Merdeka Tournament 2008: Malaysia ready for the semi-final

Wednesday, 22 October 08, 08:52 PM

National coach B. Sathianathan had only three senior players when his side faced Myanmar the last time, but this time around he would have a whole lot of them at his disposal.

"Although I had used many young players before, senior players are still crucial since they have vast experience and international match exposure," Sathianathan told reporters at the FAM House here Wednesday.

During the last edition of the Merdeka tournament, used only three senior players as the squad was mainly made up of under 23 players but since many seniors had proved their worth, they were given an opportunity, he said.

Sathianathan who retained Mohd Shukor Adan and Norhafiz Zamani Misbah from the 2007 squad, roped in Hairuddin Omar, Irwan Fadzli Idrus, Nizaruddin Yusuf and Mohd Hardi Jaafar.

"So far all the players are fit to play against Myanmar in the semifinal tomorrow, except for Mohd Khyril Muhayameen Zambri and Hairuddin as both have fever," he said.

He added that Myanmar are a tough opponent as most of the players are experienced and had played together for five to six years.

"Even without their suspended top striker Yan Paing who received a red card, Myanmar still has a number of good and capable players like Soe Myat Min who did play last year due to injury," he said.

Malaysia beat Myanmar 3-1 in the final last year to lift the trophy and based on the national sides current performance, making the final should not be a tall order.

Probable line up:

Malaysia: Mohd Helmi Eliza Elias, Norhafiz Zamani Misbah, Mohd Zaquan Adha Abd Radzak, Irwan Fadzli Idrus, Mohd Daudso Jamaluddin, Mohd Amirulhadi Zainal, Mohd Shukor Adan, Indra Putra Mahayuddin, Mohd Hardi Jaafar, Mohd Aidil Zafuan Abd Radzak, Mohd Safee Sali.

Myanmar: Aung Oo, Min Thu, Kyaw Khing Win, Moe Win, Khin Maung Lwin, Aung Myo Thant, Zai Htet Aung, Nguyen Duc Thien, Soe Myat Min, Myo Min Tun, Aung Myint Aye.

UCL 08/09: John Terry headed the winner!

Wednesday, 22 October 08, 06:12 PM

It wasn't the beautiful game Felipe Scolari had suggested but it was three points that put Chelsea on the verge of the knockout stages once more.

In a largely stagnant and tactical game against a Roma side more solid than their form this season suggested, it was a second-half header from captain fantastic John Terry that split the sides. An appropriate moment by Chelsea's stand-out player on the night, 24 hours after Scolari declared himself one of his captain's biggest fans.

Prior to kick-off, the manager's hand had been strengthened by further players discharged from the medical department, Cech able to return and Carvalho starting for the first time since the Man United game four weeks ago.

Deco also began the match with one of Saturday's stars, Juliano Belletti, making way. Otherwise it was the team that began at Boro.

Roma's all-time highest goalscorer and captain Franceseco Totti was selected to play as the central striker, the visitors opting for a 4-3-3 rather then their usual 4-2-3-1 and it was a shape that saw them share an early stage of the game that passed with little to stay in the memory.

On eight minutes, Mexes cleared Bridge's scuffed cross poorly and it fell promisingly to Lampard 18 yards out - but to Roma's relief and the crowd's disappointment, his returned shot was within the reach of Doni in goal.

Roma, quite ridiculously, attempted to beat Petr Cech from 45 yards with a free-kick, Brighi's over-ambitious attempt flying well, well wide.

The Chelsea keeper was called into action properly on 20 minutes, sliding to the edge of the area to collect the ball as Vucinic threatened to run through the middle of the Chelsea backline.

Mikel similarly broke a minute later and was felled by the outstretched leg of Mexes, enough for Greek referee Kyros Vassaras to flash the first yellow card.

From 25 yards out, Deco rolled the free-kick to Lampard whose low trajectory shot skimmed the outside of the joint between post and bar.

Kalou let loose an angled drive on 27 minutes but it never looked likely to trouble Doni.
Malouda then became a 29th minute booking for a pull at Taddei's shirt midway inside the opposition half.

Still Chelsea could not maintain anything like sustained pressure on the Shed End goal. Carvalho raised the level of the game with a couple of superbly-timed challenges and Scolari could be seen on the touchline signalling to his players to keep calm; to not rush into mistakes.

