All too often, referees get a real bad press.

After all, with 20,000 incredibly biased people screaming at you week-in, week-out – and football being the high octane, swift-paced sport it is, you’re bound to get some things wrong.... But sometimes, and usually when I’ve got a few quid on it, match officials have been known fuck up to an unbelievable degree... So unbelievable in fact, that one cannot quite believe the match reports until you’ve seen it for yourself.

In this case, step forward Nigel Bannister (linesman) and Stuart Attwell (referee) who, on Saturday, conspired to make one of the worst mistakes I’ve seen in my near-on 20 years of watching football.

Racist idiots ruining things at Exeter City?

I thought it was stamped out way back in the 80’s, but it seems that for one south coast club, the heavy cloud of racism once again hangs heavy. And this time the villains are the fans of League Two minnows Exeter City – who are now facing the unpleasant situation of having to investigate allegations of racial abuse against two Bournemouth players, Richard Logan and Emmanuel Panther, during Saturday's League Two match between the two sides.

Now before I launch into a massive rant, I’m fully aware that these reports can be hugely overstated. As a former steward of Swansea City I was appalled to read one report of racist chanting, where the complainant had misheard “You Jack Bastard” [a popular chant down the Vetch as it was then] for “You Black Bastard”. Yeah, yeah! It’s a piece of piss to drop a fan in the crowd with a well-placed kick (actually, it wasn’t *too* accurate – the racist shitehouse deserved 12 studs direct to the oh-my-god-it’s-so-ugly-it-surely-can’t-be-human face), but it takes balls of steel to take on a copper. On the pitch.
