A Step Too Far! - Its A Total Disgrace!!

Friday, 21 August 09, 08:13 AM · Comments (11)

Excuse me for not exchanging pleasantries, but yesterday I was skimming the net in search for today's blog entry, when I came across the following article:

MANCHESTER UTD football club have branded the decision by one of their supporters to have a shirt printed with a Hillsborough slur on the back a “disgrace”.

The ECHO revealed yesterday that MUFC fan Colm Jackson had a Hillsborough slur printed on the back of his shirt.

Today Head of communications for MUFC Philip Townsend said: “We have checked our systems and Colm Jackson is not a season ticket holder.

“If he had been we would have revoked his season ticket.

So what is it exactly that Colm Jackson got printed on his shirt? Well after searching the net, I can confirm that he had "YSB - 96 - Not Enough" printed on his jersey. YSB, of course, stands for "You Scouse Bastards".

I'm lost for words. First of all, if I knew the guy I would probably punch him in the face 97 times. - Once for each victim, and of course, once for myself. I mean what on earth was he thinking? How could he possibly think that any other Manchester United fan would see it and say "Ha, that's boss!". And secondly, Hillsborough was a disaster that didn't only affect Liverpool fans. It affected all the friends and families of the victims, be it United fans, Evertonians or any other supported club.

It's worth taking a look at the apology that the Sports Direct made in regards to this issue:

Sports Direct today apologised after selling a Manchester United shirt containing a vile Hillsborough slur.

The chain, which has five shops on Merseyside, also immediately changed its shirt policy following outrage from Reds fans.

The move came after Manchester United supporter Colm Jackson bragged on social networking site Facebook about buying the shirt at Sports Direct’s Arndale Centre store in Manchester.

Sports Direct today said the "spiteful and abusive" wording, which referred to the 96 Liverpool fans who died at the disaster, was "unknowingly" applied by an assistant who did not appreciate its significance.

Wow. It just show's how little people actually know. Its pure ignorance, people outside of Liverpool just dont care enough to educate themselves on the matter. Personally it all makes me sick. I'm an avid Liverpool fan, so it's my business to make sure those around me know exactly what happened at Hillsborough.

Has football become a game of sheer hate? I do hope not, but it's obvious that fan's are starting to dislike people they do not know, simply because of the club they support. There is no room in the game for this type of behaviour. I'm appauled, not only as a Liveprool fan, but as a Human being!

I will be back at some point over the weekend.

Till then. Walk on, with hope in your heart.

Well said mate. I work in a football store in London, and we're specifically told to be careful about what we print.

But then again, what do you expect when this particular company is run by a man who runs a football club who knows jack all about the sport!

If somebody came up to me in a shop and asked me to print that, I'm afraid to say I would lose my job.

You would probably see me on the 6'o'clock news.

Ahh, I can see it now...

"Breaking news: A man who works in Sports Direct has been fired and taken into custody for viciously attacking a customer who wanted the words 'YSB - 96 - Not Enough' printed on his shirt. It is said that Colm Jackson was severely beaten with a Liverpool mug and suffered heavy trauma..."

It is a disgrace but I am sure its just a small minority of fans that resort to such cheap tricks. Every club has such fans.

I am a Man United fan and I am ashamed of what this person has done. As far as I am concerned he isn't a Man United fan, we have had our own disaster (Munich) and no proper fan would do that.

I did do a post about it on my blog yesterday (LINK) and there are one or two comments but I have also had United fans emailing me saying that he is a disgrace.

It is a small minority but no matter what team you support you shouldn't take the mick out of something so tragic.

I apologise on behalf of proper Manchester United fans.

I know the majority of united supporters have more tact than this idiot. I'm sure there are liverpool supporters out there who abominate just as much concerning the Munich tragedy.

Thanks for being classy manuniteddevils. We should all love eachother as human beings and understand that football is a lower allegiance in comparison to the compassion we should display as people.

Why is this a story? The Mancs have been chanting the same message for years, this lad just went and had it put on a t shirt. There are a good number of muppets in Manchester. Not to say that the Scouse have always been the shining beacon of sportsmanship. Only a short while ago, Liverpool supporters were chanting "2-0 to the Murderers" at Everton. Come on, this is nothing but words. Have we forgotten the 70's and 80's in England, the rioting, the taking over of complete cities by travelling supporters. That was something to get wound up about. This is nothing but printed words on a tshirt, they could never hurt, criple or kill. Seems to me that taking this attitude of complete offense and indignation is just looking for a dust up and that is something that we should be looking to avoid. YNWA

Ryan-

I think the reason people have to get wound up or take it seriously, even though it is as you say, is so that it is clear an escalation will not be tolerated and it won't return to something resembling the 70s and 80s. If we just saw that shirt and said whatever and ignored it, I think it might raise the tolerance level for such ignorant things. But you are right that we shouldn't overreact. I think people just want to be careful to make sure the animosity doesn't become so vitriolic that it will lead to more violence.