On 35 minutes some serious defending was needed. Totti's clever ball opened a shooting chance for Brighi, but Terry's perfectly-timed slide from a yard back knocked the ball away. Brilliant!
Deco backheeled for a Lampard shot on 37 minutes but the contact was not as he would have liked and the ball bounced wide.

With five minutes to go before the break, the Chelsea bench were up and protesting as Deco was felled five yards outside the area but there was no whistle. Anger would have been even greater had Roma's quick break ended with the ball in the Blues' net, but again Terry slid in to quell danger, Taddei the one dispossessed. It had been a disappointing half.

Scolari's response was to bring on Belletti for Malouda for the second period, the Brazilian to play wide right with Kalou moving to the left. The wing combinations had not been slick in the opening period.

Belletti's first two touches were greeted by a roar of 'shoot' from the crowd. His third was indeed a dig from 30 yards, but it cleared the bar with ease.
There looked to be more certainty, more belief in Chelsea's move in the early minutes after the break. Anelka chased a Kalou chip into the area and was not far behind Doni in the race to the ball.

Roma lost their influential Italian international midfielder Aquilani to a hamstring strain on the hour, Perrotta his replacement, and within seconds of the switch, a Lampard free-kick reached Kalou whose header was saved on the line.

On 67 minutes, Mikel connected well to a Belletti pass but Anelka inadvertently deflected it behind. The game had dropped back into the doldrums, a 71st minute Terry booking for catching Totti in the centre circle a rare incident.

Kalou was replaced by Franco Di Santo with 14 minutes remaining on the clock and ran straight into the Roma area for a Lampard corner from the left.

The ball never reached as far as the Argentine's run, instead dropping to Terry at the near post to turn it across Doni and into the net with a stooping header. He briefly stumbled and looked injured, a typically cruel blow for these past two seasons, but after some moments, JT emerged to run back beaming. All was well with the world.
There was a brief bout of wrestling between Terry and Mexes, Roma's dominant defender on the night, as the teams prepared for a Lampard free-kick. The ref attempted to calm it but Lamps decided on his own course of action, bypassing the penalty area action and going straight for goal from 30-plus yards out, Doni stretching to tip over.

Panucci, who had spent the game covering behind Mexes, was booked for a foul and a later mistake by the former Chelsea defender was leapt upon by Lampard who was one challenge away from dribbling through for a second goal.

That would have flattered the performance, if not his own typically-committed contribution.
Bordeaux's win over Cluj by the same scoreline leaves Chelsea three points clear at the top of Group A. Qualification can be assured in Rome in two weeks' time.

Chelsea (4-1-4-1): Cech; Bosingwa, Carvalho, Terry (c), Bridge; Mikel; Kalou (Di Santo 76), Deco, Lampard, Malouda (Belletti h-t); Anelka (Ferreira 90+1).
Scorer Terry 76.
Booked Malouda 29, Terry 71.

Roma (4-3-3): Doni; Cicinho, Mexes, Panucci (c), Riise (Tonetto 71); De Rossi, Aquilani (Perrotta 60) Brighi; Taddei (Menez 80), Totti, Vucinic.
Booked Mexes 23, Panucci 84.

UCL 08/09: Round-Up - 22/10/08

Wednesday, 22 October 08, 05:00 PM

Liverpool and Atletico remain joint leaders of Group D after an enthralling 1-1 draw in Madrid.

Having opened his Reds account in the 3-1 victory against PSV Eindhoven, Keane fired his side in front after 14 minutes with a cool finish from Steven Gerrard's precise pass.

Liverpool remained on top for the rest of the first half but Atletico responded strongly after the break with Argentine star Sergio Aguero coming on for the ineffectual Luis Garcia.

Maniche was denied an equaliser by a poor offside decision, before Jose Reina pushed Simao's low effort against the post.

Atletico kept pushing and drew level in the 83rd minute when Simao tucked a neat shot past Reina after being played in by Diego Forlan.

Bordeaux recorded their first win in the second game in Group A as they overcame CFR Cluj 1-0.

The Romanian side had been level with Chelsea on four points, but they were undone by a Cadu own goal in the 54th minute, and were then reduced to 10 men when Eugen Trica was sent off in the 90th minute.

PSV Eindhoven and Marseille were both desperate to claim three points at Philips Stadion after defeats to Liverpool and Atletico in their opening two matches in Group D, and it was the Dutch team who ran out 2-0 winners.

