by Michael Sinnerton Best Ever? The 2008 Premier League season is set to be the best ever. With 16 games gone, we have a 3-way title race and a proper race for fourth place with Aston Villa just one point behind Arsenal, having already beaten them. Meanwhile 8th to 20th is seperated by just ten points, and 9th placed Fulham are just 5 points away from the drop zone. Pre-season favourites Chelsea and Manchester United have both lost twice already with a resurgent Liverpool leading the way. The first few weeks of the season were Hull's time but rather than fade away badly, they lie 6th just 3 points behind Arsenal (they've beaten Arsenal too).
Bottom club West-Brom are struggling but have hope - more than can be said about Derby last year - and the relegation fight could be the best in years with everyone but the top 8 looking nervously over their shoulders. We've had games of the quality of Arsenal - Manchester United, Everton - Aston Villa and Arsenal - Tottenham. A race at both ends of the table, what a season to savour. Quality Dropping? A Liverpool side that has drawn with Fulham, Stoke and West Ham sits a-top the Premier League, the fortress that was Stamford Bridge has collapsed with Chelsea winning just 3 from 8 at home this season. Even reliable old Manchester United lie 6 points off the pace (albeit with a game in hand) and needed the latest of late goals to beat a very average Sunderland side. Arsenal are in disarray, they've lost 5 from 16 and still find themselves in fourth place. The supposedly strong challenge from Aston Villa, is based on hype and more due to the Gunners than Villa themselves. The other potential challengers, Portsmouth, Everton and Tottenham are 6,7 and 11 points back respectively. West Brom are a lovely football side that seem to have forgotten the main aim of the game is to score. Blackburn are struggling. West Ham are my tip to go down and Stoke....Stoke are 13th. A strong Premiership and Stoke in 13th must be at least verging on an oxymoron. Hull have faded dramatically, winning just once in 7 but are still 6th in the league. Meanwhile Bolton, under Gary Megson, are 10th and Joe Kinnear is managing Newcastle. Quality must be dropping. |
