The US WNT traveled to Europe for a two game tour in Norway and Sweden. These two games are part of the preparation for the 2008 Olympics.
First, they played their long time rival Norway. This is only the third time the USA has played in Norway, and the first time they defeated them on their own turf.
Lindsay Tarpley scored the first goal in the 4th minute. Abby Wambach received a throw-in, turned inside the box and played the ball to Tarpley, who scored into the lower left corner from 10 yards out.
The second goal came 7 minutes into the second half. Tarpley passed the ball to Natasha Kai, who then passed it to Carli Lloyd who took a left-footed shot from 12 yards out.
Angela Hucles scored the 3rd goal. Hope Solo drop-kicked the ball to the top of the box which forced the Norwegian goalkeeper to come off her line and kick the ball out.The ball bounced to Hucles who noticed the goalie was way off her line and took a shot from 40 yards out.
"You pretty much don’t think about. It was one of those split-second decisions you make on the field. You hope your skill comes in a little bit and a little bit of luck. It was probably one of the most technical goals I’ve ever scored.”
Abby Wambach added to the lead, and her total, in the 78th minute. Amy Rodriguez, having just come into the game, played a through ball to the top of the box. Wambach slotted the ball into the lower right corner. This was the 99th career goal for Abby Wambach.
The US played Sweden next. It was the first time they played them in Sweden. It was also the first time head coach Pia Sundhage coached the US against her own country.
The US came out on top with a goal from Carli Lloyd. She played a corner kick short to Tarpley, who passed it back to Lloyd, who dribbled into the box through 3 defenders, and took a shot from 15 yards out which was deflected by a defender into the left corner.