It was evident that the sides were low on confidence in an uninspiring first half, before Ibrahim Afellay missed an open goal for PSV moments after the restart.

The miss did not prove costly, however, as Danny Koevermans nodded in Stijn Wuytens' corner to give PSV a lead after 72 minutes.

Koevermans then added a second to keep PSV's slim hopes of finishing in the top two alive, while Marseille must now look to win their last three games to climb back into contention.

Barcelona continued their relentless march towards qualification with a thumping win over Basle.

Lionel Messi opened the scoring in stunning fashion after just four minutes as he started, and then rounded off, a flowing move by slotting home Daniel Alves' delightful chip at the back post.

Barca doubled their lead on 15 minutes when Xavi picked out Sergio Busquets for the midfielder to score his first Champions League goal, and Bojan Krkic then made it 3-0 in the 22nd minute with a shot from the edge of the area.

Krkic grabbed his second of the night in the 46th minute after a swift Barcelona counter-attack, and two minutes later Xavi drove in a powerful fifth to pile the misery on Basle.

Sporting Lisbon moved three points clear of Shakhtar Donetsk in the battle for second place after a dramatic 1-0 victory in Ukraine.

Shakhtar enjoyed most of the possession but a clever piece of skill by Derlei in the 76th minute created the opening for Liedson to slide home the winner.

Cypriot minnows Anorthosis Famagusta fell to their first defeat as they lost 1-0 to Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan.

Inter were initially frustrated but broke down their resistance on the stroke of half-time when Adriano headed in Maicon's pinpoint delivery from the right wing.

Anorthosis were not able to battle back to leave Inter in pole position to progress to the second round from Group B.

Werder Bremen played out their third consecutive draw as they were held 2-2 by Panathinaikos.

There was a hint of controversy about Bremen's goal in the 29th minute as Per Mertesacker appeared to control Mesut Ozil's free-kick high on his arm before lashing past Alexandros Tzorvas.

Panathinaikos equalised seven minutes later when Vaggelis Mantzios sent a looping header into the net from Gabriel's cross.

The Greek side then took the lead through Mantzios in the 68th minute, only for Hugo Almeida to equalise with seven minutes remaining.

UCL 08/09: Man U ease past Celtic, Arsenal thumped Fenerbahce

Wednesday, 22 October 08, 12:13 AM

Manchester United ran out comfortable winners of their UEFA Champions League double header with Celtic thanks to a Dimitar Berbatov brace.

The Bulgarian netted poacher's strikes either side of half-time with Wayne Rooney adding the gloss late on to give the holders a 3-0 win.

Both Berbatov's goals looked suspiciously offside but the English champions still fully deserved their win against a Celtic outfit lacking injured strikers Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, Georgios Samaras and Chris Killen.

But any debate was ended with a trademark Rooney strike on 75 minutes to leave United sitting top of Group E with seven points.

The hosts suffered an injury blow ahead of kick-off, Rio Ferdinand hit by a groin strain in the run-up to the game. He was replaced by Jonny Evans with Gary Neville handed the captain's arm band.

The home side were out of the traps quickly, Anderson just failing to get enough on a Nani free-kick.

As United pressed with pace, the Scottish champions defended robustly, and in the 12th minute they had the first real attempt on goal when midfielder Aiden McGeady sent in a left-footed drive from 20 yards which Edwin van der Sar was happy to push around his left post for a corner.

Van der Sar was called into action again when he had to tip over a brilliant Caldwell volley from 25 yards out.

Arsenal were at their attacking best in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night as they recorded an emphatic 5-2 success over Fenerbahce to end the Turkish club's impressive home record.

Fenerbahce headed into the encounter unbeaten at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in 15 games but found themselves two goals down after just 11 minutes, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Theo Walcott converting from Cesc Fabregas through-balls.

Going forward the Gunners were silky but at the back they often looked exposed, and Fener took advantage in the 19th minute when Daniel Guiza's volley across goal caught Mikael Silvestre to find its way past Manuel Almunia.

Arsene Wenger's side continued to throw bodies forward with gusto and extended their advantage through the impressive Abou Diaby before the break and then a close-range strike from Alexandre Song early in the second period.

Guiza reduced arrears 12 minutes from full-time as he latched onto a long pass to toe over Alumina, but, as Aaron Ramsey netted a late fifth, a dramatic comeback was not be as Arsenal ensured they are that step closer to reaching the knockout stages.

