Spotlight On: Liverpool vs Manchester Utd, Sunday 25th October

Saturday, 24 October 09, 07:28 AM · Comments (9)

Four games to shape their season, they are saying. Make or break, win or bust, all or nothing. The first of these crucial clashes just so happens to be one of the fiercest fixtures in football. Liverpool entertain Manchester Utd at Anfield this Sunday and we've got all the build-up, right here.

Two teams steeped in history, locked level on 18 league titles making them the two most successful football clubs in British football history. Could this be the season when Sir Alex Ferguson finally knocks Liverpool "off their f*****g perch". Or will Rafa Benitez be able to turn things around and end our two decade wait for number 19.

This fixture has all the passion and romance of a Hugh Grant film, but without the bumbling niceties.
Blood and thundered are guaranteed as both teams battle it out in the biggest game of their season so far. A win here for Liverpool would quash any talks of a crisis at the club. Should we lose, though, the season could be over before it ever really started.

History

Sharing the accolade of being the two most successful clubs in British football history paints an image of the two teams having dominated the game for many years. The reality, though, is very different.

Champions again: Manchester Utd have dominated the league for the past three years

Liverpool have been sitting pretty on 18 league titles for twenty years now. The last triumph came in 1989-1990, before the Premier league had even been formed. Since then the title has been largely shared between Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester Utd, the latter having recently drawn level with our long standing record.

Many feel this could finally be the year that the Red Devils overtake us as the country's most decorated club, as they chase an unprecedented fourth straight Premier League title.

Last Season
This fixture proved to be a very enjoyable one indeed for us last season. We ran out 2-1 winners at Anfield with neither Steven Gerrard or Fernando Torres in the starting line-up. A Wes Brown own goal and a Ryan Babel winner cancelled out Carlos Tevez's opener to give the home team a much deserved victory.

Thumped: Liverpool completed a league double over their rivals last season

Liverpool completed the double over Utd last season after thumping them 4-1 at Old Trafford. The goals came from Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard, Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena after a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty had given Utd the lead. Rafa Benitez's men will be hoping they can emulate their success in this fixture last season and breathe new life into a faltering title challenge.

Current Standings

Manchester Utd are currently sitting pretty at the top of the Barclays Premier League table with 22 points from 9 games. Liverpool, though, find themselves in an unfamiliar mid table position. We currently lie in 8th position with 15 points from 9 games.

The relevance of the points for either team on Sunday could hardly be greater. Should Utd take all 3 points at Anfield, they will extend the gap between the two teams to ten points, a daunting deficit at this stage in the season. Although they would probably be satisfied with a draw, the away team will fancy their chances here.

For us, this game is huge. 3 points this weekend would cut the gap between to a much more manageable 4 points. Not only would this go some way to reigniting our fading title challenge, but it would also inject some much needed confidence into the team ahead of a season shaping run in of games.

Team News

The recent international break did us no favours at all. Key duo Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres were both sent home injured after appearing in arguably meaningless games for their respective countries. The former is highly unlikely to feature on Sunday with a groin problem, while Benitez is hopeful that the latter will be able to make an appearance.

We managed without the deadly duo at Old Trafford last season but this term we have looked distinctly average in their absence. Right back Glen Johnson will also be given a late fitness test to determine if he can take part while Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Andrea Dossena and Alberto Aquilani are all ruled out.

Crocked: Liverpool's Steven Gerrard has aggravated a groin injury.

Manchester Utd also have some complications of their own.

Striker Wayne Rooney is a doubt with a calf injury, so Dimitar Berbatov will have to provide the attacking threat up top. The Red Devils are set to welcome back Ryan Giggs and Patrice Evra from thigh and heel injuries respectively while Darren Fletcher and Ji-Sung Park are set to miss out. Owen Hargreaves is facing a few more weeks on the sidelines after a long-term knee injury.

So while both squads have problems with injuries, Manchester Utd are certainly better equipped to deal with them. On paper, at least, they will most likely be the stronger side.

Possible Line-ups

Far be it from me to second guess a Rafa Benitez line-up, but here's what the Liverpool starting XI could look like:

------------------------------Reina------------------------
Johnson-------Carragher----Agger--------Aurelio

Kuyt-----------Lucas--------Mascherano-----Babel

------------------------Benayoun-------------------------

-----------------------------Torres-------------------------

Manchester Utd are likely to field an attack minded team, having been out gunned in this fixture last term.

-----------------------Van Der Sar----------------------
Neville-----------Vidic-------Ferdinand------Evra

Valencia--------Scholes----Carrick---------Nani

---------------------------Giggs
--------------------------
--------------------------Berbatov-----------------------

Both teams are very much subject to change, but these starting XI's are as close as we can get without knowing the full extent of specific player's injuries.

Tactics

Liverpool are likely to stick with a tried and tested 4-5-1 formation. We will look to Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel to provide service to Fernando Torres from wide areas, with Yossi Benayoun charged with the task of being the inspirational spark between the lines. Javier Mascherano will be deployed as a shield in front of the back four and will look to break up any attacking threat from Manchester Utd before it gets a chance to develop.

The away team are likely to adopt a similar formation.

Luis Antonio Valencia and Nani, who both impressed in midweek, will give Liverpool's attack-minded fullbacks a lot of food for thought. Ryan Giggs will look to add some energy to the attack in and around Dimitar Berbatov's position.

