Ince sacked from Blackburn... But is he close to being the worst Premiership manager of all time?

Tuesday, 16 December 08, 07:14 PM · Comments(1)

Under Paul Ince, Blackburn have managed only 3 wins from 17 Premiership games and the club are in big trouble lying second bottom in the table. Their last league win came way back on 27th September when they beat Newcastle so to me the only surprise is that the Guvnor didn’t get the chop sooner” says Football Daft at lovefooty.com, but is he right? And has new Premiership manager Paul Ince been harshly treated given but 5 months in charge, or for the sake of all Blackburn’s fans, was it time he HAD to go?

Well, it’s difficult to judge with such a small number of games in the big leagues under his belt, but the chance of our Incey getting another bash at top flight management are slim, one would imagine. Which leaves me wondering who has been the very worst Premiership manager of all time...?

My mind flicks back to names like Les Reed, Christian Gross, Egil Olsen and Peter Reid – or good old Bryan Kidd? With so many options to pick from, I think one has to narrow down the criteria somewhat... Paul Ince is out, having played just 17 games, which also kicks Les Reed from the DSOTB shortlist too – much to my sadness.

This particular blunderer, who managed just one win, actually only took charge for seven – so I find it hard to name him the king of awful bosses... Even though he became infamous as the media attacked him on a regular basis, nicknaming him "Les Misérables" and "Santa Clueless", and was later voted in an unofficial online poll "the worst manager of all time.

Moving back a few years, Ed Bottomley on sportingo makes a good case on good old Mike Walker, suggesting that the silver haired assassin was “the worst manager to take the helm at Everton in modern times” despite costing a good wedge in compensation from Norwich City. “Compared to his Everton peers Walker limps in to last place with a pitiful win rate of just 32 per cent. Looking at the statistics makes you contemplate whether Walker was a saboteur”. Genius!

Christian Gross was no doubt a devastating mess at Tottenham, bringing in Ramon Vega to the club (in my opinion the worst defender ever to play in the Premier League) – and who can deny Egil Olson’s terrible record – “When Egil Olsen was sacked as Wimbledon manager in May 2000, Vinnie Jones said the only thing he regretted about the Norwegian's departure was that "I never got a chance to chin him".

But for me, and I may be biased due to his terrible season at Coventry in the Championship, I think Peter Reid must take the crown for being so monumentally crap all over the place. Helping set in the rot at my beloved Sky Blues, proving a total waste of space signing idiots at cash-strapped Leeds, long ball drudgery at Man City and taking Sunderland down (although admittedly having several good years there) – he did, at times, appear monumentally stupid! Orange Blog says “The former England midfielder tended to come across as (let's try and put this politely) an uncultured character who was very likely a stranger to the applications department at MENSA.” He has just won Thailand’s first silverware though, so perhaps it’s ever onwards and upwards for Peter!

Am I harsh suggesting he’s the worst Premier League manager of all time though – and does Ince come close? Let us know what you think...

OI!!! I am disgusted at your blatant over-abuse of Peter Reid! He managed to get Sunderland into the premiership with a then record points (105) and then came 7th twice - best performance by sunderland in decades! My worst manager award must go to Mick McCarthy - managed to get us promoted again but managed to win only 2 games in 45-odd premiership games. I feel sorry for the Wolves faithful
