If moaning fans won Premier League games, Arsenal would be runaway champions. Our spectacular defeat to Hull brought out the worst in us Gooners. We are one of the most expensive teams in the world to watch, the cheapest season tickets costing £925, and this is the source of the nauseating indignation and self-pity. I have forked out for a season ticket that I can barely afford, and I too was humiliated by the loss to the Tigers. Many Arsenal fans seem to think that the amount they pay for their tickets is an ironclad guarantee that things like this won't happen; a promise of big-name signings and winning trophies. Sadly, football doesn't work like that.
Some of the comments I've read recently from the thousands of Arsenal blogs that plague the internet have been bordering on the absurd - that fans have a "right" to know where their money's going. Do you see shoppers at Tesco demanding that the directors spend their profits on more exotic vegetables? It's the same principle; if you don't like it, you shop at Sainsbury's. If you think Arsenal are too expensive, go and support Barnet!
If I bought my season ticket in exchange for a promise of star signings and a Premier League title win, wouldn't it defeat the point of football? It's supposed to be unpredictable. Take the Hull defeat with a pinch of salt - they were better than us on the day, and things like this do happen to football clubs! We're not special; we might laugh when Spurs and Newcastle fuck up but we're just as susceptible to these defeats as the next club. I would advise my fellow Gooners to stop feeling sorry for yourselves and just support the damn club.
Also never bet on a match involving your own side. Too messy!