UCL 08/09: Round Up - 21/10/08

Tuesday, 21 October 08, 09:30 PM

French champions Lyon came out on top of an eight-goal thriller with Steaua Bucharest to record their first victory in this season's tournament.

Lyon, however, were rattled early on as Steaua netted twice in the opening 11 minutes in Bucharest.

First, Arthuro converted a sublime cross from George Ogararu on eight minutes, and 11 minutes later Dorin Goian added a second as he met a Banel Nicolita corner with a combination of head, neck and back.

Lyon, though, were deservedly back on level terms as Kader Keita converted in stunning style on 23 minutes and highly-rated Karim Benzema equalised shortly after the half-hour mark.

But Steaua were again in front on the stroke of half time as Ovidiu Petre climbed the highest to head in at a corner.

The seesaw encounter continued in style and it was Lyon who enjoyed the better as Fred pounced on 69 minutes and Benzema grabbed his personal second two minutes later.

Fred made sure of the points with a fifth goal in injury time to move Lyon second in Group F.

Juventus have made their worst start to a season in 28 years, leaving manager Ranieri clinging to his job at Stadio delle Alpi, but a vital 2-1 home victory over Real Madrid will silence some doubters.

It was Juve who took an early lead in sensational style as Italian veteran Alessandro Del Piero curled in from 25 yards with Real goalkeeper Iker Casillas an awestruck spectator.

Juventus, who have won the European Cup on two occasions, then doubled their advantage four minutes after half time as Amauri headed in at the back post with the aid of a deflection off Real defender Gabriel Heinze.

Primera Liga champions Real pulled a goal back on 66 minutes as Ruud van Nistelrooy nodded his 61st goal in the Champions League, but Juve clung on for the points to move to the summit of Group H.

Bayern boss Klinsmann has also come in for criticism following a shaky domestic start, but his side continued their impressive European form with a 3-0 win over Fiorentina in Group F.

Germany international Miroslav Klose gave the home side the lead after only four minutes as he latched on to Luca Toni's header to finish with aplomb.

And then on 25 minutes Bastian Schweinsteiger demonstrated equal composure to deftly add a second after sending Fiorentina goalkeeper Sebastien Frey the wrong way.

And in the dying minutes Bayern's Ze Roberto ensured Klinsmann will sleep soundly as he added a spectacular third.

Villarreal remain hot on the heels of United in Group E as they defeated Aalborg 6-3 at El Madrigal thanks to a Joseba Llorente treble.

Marek Saganowski gave Danish side Aalborg a surprise lead after 19 minutes, but Villarreal - suggested by some as potential dark horses in this season's competition - soon slipped into gear.

Former United forward Giuseppe Rossi (28) equalised and five minutes later Spanish full-back Joan Capdevila unleashed an unstoppable, half-volleyed, drive to hand Manuel Pellegrini's side the lead.

But the Yellow Submarine's advantage lasted just three minutes as Aalborg, managed by ex-Arsenal chief Bruce Rioch, restored parity through a dinked Thomas Envoldsen finish.

After the break Villarreal again turned on the style as Llorente (67) followed up a Marcos Senna drive and the forward then grabbed his side's fourth shortly after.

Andreas Johansson pulled a goal back for Aalborg with 13 minutes remaining, but French veteran Robert Pires showed all of his experience two minutes later to restore Villarreal's three-goal advantage and Llorente wrapped up his hat-trick in the dying stages.

Porto were defeated 1-0 by Dynamo Kiev in Tuesday night's only quiet contest to end Jesualdo Ferreira's side's phenomenal record of one defeat in their last 21 games at Estadio do Drago ahead of kick-off.

The visitors struck after 27 minutes as Olexandr Aliyev placed a free-kick beyond the reach of Porto goalkeeper Nuno to secure the points in Group G.

Zenit St Petersburg and BATE Borisov both look unlikely to qualify from Group H after playing out a 1-1 draw in the early kick-off.

An enthralling opening 45 minutes at Petrovsky Stadium saw the woodwork rattled on three separate occasions as Zenit efforts from Fatih Tekke and Danny sandwiched Igor Stasevich's stab for BATE.

Seven minutes after the interval, the opening goal arrived as - against the run of play - Belarusian outfit BATE stunned their hosts with a textbook counter-attacking punch when half-time substitute Pavel Nekhaychik slotted in from close range.

