The Blues are unbeaten so far this season and are looking to protect that record on Teesside.

Boro won at Wigan last time out to end a miserable run of form which had seen them lose their previous four games.

The visit of Chelsea will hold few fears for Boro, who have an excellent record against the big four, including the Blues.

Middlesbrough have won two of the last three games between the two sides on the banks of the Tees, although since moving to The Riverside it is pretty even between the two having five wins each.

Goals would also seem likely as Chelsea are one of only three sides to have scored in every match this season.

But the Blues are without Didier Drogba, which will be a relief to Middlesbrough as the Ivorian loves playing against the Teessiders. He has scored six times in just seven games against Boro, the most prolific he has been against any club.

Scolari worries

It is not just Drogba who will be missing for Luiz Felipe Scolari, who has a host of injury worries to contend with.

Both John Terry and Ashley Cole were forced to miss England's midweek trip to Belarus and they remain doubts for the match at Boro.

The absence of Cole will not be a huge issue with Scolari as they have Wayne Bridge ready to step in, just as he did for the Three Lions.

Terry is expected to make the trip, With Ricardo Carvalho already sidelined, Alex, who missed their last match with Aston Villa, or Serbian Branislav Ivanovic will start alongside him.

Ivanovic has also been asked to play at full-back in recent weeks and he may again end up there with Jose Bosingwa another doubt after picking up a knock while on international duty with Portugal which ruled him out of their match with Albania.

The injuries also mean that England Under-21 international defender Michael Mancienne and Slovakian starlet Miroslav Stoch have both been placed on stand-by to make their Premier League debuts.

Yet another player reporting back from international duty with an injury was Petr Cech, who has a thigh strain, and could miss his first game of the season. Carlo Cudicini and Hilario are both fit and ready to replace the Czech star should he not make it.

The midfield is also a sparse looking affair for Scolari with Michael Essien and Joe Cole already sidelined.

Despite being an injury doubt, Michael Ballack played for Germany against Wales - but that has now back-fire and he is out for three weeks.

Deco is closing on fitness and could feature alongside Frank Lampard and John Obi Mikel.

With Drogba sidelined Nicolas Anelka will start, as should Florent Malouda, while Argentine youngster Franco Di Santo could make his first league start for the club.

Southgate choices

Boro boss Gareth Southgate is only slightly better off with Robert Huth now confirmed as a definite absentee.

Huth joins suspended captain Emanuel Pogatetz on the sidelines, meaning Chris Riggott will partner David Wheater in defence.

Andrew Taylor could replace Jonathan Grounds at left-back after returning from injury, although Southgate may keep the latter in given his excellent showing against Wigan last time out.

Didier Digard continues to push for his first start and he could be included with Mido a doubt with a groin injury.

With Tuncay Sanli looking likely to remain sidelined until next week, Southgate may opt to push Jeremie Aliadiere up-front to partner Afonso Alves, which would leave room for Digard to come into midfield.
