to both control the game in the midfield and provide a majority of the scoring.

And luxuries my dear friends, for those of you familiar with the club, are not in short supply at Old Trafford. That’s why I still believe you will see this go through.