Tekke deservedly rescued a point for Zenit - who remain without a win in this year's competition - with nine minutes remaining as he broke the BATE offside trap to volley an equaliser, but the draw leaves both sides facing a battle to progress.

Super Soccer Star: Chelsea will search Malaysia young talent!

Monday, 20 October 08, 07:55 PM

Chelsea has agreed to be the exclusive football club partner of a grass roots talent search in Malaysia.

The Super Soccer Star television show will be broadcast by RTM, the country's leading free-to-air broadcaster, in December.

The news follows Chelsea's highly successful pre-season friendly in Kuala Lumpur that attracted a 60,000 plus crowd.

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon said: 'We are delighted to be involved again in this innovative project that helps us deliver on our continuing commitment to promote grass roots football among youngsters in Asia.

'The show complements our involvement in Vision Asia with the AFC as well as showcasing Chelsea to a large audience and we look forward to hosting the finalists of Super Soccer Star in England once again.'

Super Soccer Star is co-produced by British company Galleon plc and provides a mix of football and entertainment as well as interactive content for viewers.

The show aims to promote football skills and fitness across the 14-16 age group and will appeal to family peak-time viewing.

The tests by which participants are judged are based on those used at the Chelsea Academy. The club's name and brand will be promoted on air and in conjunction with the naming of the show. The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) are also a partner.

The four finalists are destined to visit Chelsea's world renowned Academy and Stamford Bridge later this year.

The show extends Chelsea's relationship with Malaysia. As well as the friendly in July against a Malaysian Select XI, the FAM's President His Royal Highness Sultan Ahmad Shah visited Cobham earlier this year where two young Malaysian players had been invited to train at the Academy.

Super Soccer Star is going to be HIT!

Super Soccer Star is co-produced by Galleon and its local production partner, Nafalia Corporation Sdn Bhd. It will air on RTM2 at 9.00pm every Thursday, from December 18. The season will run for 13 one hour episodes till March 2009.

Chelsea FC is Super Soccer Star's official football partner worldwide. In Malaysia, the reality TV series is supported by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and the Malaysian Ministry of Youth & Sports (KBS).

"Galleon is very excited to be working with Chelsea FC and RTM with the support of FAM and KBS to roll out the Super Soccer Star Malaysia reality TV series to a new country in Asia.

"The series was a phenomenal success as a national show and talent hunting platform when it premiered in China last year. We expect the same success when Super Soccer Star hits the screens in Malaysia too," Ramachandra said.

The partnership between Chelsea and other local partners was confirmed by Peter Kenyon, Chief Executive of Chelsea FC, who was in Malaysia this year in conjunction with Chelsea FC's 2008 Asian Tour.

"Super Soccer Star will be the most talked about football reality show in the coming months and a fantastic opportunity to expose our young football talents," enthused Mohd Najib Hj Jaafar, Executive Producer from Nafalia Corporation Sdn Bhd.

"The show's objectives are not just to find the best teen footballer, but also the kid with the most star quality. The focus of this reality TV show is on fun and entertainment with a strong celebrity component," added Ramachandra.

Serie A: Inter thrash Roma, Ronaldinho keep AC milan in the pace

Sunday, 19 October 08, 09:31 PM

A very entertaining game at the Stadio Olimpico saw Inter establish an early lead over hosts Roma after top quality finishing from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, ended with the ball in the back of the net.

The Swedish striker was on hand again at the start of the second half to slot past Alexander Doni in the Roma goal. Just before the hour mark two quick goals from Dejan Stankovic and Obinna stretched Inter’s lead to 4-0. End-to end attacking play made this match a wonderful spectacle for the neutral, and a great advert for Italian football.

The match kicked off in typically fast paced fashion, with the Olimpico crowd willing their team forward towards Inter’s goal. Inter were quickest out of the blocks, scoring a fourth minute goal that stunned the Olimpico crowd into silence. In incredible circumstances Inter went ahead when Ibrahimovic broke away from his marker, to lob the ball over the out-rushing Doni in the Roma box.

Inter got the second half underway, with no substitutions being made by either coach. Roma concentration was again found wanting as the big Swede, Ibrahimovic broke through the Giallorosso defence to slot past Doni in a one-on-one with the Brazilian keeper, making it two goals to nil for the visitors.

