The Kop End Debate: Your Most Respected Football Player.

Monday, 02 November 09, 04:44 AM · Comments (6)

There are two types of players in this world. Those who deserve to be hated, and those who's actions command respect. But to think there is such a big gap between the two types of players is actually pretty disturbing. On one hand you have Dirk Kuyt, who funds and runs his own charity - The Dirk Kuyt Foundation. On the other hand you have players like Marlon King Boxing Champion, who could't be less deserving of their contracts...

But taking into account players aren't perfect, I want to take a look at a players actions on the field. This is what truly makes a player respectable. It is no lie that many players are far more deserving of their hatred, like the the Diving Drogba's, the Raging Rooney's, the down right Dirty Diouf's and all the badge kissing players that leave for more money.

So, I put it to you: | Who is your most respected player in football today and why?

My Answer:

Without a doubt, my answer has to be Mr Lucas Leiva.

18 months the player has been barraged by the fans. He has been tormented by constant boo's and countless attacks from the critics saying he just isn't good enough. But not once has the young Brazilian complained or asked for a transfer. Not once has he moaned about what was said about him. No, instead he takes to the field every week, and puts his heart and soul into playing for the team.

It's not often a player has an great game and is praised one week, then as soon as he makes a single mistake in the next game, is verbally attacked by the masses. Time and time again this has happened to the player, but time and time again he has dug in his nails and sunk in his teeth to bounce back from such attacks, and his reward? A starting place in the team which has seen him become one of our better players this season.

It is amazing to me that Lucas still chooses to play for Liverpool, and personally I commend his loyalty. He is without a doubt, my most respected footballer in the sport today.

Till tomorrow. Walk on, with hope in your heart.

Well I'd marry him. I'd have to pick Lucas too. I think Liverpool are blessed with these kinds of players. And maybe we have Rafa to thank for doing the blessing by bringing them in.

I think Kuyt applies here as well. Though I don't think he ever got the boos, he's been questioned about his talent and his goal scoring, but never his work rate or his heart. He is truly a team player, not caring where he plays as long as he is playing and helping the club. I do think he is a much more talented footballer than he is given credit for as well.

Another one of these players is Carra. His head was being called for this season, saying he had lost yards of pace, was past his best, and what does he do? He comes out and says he has to do better. No excuses. We could all see he was trying his best the whole time. But he kept trying and turned out some incredible performances, none better than his captaincy against United. Let's not say anything about last week. BUT HE'S DONE THIS FOR YEARS.

Lastly, I've got to say that I really respect Michael Essien. He's another one of these players who puts it all out there.

Lucas did say on numerous occasions that he couldn't take much more of the abuse and that if it didn't stop, he'd have no alternative but to think about looking for another club. This was when Lucas was really getting it (like Voronin is now), when he could do no good at all.

However, all he has to do is get his head out of the papers, get his head down and listen to what Benitez tells him. If it weren't for the media and agents most players would probably be happy to keep going for clubs they love. It's when little niggling lies start to creep under your skin that it really starts to cause a problem.

I think Lucas will be a bit of a Danny Murphy type figure for us, then go on and really make an undroppable star of himself at somewhere else where he can flourish. I don't think Liverpool has the kind of system to allow it. However, get him the middle at Spurs, with Krancjar and Modric... Magic.
