Henry Situation is a Lose-Lose Scenario for Arsenal

Saturday, 16 June 07, 04:25 PM · Comments(10)

Two weeks into June, The La Liga still hasn't finished (and it is proabaly one of the most exciting title race finishes for a few years in all of europe), the under 21 championships are underway, copa america is set to start soon, The bungs inquiry report has been released, and new kits are being revealed day in day out yet none of the tabs can stop talking about Thierry Henry and his bloody childishness.

Don't get me wrong, I am a huge Arsenal fan, and a big admirer of Henry, when fit he is arguably the best and most consistent player in the world. Seeing Henry leave would sadden me, and also worry me, but i must say hes just being stupid, arrogant, spoiled, and inconsiderate.

Last year, he shat all over Arsenal and the fans all year long till he decided to stay, he claimed it would be his last contract, that he'd retire with arsenal and what not. This year the rumors have heated up once again and all he can do is lead and mis-lead. "For Now, I am with arsenal", "It's great to hear Milan want me", "Who knows what will happen, at the moment I'm with Arsenal", "David Dein leaving was not a clever move" " I am a big girl" Why must he spur on witless journalists with remarks like that. They'll just make up absurd stories headlined with "DEVASTATED HENRY GOES MENTAL OVER DEIN EXIT" or "HENRY HOLD SECRET TALKS WITH GREAT MILAN; CONTRACTS ALREADY AGREED" I as an arsenal fan find it insulting that my team captain A) has no respect to the fans, B) has no respect to the club or the board, C) Has no loyalty to the club that made him and D) Gets involved with topics that he knows aren't for him to discuss such as the board's decisions. Arseblog touched on this quite a bit recently, and I must agree with him.

So anyways onto what could happen I see 3 options and all of them are a lose lose situation for Arsenal, I think regardless Arsenal will come out of this ordeal hurt, even if slightly.

Scenario 1) Henry stays after billions of rumors and stories, The rate of Arsenal Fans with heart problems will increase due to the tabloid stories, but at the end of the day of most affiliated with the club will feel releaved. Henry will come out with typical player bullshit about "I love this club, it's My home, I want to make sure Arsenal reach the top again, the fans make me feel wanted"

Problem with scenario 1) Henry will continue to slam Dein's exit, or the water flavor, or the tie Wenger wears, or something else he should not involve himself in. The tabs will never stop springing up stories, the rumors will NEVER die down. The minute arsenal play a bad game or henry plays bad there will be "Henry Regrets staying, Opens Barca Door" headlines all over the place and the cycle of heart problem-filled summers continues.

Scenario 2) Henry goes to barca in exchange for Eto'o and POSSIBLY some small cash amount

Problems) Well, Titi is MUCH better than eto'o i know everyone in the world highly rates eto'o but for some reason I have never been convinced..regardless Eto'o is no henry, at all. Plus Henry is our captain, he understands the league, the team, the philosophy of the team, etc Eto'o would need time to settle in, get used to weather and use all the other Baptista Excuses. Plus Eto'o claims he doesn't want to leave Barca. Basically Henry is too big to be replaced by Eto'o and at this current time, Arsenal needs his quality and experience.

Scenario 3) Henry goes for cash, either to Barca or Milan, if its a cash only deal I'd think Milan have a stronger chance at Henry.

Problems) well its quite obvious, who fills Henry's boots? Especially if the deal is left late, who can arsenal possibly sign? No striker out there is Henry Calibre and could make an impact straight away..torres? eto'o? Villa? etc...no not good enough. While i trust Van Persie a Lot, and Adebayor a bit They would not be enough for Arsenal to be a serious contender in europe or in England. Furthermore his price tag is somehwere around 20 mil pounds which is DISGUSTING. Darren Bent who isnt worth Henry's glove and is inexperience as hell got a fee agreed for 18 million, carrick the shit from spurs got 16 or someting million, and shevchenko got 30 million. 20 million pounds for Henry is DISGUSTING, especially how 20 million wouldn't buy Arsenal a replacement...

Take care!

P.S 2 days ago I would have bet my house Henry was sticking around, as of today...I don't know its 50-50

We need to stop using the captaincy as a carrot to keep a player as it's even more a kick in the teeth when it's your captain going.
Will he go? I think your probably right that it's 50 50 but (and I really hate saying this as he's the best thing I've ever seen on a football pitch) given his closeness to the Dein family it's probably best long term if we make the money back from him now rather than watch the price go down and the club become even more unsettled.

If anything its a win-win situation. There's no point having grumpy players at the club, so if he wants to have a new challenge then by all means he's free to leave. If he leaves we'll get some serious cash and possibly Eto'o, which is great for our future (if not present). We have some very good leaders at the club, Gilberto and Kolo being the obvious candidates. So filling the captaincy void wouldn't be a problem.

If he stays we'll have arguably one of our greatest players ever remain at the club.

So why exactly is it lose-lose?

A lot of emphasis is placed on this Henry situation, but as an Arsenal watcher of long-standing, I remember being distraught when John Lukic left the club, worshiped at the feet of Alan Smith, gave praise at the altar of Ian Wright, despaired when Anelka was stolen by Real Madrid, and all of us wondered how we would get by without Patrick Vieira.

If Henry leaves just shrug your shoulders. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if we see Theo Walcott, or some other young prodigy, give an aging Henry the runaround in a Champions League quarter-final in a couple of years; after all, we watched Cesc do it to Vieira a couple of years back.

If you think Henry at this stage of his career is the key piece to this team then there is a huge problem. He is past his prime, and cannot be expected to play in over 70% of the season. that being said he is still a great tallent, but Arsenal should move to build up a team that can be champions not only of england but all of europe through the aquisition of players which are in or just short of their prime. even this new norwegian player is not the way to go right now, Arsenal have for too long aquired players that should make them a power house in a number of years and should look to make themselves a powerhouse now! not tomorow. Players like Teves, Diego Milito, Soldado or the like should be the type's they ought to target and if releasing Henry will facilitate that or force their hand to make such aquisitions then his leaving the club could be a blessing in disguise.

to everyone who's posted so far i must say thank u, its really interesting getting feedback..the comments have opened my eyes to a couple of things..i guess we'll just have 2 wait n c...to the latest comment discussing players at their prime etc, Wenger was never the type to buy players right at their prime n i dont think he ever will...while the strategy of buying players at or right b4 their peak cud make a strong team, it wont make a strong club, it would mean players would be going in an out of the club regularly, no one player lasting for more than four years or so...
keep them coming

and to number8..while u do make a good point about letting grump players leave...serious cash wouldn't really help fill the void and a fit henry would give us at least 20 goals easy, plus the 15 minimum that van persie wud give us...plus the odd 1 or two who'd chip in 8 or so...makes arsenal a very strong looking team...serious cash cant replace henry, neither could eto'o..and plus at the meantime the figure being named for henry is reportedly 20 million quid...thats hardly serious cash..its equivalent to Darren Bent n Fabianski...good point about gilberto n kolo i think gilberto is a better captain anyways..

"good point about gilberto n kolo i think gilberto is a better captain anyways."
I never been a fan of strikers as captains anyway or goalkeepers.
Our problem with Eto is like Adebayor he'd be off to the African cup of nations. So throw in an injury to Van Persie and who would we have? Baptista and Alliadiere have both gone so maybe a fit Walcott who's not really matured enough to come in off the wing and be the main man or Bentdner who's not proven at premiership level.
I don't see even Derby quaking at the thought of that prospect.
As usual we'll just have to wait and see who we've got come August 11th