Tactically speaking, this game was a feast of attacking football, with both teams pushing forward and looking for the win. In the 54th minute Roman hearts were broken once more when a half volley from Stankovic flew into the goal from outside the area. The score board was morbid reading for the home fans, and it would only get worse after Obinna got in on the act with another fantastic strike from range leaving Doni with little to do in the Roma goal.

Roma (4-2-3-1)
: Doni, Cicinho, Juan, Loria, Riise, De Rossi, Totti (Menez 69’), Taddei (Okaka 75’), Aquilani, Perrotta, Vucinic.

Inter (4-4-2): Julio Cesar, Maicon, Cordoba, Chivu, Muntari, Zanetti, Cambiasso, Stankovic (Dacourt 77’), Quaresma (Mancini 68’), Obinna, Ibrahimovic (Cruz 81’).

Ronaldinho scored twice, and Pippo Inzaghi once, as an impressive Milan side swept past sorry Sampdoria 3-0 at San Siro.

On 53 minutes the home side were given the perfect chance to break the deadlock as Lucchini was, somewhat harshly, penalised for handling a Jankulovski cross in the area. Lucchini, and his coach Walter Mazzarri, were furious, but this didn't perturb Ronaldinho who buried his penalty past Castellazzi. Lucchini was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

The former Barcelona man was really in his stride now, and on 65 minutes he scored his and Milan's second of the afternoon, combining with Kaka before bursting into the area and sliding the ball into the bottom corner.

In the final minute of play, Milan did indeed get a third, and it was substitute Pippo Inzaghi who grabbed the goal. A brilliant team move involving Ronaldinho, Kaka and Ambrosini ended with Inzaghi rounding Castellazzi and slotting home.

Milan:
Abbiati; Antonini, Bonera, Maldini, Jankulovski, Flamini, Seedorf (Emerson 73), Ambrosini, Ronaldinho, Pato (Kaka 46), Borriello (Inzaghi 78)

Sampdoria: Castellazzi; Lucchini, Gastaldello, Bottinelli, Pieri, Padalino (Stankevicius 60), Sammarco, Franceschini, Ziegler (Bellucci 71); Cassano (Bonazzoli 81), Delvecchio

La Liga 08/09: Barca continue winning, Valencia stay at top

Sunday, 19 October 08, 09:09 PM

A stunner from Samuel Eto'o - ably assisted by Thierry Henry - was the difference between the two sides at San Mames in what was a physical and exciting contest.

After the break things were more to the neutral observer's liking as the game started to open up. Three minutes after the restart some fine work down the right eventually saw Iniesta cut the ball back for the onrushing Sánchez, but the youngster blasted his unmarked effort way, way over the ba.

Iniesta, in fact, had taken control of the game by this time, even allowing for Athletic's counters, but it was Henry who set up Eto'o for the opener.

The Frenchman's little through ball found Eto'o on the edge of the box, and so well timed was it that the striker was able to tip the ball past the flailing Amorebieta and go through on goal. The best was still to come, though, as Eto'os thunderous finish with his left foot left Iraizoz utterly helpless.

The hapless Amorebieta almost put through his own net minutes later with a header, but Iraizoz's diving save kept the score at 0-1 as the closing stage of the match began.

A domineering performance from Valencia saw Numancia sent home empty-handed once again as Los Che regain their spot atop the Liga table.

Villa is just unstoppable at the moment. It took him just four minutes to send the Mestalla into raptures, albeit in rather bizarre fashion. The Spanish hitman blasted a shot at goal which rebounded from defender onto the face of Morientes. The ball then dribbled through into Villa’s path who accepted the gift graciously by slotting past the onrushing Pablo and into the net.

On seventy minutes they got exactly that. Villa slipped through a pass, and in almost comical fashion Mario and Juanra managed to tackle each other, with the ball landing at the feet of Mata who slid the ball past Pablo to seal the 3 points.

Mata, who was excellent all afternoon, wasn’t finished yet however, and on 82 minutes he chipped a beautiful pass into the path of substitute Vicente, who controlled well before blasting high in to the roof of the net to make Valencia’s victory all the more emphatic. They look a formidable force, and the understanding between the likes of Mata and Villa seems to be getting better by the week.

This is a side that looks capable of scoring every time they move forward, and with Villa in the side, they usually do. A wonderful outside of the foot pass by Fernandes sent Villa through and he volleyed past a desolate Pablo to make it number four, and send miserable Numancia away with another defeat.
