Straight to Hull

Tuesday, 30 September 08, 08:31 AM · Comments(0)

Hmmm, perhaps I wasted the chance to use the headline yesterday, or even on Sunday. As a Clash fan, though, the news that Kolo Touré was apparently  "scared" to play Hull provides a temptation to difficult to resist. Sorry everyone.

Kolo, Kolo, Kolo, why so scared Kolo? Did you think Hull City had the Devil up front, supported by Michael Myers from Halloween on the right and the Scream masked dude from, um... Scream on the left? To be honest, so poor were we defensively on Saturday, that forward line might have smacked five past us.

Seriously, though, you can understand what he was saying, let's not forget Kolo is the only first team member who has survived the cull of the Invincibles- Gaël Clichy doesn't quite count in my view- so this man knows what it takes to win league titles- or better, a league title. He knows how the intensity has to be right, he knows that every game, even the "easy" ones will be battles. If Kolo Touré is worried about the team's focus early on, then all of the positivity (and I like to think I have been positive) of my writing here will count for bobbins. Unless Mr Wenger can address it. Kolo may just have talked himself out of a starting spot tonight. I've said before, I would like to see Johan Djourou starting games, he looked good with Gallas as the season began, it will be interesting (for those of you watching) to see if he is rewarded with a starting spot tonight.

Kolo's comments kind of back up what Arsène had to say after the game too- not that it needs to be backed up, anyone could tell the commitment was missing. It can't be that way tonight and nor do I think it will be.

If Nicklas Bendtner's fine early season form is not rewarded with a start, he will consider himself very unlucky. In midfield, the wonderful Samir Nasri, hopefully fully recovered, should come in for Eboue. Please, Arsène, a midfielder in a midfielder's spot! Don't drop Theo, he has the pace to hurt Porto. Eboue has... um... well, you tell us, boss.

(Sorry Eboue fans) Anyway, Wenger's 12th anniversary celebration- now the 4th longest serving manager in the football league, not bad for a "novice from Japan", was a damp squid. Let's see if the team and the fans can give him the belated present his time here so richly deserves. If you're going, scream your head off in getting behind the team, nobody will mind- well nobody worth worrying about anyway. The team can do without people scurrying for the exits with 15 minutes left. Despite games like Saturday, they do deserve better.