This game will be a battle won in midfield and whoever prevails there is likely to come away with the points.

Liverpool key men

We will all be hoping Javier Mascherano can rediscover the form that saw him Captain Argentina to World Cup qualification. The energetic midfielder will be charged with the task of protecting a vulnerable defence. If we are going to get anything out of this game we are surely going to have to nullify the threat of Utd's strong attacking contingent.

Key man: Javier Mascherano will have to be at his best

Another red man with the weight of this fixture on his shoulders will be Fernando Torres.

If fit, the Spaniard will very much be the spearhead of an attack that looks otherwise impotent. We will be relying heavily on our star striker to fire us to glory in front of the home crowd.

Manchester Utd key men

Dubbed "Ronaldo-lite" by some football fans, Luis Antonio Valencia was always going to suffer by comparison to the departed Cristiano Ronaldo. However, he is beginning to live up to his £16m price tag and with two goals in two games to add to his impressive crossing and trickery, Valencia looks set to be a perpetual thorn in Liverpool's side.

Impressive: Luis Antonio Valence has hit good form of late

Another player Utd will look to for inspiration in this fixture will be Edwin Van Der Sar.

The veteran keeper has only recently returned to the squad following a lengthy spell on the sidelines. His calming influence and sound judgement have been missed in his absence, and his presence at the back will help those around him to keep their composure.

Head to head
With two teams that boast some of the finest players in the league, there is set to be some exciting head-to-head battles. Firstly and perhaps most obviously, Fernando Torres vs Nemanja Vidic.

Torr de Force: Fernando Torres gave Nemanja Vidic a torrid time last time around

Fernando Torres has the ability to make even the most established defenders look foolish at times. He had the beating of Vidic last time the two teams met, scoring once as we romped to a 4-1 victory. Vidic was sent off in this fixture home and away last season, so must look to keep his temperament in check if his team are to avoid a repeat of last seasons embarrassment.

A key battle elsewhere on the pitch will be Luis Antonio Valencia vs Fabio Aurelio.

Valencia possesses the pace and trickery to bypass people as if they aren't even there. He might switch sides during the game, but I expect him to get at Fabio Aurelio right from the off. His quality of delivery will be problematic for our defence so Aurelio will have to look to cut off the threat at the supply.

The view from Anfield

Liverpool fans will be forgiven for approaching this fixture with caution. Coming off the back of four straight defeats, confidence at Anfield has hit a new low. We are likely to be without our inspirational skipper and coming up against the league leaders at a time like this could turn to be either a blessing in disguise, or a complete disaster. While a win would put to bed any talks of a crisis and inject belief into the squad, a loss would surely flatten an already deflated group of players.

Rafa Benitez had this to say about Sunday's fixture:

"Beating United last season is something positive we can use. Without Gerrard and Torres, the team was really good and the fans enjoyed the day - especially because we were without two very important players.

"So, if we have to do the same in this situation now, we can do it."

Benitez, then, is remaining optimistic about his teams chances.

The view from Old Trafford

Manchester Utd will go into this game brimming with confidence after a late win against CSKA Moscow in midweek. This victory follows impressive domestic form for the Red Devils, who have won four of their last five, drawing once.

The away fans are set to add extra spice to the occasion, having snapped up all the remaining beach balls from the Liverpool club store. Hopefully the game wont be spoilt with stoppages, and the inflatables can stay amongst the crowd.

Sir Alex Ferguson had this to say:

“We go into the game in decent form, and there is a confidence to our play. But it’s a derby game and anything can happen. Going to Anfield at any time is hard, for both teams. It won’t be any different on Sunday.”

Ferguson is clearly not resting on his laurels then.

Result
This game is usually as much about bragging rights as it is points. However, for us, the 3 points at stake on Sunday have taken on a new significance given our current league standing.

The home fans will raise the roof as they look to will their team on, and this could just prove crucial. I expect a high-tempo game
with chances and goals for either team. A cautiously optimistic nod in the direction of the red men from me. 2-1, and a more reserved whisper of a 2all draw from Dom.

There is, of course, one more thing to mention. The return to Anfield of Michael Owen.

There, I mentioned it. Now let's focus on the game, shall we.

When MO comes on the pitch the crown should turn their backs on him...

I think if we manage a point from this game, then I will be happy.

If the draw was offered now, I wouldn't take it. We need to go for all 3 points. It's bravery that will will us the title, not caution.

Well... We all know Rafa likes to play it safe. If we play cautious, I think we are looking at a draw, however... If Rafa goes at the throats of United, then we shall prosper.

United dont play well when they arent in control, especially if the opposition keep attacking them. So I hope we will do the same thing.

We have more to prove, and are coming off the back of a poor string of results.

LFC FTW!

Woo Hoo!!!!

What are the papers going to say????

Thankfully the 6+ minutes extra time went in our favour, and made N'gog a Kop hero. I was watching that clock wondering how and why so much extra time!

Hats off to Fergie being as humble as he could during post match interview.

Hope we can now build on this, and move forward. Some reason I think this is a mere blip as it was a big game, the fans now need to build on this and cheer the team on, and the players need to show the same drive and commitment as shown today.

YNWA!
